Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

When Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters were interested in remaking A Star is Born in 1974, their first choice for John Howard Norman was Elvis Presley. Reportedly, the King of Rock and Roll was very interested in the role, but someone else held the key to Presley’s participation in the project. Who’s to blame for?
Elvis Presley was ‘hooked’ on the idea of remaking ‘A Star Is Born’
Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters met with Elvis Presley to discuss the project in early 1974. At the time, Presley was performing at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace.
Presley hadn’t made a film since 1969’s Change of Habit. However, he was reportedly looking to return to the movie industry and wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. Therefore, the meaty role of a fading rock star greatly appealed to him.

Dolly Parton has collaborated with many musicians over the years, and she says she often gets along well with them. Some, like Reba McEntire, are lifelong friends and others, like Kenny Rogers, became the subject of tabloid fodder about her love life. One artist with whom Parton sang a duet on her 1976 variety show, Dolly, always had a place in her heart.
Dolly Parton said 1 musician had a hold on her heart
In 1976, Parton welcomed country musician Tom T. Hall on her variety show, Dolly. They each performed a handful of songs and sang duets on “Sneaky Snake” and “I Love.”

The pair also played the same show at the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The venue hosted wrestling afterward, so the sign for the show read “Dolly Parton Tom T. Hall Wrestling.” Parton laughed at the photo of the sign,...

The much-awaited screen adaptation of the video game series Fallout is fast approaching, and Walton Goggins looked hauntingly fantastic in his bounty hunter ensemble sans the nose. The actor is almost unrecognizable in the trailer, all thanks to his makeup team who spent five hours working on his disguise.
Amazon Prime’s Fallout
The Prime Video series will be helmed by Jonathan Nolan and will also feature Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Kyle MacLachlan, among others.
Walton Goggins Revealed The Inspiration Behind The Ghoul’s Look
During his guesting at Late Night with Seth Meyers, actor Walton Goggins described his dramatic transformation for his role as The Ghoul in Fallout. He revealed taking inspiration from Blade star Kris Kristofferson’s character, Abraham Whistler.
“We wanted him to be attractive, you know, we wanted the audience to kind of lean into his look and not be kind of repulsed by it.

After a series of career disappointments, Elvis Presley finally came across a deal that excited him. He received a high-paying offer to perform outside North America, something he had never done despite his massive success. When his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, turned down the deal, Elvis looked deeply shaken.
Elvis seemed horrified after a lucrative deal collapsed
By the mid-1970s, Elvis had suffered a series of career disappointments. The latest was that negotiations for him to appear in A Star Is Born had fallen apart. Elvis wanted the role, but Parker demanded too much money and control; Kris Kristofferson got the part instead. Though Elvis felt disappointed, a new offer buoyed his spirits.
Per the book The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley by Alanna Nash, Saudi billionaires Adnan and Essam Khashoggi offered Elvis $5 million to perform at the Pyramids of Giza. Parker turned...

In 1975, Elvis Presley received an offer to act in the film A Star Is Born alongside Barbra Streisand. The opportunity excited him greatly. He hadn’t been in a movie since 1969’s Change of Habit and was growing bored of his endless schedule of performances. A new film could have reestablished him as an actor. Ultimately, though, when negotiations fell through, Elvis’ friend the singer hadn’t been sure he could pull off the role.
Elvis Presley reportedly didn’t think he would be a good fit in a film
In 1975, Streisand offered Elvis $500,000 and 10% of profits to star as rock star John Norman Howard in A Star Is Born. After the initial meeting with Streisand, Elvis’ friends recalled that he seemed excited about the part. The role was of a rock star whose career was on the decline. “It’ll be a unique show where I’m going to engage. There’s some funny stuff. There’s some stuff in there I’ve never told,” Church tells Rolling Stone. “Fans can leave there going, ‘I’m getting to hear something that nobody else outside of this room is ever going to get to hear.

Elvis Presley didn’t sing too many protest songs, but one of his ballads was written by one of the most important protest singers of the 1960s: Buffy Saint-Marie. Elvis wasn’t the only artist to record the song. The tune changed its writer’s life.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Until It’s Time for You to Go’ was written by Buffy Saint-Marie
Buffy Saint-Marie is a singer and songwriter who was part of a huge wave of 1960s folk musicians who wrote about social issues. Some of her most famous folk tunes include “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone,” “Universal Soldier,” and “Codine.” She also penned some popular love songs, including “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman and “Until It’s Time for You to Go.”
During a 2022 interview with Original Cin, Saint-Marie revealed her opinion of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “I mean, I was a huge Elvis fan,...

