David Benioff and D.B. Weiss turned to the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy to help create their highly anticipated follow-up to Game of Thrones. Exclusive: Heyday Television has acquired adaptation rights to Gillian McAllister’s novel Just Another Missing Person.
After what’s been described as a “highly competitive situation,” British screenwriter Georgia Pritchett will adapt the story for TV. It’s another example of how hot the book-to-tv market is right now, with Heyday’s parent Universal International Studios among the most active in the space.
Heyday founder and Academy Award-nominated producer David Heyman, whose credits include the Harry Potter films, Barbie and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, will executive produce alongside Pritchett, McAllister and Sue Gibbs.
Just Another Missing Person follows Julia, a detective brought in to investigate the high-profile disappearance of a young woman. However, the simple case quickly becomes complicated when a mysterious stranger blackmails Julia into framing a seemingly innocent person for the crime. Julia is forced to choose between getting to the truth of the case,...

Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

“Apples Never Fall” costume designer Allyson B. Fanger said with her job on the Peacock drama is completely based in story, propelling narrative through costuming.
“I love, love working with families because you need to find the common thread of the family and keep it consistent and yet find the individuality within each character,” she said. “That was really easy to do.”
Fanger joined “The Masked Singer” costume designer Steven Lee, “We’re Here” costume designer Marco Morante, “The Morning Show” costume designer Sophie De Rakoff, “Lessons in Chemistry” hair designer Teressa Hill and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” makeup department head Natasha Marcelina in a Makeup, Hair and Costume Design panel for Variety‘s A Night With Artisans. “Masters of the Air” has no shortage of Emmys allure. With a roster of executive producers that includes Emmy winners Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, a highly acclaimed cast, and the fact that it’s a companion series to “Band of Brothers” (2001) and “The Pacific” (2010), which have won a combined 15 Emmys, expectations were high. The Apple TV+ limited series did not disappoint. Among its many strengths is undoubtedly the star-making performance delivered by Nate Mann as Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, the B-17 commander of the 100th bomb group who flew an astounding 52 successful missions, earning 16 decorations and establishing a legacy that continues to this day.
Mann, whose screen credits include supporting roles in two feature films, “Licorice Pizza” (2021) and “Ex-Husbands” (2023), and this year’s Peacock miniseries, “Apples Never Fall,” is a relative newcomer, but you wouldn’t know it by examining his performance in “Masters of the Air.” He...

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

[Warning: The following story contains spoilers about “Apples Never Fall.”]
When Alison Brie read the scripts for “Apples Never Fall,” she knew she had to do the show and read Liane Moriarty‘s book on which it’s based. “It was Amy Delaney. It was love at first sight,” Brie tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above) of her character. “If I’m being totally honest, by the third episode — Amy’s episode and kind of the history of the character and everything she had been through emotionally — and you start to realize every episode was really fleshing out these characters and this family, and nothing was what it seemed or things were what they seemed but much more complicated and detailed. And of course the juicy mystery of it all. I think the mystery of it made me wanna read the book and everything I’m saying about the writing and those episodes made me wanna do the show.

Now that FX has decided to make more episodes of its breakout hit Shōgun, it is changing its Emmy strategy for the James Clavell adaptation.
Deadline has learned that FX will submit the saga — which originally premiered as a limited series — in the drama category. Before, Shōgun would have competed against the likes of Under the Bridge or Apples Never Fall. Now that it’s coming back for subsequent seasons, Shōgun will face off against series like Silo, The Wheel of Time, Fallout and The Morning Show.
Today, FX announced it was renewing the Hiroyuki Sanada saga with a possible intent to squeeze two more seasons out of the global hit. A start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. NBCUniversal is looking to wring more money out of Peacock subscribers, with the streamer set to raise prices this summer — one year after its last fee hike — going into effect for new customers ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
Beginning in mid-July, the price for Peacock Premium (with ads) will increase by $2 to $7.99 per month and Peacock Premium Plus (mostly ad-free) is also going up by $2 to $13.99 per month. Peacock Premium’s annual price will increase from $59.99 to $79.99, while Premium Plus is going from $119.99 to $139.99 per year.
The new prices will be effective starting July 18 for new Peacock customers and for existing subscribers with their next billing date on or after Aug. 17.
The Peacock Premium Plus tier provides ad-free content, the ability to download episodes and live local NBC channels. Due to streaming rights, per NBCU, a “small amount of programming” still contains ads on some Peacock channels, events, and a few shows and movies.

Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.
Bening always has a commanding screen presence and, in truth, she could play most roles in her sleep, such as is the might of her talent. With “Apples Never Fall,” she is afforded...

