One of the interesting things about getting older as a movie fan is that – at some point – you realize that folks you once considered young up-and-comers suddenly aren’t so young many more. Granted, Michael Angarano is only five years younger than me, but for some reason, when I think of him, I immediately picture him as the likeable teen star of Sky High – an underrated Disney superhero flick from the 2000s. Of course, he’s been around for twenty years since then and has never stopped churning out good work, with him especially good on Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick, and the short-lived Showtime drama, I’m Dying Up Here.
Last weekend, Angarano released his feature directorial debut, Sacramento, which he also wrote and stars in. In it, he plays a young man coming to terms with the fact that his perpetual, everlasting adolescence is coming to an inevitable end.

Three faith-based films from two independent distributors hit the top ten, a pair of Indian pics popped and traditional indies flexed at a rapidly improving box office.
Angel Studios’ The King Of Kings is looking at a $19 million weekend on 3,200 screens, its widest opening yet and the highest grossing debut of a faith-based animated film. The story of Jesus told by Charles Dickens to his young son topped the previous record holder, The Prince of Egypt from DreamWorks Animation back in 1998, for a no. 2 domestic box office berth.
Fathom Entertainment’s The Chosen franchise has its two latest installments in the top ten. Just released The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5) Part 3 grossed $6 million on 2,296 screens at no. 6. And last weekend’s holdover The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5) Part 2 nabbed $932k on 622 screens for an $11.4 million cume, rounding out the top ten. It’s the second double dip in a row...

Plot: Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey convinces long-time friend Glenn to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie to go on the adventure to reconnect. In the worn yellow seats of Glenn’s old college convertible, the two men confront their anxiety-ridden lives, addressing past mistakes and questioning what their futures hold.
Review: Sacramento has an equal amount of sweetness and sadness that it tries to balance. Starring two actors who spent their early careers in Hollywood playing teenagers, Sacramento shows us Michael Cera and Michael Angarano as what could be adult versions of any number of characters from their past projects. Co-written and directed by Angarano, Sacramento is a successor to films like Superbad if they were made through the lens of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

Michael Angarano and Michael Cera have been on screen for most of their lives. Both former child actors, each grew into an adult in front of audiences during the aughts — for Angarano, as Sean Hayes’ son in “Will and Grace” or the nepo-superhero of Disney’s teen actioner “Sky High”; for Cera, in the meaner streak comedies of “Arrested Development” and “Superbad.” But that particularly intense spotlight — being the on-screen representation for a millennial generation then coming into consciousness — is less of a burden in their mid-thirties.
“Almost 20 years ago, I would get really anxious walking by a high school because the kids would know who I was and they create a frenzy of energy that you’re not able to withstand. But now I feel very comfortable walking by a high school, because I know they have no idea who I am,” Cera says with a laugh.

American movies overflow with arrested-development cases. (There’s something very American about that.) Yet it’s not every day that you see an engaging indie comedy about “adulting” — that is, characters of a certain age who are still sealed inside the youth bubble, to the point that they regard conventional grown-up activities like holding down a job or taking care of another person as beyond-their-pay-grade endeavors.
The smart and fluky “Sacramento” is that kind of movie. It’s been called a road comedy, and technically it is, if you count as a road comedy a film in which the two main characters are old friends who may no longer even like each other, who climb into a vintage gold Chrysler Imperial — the car they shared in their youth — and drive from L.A. to Sacramento, a trip that takes all of six hours (and occupies about 25 minutes of the movie).
Why are they going there?...

The King of Kings will be Angel Studios’ top opening since juggernaut Sound of Freedom in 2023 and may well beat the reigning champ for highest-grossing faith-based animated debut, besting DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt from 1998. Deadline asks distribution chief Brandon Purdie about the response from audiences and theaters.
Michael Angarano, writer, director and star of road trip comedy Sacramento, unveils the 10-year genesis of his second feature, out today in moderate release. The Minecraft-fueled box office is looking much brighter after that grim first quarter.
With an estimated $15 million in presales, The King of Kings boasts the widest opening weekend of any Angel Studios’ film, at 3,205 theaters. “We’re excited,” Purdie said as the film eyes a possible No. 2 spot at a domestic box office that surged into action last week.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Tribeca Festival. “Sacramento” opens Friday, April 11, 2025.
As someone who’s old enough to have seen the likes of “Superbad” and “Youth in Revolt” when they first opened in theaters, it’s hard not to feel a little unstuck in time as I watch millennial teen icon Michael Cera make the gradual transition towards dad roles. I was completely unfazed by the fact that he became a father in real life, but there’s something kind of fourth-dimensional about watching an actor grow up on screen while their most famous characters stay the same age forever. It’s an uncannily vivid illustration of the vertigo we all experience as we get older — how can you be on the brink of 40 when you’re also still 18?
But some things never change, and coming of age in tandem with an actor like Cera reminds you of that too.

