- A team of dedicated detectives investigate gruesome murders across London.
- Commander Clare Blake has risen to the top of her profession in the male-dominated Metropolitan Police Service and is now the head of the serious crimes unit. Some years previously she arrested James Lampton for murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison but is now out on parole and is a successful author with a best-selling book. Blake's colleagues however, especially DCI Mike Hedges, believe Lampton is responsible for another murder and are out to prove his guilt. Things become complicated when Blake and Lampton become intimate and the question arises whether he is being honest with her or is simply a master manipulator.
- A former nun turned criminal profiler is called in to investigate the horrific ritualistic murders of two middle aged women. Starring Fiona Shaw, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Colin Salmon.

But Harrington begins to discover more than he wanted to know about himself, and he may be in danger of going too far.
- A psychiatric patient, Reginald Aitken, who has been hospitalised for the last 18 years manages to escape from hospital. The same night a 17 year old girl, Sadie Carr (Commander Blake's god daughter), goes missing from a night club. Reginald is discovered holding the girl's body and covered in his blood. Reginald is thought to be the killer as his fingerprints were found on the murder weapon, however, the body of an earlier victim is uncovered, and it is proven that she was killed when he was locked up in the hospital. DCI Bridges gets the unsolicited help from a rather rude DI from Amsterdam, Van Hauten, who had similar cases in Amsterdam.
- The widows of three men killed while trying to steal a famous painting, join forces to find their husband's killers and finish off the job of stealing the painting.
- Commander Blake is still dealing with the aftermath of the James Lampton case. Not only has he pleaded not guilty to the murders for which he is accused, it now means that Blake will have to testify about their sexual relationship. With the added news coverage, Blake finds that the sister of one of Lampton's victims is now stalking her. Blake's own sister, who is terminally ill with cancer, moves in with her. In a separate case, a computer hacker who has gained access to online medical records and changing information is terrorizing St. Barnaby's hospital. His first victim is someone who had a severe allergy to nuts and the second is someone who is allergic to penicillin. The hacker threatens to kill one patient every 24 hours if he doesn't receive 20 million pounds.
- Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Blackton is called into the Met to investigate two possible scandals. Known as Blackdog, he has a well-deserved reputation at pursuing corrupt police officers. The first case is the Cripps shooting where an unarmed man was shot by an armed police squad. Although a coroner's enquiry found no fault, Commander Blake has raised doubt as to DCI Mike Hedges' role. The case takes a particular turn when one of the armed officers, Graham Warner, is found dead. Blake also finds herself under investigation by Blackton over her sexual relationship with accused serial killer James Lampton. With the trial approaching, there is great concern as to the adverse publicity that will result.
- Students get involved in a violent Internet-based game, around the same time as a series of murders - is there a connection?.
- When the DCI on the case goes into labor, Commander Clare Blake takes charge in the investigation of a dead 2-year-old girl found on the site of a now abandoned psychiatric institute. The girl has been dead for several years but the body was preserved in a tightly sealed drum and is well preserved as a result. She also has a cross branded onto her chest. The pathologist's report is inconclusive so the team starts to check medical records of former patients. Eric Thornton and John Littlewood figure prominently in hospital files, but when it's confirmed that Littlewood has died, the police focus all their effort on Thornton.
- Donald Griffith is a fraud in every respect. Not only is he cheating on his wife--with both his personal assistant and his firm's caterer--he has defrauded his clients out of millions of pounds. He is arrested at his firm's Christmas party but is soon released on bail. He knows he will go to jail for fraud and has few options. When he is found the next day floating in his swimming pool, the police must determine if it was suicide or whether his wife, one of his mistresses, or an irate client did him in. Assistant Commissioner Les Branton, whose sister lost all of her investments, asks Commander Clare Blake to take charge of the investigation. When the autopsy reveals that he did not drown, the police know that they have a murder investigation on their hands.
- Scotland Yard Commander Clare Blake is called back from holiday to investigate the apparent murder of Father Thomas Martin who was stabbed 29 times in his church. He was well respected in the community and had been instrumental in calming the local community after serious rioting some 5 years before. Thugs - reformed or otherwise -constantly surrounded him as he also ran a drop in centre and a boxing club. There are rumours of child abuse as Father Thomas seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time with children. The police initially focus on Denny Wade, an ex-con who had stabbed his wife over 50 times but the solution is found in events that occurred before the riots even took place.

Warrington is a man with bipolar disease who suffers from frightening mood swings - as Pat will discover.