The term “literary” tends to be invoked to describe films with a grand narrative sweep, featuring a sizable cast and beholden to a dialogue-heavy script. A more holistic definition, though, might be one that highlights how the elements that make up a movie operate in such perfect harmony that they seem to flow from the same pen. On those terms, John Sayles’s Lone Star is among the most literary films ever made. Ostensibly a murder mystery set in a Texas border town, the 1996 neo-western blossoms into something far more complex: a reckoning with personal and historical skeletons that, true to the setting, are left exposed under harsh sunlight even as people struggle to hide them in the faintest sliver of shade.
The story sets into motion with the discovery of a skeleton belonging to Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson), Frontera’s racist, corrupt sheriff during the 1960s, who ruled the...

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

There’s a reason the word honors is in the title. To help celebrate the lifetime contributions of artists in music, dance, theater, opera, movies and TV, the Kennedy Center Honors routinely pay tribute to its recipients by rewarding them with memorable performances.
Scores of artists have been feted since the Honors got their start in 1978, but there are certain tributes that remain sketched in our hearts forever. In anticipation of the 46th annual event honoring Billy Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick on Dec. 27, we look back at some of the show’s most unforgettable performances — starting with Lenny Bernstein’s opening speech from the very first Kennedy Center Honors, of course.

One can't say much to defend the clunky script or the bad casting decisions for Tim Burton's 2001 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes." Not only did Burton's film alter the story of the original novel into something far less poignant, but Mark Wahlberg didn't project the "square-jawed space hero" archetype that his character was clearly written as. Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson also didn't fare well as put-upon wilderness dwellers, coming across as dainty weekend warriors who had never been camping before.
Where Burton's film excels, however, is the ape design. The makeup effects by Rick Baker are some of the best in cinema history, looking eerily natural on the faces of previously recognizable actors. Additionally, the ape cast went through extensive movement training and their chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan body movements are impressive and convincing.
The ape cast also did its job with aplomb.

Christmas just isn’t the same without Arnold Schwarzenegger – and we’re not just talking about holiday classic Jingle All the Way. Arnold has gotten into the Christmas spirit in a big way yet again this year, giving out presents at a youth center in Los Angeles, something he has been doing for over three decades. And he has a pretty sincere reason for doing so.
As he wrote on TikTok, “There is a reason I have been handing out presents at the Hollenback Center in Boyle Heights for over 30 years. When I first came to America, my friends at Gold’s Gym were so generous. They brought me in during Christmas time and made me feel so happy and included. I love being able to give back and see the smiles on the kids’ faces when they get their gifts. Merry Christmas to all!” The caption accompanied a video of Arnold handing out Christmas gifts,...

Plot: Behind the scenes of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
Review: Young people today have no idea how hard it was to see the Star Wars Holiday Special in the days before the internet. I remember only being aware of the Holiday Special in the mid-nineties thanks to the occasional mention in Starlog or Sci-Fi Universe. In about 1996, some friends and I attended a Star Wars Convention in Montreal, and the big attraction was that they would be screening the Holiday Special in full on someone’s bootleg tape. My pals and I were so excited, but after all the years of reading about it and dreaming of what it could be like, we walked out after ten minutes. Nine minutes of unsubtitled Wookie was enough to turn us off, and to this day, I don’t think I’ve ever actually sat through the whole thing.

After decades of witnessing cinematic homicide, it’s easy to get desensitized to murder on the big screen – and I’m not just talking about the horror genre. From heroic secret agents who don’t mind getting their hands dirty to hitmen with hearts of gold, we’ve come to accept that main characters will usually come out the other side of a story with a massive body-count. This isn’t exactly a surprise, as violence is one of the oldest and most easily understandable forms of human conflict, and compelling conflict is what fuels good storytelling.
One filmmaker who’s always been fascinated with the dark side of this obsession with violence is David Fincher, a music-video director turned auteur known for his perfectionist streak and stylish filmography. And in 2023, cinephiles were gifted with an unexpected treat when Fincher once again teamed up with Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker...

