Kevin Costner’s passion for Western projects goes back decades when the actor picked one for his feature directorial debut in 1990. Costner starred, directed, and produced the epic Western film, Dances with Wolves. Costner had the nerves on the first day of the shoot like any debut director and things went a little sideways for the Yellowstone actor.

However, he quickly recovered from the embarrassing moment and saved his face in front of his crew. Dances with Wolves went on to win seven Oscar wins including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner, becoming the first of only four Westerns to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Kevin Costner has had a few chaotic months in the past year. The actor-filmmaker ventured to work on his passion project of over two decades, Horizon: An American Saga. The actor also sparked controversy after his public fallout with Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone producers. Amidst these issues, the actor also went through a divorce.
After nineteen years of marriage, Costner and ex-wife Christine Baumgartner reportedly filed for divorce in 2023. The couple shared two sons and a daughter and dated for six years before tying the knot in 2004. The Dances With Wolves star reportedly went to actor and friend Billy Bob Thornton for support after his heartbreak.

Wow, Kevin Costner‘s ‘Horizon’ may have gotten a standing ovation at the Cannes, but the critics are far from smiling at the ‘Yellowstone’ star’s “passion” project.
The three-hour Western drama is facing heavy criticisms, with one dubbing it the “dullest cinematic vanity project of the century.”
Kevin Costner’s – “Passion” Project Dubbed A Failure Following Cannes Premiere
Major outlets are unleashing their judgements on Kevin Costner’s 3 hour epic movie ‘Horizon’ and they’re not holding back. This movie is especially significant for Kevin Costner because, not only has he dreamed of making it for over two decades, he actually self-funded the project.
In fact, he leveraged one of his homes to shell out $38 million of the $90 million needed to make ‘Horizon.’
The first chapter is a three-hour long movie that was said to set the stage for the follow-up in the most sluggish and boring of ways.

Kevin Costner’s upcoming film and his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga enjoyed a promising debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The audience’s enthusiastic response, including a seven-minute standing ovation, moved the director to tears, as he thanked the audience and promised a similar epic journey with the upcoming three sequels of the film series.

However, the same response is not reflected in the film’s critical reception, as the epic western saga opened to a disappointing 30% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics sharing their mixed reaction to Costner’s passion project, for which the actor has risked it all.

The past year and a half has been one big neverending drama for the Yellowstone community. Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner’s back-and-forth has already lasted far longer than it should have, and it’s hard to deny the devastating effect it had on the iconic show — but apparently, there’s more to unpack between the showrunner and his former lead star.

Taylor Sheridan has become one of the most sought-after writers in the industry after he created shows such as Yellowstone and Tulsa King. The former actor who shot to fame as a writer for Sicario has been feuding with his star Kevin Costner for the past few months as the actor worked on his magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga.
While Yellowstone gears up for its final season Costner’s Horizon seems to have hit it big at the Cannes Film Festival after its premiere received a standing ovation. During a post-screening interview, Costner indicated that Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spinoff 1883 may have borrowed elements from his own film as he had shared the script with Sheridan.

Kevin Costner, the guest on this year’s Cannes Film Festival live episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most admired actors and filmmakers of his time, and has been for some 40 years, with credits to his name including The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, JFK, The Bodyguard, Hatfiels & McCoys and Yellowstone.
This week, the two-time Oscar winner, 69, came to Cannes to premiere the first installment of what is arguably his most ambitious project yet: Horizon, a four-film Western epic that he co-wrote, produced, directed, stars in and largely self-financed — indeed, he contributed $38 million of the $100 million total budget. Clint Eastwood is one of the leading pioneers of actors and filmmakers who popularized the Western genre and elevated it during his prime. The actor’s collaborations with Sergio Leone on the Dollars trilogy changed Westerns forever. Eastwood carried on the legacy of those who came before him and elevated the genre by taking it into unexplored territory with many of his Westerns.

While Sheridan certainly took inspiration from Eastwood, he did not want to copy one trait of his films.

