Sabrina Carpenter’s “Nonsense” is some of the most unusual pop music in recent memory. Interestingly, it was not Carpenter’s idea of a surefire hit. The “Espresso” singer revealed what was going through her head when she wrote the track and how she felt about the tune’s unexpected popularity.
Sabrina Carpenter worried ‘Nonsense’ would discredit her other songs
In a 2024 Interview Magazine article, Carpenter revealed what was going through her head when she wrote “Nonsense.” “I was at a really, really low point in my life about two years ago, so I was writing very few optimistic love songs,” she said. “That one always stuck out, but I felt like it might discredit some of the songs on the album that were about more sensitive subjects, so it almost didn’t make it in.

Josh Homme hosted an all-star benefit concert in support of his Sweet Stuff Foundation at the Belasco in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Over the course of the evening, he welcomed friends and collaborators to the stage, including Dave Grohl, Beck, St. Vincent, The Kills, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys, Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, Bill Burr, and more.
Not surprisingly, Grohl provided several highlights. He went head to head against Smith in a drum off, and briefly attempted to sing a duet of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” with Homme. Later, after joking that he attempted to learn how to play Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Read” to no avail, he instead debuted an entirely new song he wrote about Homme.

So’s begun the march to 2024’s first major film. Just a week since Janus and Sideshow announced Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast will begin its U.S. run on April 5, its French release, starting today, has brought the director’s soundtrack––latest in the best run of double-duty since John Carpenter. Bonello also being a master of the needledrop, the album features needledrops from The Pointer Sisters and Roy Orbison. Sadly no Visage or Patsy Cline, whose songs are used to incredible effect, but that’s why I made a Spotify playlist all the way back in September, since which time The Beast has stayed rattling somewhere in my mind.

Elvis Presley is known as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, but his influence on country music is profound. Patty Loveless discussed how Elvis inspired her to make an album her brother and sister would have loved. Interestingly, the one single from the album is a cover of a George Jones classic.
Why Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and others inspired a Patty Loveless album
In 2008, Loveless released an album called Sleepless Nights, which refers to itself as a “Traditional Country” album on its cover. During a 2008 interview with CMT, Loveless said the album was inspired by the musicians her older siblings, Roger and Dottie, played to her as a child.
“They would play those old records of Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Connie Smith, Ray Price, Jim Reeves, and George Jones, of course, and Elvis and everybody else,” Loveless recalled. “At a very early age, I was exposed to that music...

Elvis Presley inspired more country songs than you can shake a pair of blue suede shoes at. One of the more famous ones is Patty Loveless’ “I Try to Think About Elvis.” The track was initially more masculine. Here’s why it got changed.
Patty Loveless’ ‘I Try to Think About Elvis’ was originally about handguns and red meat
While Loveless brought “I Try to Think About Elvis” to life with her vocals, she had nothing to do with its writing. “I Try to Think About Elvis” was written by Gary Burr. Burr is also known for writing country classics like Juice Newton’s “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me” and Tim McGraw’s “Can’t Be Really Gone.”
During a 1995 interview with American Songwriter, Burr discussed how “I Try to Think About Elvis” evolved. “I had to rewrite ‘Elvis’ because it was a very testosterone-driven song,...

A new documentary aims to add depth to the story of the singer-songwriter who was often just referred to as the wife of Johnny Cash
Crazy was most famously sung by Patsy Cline but written by Willie Nelson. I Will Always Love You was most famously sung by Whitney Houston but written by Dolly Parton. Ring of Fire, a love song reeking of sulphur and damnation, took off when Johnny Cash sang it on his 1963 album Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.
But it was written by his wife, June Carter Cash, a singer, songwriter, musician, actor and author who spent much of her career in his shadow. “I feel aggrieved on her behalf,” says Kristen Vaurio, 46, director of a new documentary, June, which shines a light on one of music’s hidden figures.