Why did George Lucas allow the Star Wars Holiday Special to take place? A Disturbance in the Force does a deep dive into the 1978 special watched by millions and then locked away in a vault, never to be screened again.

Its influence on pop culture has only increased over the last two decades and, also, add the fact that it is a part of the Star Wars filmography – and a hidden one at that – only adds to its mystique. Now is finally the time after all these years to get answers about how the Holiday Special happened,” explained co-directors and producers Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak.

The feature-length documentary A Disturbance In The Force delves into the bizarre history of 1978’s ill-advised Star Wars Holiday Special. It’s out next month.
Bea Arthur out of The Golden Girls tending the Cantina bar in Mos Eisley. Stormtroopers disco dancing. Kris Kristofferson dressed up as Han Solo for some reason. Yes, 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special offers up such an array of bizarre, fever dream imagery that it has long since passed into legend.
Initially conceived as a stop-gap to tide fans over during the long wait between 1977’s Star Wars and 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, a mixture of somewhat relaxed quality control and 1970s US television conventions saw the special emerge as a glittery variety show rather than fantastical space opera. Barbra Streisand is getting candid about her relationship with the late Judy Garland in her new memoir, saying their rumored rivalry was nonexistent.
“People were looking for some sort of rivalry between us. And when they couldn’t find anything, they made it up,” Streisand writes in her tell-all book, “My Name Is Barbra,” via an excerpt from People magazine.
The two were often pitted against each other as titans of both the stage and screen, but Streisand says that she found Garland to be “completely generous” when she appeared on her self-titled talk show in 1963.
“We sang a medley of songs, taking turns, and she wasn’t just focused on herself. She watched me and responded to me,” Streisand writes in the excerpt. “She would reach out and brush back a strand of my hair, like a mother. And Judy’s own daughter, Liza Minnelli, says that her mother...

Comic book fans in the late 1990s likely recall the ambitious plan by Artisan Entertainment, a then-rising indie film studio, to make a long series of mid-budget films based on Marvel superheroes. Avi Arad, then the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, had overseen a deal that would allow Artisan to make movies with Black Panther, Thor, Deadpool, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, and Morbius, as well as Power Pack, Longshot, and an irreverent dark comedy about Mort the Dead Teenager. The deal was finalized in 2000. In 2003, however, Artisan was acquired by Lionsgate, effectively ending what would have been the ambitiously planned early-2000s mid-budget version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite how successful Disney's MCU would become a decade later, Marvel was once considered a non-viable source of film revenue. Indeed, while comic book sales were up across the board in the 1990s, Marvel was struggling to make their characters more visible in the marketplace.

Shannon Wilcox, who made her mark on television on Dallas, Buck James, and other series, has died at age 80. Kelli Williams, alum of The Practice and Lie to Me, told The Hollywood Reporter that Wilcox, her mother, died on September 2 in Los Angeles. Born in Ohio and raised in Indiana, Wilcox moved to Paris to become a dancer after college before coming back to the States and starting an acting career in Los Angeles, according to THR. After making her screen debut in a 1976 episode of Starsky & Hutch, Wilcox went on to play guest roles in shows like Hawaii Five-o, Family, and Hart to Hart before studying at the Sundance Institute in 1981. Later, she appeared opposite Dudley Moore and Mary Tyler Moore in the 1982 film Six Weeks and joined Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson in the 1984 film Songwriter. Willie Nelson was welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday.
The 90-year-old music legend was introduced by Dave Matthews, who shared various anecdotes about Nelson’s altruism and weed smoking
Nelson then used his remarks to call on the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame to induct fellow members of his supergroup, The Highwaymen: “Now that Johnny [Cash] and I have been inducted, I want to give a plug for Waylon [Jennings] and Kris [Kristofferson].”
Alongside his son Micah and Lukas and members of his touring band, Nelson performed “Whiskey River” with Don Was and Chris Stapleton; “Crazy” with Sheryl Crow; and “On the Road Again” with Matthews, Crow, and Stapleton.
In an interview with Stephen Colbert ahead of Friday’s induction, Nelson said that when he got the call from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he “thought they had the wrong number.” He also explained that...