Talking to Kevin Costner after the Cannes premiere of “Horizon: An American Saga,” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson asked the filmmaker if he thought he could improve on Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone.” Costner starred as John Dutton for five seasons; he is unmentioned in the press release for the sixth, which just began production.
“No, of course not,” he said.
However, Costner noted, it could be the other way around: During the second season of “Yellowstone” in 2019, he said, Sheridan was looking for writers. He and Baird sent him the “Horizon” script. Thompson noted that both “1883” and “Horizon” share a wagon train story.
“So I don’t know if there’s any duplications there,” Costner said. “Whether he borrowed something, only he’d have to admit to.” (Reps for Sheridan did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Vague accusations of “borrowing” aren’t new to “Yellowstone.” It’s a popular topic on fan sites,...

Kevin Costner was at the top of his career back in 1992, having climbed the ladder of success with his critically acclaimed Dances with Wolves. Meanwhile, pop star Whitney Houston was busy making her way to the top with her magical voice and electric personality. And in true Hollywood fashion, despite orbiting in their own spheres, Costner and Whitney came together in the 1990s to create an iconic masterpiece that still resonates with the audience, The Bodyguard.

Throughout his entire career, Kevin Costner has starred in multiple award-winning projects, a majority of which have earned tremendous acclaim, like Yellowstone. But one of his works met with such extraordinary heights of success that all his other pieces are yet to surpass. This project is none other than his Western masterpiece directorial debut movie from 1990, Dances with Wolves.

Kevin Costner arrived at the Cannes Film Festival surrounded by his children on Sunday night for the premiere of his new film Horizon: An American Saga. The appearance marked a rare reunion of the entire Costner family on the international stage, showcasing the close-knit bonds that have defined this Hollywood dynasty.
The Costner family looked elegant together as they walked the red carpet. Kevin, known for iconic movies like Dances with Wolves and Field of Dreams, led the way with his engaging presence.
His daughters Lily, Grace Avery and Annie looked beautiful in their dresses, and his sons Cayden Wyatt and Hayes looked dashing in their suits.
The family reunion on the French Riviera showed how close the Costners are, even though Kevin divorced his wife, Nicole Baumgartner, last year in an acrimonious divorce. He has worked hard to maintain strong bonds with all his children from his previous marriages.

Kevin Costner saddled up to the Campari Lounge at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday for a 75-minute conversation about his life and career that was funny, revealing and even tear-jerking.
It was all part of The Hollywood Reporter executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg’s annual taping at Cannes of his Awards Chatter podcast, and took place just hours before Costner unveiled his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, at the festival.
During the lively conversation, Costner seemed energized by the crowd, at times standing up and wandering toward them, or facing the picturesque view of the Croisette and pretending to have a conversation with himself (or a wise adviser) wherein he’d interrogate his decisions, like spending his own money on his movies.

Scale, sweep, or schadenfreude; whatever you might be seeking in the films of Kevin Costner, you tend to walk away with the vistas. Think of the golden plains and stampeding buffalo of his directorial debut Dances with Wolves; or the jaw-dropping aerial shot of scavengers circling the atoll in Waterworld; and lest we forget The Postman, a work even the most harebrained viewers haven’t found the energy to reappraise, which still left you with an image of The Sound of Music projected onto a quarry wall, not to mention that statue of himself constructed for the film’s whacky finale. For better or worse, they aren’t easily forgotten.

Kevin Costner’s new Western epic may have gotten a 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes, but once critics got back from festival screenings to their hotel rooms, they posted reviews for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 that were far less enthusiastic.
Horizon is the first film in writer-director-star Costner’s massive four-picture gamble that he famously leveraged one of his homes to help finance (spending $38 million out of pocket for the $90 million-budgeted film). Chapter 1 is three hours and is largely focused on setting the stage — introducing a sprawling ensemble of characters, with the promise of more dramatic events to come in the remaining films.
There are not a large number of reviews for the post-Civil War Western tale so far, but some of the early critiques are pretty harsh. The most common complaint is the film doesn’t feel like cinema so much as a trio of back-to-back episodes of a new TV series,...