Michael Cera is set to star in the new adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man from director Edgar Wright. The two previously worked together on 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2025.
Cera's current project is the action road comedy Sacramento, which premieres in theaters on April 11, with Michael Angarano starring, co-writing, and directing. In an interview with Cbr's Grae Drake, Cera discussed Angarano's directorial style and compared it with Edgar Wright. "It's so different, because obviously such different kinds of workand like approaches to it," he said. "Likeworking with Edgar is interesting, because you well, he has his editor, Paul Machliss, on the set all the time, and like, cutting in real time."
"So you see back what you just shot," Cera continued. "And they also save a lot of, you know, they don't ever have to come back for reshoots,...

With a plucky, inherent likability as a performer that extends to his leisurely directorial aesthetic, Michael Angarano’s second feature Sacramento is an amiable, freewheeling road trip dramedy that rides on its central performances, courtesy of Michael Cera and the actor-writer-director as strained best friends. In exploring fatherhood, mental health, and the lies we tell ourselves (and others) to keep trucking along, Angarano and co-writer Chris Smith haven’t uncovered a wealth of revelations on tried-and-true thematic ground, yet there’s just enough smart comedic timing and dramatic perceptiveness to make this an adventure worth taking.

With 2007’s Superbad, Michael Cera co-starred in what is arguably the defining coming-of-age comedy of the 2000s. While first and foremost being one of the funniest movies of recent memory (does 2007 still count as recent?), it also had a lot to say about growing up, and what graduating high school means as you transition into your first steps of adulthood.
And now with the Michael Angarano-directed Sacramento, Cera takes a stab at one of life’s great miracles — and great challenges: becoming a dad. And while it doesn’t have anything especially deep or revelatory to say, it hits all the beats expected of such a movie and hits them well enough and with enough sincerity to make it work.

A couple of guys who’ve known each other since childhood but grew apart as adults decide to pack up their shared past and plentiful neuroses and take a trip together. Michael Angarano’s road-trip dramedy plots a similar course to Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, and even sees him filling the same writer-director-star role as Eisenberg did in a story that revolves around a similar double act: Angarano plays an outgoing, unreliable type opposite Michael Cera as his more introverted, family-oriented friend. And while Sacramento is a sunnier, slighter affair than A Real Pain, it still makes for a pretty nice ride.

Was Kristen Stewart the only one who had a crush on Robert Pattinson? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Long before Robsten took the fandom by storm, another co-star was making moves, quietly caught in the orbit of Pattinson’s moody charm. Turns out, Kristen Stewart wasn’t the only one who had eyes for Edward Cullen.
In early 2009, months before New Moon hit theaters and while Stewart was still dating Michael Angarano, rumors linked Pattinson to Nikki Reed. According to LaineyGossip, Reed had been spotted heading to Pattinson’s place before the two met up with friends, Stewart and Angarano included, at a Juno Awards after-party.
Sources claimed Reed and Pattinson were deep in conversation that night, their “heads bent close together.” When the night wrapped, all four left as a group. But cameras allegedly caught Reed and Pattinson walking arm-in-arm down the street while Stewart and Angarano took a cab. Reed reportedly stayed the night.

Wilhelm said in his Sundance review, “I was sold on the premise of satirizing opportunistic content creators who play dress-up as journalists, but weaving that into the storylines of the ensemble cast is no easy task for a sophomore feature. The plot gets lost; when it feels like there’s too much going on,...

The Action Scene explores the form, history, and visceral power of action cinema through its set pieces.Haywire.Violence erupts in a sleepy Upstate New York diner at the start of Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire (2011). Seated in the back, Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is joined by her hungover, bleary-eyed associate Aaron (Channing Tatum), who has been sent to pick her up. She refuses to budge. As Aaron is served his coffee, the camera peers at them from a few yards away, peeking around the counter at knee height, like an eavesdropping waitress wiping up spilled food. He feigns a sip, then abruptly pitches the cup’s scalding contents at Mallory. She clutches her face in pain, but no reaction shot follows: the camera retains its distant vantage on the pair, off-center in the frame, as if it, too, hasn’t fully processed this jolting disruption of a banal scene.Aaron...

Would you choose guard or prisoner? In 1971, a sociological and psychological study was conducted at the prestigious Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where Professor of psychology Dr. Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup) asked that question to some college students played by some of the brightest young stars in Hollywood. Kyle Patrick Alvarez directs the true story of 2015's The Stanford Prison Experiment, which is a gut-wrenching retelling of the true story of a theoretical study gone horribly awry. A stellar ensemble cast includes Michael Angarano, Nicholas Braun, Tye Sheridan, Ezra Miller and Olivia Thirlby as Alvarez deliberately paces the frighteningly real-life story. However, the performances of Miller and Angarano stand out as they become the de facto alphas of the two separate groups of guards and prisoners to see the effect that harsh oppression has on the human's sense of self. Zimbardo intended to strip these young men's individuality away and see what would happen.

Vertical released the official trailer for the upcoming film Sacramento on Thursday. The trailer shows pregnant Rosie (Kristen Stewart) encouraging her husband, Glenn (Michael Cera), to reconnect with his estranged friend, Rickey (Angarano), after his dad dies. Together, they go on a California road trip and reflect on their past.
The Sky High star directs the road trip comedy and stars in it with Tallie (played by Maya Erskine), his real-life wife. Angarano also co-wrote the film along with Chris Smith. Leslie Braun serves as the executive producer.

