Peacock unveiled a bold programming slate ahead for the NBCUniversal-owned streamer, headlined by the September premiere of “The Office” spinoff “The Papers” from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman.

The comedy series, starring attendees Domhnall Gleeson (“About Time”), Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”) and Oscar Nunez (“The Office”), unveiled a first look as part of NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation on Monday. Three faith-based films from two independent distributors hit the top ten, a pair of Indian pics popped and traditional indies flexed at a rapidly improving box office.

Angel Studios’ The King Of Kings is looking at a $19 million weekend on 3,200 screens, its widest opening yet and the highest grossing debut of a faith-based animated film. The story of Jesus told by Charles Dickens to his young son topped the previous record holder, The Prince of Egypt from DreamWorks Animation back in 1998, for a no. 2 domestic box office berth.

Fathom Entertainment’s The Chosen franchise has its two latest installments in the top ten. Just released The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5) Part 3 grossed $6 million on 2,296 screens at no. 6. Plot: Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey convinces long-time friend Glenn to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie to go on the adventure to reconnect. In the worn yellow seats of Glenn’s old college convertible, the two men confront their anxiety-ridden lives, addressing past mistakes and questioning what their futures hold.

Review: Sacramento has an equal amount of sweetness and sadness that it tries to balance. Starring two actors who spent their early careers in Hollywood playing teenagers, Sacramento shows us Michael Cera and Michael Angarano as what could be adult versions of any number of characters from their past projects. Co-written and directed by Angarano, Sacramento is a successor to films like Superbad if they were made through the lens of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

Michael Angarano and Michael Cera have been on screen for most of their lives. Both former child actors, each grew into an adult in front of audiences during the aughts — for Angarano, as Sean Hayes’ son in “Will and Grace” or the nepo-superhero of Disney’s teen actioner “Sky High”; for Cera, in the meaner streak comedies of “Arrested Development” and “Superbad.” But that particularly intense spotlight — being the on-screen representation for a millennial generation then coming into consciousness — is less of a burden in their mid-thirties.

“Almost 20 years ago, I would get really anxious walking by a high school because the kids would know who I was and they create a frenzy of energy that you’re not able to withstand. But now I feel very comfortable walking by a high school, because I know they have no idea who I am,” Cera says with a laugh.

American movies overflow with arrested-development cases. (There’s something very American about that.) Yet it’s not every day that you see an engaging indie comedy about “adulting” — that is, characters of a certain age who are still sealed inside the youth bubble, to the point that they regard conventional grown-up activities like holding down a job or taking care of another person as beyond-their-pay-grade endeavors.

The smart and fluky “Sacramento” is that kind of movie. It’s been called a road comedy, and technically it is, if you count as a road comedy a film in which the two main characters are old friends who may no longer even like each other, who climb into a vintage gold Chrysler Imperial — the car they shared in their youth — and drive from L.A. to Sacramento, a trip that takes all of six hours (and occupies about 25 minutes of the movie).

The King of Kings will be Angel Studios’ top opening since juggernaut Sound of Freedom in 2023 and may well beat the reigning champ for highest-grossing faith-based animated debut, besting DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt from 1998. As someone who’s old enough to have seen the likes of “Superbad” and “Youth in Revolt” when they first opened in theaters, it’s hard not to feel a little unstuck in time as I watch millennial teen icon Michael Cera make the gradual transition towards dad roles. I was completely unfazed by the fact that he became a father in real life, but there’s something kind of fourth-dimensional about watching an actor grow up on screen while their most famous characters stay the same age forever. It’s an uncannily vivid illustration of the vertigo we all experience as we get older — how can you be on the brink of 40 when you’re also still 18?

But some things never change, and coming of age in tandem with an actor like Cera reminds you of that too.

Michael Cera is set to star in the new adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man from director Edgar Wright. The two previously worked together on 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2025.

Cera's current project is the action road comedy Sacramento, which premieres in theaters on April 11, with Michael Angarano starring, co-writing, and directing. In an interview with Cbr's Grae Drake, Cera discussed Angarano's directorial style and compared it with Edgar Wright. "It's so different, because obviously such different kinds of workand like approaches to it," he said. In exploring fatherhood, mental health, and the lies we tell ourselves (and others) to keep trucking along, Angarano and co-writer Chris Smith haven’t uncovered a wealth of revelations on tried-and-true thematic ground, yet there’s just enough smart comedic timing and dramatic perceptiveness to make this an adventure worth taking.

The 34-year-old actress was joined at the event by her real-life friends and co-stars Michael Angarano and Maya Erskine on Monday night (April 7) at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.

Michael not only stars in the movie, he also co-wrote and directed the film. Here is a synopsis: “Rickey (Angarano), an energetic and free-spirited young man with a Peter Pan complex, convinces his long-time friend Glenn (Michael Cera) to hit pause on his blissful domestic life and embark on an impromptu road trip across California.”

With 2007’s Superbad, Michael Cera co-starred in what is arguably the defining coming-of-age comedy of the 2000s. While first and foremost being one of the funniest movies of recent memory (does 2007 still count as recent?), it also had a lot to say about growing up, and what graduating high school means as you transition into your first steps of adulthood.