Kevin Costner first conceived of the multi-part story that would become “Horizon: An American Saga” back in 1988. Even after two films completed, he’s still got a way to go to finish it.
Part one of the “Manifest Destiny” epic premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. Costner, the winner of two Oscars (for directing and producing “Dances With Wolves”) and one Emmy (an Outstanding Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Movie nod for “Hatfields & McCoys”), knew he had to saddle up and come to the south of France. The frequently taciturn 69-year-old has given multiple interviews, in which he’s made it evident how much the partially self-funded project means to him.
At a press conference, he explained that he was three days into production on “Chapter 3” before he shut the company down to engage in promotion full-time. “It was so important to me to come...

We have already reported on the endeavors – some successful, some not (yet) – of the filmmakers in Cannes to find distributors (e.g. Megalopolis or The Monkey), and we are now going to discuss yet another story from the film festival, related to a movie we have already reported on.
Kevin Costner is one of the most recognizable names in the movie industry, and while has starred in numerous movies, including The Untouchables, Jkf, The Bodyguard, and others, the filmmaker really likes the Western genre. Kevin Costner defended his depiction of the old West in his latest film, particularly the portrayal of Native American, Black and Asian characters, saying he “is absolutely conscious of what’s at stake” when it comes to representation.
Speaking at the Cannes film festival after Sunday night’s world premiere of Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1, the first of a planned four-part Western epic, Costner said he aimed to show Native and minority characters in the film as “well-rounded people” much in the same way as he did with Dances With Wolves more than three decades ago.
“I can’t fill every box every time I try to make a movie. But I’m absolutely conscious of what’s at stake,” said Costner. “The Chinese [for example] are a very important part [of American frontier history], as were African Americans obviously, who also began to populate the West. So they’re important to me.”

Arriving in the middle of the art smorgasbord that’s the Cannes Film Festival, a three-hour Western directed by Kevin Costner sounded like it might be just the ticket for a perfect night of counterprogramming: a grandly scaled slice of neo-classical Hollywood. That, after all, describes the other two Westerns Costner has directed (“Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range”), as well as his quirky sci-fi pseudo-Western “The Postman.” There’s no question that “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” Costner’s fourth outing as a director, gives off some of that traditional flavor.
The movie, set in 1859 in territories that sprawl from Wyoming to Kansas, has stately mesa backdrops that look like they’d fit right into Monument Valley. It’s got a rousing 1950s-syle musical score (by John Debney) that lays on the Old West sentimentality even when dire things are happening. And a good portion of the movie is...

For the last two years in a row, one of the major premieres at the Cannes Film Festival has been a mainstream film that works with the trappings and tropes of the Western genre. But there’s not much connection between Martin Scorsese’s Oklahoma-set 1920s period piece “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the hits of last year’s festival, and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga,” which had its premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Sunday evening.
For Scorsese, approaching that location and time period meant thinking hard about what he could bring to a genre that he felt had peaked with directors like John Ford and Howard Hawks in the 1940s and ’50s, and essentially been ended by Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist Western “The Wild Bunch” in the late 1968s.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive it has been Kevin Costner. Okay, well Clint Eastwood too. And that has been true right from the beginning of his career when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985, and he also made an impression as title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Oscar-winning 1990 Best Picture Dances With Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. For the past few seasons he has prominently been involved in a more contemporary take in his hit TV series, Yellowstone. But without question his most ambitious and sprawling swing yet, Horizon: An American Saga, which kicked off...

Kevin Costner rode into Cannes with cowboy swagger, making finger pistols on the red carpet to cheers from the crowd ahead of the premiere for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, a partially self-financed western that is one of the biggest swings of his long career.
Inside the Grand Lumiere Theatre, Costner was greeted with extended applause (including from some guests wearing cowboy hats) before the first public screening of the $90 million-plus budgeted film that is planned as part one of a four-part saga.
Three hours later, as the credits rolled, the crowd delivered a standing ovation that began to taper off at around the four-and-a-half-minute mark, but then continued on for a total of around ten minutes, ending when a tearful Costner took the microphone to speak about his film, which he directed, produced, co-wrote and stars in.

