We are living in a time when Hollywood is actually making a lot of musical biopics, so it does not surprise us that one of the biggest musical artists of all time, Michael Jackson, will also be the center of an upcoming biopic. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to his story, and the upcoming film Michael is currently set for an April 18, 2025 release. The movie is a gamble due to Jackson being a controversial figure, but from what we can deduce, the executives at Lionsgate have a lot of confidence in the project.
Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate, recently talked to the media and revealed his enthusiasm over the upcoming film, claiming that it will be Lionsgate’s biggest project of all time!
Packer told the media about his confidence in the movie, going as far as to claim that it is the studio’s biggest project ever.

Sean Diddy Combs was at the center of a movie based on his protege Biggie Smalls called Notorious. The feature had Antwone Fisher star Derek Luke portray the music mogul. But initially, Luke declined to play the part.

Luke had some strong reservations against playing Diddy in Notorious. The biopic would follow Bad Boys artist B.I.G. from childhood and on to his ascent to rap superstardom. Luke would become aware of the project way before the film was fully realized. But at the time, Luke was given very little details about what to expect from the feature.
“One of Puff’s guards sent word that they wanted to holla and I was like, ‘Word, okay.’ So I met him, greeted him, nothing to it,” Luke said in an interview with The Breakfast Club.

Exclusive: Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) is the latest addition to Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that Antoine Fuqua is directing for Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International, sources tell Deadline.
The actor will play famed attorney Johnnie Cochran, who repped Jackson in a 1993 child molestation case that was settled out of court. As previously announced, Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson leads the ensemble as Michael, with Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier and Juliano Krue Valdi among others set for key roles.
Scripted by by John Logan, Michael promises to bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became known worldwide as the King of Pop. The film will examine Jackson’s triumphs and tragedies — from his human side, to his public and private struggles, to the accusations and the 24/7 media microscope Jackson lived under, even at his artistic apex. Steven Spielberg is no stranger to tackling dark material like Schindler’s List and War of the Worlds. But when it came to this Denzel Washington feature, he just wasn’t in the right place in life to helm the project.

AT&T and Tribeca have chosen “Color Book” as the winner of the 2023 AT&T Presents: Untold Stories event. Writer/director David Fortune and producer Kiah Clingman competed amongst four other finalists to win $1 million and receive year-round mentorship to produce their feature film.
The film concerns a devoted father learning to raise his son — who has Down Syndrome — following the passing of the family matriarch. While adjusting to their new reality, the duo embark on a journey through Metro Atlanta to attend their first baseball game. The Atlanta-set picture is like Fortune’s prior films in that it finds power in normalizing the themes of compassion and intimacy set in inner-city communities.

In the race to establish a foothold as Hollywood’s No. 4 agency, Gersh is taking private equity cash to fuel expansion in the talent representation space.
Investment firm Crestview Partners has secured a significant stake, 45 percent, in the Beverly Hills-based agency, the companies said on Monday. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the Gersh partnership will retain a majority stake in the agency that was founded in 1949 by rep Phil Gersh and currently run by his sons, David and Bob Gersh.
As part of the deal, members of Crestview will join a newly formed board of directors at the agency, with David and Bob Gersh also joining the board. (The number of seats is to-be-determined, but the Gersh partners have a majority.) Additionally, Leslie Siebert, the senior managing partner who joined the agency in 1984, has been promoted to co-president of Gersh and will join the board.

Benita (Julia Mayorga), the young woman at the center of “Rare Objects,” the third feature directed by Katie Holmes, has been through a transformative trauma. In the film’s opening moments, she’s discharged from a mental ward, where she’s been dealing with Ptsd; a series of charged flashbacks show us what happened to her. In Manhattan, where she was a university student majoring in economics, she was approached at a bar by a seemingly nice guy, who had a drink with her, and when she went to the restroom he attacked her, shoving her inside and sexually assaulting her.
She emerges from this crime a shell of her former self, and Holmes shoots the rape so that we experience how the shock and horror of it could undermine someone’s identity. Benita, out of the hospital, shows up at the home of her doting but quietly stern mother (Saundra Santiago) in Astoria,...

Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.
“If he sent me something, he would say, ‘Do you like it? Alright we’ll get him next time, kiddo, no pressure,’” Luke says. “This was the only script that he said, ‘You need to do this. And I’m like, ‘No. Absolutely not. First of all, Marvel, like, what is that?’”
Limato was firm, so Luke took a meeting with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Upon entering his office, Luke’s eyes were drawn to a section of the wall full of Black characters, ones he didn’t even know existed. Luke leaned in and took the role.

The problems with Rare Objects, Katie Holmes’ limp third directorial feature, aren’t immediately apparent. The film, which the actress also co-wrote and stars in, lures you with the potential of the biographical details revealed in the first scene. Benita, played by Julia Mayorga, sits before an attending doctor (Matthew Lawler) at the unnamed hospital from which she is being discharged. He recounts a mix of mundane and distressing facts: Benita was previously a student at the City University of New York; she had an abortion; and she checked herself into the hospital for Ptsd and anxiety. These notes do not define a life, but they do promise a story far more involving than what Rare Objects ultimately offers.

In Disney+’s latest series, The Crossover, the teenage intricacies of first love, drama, and aspiring stardom reign supreme on and off the court. Based on the critically acclaimed best-selling verse novel by Kwame Alexander, who also serves as the TV adaptation’s creator, EP, co-writer and co-showrunner, the series follows the lives of two teen brothers, Josh (Jalyn Hall) and Jordan Bell (Amir O’Neil) as they navigate life’s many uncertainties from boyhood to manhood. Though primarily focused on the boy’s relationship with basketball, a sport engrained in them at birth thanks to their former professional basketball-playing father (Derek Luke), the series unabashedly tackles serious issues regarding teenage rebellion, self-discovery, disability, and mental health challenges.

Disney+ Hotstar sports drama, “The Crossover” puts a strong emphasis on the concept of the ideal family. The series depicts a sports-freak family where there are no limitations on having ambitions or fulfilling them. The protagonists of “Crossover” are twin brothers Josh “Filthy McNasty” Bell (Jalyn Hall) and Jordan Bell (Amir O’Neil), two aspiring basketball players who come from a family where their father Chuck Bell (Derek Luke) encourages them to regard basketball as their ultimate devotion. Principal Crystal Bell (Sabrina Revelle), their mother, might be a little bit tough at times, but she also encourages her sons to follow their hearts and pursue their dreams. Sadly, life claimed many beloved things from this family, continuously breaking them down, but by rising from the ashes, the Bell Brothers illustrated that everything is possible if there is determination toward one’s goal.

When basketball fans gather to discuss the Greatest of All Time, the debates tend to be comparative. Russell vs. Wilt. Magic vs. Bird. The search for The Next Jordan or The Next Kobe or The Next LeBron.
The Current LeBron is still active in his own portion of the Goat conversation, presumably by virtue of his status as producer on Starz’s Survivor’s Remorse. But the newest TV series from James’ SpringHill company is more likely to evoke comparisons than any direct declarations of greatness. My notes on Disney+’s eight-episode The Crossover are scattered with references to other shows that the family basketball drama brought to mind.
It doesn’t quite achieve the lyrical poeticism of OWN’s David Makes Man or the earnest adolescent sincerity of Freevee’s High School or the proficiently executed basketball rush of Apple TV+’s Swagger or the enticing time-jumping mystery of The WB’s Jack & Bobby.

An adaptation of Kathleen Tessaro's novel, Rare Objects is a story about friendship that centers around a young woman who reclaims her own sense of self through her journey of self discovery that involves a new job, new friends and healing. Starring Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke, Alan Cumming, David Alexander Flinn, and Katie Holmes (who's also currently in Anna Ziegler's new play The Wanderers). This hasn't played at any film festivals, which is a bad sign, because it looks rather tedious despite the good intentions behind telling this story of friends. Is it uplifting or depressing?...

