Summer is no time for sadness, with new shows debuting throughout the season. With the official 2024 Emmys deadline now in the rearview, June is when the TV calendar resets, with new and returning shows now eligible for next year’s awards ceremony… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
June’s new TV lineup includes a handful of book adaptations, including Hulu’s “Queenie” starring Dionne Brown, Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” with Renate Reinsve and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Eva Longoria-starrer “Land of Women,” and Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane,” based on the YA series The Lady Janies (and loosely on some Tudor history… very loosely). Shows like “Clipped” and “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” stem from books about real people and events, while on the reality front there’s also Peacock’s “Queer Planet” and a docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleader squad on Netflix. Disney+ expands the...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Hi. Yes. Sorry to bother you. Hello. Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, Deborah Vance? The Emmy award-winning series "Hacks" has just finished its phenomenal third season, one that many fans (myself included) were terrified wouldn't be able to match the triumphant heights of season 2. The second season ended in a way that felt complete if Max were to have pulled the plug on the show, but after the absolutely dynamite season 3 finale, "Hacks" has proven itself as a series that can and should continue as long as stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder want to keep playing Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, respectively.
It's exciting as a "Hacks" fan from the very start to see so many people finally catching onto what is arguably the best comedy show on TV that isn't "Abbott Elementary" or the not-really-a-comedy brilliance that is "The Bear," especially...

As we head into the summer, Hulu is shaping up to be one of the most valuable streaming services to have in the month of June. Not only is one of the best shows on television returning for its third season, but the Disney-owned general entertainment platform is also launching a new comedy banner, and FX goes behind the scenes of one of the most explosive situations in recent sports history.
“The Bear” will drop all 10 of its Season 3 episodes on June 27 in what is undoubtedly one of the year’s most anticipated releases. However, that is not the only hot title coming to Hulu in June, the streamer will also launch its “Hulu’s Laughing Now” brand, the sports-focused series “Clipped” that dramatizes the downfall of Donald Sterling as the owner of the LA Clippers, and the documentary “Brats” that brings together members of the legendary Brat Pack to chronicle their rise to fame.

The Bear‘s third season may be on everyone’s minds, but the series is making another TV milestone first as the Emmy-winning dramedy makes its linear debut on FX. The FX original has only previously been available to stream exclusively on Hulu, but fans will finally be able to tune in for a four-day marathon of Season 1 beginning Sunday, June 2 in anticipation of the upcoming third season debuting on streaming on Thursday, June 27. With the amount of streaming content available continuing to increase, this new update from Xumo will help viewers get to watching faster.
The evolution of streaming has led people to a problem that most would say they’d be happy to have: there’s just too much to watch! There’s simply too much high-quality content split amongst streaming services nowadays, and that has led to a real problem among consumers: content discovery issues. A recent report showed that 36% of Americans spend 10 minutes or more trying to find something new to watch when they turn on their set, and smart TV operating systems are a highly important method of delivering content recommendations to viewers. The fine folks at Xumo know this quite well and have introduced a series of new features to the Xumo TV operating system to help make content discovery a snap.

It felt like “Hacks” just returned (it did), but Season 3 is now over — and it wrapped up with arguably its best finale yet. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the killer finale and the Max comedy’s Emmy chances with the season in the rearview.
“Hacks” set the stage for a scintillating Season 4 (not yet ordered) in the final minutes of “Bulletproof” when Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pulls a trump card over Deborah (Jean Smart). Unlike its Season 2 ender, no one can mistake this for a series finale. The episode also capped off “Hacks'” strongest season yet, but will it be able to take down “The Bear”? The reigning Best Comedy Series champ feels unbeatable in the top category, especially with Season 3 looming, but perhaps “Hacks” can walk away with other trophies?

Following the exhilarating success of the first two seasons, The Bear is back for its third run. The series, which premiered in June 2022, follows Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) on his journey to revive The Beef restaurant amidst the bustling life of Chicago. A Glimpse into the Chaos The latest trailer expands on a shorter teaser from last week, maintaining the Rolling Stones’ Mixed Emotions as its soundtrack. It showcases the escalating tension between Carmy’s vision and the execution of it, with scenes of Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) mocking Carmy’s list of ‘non-negotiables.’ This was certainly about what happens next suggests...