“Horizon: An American Saga,” Kevin Costner’s risk-it-all Western epic, rode into Cannes on Sunday, earning a seven-minute standing ovation.
Costner was visibly emotional as the film received huge applause and chants of “Kevin! Kevin! Kevin!” During his speech, Costner thanked the audience and promised “three more” installments of the “Horizon” franchise, which is already due to get a sequel in August.
“I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak,” Costner said to laughter. “Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — either will my children.”

Kevin Costner has been in the saddle long enough to know the difference between a big-screen feature Western like Dances With Wolves, a miniseries like Hatfields & McCoys or a longform like Yellowstone. All those projects have done well by him and he’s done well by them. His connection to the quintessential Americana genre and the rugged lands it calls home is indubitable. So why is his sprawling new frontier tale, Horizon: An American Saga, such a clumsy slog? It plays like a limited series overhauled as a movie, but more like a hasty rough cut than a release ready for any format.

Actor Wes Studi heard that director Michael Mann was putting together a little bank robbery picture called Heat. According to Wes Studi himself, he proactively called Michael Mann’s office to land the role of Detective Sammy Casals. His passion for the character and project led to his Last of the Mohicans director casting him again in another great role that allowed him to show off some range. This allowed Wes Studi to go beyond the “leather and feathers of period dramas” even though he excels in those too. He stole the show in Best Picture Dances with Wolves and his character didn’t even have a real name, the credits call him “Toughest Pawnee”. And he is probably the only actor who can get away with asking Daniel Day-Lewis to sign his autograph… with his left foot.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer and character posters for New Line Cinema’s Horizon: An American Saga, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Costner. Horizon: An American Saga is a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.
A story of Americana and patriotism too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-wrote the script with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute two films in the saga this summer – the first on June 28, 2024, followed quickly by the second on August 16, 2024. The first film is rated R for violence, some nudity, and sexuality.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.

Kevin Costner’s abrupt exit from Yellowstone brought up his issues with creator Taylor Sheridan. His divorce from Christine Baumgartner also figured into the whole Yellowstone debacle. A similar conflict happened in Costner’s career almost three decades before his ongoing issue. At that time, Costner entered into a heated battle with the director of Waterworld and his close friend, Kevin Reynolds.

Do you think drama just stays on screen in the entertainment industry? Well, no…sometimes, it can seep into the behind-the-scenes operations of some of our favorite shows. Kevin Costner, the celebrated actor known for his roles in films like Dances with Wolves and The Bodyguard, has found himself at the forefront of some recent production troubles with his hit TV series, Yellowstone.

But, in a recent chat with Deadline, the California-born actor, 69, shared his own serialized story as he gets ready to debut the first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga at Cannes.

We've been hearing for years about the death of DVD and Blu-ray. The physical media market is not what it once was, with hardcore collectors driving new business and impressive new 4K releases of classics and new movies aimed at a small but loyal section of consumers. Sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs were down 25% in 2023, even though home entertainment -- driven in large part by VOD -- was up 16.8% to $43 billion. Heck, even Disney is shutting down the Disney Movie Club this year while handing its physical media business to Sony. But the death of DVD has been greatly exaggerated, at least according to Oscar-winning "Dances With Wolves" director Kevin Costner.

Kevin Costner would often like to imagine himself as a one-man army, if possible, who is capable of handling almost every single hurdle and blockade thrown in his direction with utmost precision and decisiveness. What to expect from Cannes 2024? The global selection offers critics plenty to write about — after all, this is the festival d’auteurs. But this year’s edition may be light on the red carpet glitz that lures celebrities to the Côte d’Azur for eye-popping photo memes and offshore yacht revels. Remember Madonna’s 1991 pointy Gaultier bustier? Elizabeth Taylor holding her white dog as “Cliffhanger” star Sylvester Stallone climbed the steps to meet her at the top? Such viral moments are what Cannes director Thierry Fremaux dreams of.
High-octane stars expected to hit the Palais photo gauntlet include two-time Oscar-winner Emma Stone, who stars in all three stories in competition title “Kinds of Kindness” (Searchlight), Yorgos Lanthimos’ edgy follow-up to $100-million grosser “Poor Things.” Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth will add some sizzle for out-of-competition prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.), George Miller’s rollercoaster return after 2015’s Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road.