At the close of a particularly fraught year for Hollywood screenwriters, Monday saw the release of the annual Black List – a ranking of the top unproduced scripts in show business.
Voted on by nearly 400 creative executives, this year’s favorite project that has yet to receive a greenlight is “Bad Boy” by Travis Braun, described simply as the tale of a rescue dog who suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer. C2 Motion Picture Group is financing the project and meeting with potential distribution partners imminently.
The list includes 76 titles and covers wide narrative ground. Kirill Baru and Eric Zimmerman’s “The Great Pretender” is the story of America’s sweetheart Tom Hanks getting kidnapped, and the doppelgänger who must step in to save him. Hunter Toro’s “Boy Falls From Sky” tells of an anxious playwright whose world is turned upside down by lies and bone-crushing accidents...

The Black List announced the top unproduced screenplays of the year on Monday, December 11.
The “most liked” scripts include 76 feature screenplays by 80 writers, selected by more than 375 film executives. In the 19th edition of the annual list, the topics range from a Tom Hanks meta satire to a time-traveling couple who try to fall out of love. The making of ill-fated Broadway production “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” a Patsy Cline biopic, and the true story behind the feud between Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller are also among the selected scripts.
After Todd Haynes helmed The Black List alum Samy Burch’s “May December” script, leading to multiple Golden Globe nominations, this year’s crop of best scripts is all the more essential following the writers strike.

It’s less a question if Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast is a major mark on 2023 and more an issue of whether or not I’ll ever, even at a microscopic level, manage to stop thinking about it. I’ve seen the film twice and found each outing equal-parts frustrating and beguiling until it was finally enlivening, marked by one or two flashes of something like honest-to-God Stendhal syndrome, then descending into stretches of full-bore terror––its climax leaving me to ask how many modern filmmakers push images and montage to Bonello’s own limits––before going out with perhaps the most petrifying ending since (and I’d guess in direct homage to) the third season of Twin Peaks. This is to say I think it’s a good film and you should see it.

During a 2015 interview with Goldmine, Ringo was asked if he wore out any of his records as a child. “You know, as a kid, I didn’t really wear out any records,” he recalled. “I did buy The Four Aces’ ‘Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing.’ I mean, that’s a memory I have of early days.” Ringo covered “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” for his debut solo album, Sentimental Journey. The record features covers of many pre-rock ‘n’ roll musical standards.
However, Ringo wasn’t only interested in the musical stylings of The Four Aces.

So what’s one of the biggest complaints about modern movies (aside from pricey concession snacks)? Much of the grumbling concerns the many sequels to successful films, often leading to a franchise. Last week we had The Marvels and there’s another Trolls romp bouncing into the multiplex this weekend. In a bit of convoluted logic, many studio execs may think, “If you’re sick of sequels, how about a prequel, instead?”. Yes, it’s semantics but it’s a way of bringing in fans of the original while not having to pay the big salaries of those older pricier casts. Now, we’ve got that “master candy maker” waiting in the wings to spruce his chocolate factory right before Christmas, and for Thanksgiving, we’re going back to that dreary dystopian future of a quartet of flicks we thought had concluded eight years ago. But since the author of...

As evidenced in its title, music plays a big part in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
In the prequel to the original trilogy, “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler portrays Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12 for the 10th annual Hunger Games, who hails from a musical and nomadic people called the Covey. Willie Nelson is now officially a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Just don’t ask him what he has to do with rock & roll. “It’s been a long ride from my first DJ job to being here with y’all,” he said during his acceptance speech. “And as a DJ, I was playing those first songs by Elvis. I remember writers calling that ‘rockabilly’ rather than rock & roll, and I never did pay much attention to categories, and I’m not sure the fans did either.

Some classic rock stars managed to influence nearly every rocker who came after them. One of Elvis Presley’s songs inspired Meat Loaf’s “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.” In fact, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” tune took some of Elvis’ lyrics and made them a lot darker. The song went on to change Meat Loaf’s life.
Meat Loaf’s ‘Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad’ was desperately written as an Elvis Presley tribute
Jim Steinman was a songwriter who wrote big, dramatic power ballads such as Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me.” He also worked on Meat Loaf’s two most famous albums: Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. In an interview on JimSteinman.com, Steinmen discussed the conception of “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.

