Sneak Peek new footage from writer Neil Gaiman's live-action "The Sandman" TV series, adapting DC Comic's 1998 Vertigo title, depicting 'Morpheus' who rules over the world of dreams, streaming on Netflix in 2022:
"...'Dream', aka 'Sandman', 'Morpheus', 'Oneiros', the 'Shaper', the 'Shaper of Form', 'Lord of the Dreaming', the 'Dream King', 'Dream-Sneak' , the 'Cat of Dreams', 'Murphy', 'Kai'ckul' and 'Lord L'Zoril', is the anthropomorphic personification of dreams.
"In the beginning, Morpheus is entrapped by an occult ritual and held prisoner for 70 years. He finally escapes into the modern day, avenging himself upon his captors and rebuilding his kingdom, which has fallen into disrepair in his absence.
"His initial haughty and often cruel manner begins to soften, but the challenge of undoing past sins and changing old ways is an enormous one for a being who has been set in his ways for billions of years, allowing him to become a tragic hero.

The Sandman author Neil Gaiman has famously fought off numerous attempts to adapt his most famous graphic novel series, but in Netflix’s Tudum event, a sneak peek clip and some character art for a few of the most recognizable characters give fans a glimpse of the vision the author finally brought to life along with executive producer David Goyer. The first look at Dream, Death, and Desire illustrate the conceptual personifications that Gaiman became known for even in later works like American Gods.

In this poster, Dream looks out at the viewer with his trademark shadowed brow and spiky hair. Across his face falls the shadow of a raven, a symbol of this incarnation of dreaming. Dream, Death and Desire are all finally coming to Netflix.
Thirty-two years after DC Comics published the first issue of “The Sandman,” Neil Gaiman’s phantasmagoric dive into the world of dreams, Netflix unveiled the first look at its highly anticipated live-action adaptation on Saturday.
Stars Tom Sturridge — who plays Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream, the titular ruler of Dreaming — and Kirby Howell-Baptiste — who plays Death, Dream’s chic and easygoing sister — revealed the first look during Tudum, Netflix’s global virtual fan event.
Executive produced by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and showrunner Allan Heinberg, “The Sandman” is updating Gaiman’s graphic novel by setting it in the present day, rather than in the late 1980s (as Audible’s ongoing audiobook adaptation of “The Sandman” is doing). The story follows Morpheus after he’s escaped 105 years of imprisonment on Earth by occultist Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) who, when attempting to...

Audiences have been waiting years for a proper adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman,” and now we’re one step closer. As part of Netflix’s weekend fan event, “Tudum” — which ostensibly celebrates their programming while doubling as a day-long Netflix news takeover — they’ve released the first footage from the streamer’s upcoming live-action series. You can watch the footage below.
Netflix’s logline for the dark fantasy show reads: “A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, ‘The Sandman’ follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.”

How do you adapt a graphic novel series like Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman"? It's a question that has eluded Hollywood producers and filmmakers for decades — to the point of many declaring the acclaimed comic books to be unadaptable. And for many years, that was true. Until suddenly two years ago, a pair of adaptations of "The Sandman" finally sprung into being: a live-action Netflix series that was finally getting off the ground after years of gestating. And ... an audiobook?

And the trio also revealed that Sandman devotees will find exclusive character posters on the show’s social media accounts, which are now live. Check out the clip below: Netflix describes The Sandman as “a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven.” And Gaiman is excited about the talent cast bringing his characters to screen, especially Baptiste-Howell. “Hundreds of talented...

James McAvoy played the captive Morpheus in his own kind of locked room. In the first part of "The Sandman" audio drama directed by Dirk Maggs and released by Audible, Morpheus — the ancient anthropomorphic personification of dreams — is captured by a group of cultists that hold him captive for 80 years, before he's finally released to return to his decaying domain. And McAvoy performed the part of Morpheus in the first part of "The Sandman," released in July 2020, while in lockdown in his spare bedroom. Okay, he wasn't locked in there per se, but he could probably empathize with Morpheus'...

Neil Gaiman's comic series "The Sandman" is a sprawling epic that combines multiple genres to tell its near-mythical story. The series' many arcs fluctuate between fantasy, drama, horror, and more, all to tell the story of seven beings known as The Endless. In an interview with Collider, executive producer David S. Goyer shared that the series will be a "faithful adaptation" of author Neil Gaiman's source material, and will be just as genre-bending as the comics.
In the interview, Goyer explained that some of the most potentially difficult "Sandman" stories to adapt might end up being the most "genre-bending" episodes.

The series, loosely based on the film, will be written and directed by Assayas and produced by the team behind HBO’s Euphoria: A24, Sam Levinson and Kevin Turen.

The past year and a half has been hard on ever couple, but it was especially hard on the husband and wife in Stephen Daldry’s BBC drama film “Together.” Shot in just 10 days during lockdown this past spring, the film stars UK favorites James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a married couple in crisis, and stuck in their apartment. After premiering earlier this year overseas, the film finally gets a stateside theatrical release from Bleecker Street Films on August 27. Check out the trailer below.
Written by celebrated British screen scribe and playwright Dennis Kelly, the film “is the story of a family, like so many, who found a way to survive — together. This hilarious and heartbreaking story intimately shows two partners forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown,” according to the official synopsis.

Netflix has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Sweet Tooth,” an upcoming fantasy series based on the DC Comics series of the same name. Originally published in 2009, the comic “Sweet Tooth” was written and drawn by Jeff Lemire for DC’s mature-facing imprint Vertigo, which published adult series like “The Sandman,” “Preacher,” and “Watchmen.”
The series was created by filmmaker Jim Mickle, co-creator of SundanceTV’s “Hap and Leonard,” and director of hit genre films such as “Cold in July” and “We Are What We Are.” Mickle serves as executive producer alongside Amanda Burrell, Susan Downey, and Robert Downey Jr.
The fantasy series takes place in a world where an apocalyptic event known as “The Great Crumble” leads to a hybrid breed of babies being born with animal characteristics. Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.

While Neil Gaiman has been one of the most revered writers in the world of comics for decades, his live-action CV has grown in recent years as he fields an increasing number of adaptations of his own works. Interestingly, the author has revealed how an uncredited contribution to director Guillermo del Toro’s 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was his first substantive foray into the world of film and television writing. It’s a contribution that, in retrospect, helped shape the film’s mythology-heavy plot.
In a testimonial that appears in the new documentary, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, centered on the impact of the eponymous Hellboy comic book creator, Gaiman makes the surprising disclosure that he was tapped by del Toro to script the sequel’s animated prologue. With the film having taken as a stylistic divergence from its darkly-toned 2004 predecessor towards a more colorful fairy tale aesthetic, Gaiman...

In what is the first official glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on U.K. film and television production, British Film Institute (BFI) data reveals that film and high-end television production spend exceeded £2.84 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2020, only 21% down on 2019 levels.
BFI boss Ben Roberts tells Variety that the speed with which the industry was able to band together and hammer out guidelines for production allowed the sector to weather the toll of the pandemic, particularly as it allowed the buoyant studio sector to quickly rev up operations. Film and television production has continued through the U.K.’s three national lockdowns, working to pan-industry guidelines that were drawn up in late spring. The BFI led the Screen Sector Taskforce, creating the guidance for Covid-safe productions alongside a host of industry players, including the British Film Commission and producers’ trade org Pact.