Willie Nelson is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday night, but according to his latest interview, when he got the call that he had been voted in, he “thought they had the wrong number.”
That’s what Nelson said on Thursday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (his second appearance on the program this week). Some unfortunate news to report, folks. Burt Young, the legendary character actor who co-starred with JoBlo’s beloved Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, is dead at 83. Deadline was the first to report the news. Young famously played Rocky’s brother-in-law Paulie, Adrian’s (Talia Shire) brother, a wannabe tough guy who stays in Rocky’s corner despite everything. Young was nominated for an Oscar for the original film, and indeed, Paulie was a complex character. In the first film, he’s Adrian’s abusive older brother. By the third film, his mounting insecurity is confronted by the Italian Stallion, leading to him becoming a corner man for his climactic fight with Mr T’s Clubber Lang in Rocky III. He goes on to back him up for his bout with Ivan Drago in IV before giving power of attorney to a crooked lawyer in V, temporarily bankrupting the family, only for...

Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”
Young’s temperamental, jealous but nonetheless loyal and caring Paulie Pennino was Rocky’s best friend — he would defend the Italian Stallion if someone insulted him. But he was a problematic friend who shouts at Adrian during her pregnancy,...

There isn’t another filmmaker quite like Guillermo del Toro.
While he’s been working since 1993, he’s only made 12 films. But each one of those films is so singularly well-crafted and emotionally resonant, that they stand out as being unlike any other films being made today (or really at any other time). Del Toro stuffs these bejeweled treasures, made with clockwork intricacy, full of ghosts and ghouls and phantasmagorical creatures. But they are also populated with human characters who sport actual and psychic scars, made whole or irreparably damaged by their encounter with the unknown. Whether in English or Spanish, with the tiniest budget or the most expansive, del Toro maintains his creative vision through it all.
It’s with this in mind that we look back at his entire filmography, from the least to most mind-altering.

Dang, September is just over a week away. Why are the final weeks of summer always the fastest? I suppose it is time to look ahead to next month's programming from our friends at Arrow. They've got the cure for the end-of-summer blues with a selection of films from the legendary Joe Dante. There are two docs, one each for the equally legendary comic actor Peter Sellers and actor/musician Kris Kristofferson. There are two programs for Japanese icon, Shinya Tsukamoto and American contemoprary Jim Cummings. Speaking of J-Horror you would be foolish to miss out on the 4K restoration of the first Ringu film. And if you're looking to spice things up or make due on a lonely night (waves pointed finger...

By 1998, it was a certainty that the studios had all but given up on superhero movies. After the financial flops that were Steel and Spawn, along with the sheer critical universal panning of Batman & Robin, the prospects for future superhero movies seemed dim. In the nineties it was very difficult for even a Batman movie to get off the ground, with properties like Superman, Iron Man, and Spider-Man stuck in a decade long development purgatory at their respective studios.
But in 1998, New Line Cinema took a shot on what was considered a somewhat “C” level superhero in the form of Blade. Within the Marvel Universe there exists a horror sub-universe where characters like Mephisto, Ghost Rider, Morbius, and Man-Thing roam, and Blade was considered one of their greatest foils and adversaries. Created by Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman, Blade was introduced in 1973 in “The Tomb of Dracula” #10. He was one...

In the 1950s, Elvis Presley had amassed an army of dedicated fans across the globe. Many of his fans never got the opportunity to see him perform live, though. Elvis only ever performed shows in North America; despite fan demand abroad, he never toured internationally. While some have speculated that Elvis’ fear of flying kept him from traveling internationally, this wasn’t the case. The musician’s controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker, kept him from planning international tours.
Elvis Presley never toured internationally
In 1956, Elvis began working with Parker. He helped the singer rise to success, but he put one rather significant limitation on Elvis’ career: he wouldn’t plan international tours.
While he claimed to have been born in West Virginia, Parker was not a legal citizen of The United States. He was born in Breda, a city in the Netherlands, and he worried that if he left to tour with Elvis,...

