Exclusive: TriCoast Worldwide has locked down international sales rights to the coming-of-age film Dear Zoe, starring Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink, with plans to screen the pic for potential buyers and festival reps at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The indie from director Gren Wells (The Road Within) is based on Philip Beard’s novel of the same name, which was selected by Booklist, a magazine of the American Library Association, as one of the ten best debut novels of 2005. It centers on Tess (Sink), who suffers an unimaginable loss alongside her family, and finds support from two surprising sources: her biological father (Theo Rossi)—a lovable slacker from the wrong side of the tracks—and the charming but dangerous juvenile delinquent next door (newcomer Kweku Collins).

Marc Lhormer and Melissa Martin adapted the screenplay for the film, which also stars Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy), Justin Bartha (Godfather of Harlem) and Vivien Lyra Blair...

Rock Salt Releasing has picked up global sales rights and U.S. distribution for Ayar Blasco’s sophomore adult animation feature “Lava,” with sales kicking off at this year’s digital American Film Market (AFM).

Rock Salt also announced that the English dub of the Spanish-language film, a hit in this year’s Contrechamp section at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, will feature two-time Primetime Emmy-nominated actress and comedian Janeane Garofalo in the lead role.

The near-future sci-fi satire accompanies Débora (Garofalo), a lonely and ineffectual tattoo artist, and her friends through the likely end of the world. One evening, several friends come over to watch the latest episode of “Gain of Clones” when suddenly the signal cuts out. Everyone in the room loses two minutes of time as they are entranced by a subliminal message broadcast over the screen.

Rock Salt Releasing has picked up the animated satirical film, Dollhouse: The Eradication of Female Subjectivity from American Popular Culture, and will launch international sales at the 2020 online Cannes Film Festival, as well as release the film in the U.S. in August.

From writer-director-producer Nicole Brending, the pic is in the bubble gum pop world of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan and told by entertainment reporters. Junie Spoon’s pop star story runs the gamut: from losing her virginity in a sex tape, to 24-hour marriages to a Patty-Hearst style kidnapping and bank heist, to the murder of her mother. The stylized puppets reveal the hypocrisies of an opportunistic society that preys on the talents and contributions of women.

The film stars Aneikit Bonnel (Grosse Pointe Blank), Erik Hoover (The Stranger), Peter Ooley (The Life of Riley), Adam Sly, and Sydney Bonar.

Breaking Through The Lens, an initiative launched three years ago to promote emerging female directors, has unveiled the shortlist of projects vying to participate in the 3rd edition of its pitching platform set to take place during the Cannes Film Festival.

The selected projects, which will be pitched to over 100 financiers and key industry people during Cannes, were announced during the European Film Market on Feb. 25.

Spanning 13 countries, this year’s shortlist of 20 titles includes Tamika Guishard’s African dance-driven feature “Rhythm in Blues;” Daresha Kyi’s U.S. documentary “Mama Bears” which follows conservative Christian mothers whose lives are transformed as they accept their Lgbtq children; Ahd Kamel’s Saudi Arabian feature “My Driver and I” set in 80s and 90s and centering on an unlikely friendship between a privileged Saudi girl and her Nubian driver; and Laura Moss’ feature debut “Birth/Rebirth,” a female-driven Frankenstein adaptation.

Cannes — Rock Salt Releasing has acquired world sales rights for South African director Harold Hölscher’s “8,” a horror film that plays on African folklore and mythology to tell a dark story of atonement.

Produced by Man Makes A Picture with Rolling Thunder, pic stars Tsamano Sebe (“Of Good Report”), Inge Beckmann (“Escape Room”), Garth Breytenbach (“Troy: Fall of a City”) and up-and-coming actor Keita Luna. It marks the feature directorial debut of Hölscher, who also wrote the script.

“8” tells the story of a man who moves his wife and adopted daughter into the country estate he inherited after his father’s suspicious death. When the daughter takes up an unlikely friendship with farmhand Lazarus, his sinister motives are slowly revealed, unleashing the dark secret of a demon child whose insatiable appetite can only be appeased by human souls.

Rock Salt Releasing will be screening “8” at the Cannes Film Market for buyers and programmers.

Rock Salt Releasing has boarded Kate Bosworth-starrer “Nona.”

TriCoast Media launched arthouse-focused Rock Salt last year. It will present both films to buyers with screenings in Berlin.

Michael Polish’s “Nona” – also known as “No Fame” – follows two strangers who travel from Honduras to the U.S. border. Touching on issues surrounding illegal immigration and human trafficking, it stars Kate Bosworth, and Sulem Calderon as the titular Nona. Calderon will be seen next year in Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson movie “Jungle Cruise.”

Another title on Rock Salt’s slate is Guilhad Emilio Schenker’s “Madam Yankelova’s Fine Literature Club,” which follows events at a secretive women-only society whose members lure in unwitting dates, before their fate is revealed. Alex Ansky, Ania Bukstein and Razia Israeli star.

Exclusive: Susanne Bier’s baby snatching drama A Second Chance is finally coming to the United States after Rock Salt Releasing picked up the feature film, which stars Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

The film, which is produced by Zentropa, FilmFyn and Film I Vast, initially premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014 before being released in Denmark in 2015. However, with the issues surrounding children being separated from their parents front page news in the States, thanks to Donald Trump’s immigration policy, it’s getting a long-awaited theatrical bow in the U.S.

U.S. sales banner TriCoast Worldwide has launched Rock Salt Releasing, a new independent sales and distribution label spearheaded by its acquisitions exec Daisy Hamilton.

Aimed at auteur-driven festival titles, Rock Salt will distribute films in the U.S., starting with Susanne Bier’s A Second Chance, and sell high-level packages in the foreign marketplace.

In Berlin, it launched sales on Rotterdam, I Love You, the next installment in the Cities of Love franchise, overseen by Emmanuel Benbihy, and Kazuhiro Soda’s black and white observational documentary Inland Sea, which is also competing in the Berlinale official selection.

A total of 13 projects will participate in the second annual Frontières Finance & Packaging Forum, set to take place February 22-24 in Amsterdam. This is an expansion on last year’s total of 12 projects.

Having been initiated as part of the partnership between Fantasia International Film Festival and the Cannes Marche du Film, the forum will see industry experts assessing genre film projects from a packaging perspective, analysing finance, marketing and distribution strategies.

Among the selected features are works from directors Michael O’Shea (The Transfiguration), Neasa Hardiman (Happy Valley) and Can Evrenol (Baskin), producer Andy Starke and exec producer Ben Wheatley (Free Fire).

The Us distribution and production company has formalised UK partnerships to distribute its titles across multiple platforms.

The Movie Partnership, led by TriCoast UK Ltd’s Michael Lee (pictured left) and Peter Dutton (pictured right), will handle all digital releases and manage TriCoast’s TV sales.

Spirit Entertainment will handle the DVD releases while Martin Myers and film financier Bertrand Lipworth will oversee theatrical distribution.

Myers will also oversee airline sales for UK and Europe. The Us acquisitions team headed by Daisy Hamilton will continue to oversee acquisitions for TriCoast UK Ltd.

The first film to be released via TriCoast UK will be CGI animated film Heavenly Sword, base on the Sony Video Game and featuring the voices of Anna Torv, Alfred Molina and Thomas Jane.

Further releases will include 2 Jacks, directed by Bernard Rose and starring Sienna Miller, Danny Huston and Jack Huston, Toolbox Murders 2 starring Bruce Dern, family drama Among Ravens starring Amy Smart and 3 Nights in the Desert starring Vincent Piazza, Amber Tamblyn and Wes Bentley.
