Across his career, Tom Cruise has made many all-time-great movies – from his early character drama work in A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire, to the high-flying Top Gun and its sequel Maverick, to… well, every Mission: Impossible movie. But in recent years, there’s been another Cruise movie that’s stood particularly tall – Edge Of Tomorrow, the alien-attack time-loop movie that sees Cruise get splattered again and again while trying to figure out how to beat the marauding ‘Mimics’ intent on taking over Earth. The film, directed by Doug Liman and co-starring Emily Blunt, sadly didn’t set the box office alight on release, but picked up a major following as a top-tier Cruise movie – and the star clearly agrees.
On social media, Cruise shared a thread celebrating 10 years since Edge Of Tomorrow hit the big screen – celebrating the movie, and shouting out his collaborators. “I want to take...

Lake George co-stars Carrie Coon and Shea Whigham are actors’ actors. They’re highly regarded by their peers, and they elevate every project they’re a part of, whether it’s an indie, a blockbuster or a prestigious cable series. When Doug Liman's sci-fi actioner "Edge of Tomorrow" was released in 2014, it opened to a mere $28.7 million at the domestic box office. This was considered a minor scandal at the time, as the film was roundly praised by critics for its slick wartime combat sequences, clever time-loop premise, and charismatic leading performances from stars Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise. Many also saw "Edge of Tomorrow" as an antidote to the ascendant tide of Marvel movies that had, by then, completely infiltrated the cinema marketplace. Recall that 2014 was the year of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Solider," two wildly popular films that, perhaps because of their popularity, invited early invitations of the phrase "Marvel fatigue."
"Edge of Tomorrow" was often touted as proof that great, original films — that is: not driven by marketable I.P. — were still being made. Its paltry opening was held up as...

In 2011, rumors and speculation had been in people’s minds that Jeremy Renner’s inclusion in the Mission: Impossible franchise with Ghost Protocol meant that he was being set up as someone who could be taking over for Tom Cruise in future films. His character, William Brandt, was even cloaked with a suspicious past in the film. Brandt ended up not becoming a replacement for Ethan Hunt, but he was a very helpful ally. He would appear again in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation as an important factor for Imf that helped deal with the political red-tape of their organization. So, where was Brandt in Mission: Impossible – Fallout?

Tom Cruise looks like he’s picked a remake of The Gauntlet as his first project once he’s finished Mission: Impossible 8.
Following the eventual completion of the next Mission: Impossible film, we’d imagine both Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie will want to take a nice, long holiday. After that, though? It looks like they’ll be reuniting for a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood thriller, The Gauntlet.
News of the project first leaked in April and seemed to confirm earlier hints McQuarrie had dropped about their next collaboration. Having previously described their next project as “gnarlier” than the Mission: Impossible films, McQuarrie also added that “It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse.

Fortunately, the Anyone but You star was eventually onboard with the role, which led to the actor’s ascend in Hollywood, who is currently one of the biggest bankable young stars on the planet.
However, things might not have been the same if Powell hadn’t instilled some changes in his Top Gun 2 counterpart, which was initially written to be a flat character that served no purpose.

Could Jeremy Renner’s “Mission: Impossible” character William Brandt be back in action?
In a new interview with Collider, Renner — who starred in 2011’s “Ghost Protocol” and 2015’s “Rogue Nation” alongside franchise star Tom Cruise — reflected on his decision to leave the franchise and hinted that he would be open to returning.
“I was supposed to do more with them,” Renner said of the “Mission: Impossible” cast. “I love those guys. I love Tom so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.”
However, now that nearly 10 years have passed, Renner said he would “jump” at the chance to reprise the role of Brandt.

Glen Powell is arguably one of the most bankable young actors in Hollywood right now, who isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon. Since rising to stardom after playing Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell has continued to spread his acting chops across various genres, which includes the rom-com Anyone but You, which became a smash hit.
Recently, the actor also joined forces with a former commanding officer of The Blue Angels to make a documentary following his love for aviation. But despite his career’s immense growth in the last few years, Powell is no stranger to setbacks, as after starring in one of the biggest movies of 2022, the actor missed out on one of the biggest hits of 2023.

We were first introduced to William Brandt in 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Played by Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, it was widely reported when he was cast that the actor was being eyed to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise.
The Bourne Legacy's poor performance the following year is rumoured to have led to those plans being scrapped, as did Cruise deciding he wanted to stick around as Ethan Hunt after all.
Renner did, however, return for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, only to have disappeared by the time Fallout rolled around (it was briefly mentioned that the character "retired").
Talking to Collider (via ActioNewz.com) about Mayor of Kingstown season 3, Renner elaborated on his departure from the Mission: Impossible franchise, and it sounds like he was the one who chose to walk away from the popular action franchise.

Jeremy Renner, who played William Brandt in the Mission Impossible franchise, has been missing from the last two instalments. Reflecting on his past contributions to the franchise in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, Renner reminisces fondly about his experiences working alongside the star-studded cast. He attributed his departure from the series to the demanding filming schedules conflicting with his familial responsibilities as a parent. Mission: Impossible 8's Budget Continues To Spiral Out Of Control After A Submarine Stunt Goes Wrong
Update: We've since heard that the report from The Mirror may be incorrect. Original story follows:
Plans once called for Mission: Impossible 8 to be shot back-to-back with Dead Reckoning - Part 1; however, the eighth instalment was also originally titled Dead Reckoning - Part 2, only for that to change when the first half underperformed at the box office.
The sequel has since suffered a series of setbacks. Shooting began in March 2022 and was halted last July as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Work resumed this March and, right now, the idea is for Mission: Impossible 8 to be released next May.
However, according to a new report from The Mirror (via ActioNewz.com), the movie has been hit by further delays courtesy of...a malfunction with a submarine set that's cost the production a whopping $23 million.
According to the site, "Sources say the gimbal, which is used to lower the 120ft-high structure,...