The texts were ringing like crazy this morning. “Are you in Maui? Are you okay?” Fortunately, yes, just fine. But Maui, the second-biggest Island in Hawaii, continues to fight massive wildfires that started Tuesday and virtually destroyed the classic town of Lahaina (capital of Hawaii at one time) and a tourist mecca.
Flames have reportedly destroyed hundreds of homes and some businesses in a paradise that has long been a favorite getaway — and even home for many entertainment luminaries, including Oprah Winfrey, Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Kris Kristofferson and Jeff Bezos, among many more. Mick Fleetwood not only lives on the island, but has a popular restaurant, Fleetwood’s On Front Street, that was situated right in the path of where the fire was most fierce in picturesque Lahaina, a city described now as looking like a bombed-out war zone.

This story about “The Last Movie Stars” originally appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
As actor-director Ethan Hawke was working on “The Last Movie Stars,” he showed a rough cut of the six-part Max docuseries about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward to his mom. She told him, “Well, you managed to make two of the greatest icons of my life completely human. Though I’m not sure if anybody’s gonna like that.” Although “The Last Movie Stars” is chock-full of clips from Newman and Woodward films, the series beautifully folds in themes of family, betrayal, aging, grief and healing. We spoke with Hawke about his labor of love.

The series is so artful and impressionistic, but it’s also impressive as an act of profile journalism. What was that like for you?

I believe Jeff Bridges is one of the most charming actors of the last 50 years, and I'm not alone. Pauline Kael went one step further by calling Jeff, in an oft-quoted line, "[maybe] the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor who ever lived." I don't know if Kael harbored any sort of attraction toward Bridges, but I can't claim that my appreciation of him is entirely platonic.
He's not only a fine figure of a leading man (with an even finer head of hair), but he also possesses an easy charisma that has bolstered his screen presence from "The Last Picture Show" in 1971 all the way to "The Old Man," his recent Hulu show. If Bridges has ever given a bad performance, please enlighten me because I have yet to find it among his many credits. Instead of any further hagiography, here is a breakdown of Jeff Bridges' best movies.

Growing up in the 80s it was a special time for kids who loved cars. Series like Magnum Pi, Knight Rider, and The A-Team all had an iconic vehicle that was a centerpiece of the series and epitomized the spirit of the show. But perhaps none was as iconic and memorable as the car at the heart of this episode, The General Lee.
The orange painted muscle car was the chariot of Bo and Luke, the two modern day Robin Hoods Aka The Duke Boys. In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten we’re going climb through the window and get behind the wheel of The General as we revisit The Dukes of Hazzard.
The late 70s and early 80s were a massive time in the land of country music. It had become part of the main stream in a major way thanks to films like Urban Cowboy and outlaw musicians like Willie Nelson,...

Johnny Cash was one of Bob Dylan’s earliest supporters. He became a fan of the younger artist from the moment he heard him, and he went out of his way to support Dylan in his career. They performed together, and Cash covered several of Dylan’s songs. Cash said that whenever he listened to the other artist, he felt slightly jealous. He wished he could translate his thoughts into lyrics as Dylan did.

When Cash met Dylan, he felt mutual admiration. Dylan had long been a fan of his work, and Cash used to listen to his albums before and after shows.
“He’s a very quiet, kind person who loves his wife and children very much,” Cash said, per the book Cash on Cash: Interviews and Encounters With Johnny Cash.

This year’s Stagecoach Festival was a love letter to country music’s past and a nod to its wide-open future. While the festival — the genre’s largest, most rollicking reunion that takes place in California’s low desert the week after Coachella — was sparse on guest appearances (no Axl Rose, this time), the level of showmanship and raw talent was high.

“Are there any more real cowboys?” Neil Young sang Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl on a rare evening when he was neither the headliner nor, at age 77, even close to the oldest artist on the bill.
Providing an instant answer, Willie Nelson, wearing a cowboy hat and red-white-and-blue guitar strap, slowly strolled on to the stage on his 90th birthday, bringing the crowd of more than 17,000 to its feet.
Nelson sat in a chair — one of the few onstage concessions he’s made to age — and joined Young for the rest of their 1985 duet, “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?”

With his signature one-liner — “It’s good to be here, it’s good to be anywhere” — Keith Richards emerged onstage at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night to sing with Willie Nelson at the second of the country legend’s two 90th birthday concerts. Together onstage, Richards, 79, and Nelson, 90 plus a day, made their case as the ultimate survivors. They sang about it, too, capping a two-song performance with Billy Joe Shaver’s eternal “Live Forever.”
But first, they revisited “We Had It All,” which they performed back in 2004 at the Wiltern in L.