- DCI Roisin Connor finds herself investigating the death of Angela Dutton who either jumped, or was pushed, off her balcony falling several stories to her death. Connor isn't pleased to learn that Det. Chief Supt. Walker has been asked to keep an eye on the case. The autopsy reveals that Angela was struck on the back of the head before her fall. Angela was a prostitute who worked at her boyfriend's private members sex club. When Connor learns that Angela's mother Susan Delray was killed in 1990 and the case remains unsolved, she explores the possibility that the two deaths are somehow connected. When she discovers that a cabinet minister, a judge and a senior police officer were involved with Susan Delray, the case takes on a new dimension.

When the parents and their two younger children returned home the previous evening, they assumed she was in, but did not check. The girl's mother Diedre is a compulsive cleaner and cleaned the house before going to bed. When they found the girl the next morning, the distraught parents moved her to the study. Between the cleaning and moving the body, much of the evidence has been contaminated. The police suspect however that someone she knew killed her and eventually focus on a teen-aged neighbor, Michael Summerby. Det. Chief Supt. Michael Walker meanwhile works to ensure that a dangerous sociopath isn't released on parole. He's also having trouble with his 15-year old son who has become withdrawn and seems to have lost all interest in school. When the boy is arrested, Walker decides to take some time off to help him.
- Governor Helen Hewitt is eager to discuss her prison renovation plans in a television interview, but due to an internal leak to the tabloids, she never gets a chance to explain. Instead, she's blindsided on-camera with the morning headlines decrying the excessive cost of Barfield's renovation. Back at the rock pile, tensions are mounting. While one inmate attempts an escape, another's cell is burgled. And a new inmate arrives with too much money and too little sense.
- Two new prisoners arrive at Barfield: Norman is a tough, dangerous repeat offender; young Anthony is a first-timer and plenty scared. Because of the earlier escape, Helen is placed under review by the Prison Service, who are also considering shutting Barfield down completely.
- Anthony and his cellmates go to trial for their part in the hanging incident. Helen is called as a witness and must lock horns with Anthony's formidable lawyer.
- As Barfield Prison begins to take shape again, Helen hires several new officers and two female employees: psychologist Maureen and educator Zania. Having lied about his marital situation, prisoner Alan is granted home leave for the weekend.
- Barfield wakes up to a tragedy involving Alan as Helen prepares for an important visit from headquarters. Maureen leads a drama group, but Helen and the officers believe she's getting too close to Norman. Anthony and dealer Snoopy plan a hit on their tormentor, Braithwaite, aka 'Tarzan'.
- Helen is reinstated as governor of Barfield, and she tries to comfort the prison psychologist, Annette following her ordeal. Snoopy's sentence is extended, although he doesn't remember what he did in a drug-fueled rage. In an effort to calm the raging Tarzan within Braithwaite, he is allowed a visit from his aging, dying father.
- Teenager Madeline Fuller is raped and then killed and a couple of months later Walker still has no leads. He realises that the manner of Madeline's death follows the same pattern of similar unsolved crimes stretching back over some years. To assist the police with their investigation Max Stanford, an American criminal profiler, is brought onto the team.
- A blood-stained Milton Jones is found after his girl-friend is murdered. He claims that he was in amnesiac shock and cannot recall the murder, but only vaguely remembers that another man was in the victim's flat before her death. He is arrested but evidence seems to suggest his innocence. As he is black - and the dead girl was white - his family accuse Roisin of racist behaviour. Following two more slayings, it appears that a serial killer is targetting white women with black boyfriends.
- Single mother Suzy McDonald walks into a nightmare when she returns home from work to find her baby daughter Poppy has been slain and her nanny,Leanne, has gone missing. The police eventually locate and arrest Leanne. They find out that her real name is Rachel Burns and that she has acted as a nanny for other families in the past, in each case using assumed names. Why, if she has nothing to hide?
- Metroploitan Police Commander Jack Daly and his wife Honor, a magistrate ,are murdered in their home and valuables are stolen in what initially seems to have been a burglary that went wrong. However there are several people who stand to benefit by the couple's death including her brother Paul, a man with gambling debts, Janet the house-keeper, also a beneficiary in their will, and most especially their twin sons Michael and Rory who will inherit a vast fortune. Given the high profiles of the victims Walker is under pressure from his superiors to get a quick result.
- Annette, the prison psychologist, has a delayed mental breakdown following her heinous attack. Helen, vowing that the show will go on, takes charge of the musical and hires some local thespians to help out. Meanwhile, Barfield's most violent high-security inmates are planning a breakout using the performance as a cover.