"Darby and the Dead", the supernatural teen comedy feature, directed by Silas Howard, stars Riele Downs as 'Darby Harper', Auli'i Cravalho, Chosen Jacobs, Asher Angel, Wayne Knight, Derek Luke and Tony Danza now streaming on Hulu:
".... 'Darby Harper' and her mother were swept by an ocean wave that drowned them. Darby was brought back to life, but her mother perished.
"Since then, Darby gained the ability to see and communicate with the dead, starting a side hustle to help 'Deados' move on to the afterlife by helping them take care of things they could not do while alive.
"This has caused her to become distant from everyone at school, including her former friend 'Capri Donahue', the popular cheerleader. Meanwhile, Darby's only true friend is the school's former janitor Gary, a 'Stayer' who is waiting for his wife 'Linda' to pass on so that he can move on too..."

Plot: After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri, the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which along the way allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.

In “Darby and the Dead,” the promise of its premise outweighs the delivered product. Director Silas Howard demonstrates his deft capabilities bringing an energetic irreverence and aesthetic buoyancy to the unfurling feature, which is centered on a tormented teen cajoled into helping a recently deceased mean girl get a new life in the afterlife. Unfortunately, despite the film’s undeniable charms and strong lead performances, the fabric it weaves frays as it wears on, undone by clunky character development, trite sentimentality and rushed resolutions.
High schooler Darby Harper (Riele Downs) sees dead people. But unlike Haley Joel Osment’s “Sixth Sense” character, she knows exactly how to help the deceased with their unfinished business. She’s turned it into a full-fledged job, paid only in gratitude, playing spiritual counselor to those she affectionately calls “Deados” who’ve passed away and are stuck in limbo. This special gift was bestowed on...

For a movie about a teen who communicates with ghosts, “Darby and the Dead” is awfully dispiriting. Writer Becca Greene (“Good Vibes”) and director Silas Howard (“Dickinson”) casually kill off Darby Harper’s mother in the first minute, spend most of the movie requiring Darby (Riele Downs) to change her entire personality, and then proceed to punish her for following the path they’ve set.
Though the film seems designed to exploit a new generation’s affection for movies like “Clueless,” “Mean Girls,” “Bring it On” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the filmmakers have missed the messages of those beloved classics altogether. Plus, there’s so much YA streaming content these days that lazily patched-together projects feel, well, extra lazy.
Even Downs, so appealing on Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” can’t fight the forces of this soulless script (which was based on a potentially promising story idea by Wenonah Wilms). As Darby,...

Quentin Tarantino isn’t known for his high-brow tastes. The director made his name by bringing back grindhouse genres. Movies such as Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Kill Bill highlighted the power and beauty of crime, exploitation, and revenge stories without ever diminishing their nastier elements. So one would think that if anyone would have the desire and skill to make an effective superhero movie, it would be Tarantino.
However, that’s not the case. In his book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino admitted that he and other filmmakers “can’t wait for the day” that superhero movies fall out of favor. He elaborated on that point earlier this month in a conversation with the LA Times, explaining that he would never do a Marvel movie because “You have to be a hired hand to do those things, [and] I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”

"I think it's criminally good haunting." 20th Century Studios + Hulu have revealed an official trailer for a teen comedy titled Darby and the Dead, directed by Silas Howard. This is skipping theaters and will drop directly on Hulu in December for anyone to watch at home. This kind of sounds like The Sixth Sense but if it was a teenage girl high school comedy instead. After suffering from a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. “Alone Together” was originally reviewed out of the 2022 Tribeca Festival.
Katie Holmes turns out to be one of the best chroniclers of the Covid-19 lockdown to date: Her sophomore feature as a director, “Alone Together” (which she also wrote), captures many vivid details on the subject overlooked by even documentaries.
But Holmes’ artistic ambitions aren’t lofty, as she seems to have set her sights on Lifetime movie rather than Oscar bait.
The opening scenes are stunning. On March 15, 2020, as news alerts flood the airwaves, June (Holmes) ventures outside her building, on her way to an Airbnb upstate booked by her boyfriend, John (Derek Luke), to wait out the pandemic. She’s been told by her employer it should all blow over in two weeks. (Ha!)