In June, Sacramento, which is Angarano’s second directorial effort, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Following his exit from Yellowstone, Kevin Costner moved on to a different Western project, which premiered in 2024 but is now available on streaming. Costner starred as John Dutton III in the first four and a half seasons of Taylor Sheridan's popular TV show. However, in between parts 1 and 2 of Yellowstone season 5, news broke that the actor was leaving the series. Given that Costner's John was the face of the neo-Western drama, his exit came as a big surprise to many.
Taylor Sheridan's upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs and prequels include 1923 season 2, The Madison, 6666, 1944, and an untitled Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler sequel series.
In the months following the announcement of Costner's Yellowstone exit, more details regarding why he left emerged. However, many were also concerned with how Sheridan would write John out of the series. The Yellowstone season 5, part 2 premiere revealed John's fate, and the show was never the same.

Dragon Ball may not have gotten a worthy live-action adaptation yet, but one epic Jackie Chan fantasy movie comes close to qualifying as a spiritual adaptation of the renowned anime. Created by Akira Toriyama in 1984, Dragon Ball went on to become one of the biggest and most internationally acclaimed shounen anime franchises in the 90s and the aughts. Over the years, the franchise has only grown from strength to strength, paving the way for newer additions, including video games, manga spinoffs, and films.
In 2009, Dragon Ball was also loosely adapted as a live-action movie, Dragonball Evolution, which turned out to be a commercial and critical disaster. Owing to its inability to get anything right about the original anime and manga, the movie was panned by viewers and critics worldwide, forcing many to grow skeptical towards anime-to-cinema adaptations in general. However, before Dragonball Evolution presented one of the worst live-action takes on anime,...

Following the film's screening at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival, star, co-writer and director Michael Angarano cited films like Alexander Payne's Sideways as a major influence for his second directorial feature. Those influences can be felt throughout Sacramento, as it's a road trip dramedy, starring Michael Cera, Kristen Stewart, and Maya Erskine, that follows two friends with polar opposite personalities who commit questionably moral yet still very human acts. While it certainly holds a lot of similarities to the cult classic, Sacramento does bring enough new commentary and ideas to the table to help it stand out from the typical comedy crowd.

The best America Ferrera movies and TV shows highlight why the Ugly Betty star is so highly regarded outside the realm of sitcoms and quirky comedy - and also show why she’s so deserving of her status as a multi-award-winning actor. Born in California in 1983, America Ferrera started her career in 2002, jumping straight into a lead role in the comedy-drama Real Women Have Curves and the Disney Channel original Gotta Kick It Up.
The momentum from this strong start never waned, and within a few years, America Ferrera would find herself becoming a household name thanks to taking the lead role in the highly successful sitcom Ugly Betty. However, while playing Betty Suarez was a career-defining performance, it’s far from the only celebrated performance from the actor - nor is it the best America Ferrera movie or TV show.

She works alongside her best friend, Aj, and her ex, Richie, to figure out why the characters she slept with are dropping dead in hilarious and absurd ways. At the same time, she tries to navigate her feelings for her new party-planning client, Isaac.
Laid thrives off the fact that the characters, especially Ruby, are deeply flawed and make reckless decisions. This debaucherous show includes a wild and unruly premise through which Ruby can process her past and grow. At the same time, the people around her also become better versions of themselves. Ultimately, the cast of predominantly established actors and comedians does an excellent job getting the audience...

Those who watched HBO’s Girls either loved the series or hated it. It was critically acclaimed and had a solid fanbase, but it was generally understood that its characters were highly flawed and insufferable almost all the time. They were certainly well-written and fully formed, but they weren’t necessarily the kind of people you wanted in your circle of friends, seeing as their redeeming qualities were few and far between. However, there were a few gems in the mix, particularly Shoshanna. Played perfectly by Zosia Mamet, Shoshanna was arguably the best character in the entire series. She was the fast-talking and genuinely supportive friend who ultimately distanced herself from Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) after realizing her worth and outgrowing them.
Since her stint on Girls, Mamet has showcased her unique and quirky style in various shows. Her newest series on Peacock, Laid,...

Peacock’s new dark comedy Laid stars the ensemble cast of Stephanie Hsu, Zosia Mamet, Tommy Martinez and Michael Angarano.
Hsu portrays Ruby, a somewhat selfish woman in her 30s who works as an event coordinator, and Zosia Mamet portrays her best friend Aj, who has an intense fascination with true crime. Aj is the one to point out the trend of Ruby’s former partners dying, which makes the premise of the show. Isaac (Tommy Martinez) starts out as one of Ruby’s clients, but he soon gets dragged into the chaos of Ruby’s wake. Michael Angarano’s Richie returns to Ruby’s life as a staple in helping her figure out her past.
Several well-known guest stars also play key figures in Ruby’s sex timeline, including Finneas O’Connell,...

Andre Hyland and Michael Angarano find themselves wrapped up in a woman's bizarre situation in Laid.