Allison Williams and Ebon Moss-Bachrach had one of television’s most startling scenes during the original run of Girls. In it, Moss-Bachrach chomped on her hindquarters with a gusto usually reserved for an Italian beef sandwich in his current show, The Bear.
Not everyone was on board with the scene or the show when it first aired. But now, the series has been rediscovered by Gen Z viewers, and they’re more attuned to Williams’s character, Marnie Michaels, and the show’s vibe than previous generations.
The actress reflected on that along with her costar in a recent Vanity Fair video.
“My theory is what was coded as selfishness among Millennials is now coded as self-care and just being aware of what you need, and advocating for your needs and standing up for yourself,” Williams said in the video. “And so Gen Z is like, ‘No, we get her.

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

Hands! Just when you thought Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and co. were getting a handle on their high-end restaurant, the challenges just keep on coming. FX on Hulu’s The Bear will dish up an all-new season to kick off summer. Season 2 already elevated the show with its numerous guest stars as well as the transition of the family sandwich shop into a fine dining establishment. Season 1 swept the first of two Emmys ceremonies this year, with the second hoping to follow in those footsteps.
After Season 1 raked in its 10 Emmys at the 75th ceremony, the cast and crew had various responses to the comedy genre label. Since the show’s launch, stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach have all been cast in other high profile projects like The Iron Claw for White, The Fantastic Four for Moss-Bachrach and Luca Guadagnino’s next film, The Hunt, for Edebiri.
Fans of the intense kitchen-set series may anticipate new faces and poignant needle drops like Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” for Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie.

Are we excited for The Bear season 3? Well, to borrow an old ursine hypothetical: does a bear shit in the woods? Look, we’ve been at this a long time and writing intros is getting harder. “If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t go out,” is the new tagline for everyone’s favorite dysfunctional family and kitchen drama, “The Bear,” from FX, which returns for season three on Hulu on June 27. Starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, all of whom have become fast-rising stars ever since the series took off in the summer of 2022, “The Bear” continues the drama and saga of Carmy and his cohorts going all-in on a fine dining establishment in Chicago, and trying to stay afloat despite demanding overhead costs.

Season one of The Bear was about the stress of trying to save a financially ailing neighborhood restaurant, and season two captured the pressure of conceiving and opening a new — and very different — restaurant on a tight timeline.
Season three of the Emmy-winning, FX-produced Hulu series will follow Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and the rest of the team at The Bear as they try to keep their new venture going and live up to Carmy’s increasingly exacting standards. Or so a full trailer for the coming season, due June 27 on Hulu, promises.
The two-minute trailer greatly expands on a shorter teaser from last week (though it keeps The Rolling Stones’ “Mixed Emotions” as its soundtrack) by showcasing the tension between Carmy’s vision — he shares a list of “non-negotiables” that Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and the rest of the crew mock — and the day-to-day execution of it. Ramy Youssef’s latest HBO special, “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” had been in the works for years — and had evolved over time as Youssef got in a relationship and eventually got married. But some of his routine also became very more front and center for audiences in the wake of the war in Gaza.
“There’s stuff that I do touch on, a tightrope walk of taking really big concepts, and then making them super personal,” Youssef tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “With our show [Hulu’s “Ramy”], we had already done that with Palestine and Israel. And in my stand up, I had already done versions of it. But in the last seven or eight months, it became something that has risen to the surface for everybody. When you’re taking your time to talk about it for 10 minutes in a set, it’s important to you. On a show,...

