The Patient (2022)
Potential unfulfilled
Clever concept; interesting characters; well acted and the story moves in a very steady (if often plodding) pace.
Unfortunately it ultimately takes you nowhere and when it ends it leaves you in that empty space. The series is not unlike a train ride to a vacant lot. All the promise that travel brings and a terminus of less than no interest.
What may have been intended as clever or to give a sense of openness to speculate on the "what next" it reflect on lessons learned, or not learned; really just ends in unsatisfactory creative conceit. Too bad really as it could have been quite memorable. Oh well.
What We Do in the Shadows (2019)
Setting a high bar
Clever concept with an exceptional cast, brilliant and sharp dialogue. Skilled directing to navigate so naturally though such absurd situations. It's so great to see the creative team live up to its reputation and expectorations. They are setting a high bar for the comedy world.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Tries but lacking and falls well short
The Gilded Age is to Downton Abbey what The Hobbit trilogy was to Lord of the Rings. Well intended to draft off the elements that were executed so successfully but unfortunately stumbles at every step. Great cast, poorly used and errantly directed. Interesting setting needless due to weak storylines and clumsy dialog. Even the production value and cinematography lack depth and texture. If Downtown is Masterpiece Theater then Gilded is the Lifetime Network equivalent. Too bad.
Scenes from a Marriage (2021)
Began to hope it would become a murder mystery
Unsympathetic characters. Exhausting dialog angst. I think I actually like each of the actors less now for having watched this - the stink lingers on them like skunk.
The Witcher (2019)
Kill the Bard
Cavill does a man admirable job treading water as Geralt amongst a sea of terrible writing and weak characters. The series degrades with each episode, starting unimpressive in the first episode and becoming downright unwatchable by the 8th. Whew - this series stinks.
