The Jeonju International Film Festival, South Korea’s second most important generalist film festival, on Tuesday announced “The Major Tones” and “Time to Be Strong” as the Grand Prix winners of its two competition sections. The festival continues until Friday.

Directed by Argentina’s Ingrid Pokropek, “The Major Tones” is a mystery film about a youngster with a metal plate in her arm which begins to receive peculiar messages in Morse Code. It premiered at the Mar del Plata festival and also played in Berlin’s Generation KPlus section. In Jeonju it won the international section.

The Korean section was dominated by “Time to Be Strong,” the sophomore effort of director Namkoong Sun. In addition to the Korean competition’s Grand Prix, it also shared the best actor award and picked up the Watch award from a local streamer.

Lionsgate Television is teaming with Park Chan-wook to develop an English-language TV adaptation of Park’s iconic film “Oldboy.”

Park directed and co-wrote the original film, which was itself loosely based on the Japanese manga of the same name. He will produce the new series version along with his producing partner, Syd Lim. Executives Courtney Mock and Tara Joshi are overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television. Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.

“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing ‘Oldboy’ into the world of television,” said Park. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original and risk-taking storytelling.”

Originally released in 2003, “Oldboy” tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and held prisoner in a sealed hotel room for 15 years. He is suddenly released with no explanation, only to learn he has five days to discover why he was imprisoned or face the consequences.

One genre that the filmmakers there have always been rather proficient at is the romantic melodrama and works like “Christmas in August” reiterated the same at the start of the New Wave. However, in 2000 came “Ditto”, a “science-fiction” romance that was unlike something the South Korea had produced before, a feature that went on to be a big hit with the audience. The story, a high-concept romance which connects two people in different eras through a ham radio, resonated with and is much loved by audiences and storytellers alike, so much so that 22 years later, we get a modern day namesake retelling from “Go Back” director Seo Eun-young.

Oldboy is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD set on December 12 via Neon and Decal Releasing. The 2003 South Korean revenge thriller has been restored in 4K from the original camera negative with Dolby Vision.

One of the greatest and most jaw-droppingly shocking movies of all time, Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy turns 20 years old here in 2023, and a fresh new restoration is on the way.

From what we gather, Neon will be bringing this new restoration of the original Oldboy to theaters this year, and we expect to learn much more with the trailer debut tomorrow.

Variety had noted in a report back in August 2022, “It will mark the first time Park’s film plays on the big screen since its initial release on November 21, 2003.”

The acclaimed film stars Choi Min-sik as Oh Dae-Su, a man who was kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. After he’s released, he has five days to find his captor.

Yoo Ji-tae and Kang Hye-jung also star in Oldboy, which was remade in 2013.

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is a South Korean remake of the Spanish hit, La Casa de Papel, starring Park Hae-soo (Squid Game).

The series is directed by Kim Hong-sun (Luca).

Plot

The story takes off in an era when North and South Korea are reunited. A professor gathers a group of talented thieves from both regions to carry out a heist of the recently minted coin.

About the Series

In the recently added episodes we are offered more action than in its predecessor, and a more elaborate production. However, it does not impress in its premise that is quite similar, perhaps, too much.

Ideal for thriller and action fans. This Netflix series is now in its second season.

Neon has acquired the North American and British distribution rights to the horror drama Handling the Undead, starring Oscar-nominated Renate Reinsve.

Reinsve earned the best actress crown at Cannes for her star turn in The Worst Person in the World. She is joined in Handling The Undead by fellow Worst Person in the World actor Anders Danielsen Lie in the feature debut for director Thea Hvistendahl.

The film about three families facing loss and grief is currently in production and is produced by Kristin Emblem & Guri Neby under their Einar Film banner and also stars Bjørn Sundquist, Bente Børsum and Bahars Pars.

Hvistendahl earlier directed the documentary AdjøMontebello and several short films, including Virgins4lyfe, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Award at SXSW.

Neon has acquired North American and UK rights to the horror-drama Handling the Undead, marking the narrative feature debut of Thea Hvistendahl, who previously directed the documentary Adjø Montebello and several short films, including the SXSW Grand Jury Award-nominated Virgins4lyfe. The project reteams the distributor with Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, who starred in its Oscar-nominated romantic drama The Worst Person in the World, directed by Joachim Trier.

Handling the Undead picks up on an abnormally hot summer day in Oslo, as a strange electric field surrounds the city, with a collective migraine spreading across town. TVs, lightbulbs and electronics go haywire, the chaos reaching a debilitating crescendo when suddenly, it’s over.

The film currently in production is based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the renowned writer of bestselling horror novels and the screenplays Border and Let the Right One In, who co-wrote the script with Hvistendahl.

The movie follows Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik), who after being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, is released, only to find that he must find his captor in five days. The 2004 Grand Prix winning Cannes Film Festival title is the second installment of Park’s The Vengeance Trilogy, following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and preceded by Lady Vengeance (2005).

Chan-wook also wrote the screenplay alongside Hwang Jo-yun and Lim Joon-hyung. The pic also starred Yoo Ji-tae, and Kang Hye-jung. The pic was a huge hit in South Korea with Box Office Mojo reporting a global gross of 15M. Since Oldboy‘s release in 2003, the film has been restored and remastered in 4K Hdr supervised by Park. The pic spawned a 2013 English-language remake from Spike Lee.

Neon has yet to disclose any specific release plans for “Oldboy,” but the film has been restored and remastered in 4K Hdr as supervised by Chan-wook.

Half a year ago, one of Netflix’s largest international series — Spain’s “La Casa De Papel” — wrapped its fifth and final season in a blaze of agonizing glory. Now, fans who are missing out on thrills, red jumpsuits and masks galore can rejoice in the streamer’s Korean remake, “Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area,” which debuted a main teaser unraveling a bit of the fan-favorite robbers’ motives.

The trailer traces the origins of the Joint Economic Area, a fictionalized mint located where present-day North and South Korea are divided. While the aim of reunification is to benefit all citizens and establish a common currency, “in reality, only the rich got richer,” the trailer’s narrator says.

“Welcome to capitalism,” Tokyo (Jeon Jong-seo) grimly adds.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for “Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area,” a remake of its hit Spanish crime drama. The streamer also announced that the show will premiere on June 24.
