Death on the Nile (2022)
Agatha Would Approve
Lovely scenery, a wonderfully believable Hercule Poirot, and a cast of characters each with a hidden secret makes for a fully satisfying depiction of Dame Christie's masterful murder mystery.
The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
Get Back and Re-edit
Ok it's the Beatles. There is no other group more or better then or since. The 4 rating is for the Fab 4.
All Beatle fans know the end products. What the mystery is, is their unique creative process. The last six minutes of this way too long 7 hour plod had more music crammed in than the first 6 hours. Yes Heather McCartney is a cute little girl. Devoting a draggy episode to a kid being a kid in a music studio was way too much. More song play and practice is what I was hoping for. A few slices of the hours long negotiations would have shortened the drag of this by at least an hour. I mean we all know that making sausage is a bloody business. Doesn't mean we need to or want to see every step of the process. Better editing sorely needed. Narration instead of a sentence super imposed saying this or that. And sorry, x'ing off days on a calendar is just corny and simplistic. The rooftop scene was ok but the 6 plus hours getting there was truly a long and winding road.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Could have been good.
There is a compelling story buried here. Sadly it was not flushed out. The character development is lacking; there is not enough meaningful dialogue to get a sense of the history or interplay between the characters. A chance reference to a disease at the beginning is given a one minute climax at the end. Really rushed ending. Too many loose ends and visuals that don't tie in. Why sharing a cigarette cuts to a scene of horses in a corral? Who knows what that is supposed to allude to? Not a movie I'd recommend.
Cruella (2021)
Devilishly Good!
What a delightful surprise! Disney for adults! The two Emmas are outstanding, the supporting cast is top notch, and the storyline is satisfying from beginning to end. The cherry on top is the absolutely perfect soundtrack. A total winner of a movie. Treat yourself!
Reminiscence (2021)
It's a No from me.
Wow another very promising trailer with a superstar lead that is a total miss. Who doesn't want to see a Hugh Jackman flick? Well this is one you can forget. The plot line had so much potential and went absolutely no where fast. I used to never not finish a movie to the bitter end always believing it would turn the corner and get better. No more. Add another to my growing list of Didn't Finishes.
Malignant (2021)
Couldn't finish it.
This is not my genre but a movie buff insisted I watch with him since it was by the maker of the great classic The Conjuring. 40 minutes into said movie, the movie buff flipped it off and streamed the aforementioned The Conjuring, which I had also not ever seen, remember this is not my pick of genre. Now THAT movie is a 10. And it's really hard to believe the same person made both of these. Bottom line, don't bother with Malignant. Watch or rewatch The Conjuring instead.
News of the World (2020)
Not a typical Tom Hanks
Very disappointed in this western. There seemed to be no real cohesion to the story and it was not easy to feel any sympathy or connection with the little lost blonde Indian child. The 4 is out of respect for Tom Hanks and his otherwise stellar body of work.