Laure Calamy, who plays Noémie, the wacky assistant to Mathias Barneville in Call My Agent!, won the César (French equivalent of the Oscars) for Best Actress for My Donkey, My Lover & I, the film by Caroline Vignal that opens this weekend Stateside from Greenwich Entertainment. It’s the distributor’s second narrative film in a year and its widest release since The Rescue.
Wide here means 52 screens in 28 markets in the U.S. where the specialty box office can still be pretty punishing, especially for foreign language fare. Greenwich has been releasing about two film a month, mostly documentaries. My Donkey (Antionette Dans Les Cévennes in French) is Calamy’s first starring film role. It has a theatrical window through August 30.

Who’s going to make the first truly great Covid movie? A number of filmmakers have thrown their hats in the ring since the pandemic began in earnest two and a half years ago, but so far the documentaries have outpaced every drama not named “Kimi.” Katie Holmes’ sophomore directorial effort does little to change that.
“Alone Together” — which Holmes also wrote, produced and stars in — takes place in the early days of lockdown, when uncertainty was rising as rapidly as case counts. Holmes stars as June, a New York food critic who flees the city thinking that her boyfriend (Derek Luke) will be joining her Upstate; when his family situation prevents that, she and another man (Jim Sturgess) find themselves alone … together.

People died, businesses closed, and health and science became politicized to a point of no return. But what about the good that Covid accomplished? What about those relationships that needed a global pandemic to provide the next logical progression of conflict resolution on the extensive list John (Derek Luke) and June (Katie Holmes) have to describe all they’ve overcome—definitive proof their one-year love is real and worth saving? Trials (he’s apparently a lawyer), holidays, regular days, and… health crisis? If your union can survive Covid it can survive anything. And, likewise, if it can’t survive Covid, why were you dating in the first place? Luckily for June, those million-plus Americans’ deaths meant something. They sacrificed themselves so she could see the truth: John’s a self-righteous dick.

In an era where the very genre of romantic comedies is at stake, “Alone Together” arrives just in time to fuel a nostalgic formula for the trope of early aughts enemies who become lovers.
Katie Holmes writes, directs, produces, and stars in the quaint rom-com set in 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Holmes plays restaurant critic June who leaves Manhattan after being on hiatus with her boyfriend John (Derek Luke). She retreats to an upstate Airbnb, which is inconveniently double-booked by Charlie, yet another lonely heart, played by Jim Sturgess. Yet a love triangle quickly ensues as John visits the rental and tries to make his fraught relationship survive the quarantine lockdown.
“Alone Together” premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, and also co-stars “Girls” alums Becky Ann Baker and Zosia Mamet, plus Melissa Leo. The film debuts July 22 from Vertical Entertainment.
“Alone Together” marks Holmes’ sophomore directorial project following the 2016 drama “All We Had.

"Do I really want to be with somebody who doesn't want to be with me during a pandemic?" Vertical has revealed the main official trailer for Alone Together, the second feature film directed by actress Katie Holmes. This recently premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival this summer, and will be out to watch this July on VOD and in theaters. Another pandemic Covid-19 lockdown film, with a twist. Two strangers embroiled in bad relationships wind up in the same upstate New York rental home and end up connecting together. Katie Holmes stars as one stranger, and Jim Sturgess as the other - both end up staying there until Holmes' boyfriend John shows up. Derek Luke also co-stars, plus Zosia Mamet and Melissa Leo. This is a better trailer than the teaser, but it still looks like the kind of film everyone is going to ignore. No one wants to revisit pandemic lockdown time right now,...

Don’t let this film fool you:
“Alone Together,” while set in 2020 amid the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, infuses the genre with the comfort of a matching cashmere bralette and cardigan sweater from the late 2010s, per the trend writer-director-producer-star Katie Holmes made famous then.
It’s easy to get lost in the nostalgic parts of “Alone Together,” like the effortlessly picturesque Anthropologie home furnishings and stylish wardrobes of a “woman on the go in the Big Apple.” It’s even easier to get lost in Jim Sturgess and Holmes’ simple yet charming banter. But don’t get too dreamy-eyed for the rom-coms of days past: the film, which premiered at Tribeca 2022, has a jarring reminder that the world is a heartbreaking place, full of death, betrayal, and traumatic loss. So goes our cute and quirky escape.