With new chapters in the worlds of Mad Max and Planet of the Apes out now, Guardian writers have picked their favourite big screen franchises to date
When a blockbuster franchise is seven movies in (and counting), and the consensus choice for worst entry was directed by John Woo, arguably the most influential action film-maker of his time, you’re looking at an uncommonly consistent series. Though the Mission: Impossible movies have cycled through many directors – one apiece for Brian De Palma, Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird, before settling on Christopher McQuarrie – the first film, particularly the astounding Langley break-in sequence, established the franchise as a showcase for impeccable crafted set pieces. The plots may be an enjoyably hokey tangle of global threats and clever unmaskings, but the series’ determination to keep topping itself, leaning on the physicality of stunt work and practical effects, has provided reliable thrills for approaching three decades.

Hannah Waddingham has made quite a name for herself since playing Septa Unella, aka the Shame Nun, in the fifth season of Game of Thrones. Despite having little dialogue, the actress made her acting prowess known by commanding the screen, and later went on to secure two Emmy wins for her performance as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso.
Moreover, her success hasn’t been limited to the small screen, as Waddingham recently appeared in The Fall Guy, and is now looking forward to making her Mission: Impossible debut. But despite being in top demand in Hollywood in recent years, her introduction to showbiz wasn’t pretty, as the actress recalled being shunned by many before making it big.

Taylor Sheridan is one of the best screenwriter-director of current times. While he might be known best now for creating the epic Western Yellowstone and several of its spin-off series, he also wrote the critically acclaimed Sicario. The action thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve, is considered one of the best movies of the genre.

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

[This story contains spoilers for The Fall Guy.]
After the many industry-wide challenges of the last four years, The Fall Guy screenwriter Drew Pearce just wanted to make a feel-good Friday night movie, and based on various metrics, the consensus among critics and audiences is that he and the rest of his collaborators succeeded. In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

Ever since the dawn of cinema, stunts have been at the heart of the medium. The very first motion picture, Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 reel The Horse In Motion, captured a jockey riding a horse at speed — cinema’s first stunt! And ever since then, fearless stunt people have been engaging themselves in the ultimate game of one-upmanship, putting their bodies on the line and minds at work to help make movies soar higher, go faster, hit harder, and be bigger than ever before. Even if the Oscars still aren’t ready to recognise that just yet with a Stunt category, we don’t need an awards ceremony to pay tribute to the crazy folk who do this stuff for real.
To celebrate the stunt community – and mark the release of stunt-tastic action extravaganza The Fall Guy – take a look back over the craziest movie stunts that were actually done for real.

Josh Brolin contradicts previous reports that writer-director Christopher McQuarrie is involved in Sicario 3.
The plans for a third Sicario film seem to change with the wind, or at least change with the rather unstable foundations of film production, given how turbulent the last few years have been for the industry.
We first heard back in summer of 2022 that a third entry in the well-regarded series was on the way. One of the series’ stars, Josh Brolin, was out and about promoting his western/sci-fi TV series, Outer Range, and he had this to say: “It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it”.

Actor Kevin Spacey had been at the peak of his career when he was accused of s*xual assault and was put on trial. Many reports of assault and misconduct came out as part of the Weinstein Effect, which led him to lose out on most of his acting commitments at the time. The actor was also dropped from his long-running Netflix show House of Cards.
Spacey was reportedly cleared of his charges in 2023 and was ready to get back to work again. Christopher McQuarrie is said to be directing a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood thriller The Gauntlet, with Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise circling.
It’s coming up on a couple of years now since Christopher McQuarrie hinted that he and Tom Cruise would continue working together beyond the next two Mission: Impossible films, both of which were yet to be unveiled to the world at that point.
McQuarrie didn’t give too much away at the time, simply telling the Light The Fuse podcast that “it’s kind of under wraps. It has neither a fuse nor a fuselage. Oh that’s not true. It does have some fuselages. It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse.

According to GiantFreakinRobot, Tom Cruise is rumoured to star in a remake of Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet, which Christopher McQuarrie will direct. Other scoopers, such as EmpireCity, have added that Scarlett Johansson will be starring alongside Cruise, which would mark the first time the two actors have worked together.
Nothing has been officially announced, so take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but both Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson have previously stated that they would love to work together. At the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Cruise was certain that it would happen. “Look, I’ve watched her career her whole life,” Cruise said. “She’s enormously talented, very charismatic. It’d be fun. She could do everything. She could do comedy, drama, action, suspense. She’s someone that really draws you in on the screen, on camera. So absolutely, it’s gonna happen.

Tom Cruise’s status as a bonafide action star means most of his roles require a certain boldness from the actor. However, Cruise’s performance in the 2008 satirical comedy film Tropic Thunder is arguably his boldest role precisely because it goes against his star persona. In the film, Cruise plays the role of a goofy studio executive Les Grossman.