In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

Everybody is waiting for summertime for various reasons. We all rely on these three short but shiny months to heal us from the troubles that have been with us the whole year. And summer 2024 is promising to be very rich in new releases!
Many of our beloved shows’ new seasons are going to be released this summer, and it only means one thing: put aside whatever you are watching now and get ready to dive back into the greatest stories you once followed.
Here are 5 shows we are already rewatching and so should you.
1. House of the Dragon
Season 2: Releasing June 16 on HBO
13 years ago, the world was hit by a storm called Game of Thrones. There was almost no one who hadn't at least watched an episode or two. The show was like nothing else on TV, killing off its central characters and providing the viewers with lots of violence and nudity.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach may soon be a household name due to his standout supporting role as Richie Jerimovich on the hit FX (for Hulu) television series “The Bear.” And if that doesn’t do it, perhaps his recently announced casting as Ben Grimm aka The Thing in Marvel’s film version of “The Fantastic Four” will.
Of course, there are some who have been all-in on Moss-Bachrach since his performance as Desi on HBO’s “Girls.” Those playing catchup on his career should perhaps start with an even-earlier role that stands out for many now in retrospect — a brief appearance as Frederick the bellboy in Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums.” With a mop of floppy curls under a round hotel cap, Moss-Bachrach was only 23 at the time of filming, but held his own against scene partner and legendary screen actor Gene Hackman.
“He’s a pro,” said Moss-Bachrach of Hackman during a profile in GQ.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

The show of summer 2024 — for some, of the whole year — is almost back. FX’s The Bear returns June 27 with more tense kitchen drama, classic rock, and superb performances, including from Jeremy Allen White, who looks predictably stressed in this first trailer.

"The Bear" is open for business and viewers are once again invited to a front-row seat in the kitchen ... if you can take the heat, that is. The FX/Hulu original hit series has been off our airwaves since its second season wrapped in June of last year, but every foodie's patience is about to be rewarded. The last time we checked in with this oddball assortment of characters, Jeremy Allen White's chef Carmy, Ayo Edebiri's creative partner Sydney, Ebon Moss-Bachrach's fiery Richie, and the rest of the gang had traded in their rugged beef stand for the cozy confines of a bona fide restaurant known as The Bear -- despite an awfully unlucky (and nigh catastrophic) series of unfortunate events.

The Bear is about to get more dysfunctional.
FX released a brief trailer for season three on Friday, offering a preview of the chaos to come after Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy opens the new restaurant alongside Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
After opening their now revamped restaurant — they transformed their sandwich shop last season — the trio and team experience tension as they face the pressure of delivering excellent service and dining.
“I’m getting drilled out there,” Moss-Bachrach’s Richie can be seen telling Carmy. The pair are later shown getting in a confrontation. The team will face even more mishaps including food and silverware dropping on the floor, the stove catching on fire and more.
“This is a dysfunctional kitchen,” Sydney says, with both Carmy and Richie responding, “Show me a functional one.”

The teaser shows Syd (Ayo Edebiri) taking charge, Cousin Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) running front of house, and the rest of the gang pitching in too. Carmy and company are back in the first trailer for “The Bear” Season 3. (Apparently he didn’t freeze to death in that freezer!)
As the prodigy chef, played by Jeremy Allen White, opens the new restaurant alongside Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), they find themselves once again sparring. In one scene, Carmy yells, “No surprise!” after Richie brings a piñata into the kitchen. Richie responds: “Yes, surprise!”
In a shorter teaser released five days earlier, Sydney tells Carmy and Richie: “This is a dysfunctional kitchen!,” to which they respond in unison: “Show me a functional one!”
All episodes of award-winning FX dramedy are set to release on June 27 and will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. (and Disney+ internationally).

It’s nutty to think just how fast FX’s dysfunctional kitchen drama “The Bear” ascended and how quickly it might just all end. Premiering on Hulu in the summer of 2022, “The Bear” literally seemingly came out of nowhere, wasn’t anticipated or known about, and wasn’t exactly heavily promoted in advance. But critics who got wind of it first knew immediately that the show sizzled with intensity and bruising emotional family baggage. By the end of the summer, when audiences finally had a chance to catch up and binge it all, the series became a bonafide word-of-mouth hit.

June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.
Disney+ will premiere the first new live-action Star Wars since 2023’s middling to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 and “Ahsoka” with “The Acolyte,” starring “Squid Game” breakout Lee Jung-jae. The streamer will also premiere various new options for kids and family-friendly programming, as well as new episodes of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa.
On Hulu, FX comes in hot for the summer, along with an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’s “Queenie,” the brat-pack documentary “Brats,” and yes — more “Love Island.” The TV and film library continues to shift with new and expiring titles,...