- Mike Walker is on leave when an old friend, Bill, asks for his help. His sister Margaret disappeared some years earlier and he has recently been contacted by a woman whose daughter, Anna, has also gone missing. The common link is that both were married to a man named Kevin Reid. D.I. Mullins, who was in charge of Margaret's case, is bullish but lets Walker in on his findings. Eventually Margaret's body, minus the legs, is found in a large box.Evidence points to the culprit being Kevin's brother Ronnie, a simple lad with a speech impediment.
- Recovering alcoholic Ken Randle seeks revenge on Terry Dyer, just out of jail, whom he believes killed his son Mark twelve years earlier, though Dyer has always protested his innocence, claiming the killer was Nick Fisher, who Mark caught having sex with his sister Sarah,then only thirteen. Then Nick Fisher is killed. His widow identifies Dyer as hanging around Nick's workplace but CCTV proves that he was some miles away at the time of the murder.
- Helen Hewitt, prison board member and criminology researcher, joins a team tasked with investigating a suspicious death that occurred during a recent riot at the all-male Barfield Prison. When the governor of Barfield is sacked, Helen takes the job on a transitional basis, an appointment that bypasses the obvious successor and ignites resentment among both inmates and guards.
- Gov. Helen Hewitt has left Barfield Prison to take a research position in the U.S., studying hostage and siege procedures. After two years in America, she gets the chance to put her negotiating skills to the test when she's called back home. Once again Barfield has broken out in riot, and this time, a very key person has been taken hostage.
- Following a visit from his aged father, Braithwaite has become the model prisoner, so much so that he asks not only to take part in the upcoming musical, but also volunteers for any and all social activities. Warily, Helen takes a risk sending him back into the population. Officer Morgan, now a shattered man following his hostage ordeal, is called to an inquiry to explain what happened. Snoopy, angling to get out of the protected prisoners wing, agrees to be an informer.
- 1997–200947mTV-147.6 (83)TV EpisodeThe corpse of a high class call-girl, Sonya, is discovered in a trunk at Heathrow Airport. The prime suspect is a highly influential Ukrainian billionaire, Vitali Malikov, and - against diplomatic advice - Mike Walker arrests him, aware that Malikov has friends in high places, for which reason he is keen to bring him down.
- Surgeon Jonathan Carlisle, a friend of Mike Walker, is murdered and suspicion falls on Gary Webster who blamed Carlisle for the death of his daughter Amber during an operation. However, two other doctors come into the frame - Neelah Shahjani, who confesses that she found the dead man with a needle in his arm,and the helpful Dr. Lawson, who is prepared to show a video to prove that the hospital was not culpable for Amber's death.
- Self-made man Ray Herper and his bright teenage son Andy are seen to be driving at a chalk pit. The next day the corpse of young Maria Cole is found there and the police trace the tracks to the Harpers. Andy has a friend Darren, who is lower class and has had dealings with the police. The boys admit to being at the quarry but deny all knowledge of Maria. In fact she was a lap dancer at a club to which Harper took Andy but he fled from her. CCTV footage at a garage where Maria went after being threatened by hoodies shows her getting into a car with Andy and Darren and they are charged with her murder.
- Gunmen in a car force an ambulance off the road, killing a paramedic. The ambulance overturns and the gangsters shoot and kill patient Sebastian Cole. It becomes clear that Cole and his friend Ross were working as drug smugglers but D.C.I. McGill is annoyed when Mike and Roisin crash in to interview Ross as McGill had had him under surveillance. Cole's girlfriend, Imogen, is an 'It' girl frequently seen in the pages of tabloids. She is distraught at the death and her mother tells the police that she was innocent of all knowledge of the drug running. The team are not so sure but need proof.
- A young girl falls out of the Big Wheel at a funfair and is killed. Initially it is thought her death was accidental but Tess, the fair's fortune teller, who turns out to be a relative of Satchell, comes to see him with her suspicions that a development company, who want the land occupied by the fair, may be responsible. The fair's owner Tommy Gilbert, gets her to back -track on her statement but then he too is murdered.
- The vicious Bilkin family commit an armed robbery on a jeweller's shop, killing the shop manager. Miller, a rival to the Bilkins, informs on but they walk and later Miller is murdered. D.S. Satchell witnesses the killing and realizes that he and his pregnant wife and their daughter are now targets. His fears are realized when his family go missing.