TikTok's impact on the music industry can't be understated. Many of the biggest hits of the last five years started to gain fans and soar up the Billboard charts thanks to TikTok. One of the first songs to really show off the power of TikTok was Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," which ended up sitting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks in a row and launched Lil Nas X - then a teenager trying to break into the industry - to superstardom. Other songs that got a huge boost from fans on TikTok were Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage," Doja Cat's "Say So," and Benee's "Supalonely," which all became favorites on the app. There are also tons of older songs that got a boost and found new fans on the app, like Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," Taylor Swift's "Love Story," and Patsy Cline's "Crazy.

When you see a documentary about a game-changing pop star, you assume you’re going to get the story of the music, and also a good look at the life, and that there’ll be enough (on both counts) to go around. I was eager to see “Let the Canary Sing,” a documentary portrait of Cyndi Lauper, because it’s directed by Alison Ellwood, who made “The Go-Go’s” a few years back, and that movie had everything: the drama, the trauma, the saga of a total pop-music reset, as we watched the Go-Go’s bust down doors that had been too tightly shut for too long. Cyndi Lauper was no less revolutionary a figure, arriving in the early ’80s, along with Madonna, to announce that we were in the midst of a seismic new definition of what it meant to be a female pop star. The definition was: a star...

After 23 seasons in a red swivel chair, The Voice’s Blake Shelton took a load off Monday night to watch his last bunch of finale performances as a coach. He was sitting pretty, too, considering that the members his team, whittled down to just showman Noivas and country singer Grace West, were the likeliest to win the title. Every couple of months, at a venue somewhere in Michigan – the Old Town Playhouse in Traverse City, say, or the State Theater in Bay City, the singer Judy Harrison will head backstage to her dressing room, and begin her transformation.
She fixes her make-up. She puts on a black fringed top, a black skirt, big belt and cowboy boots. Over her own long, light hair, she places the short, black wig she bought from a professional wig store in town, and runs her fingers through its faint waves.
“The wig is truly the thing that takes you there,” Harrison says via video call. “The very first time I did this, I walked out with the wig on, and I don’t know if the band knew who I was. I was so different to them, it was like they weren’t even looking at Judy.”

Thanks to the example set by her, country music is a different business for women because of Loretta Lynn, according to artists like Brandi Carlile. While reflecting on Lynn’s legacy, Carlile noted that some of her friends in the industry seemingly paid it forward to her from the kindness they’d received from the icon. And she wanted to share her gratitude for that.

These days everything and everyone is “iconic.” But here, at the center of five rich and unrushed episodes, is the real deal. As he approaches his 90th birthday, the composer of such immortal numbers as “Crazy,” “Night Life” and “On the Road Again” is still writing songs, still playing to concert crowds. Delving into the incomparable songbook, directors Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman show how Willie Nelson broke the country mold and transcended genre boxes, again and again. Their authorized biography — the musician’s wife and his manager are executive producers — is a love letter, to be sure, and like Nelson himself it doesn’t dwell on negativity, but there’s nothing simplistic or naive about it. Willie Nelson & Family is a portrait of a man who has made music and lived life on his own terms, in good times and bad.

When Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in late May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was punctuated by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar — and the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, for that matter — was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the third choice in Gold Derby’s combined Best Actor odds at 9/2, trailing top pick Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” at 69/20 and Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin” at 4/1.
So what does Oscar history tell us about his chances of getting nominated for “Elvis”? When it comes to Butler, he will be looking to follow in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends. And he surely delivers an incandescent performance as Elvis Aron Presley.

Creedence Clearwater Revival released their debut album in 1968, running through the jungle of evolving radio with a steady barrage of hits until their breakup in 1972. But the quartet had been jamming since meeting in middle school in 1959 in El Cerrito, California. On April 22, 2017, Loretta Lynn took the stage at the Tarrytown Music Hall, a small theater outside New York City. Lynn, who died on Tuesday at the age of 90, had celebrated her 85th birthday a week earlier with a triumphant two-night run at the Ryman Auditorium, but this was a low-profile gig — just Lynn and her band playing to 800 or so fans.
That made no difference to Lynn. With help from her daughter Patsy Lynn Russell, sisters Crystal Gale and Peggy Sue, and her six-piece backing band, Lynn delivered an electrifying 90-minute set.