Peacock added 3 million subscribers in the quarter of its exclusive NFL playoff game, Comcast revealed Thursday as part of its earnings announcement. It now has 34 million subs, up from 31 million at the end of 2023.
Still, Peacock lost $639 million in the quarter. At least that wasn’t as bad as the last one!
Peacock lost $825 million over the final three months of 2023. It lost $704 million in the first quarter of 2023 — so the current loss is technically an improvement from the comparable quarters. It certainly helps when revenue grows, as Peacock’s did, to $1.1 billion in the first quarter of the current year.
Universal Pictures in the first quarter released “Argylle” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” in theaters. The latest in the Jack Black karate-bear movie series has done great: it made $481 million worldwide. “Argylle” didn’t even make $100 million. “Migration” was released at the end of 2023, so a chunk of its...

Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.
Brian Lowry (CNN) stated: “As for the old expression ‘How do you like them apples?,’ in this case, happily, the answer is quite a lot.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) opined: “If the ending to the mystery is predictable, the getting...

TV is positively cluttered with buzzy book adaptations; 2024 alone has given us “Ripley,” “3 Body Problem,” “Under the Bridge,” “Girls on the Bus,” “Apples Never Fall,” “Palm Royale,” and way too many others to really count. Few of these projects arrive to the screen with as much clout — and as high of expectations — as “The Sympathizer,” HBO’s newest limited series. Not only was Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 novel about the queasy half-existence of a North Vietnamese spy burrowed in the South Vietnamese army extremely popular when it hit book stores in 2015, it was also highly acclaimed, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. That’s a lot for any show to live up to.
That said, the show certainly has the pedigree behind the cameras to match the original work. The HBO “Sympathizer” limited series comes from Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, who co-created the series with Don McKellar and directs...

Peacock wants to get nostalgic with some of Bravo’s most famous past titles, including ‘The Rachel Zoe Project,’ ‘Million Dollar Listing’ and more.
The 2023 strikes from Hollywood’s biggest actors and writers’ unions were eminently avoidable, but studios chose to play hardball with union reps and force work stoppages. TV networks and streaming services are just now getting their scripted titles back on screens, but Peacock is pulling a move that might make audiences think the strikes are still going! This month, Peacock will be adding over 15 titles pulled from the pile of unscripted reality shows from Bravo’s past; old fan-favorites like “The Real Housewives of D.C.” and many more are coming to the platform in April.
Newly imported Bravo titles will begin arriving on Peacock on April 15. Sixteen titles have been announced for the rollout, and Peacock pledges that more will be included. Peacock is already home...

The Ides of March were marked this year by a three-way race among high profile filmmakers – Peter Farrelly, Doug Liman and Guy Ritchie – with original streaming film and TV series debuts across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. But the sleeper success story of the week belonged to Netflix’s Lindsay Lohan rom com movie “Irish Wish.”
Ritchie made a splashy debut on March 7 with Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” an eight-episode TV heist drama delivered in the director’s signature style. In its second week, “Gentlemen” had solid hold with a modest 30% decline to 1.3 billion minutes watched during the March 15-21 frame, according to original streaming content ratings calculated by Luminate.

The Series Mania Festival’s top prize for best series went to Rematch, a French-Hungarian drama about the historic match between chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s Deep Blue computer.
The best actress prize went to Annette Bening for her role in Apples Never Fall, the first major TV role up from the five-time Oscar nominee. Kamel El Basha won best actor for the Australian drama House of Gods, in which he played the charismatic head cleric of a big city mosque.
In the Apples Never Fall adaptation, based on the novel by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, Bening plays Joy Delaney, family matriarch and patient wife to the irascible former tennis pro, Stan (Sam Neill). When Joy disappears, the four adult Delaney children are forced to reassess everything they thought they knew about their parents and their family history. It has been a while since “The Queen’s Gambit,” but as proven by “Rematch,” viewers’ love for chess is certainly not diminishing.
The show, dedicated to confrontation between famous chess player Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s supercomputer Deep Blue, was named the winner at Series Mania.
A somewhat lukewarm reception of “Apples Never Fall” didn’t stop Annette Bening from being crowned as best actress. The Peacock offering, also featuring Sam Neill and Alison Brie, is the latest adaptation of “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” scribe Liane Moriarty. Now showing a perfect family who, following its matriarch’s disappearance, needs to face some uncomfortable questions. Including this one: Did their beloved father have something to do with it?
Jury member Berenice Bejo read out a brief message of thanks from Bening who described the series as a “labor of love.”