And now with the Michael Angarano-directed Sacramento, Cera takes a stab at one of life’s great miracles — and great challenges: becoming a dad. And while it doesn’t have anything especially deep or revelatory to say, it hits all the beats expected of such a movie and hits them well enough and with enough sincerity to make it work.

A couple of guys who’ve known each other since childhood but grew apart as adults decide to pack up their shared past and plentiful neuroses and take a trip together. Michael Angarano’s road-trip dramedy plots a similar course to Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, and even sees him filling the same writer-director-star role as Eisenberg did in a story that revolves around a similar double act: Angarano plays an outgoing, unreliable type opposite Michael Cera as his more introverted, family-oriented friend. With a screenplay by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, The Dead of Winter follows a widowed fisherwoman (Thompson) trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard who interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager (Laurel Marsden), only to realize that she is the young victim’s only hope. In 1971, a sociological and psychological study was conducted at the prestigious Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where Professor of psychology Dr. Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup) asked that question to some college students played by some of the brightest young stars in Hollywood. Kyle Patrick Alvarez directs the true story of 2015's The Stanford Prison Experiment, which is a gut-wrenching retelling of the true story of a theoretical study gone horribly awry. A stellar ensemble cast includes Michael Angarano, Nicholas Braun, Tye Sheridan, Ezra Miller and Olivia Thirlby as Alvarez deliberately paces the frighteningly real-life story. However, the performances of Miller and Angarano stand out as they become the de facto alphas of the two separate groups of guards and prisoners to see the effect that harsh oppression has on the human's sense of self. Vertical released the official trailer for the upcoming film Sacramento on Thursday. The trailer shows pregnant Rosie (Kristen Stewart) encouraging her husband, Glenn (Michael Cera), to reconnect with his estranged friend, Rickey (Angarano), after his dad dies. Together, they go on a California road trip and reflect on their past.

The Sky High star directs the road trip comedy and stars in it with Tallie (played by Maya Erskine), his real-life wife. Angarano also co-wrote the film along with Chris Smith. Leslie Braun serves as the executive producer.

While the road trip comedy is Cera and Stewart’s first project together, it’s a reunion for Angarano and Stewart, who starred together in 2004’s Speak, where they met. The pair then dated in real life from 2005 to 2009.

In June, Sacramento, which is Angarano’s second directorial effort, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Michael Angarano is headed to “Sacramento.” After a solid career as a child actor (the young version of the “Almost Famous” star), morphing into plenty of good indie roles and flexing his chops in comedy, young Angarano is all grown up and despite the boyish good looks is actually 37-years-old now.

Vertical Entertainment has just unveiled the trailer that stars Michael Cera, Michael Angarano, Maya Erskine and Kristen Stewart. Angarano directs from a script co-written by him and Chris Smith. Leslie Braun is on board as an executive producer and the film is produced by Stephen Braun, Chris Abernathy, Eric B. Fleischman, Sam Grey, Michael Angarano, Chris Smith.

The official synopsis reads,

“Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey (Michael Angarano) convinces long-time friend Glenn (Michael Cera) to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart) to go on the adventure to reconnect.

Premiering last year at Tribeca Festival, just before he was seen in Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Michael Angarano’s second directorial feature Sacramento brought together the impressive cast of Michael Cera, Kristen Stewart, and Maya Erskine, along with the actor-director-writer-producer himself. Picked up by Vertical, who will release the drama theatrically on April 11, they’ve now debuted the first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: “Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey (Michael Angarano) convinces long-time friend Glenn (Michael Cera) to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart) to go on the adventure to reconnect. In the worn yellow seats of Glenn’s old college convertible, the two men confront their anxiety-ridden lives, addressing past mistakes and questioning what their futures hold.

Michael Angarano is making his sophomore directorial effort with road trip coming of age comedy “Sacramento” — and it sure doesn’t hurt to have an all-star cast behind the wheel.

“Minx” alum Angarano directs and stars in “Sacramento,” which he co-wrote with Chris Smith. This is Angarano’s second feature he’s directed; the star made his debut with 2017’s “Avenues.”

“Sacramento” centers on Angarano and Michael Cera’s characters, as the duo embark on a road trip before Cera’s onscreen wife Kristen Stewart gives birth. “PEN15” co-creator and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” actress Maya Erskine, who is also Angarano’s real-life partner, co-stars.

Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Alia Shawkat (Blink Twice) will topline The Wrong Girls, a new Neon film marking the directorial debut of Dylan Meyer, which is up and running in Los Angeles — one of the first indies to kick off production following the devastating wildfires.

Others in the cast include Seth Rogen — who also produces via Point Grey — as well as Kumail Nanjiani, Lakeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale.

Written and directed by Meyer, the film follows Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip, when a case of mistaken identity throws their lives into chaos. Neon will release the film in U.S. theaters and also reps international rights.

Laid thrives off the fact that the characters, especially Ruby, are deeply flawed and make reckless decisions. This debaucherous show includes a wild and unruly premise through which Ruby can process her past and grow. At the same time, the people around her also become better versions of themselves. Those who watched HBO’s Girls either loved the series or hated it.
