- Jailed for robbing his brother's unscrupulous employer, a simpleton has a transformation while in prison, emerging with a violent mission for revenge.
- Karim Khan is employed as driver for a gangster named Don, who has an accident with his car, and asks Karim to take the blame for it for a hefty sum of cash, which Karim does so, and is imprisoned. But Don does not fulfill his promise, and as a result, Karim's wife, Razia, and new-born son are left destitute. Razia complains to Police Inspector Anwar, who arrests Don and holds him in prison, pending his trial in court. When Anwar finds out that his new-born son, Iqbal, is in need of a pace-maker, which he is unable to afford, he makes a compromise with Don, who lets him have one. Iqbal undergoes surgery and a pace-maker number 786, considered lucky in Islamic faith, is attached to his tiny heart. But Don and a prostitute by the name of Banoo have other plans for Anwar, which they carry out successfully, and abduct young Iqbal, who ends up growing on the streets as an orphan named Allah Rakha. Several years later, Allah Rakha has grown up, and is friendly with a prostitute named Rani, who happens to be the daughter of Banoo. When News-reporter decides to do TV report on Rani's life, she does not realize that she has opened up a Pandora's box, that will bring the past back to life, and expose her life to danger, deceit, and possible death.
- Raja Thakur (Sunil Dutt) is an outlaw who fights oppression and corruption in his own unique way. This Robin Hood like figure is a feared and respected figure among the villagers and when he attends a dance performance given by the famous dancer Janiya (Rekha), he finds himself attracted to her. He shows his feelings openly but this proves to be a hindrance to Janiya - people now consider her to be the exclusive property of the outlaw and fear to ask her to perform for them. A rival gang kidnaps Janiya and invoke the wrath of Raja Thakur. Now Raja Thakur will have to leave the rural area, where he rules, and go into an unknown territory, to deal with unknown gangsters, and he must do so in order to keep his word.
- Based in a small village, Gauri, who lives with her widowed mother, Ganga, has matured and her marriage is arranged with Bombay-based Ramesh. When Ramesh comes to wed her, he is shocked to find her playing Kabaddi and wrestling with her younger brother, Dhanu. He attempts to get intimate with her but fails. Hoping that things will change for the better after the marriage, he does marry her, but she is unable to reciprocate his affections. Shortly thereafter, her life will undergo many changes after she witnesses her husband in the arms of a more mature, taller, drop-dead gorgeous, and well endowed village belle, Bijli.

- Mamta lives a poor lifestyle with her husband, Dinu, and two sons, Mohan, and Sohan. After 10 days, Gupta himself approaches them and begs them to let his wife keep Sohan for life. They tearfully agree. Then Mohan gets into trouble, and Dinu scolds him, only to find out that Mohan has run away from home. A search proves futile, and the couple continue to live a childless life. Now 17 years later, Mamta is seriously ill, and asks Dinu to bring Sohan back. Dinu goes to the Zamindar's house where he meets a young man who identifies himself as the real son, Suraj, and informs him that Sohan has been asked to leave. A devastated Dinu loses his memory and roams listlessly on the streets of Calcutta, unable to remember anything. The question is will Dinu and Mamta be united with their sons during their respective lifetime, and what has become of Mohan, and who exactly is Suraj?
- Kali is an uppercaste but naive and dim-witted Brahman and lives with his stepmother and her son. He has fallen in love with Pushpavali who is of a low caste. Kali's mother frowns on this and on the next small pretext throws him out of the house. The villagers do not show any sympathy for Kali. Kali and Pushpavali decide to leave the village. Princess Vidyotma hears Pushpavali singing and invites her to the palace to be her maid. Vidyotma is not married and will only marry a man more intelligent than her. She has humiliated and defeated many men, and no man seems to even match wits with her. A sage decides to bring her arrogance to an end, and he asks the naive Kali to accompany him to see the Princess, Kali does so, and through the Sage's help defeats the Princess. The Princess marries Kali and is aghast to find that he is illiterate, and dim-witted. Kali gets humiliated by the princess, and he decides to educate himself. His true love is still Pushpavali. But he is now married, and the princess will definitely not let him leave for a low-caste woman.
- Randhir and Ranvir Verma are twins. Randhir is straightforward, while Ranvir is a petty criminal. These petty thefts add up, and soon the police arrest Ranvir, and he is sentenced to prison. In prison, Ranvir incurs the wrath of a gangster, Tony, and is killed. Randhir undertakes to find the killer, and gets himself arrested, and imprisoned to get to see who the killer is. After getting out from prison, Randhir plans to avenge his brother's death, without knowing that he himself could endanger his very life, as well the life of his girlfriend, Mala. The song "Chandni chand se hoti hai, sitaron se nahin, pyar bhi ek se hota hai hazaron se nahin..." is still popular.
- Mala comes from a wealthy family and lives in a palatial house with her dad, a businessman, mother a housewife, and a younger brother. She falls in love with a middle-classed man named Sajjan and wants to marry him, but her father refuses to permit her to do so. She adamantly leaves his house, marries Sajjan and goes to live with his family, consisting of his mother; father, Dinanath, & younger brother, Vijay. The family soon learns to love, respect, and trust her, and she soon runs the entire household. She soon gives birth to a daughter and a son. Vijay completes his education, but is inclined to get involved in get rich quick schemes, and ends up earning a lot of money in a short period of time. When the rest of the family find out that he has obtained this money through smuggling, they ask him to leave the house, which he does and goes to live with a woman named Ruhi, a cabaret dancer. Thereafter the household's base collapses as Mala's daughter is killed in an accident; her son falls in bad company and starts gambling and stealing; her husband is arrested for embezzlement and theft; while her father-in-law loses his job. Now Mala can only turn to her Vijay and her father for help - but will they be willing to assist her after all that has happened?
