Wine Country (2019)
Best comedy recently
I thought it was great. The experience and talent of these ladies is evident, as the interplay and expression between the characters is stellar. I agree that younger viewers might not appreciate as much, given that most pop culture references are from a non-contemporary era, aswell as the personal struggles etc. It is best relatable to a 40-something viewer. Also, the pace is something that I really liked. It's not too slap-sticky or at an off-the-wall slim pace. The scenes have body, and the overall form is more down-to-earth and realistic than most contemporary American mainstream comedies (CAMS?). Very well done.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
After school special
Were all the members of Queen and everyone in their orbit really that self-centered and angry all the time? There was hardly a joyous moment, as everyone, Mercury's character especially, appeared to be so tightly wound. The overall production has the quality and depth of an after school special. How was this nominated for best picture? A boring puff piece that fails to build empathy or connection with the characters.
Destination Wedding (2018)
TLMAWAF
Tracy Lords tried to make a Woody Allen film. Very successful in terms of wood, as the dialog and delivery was made out of wood.
Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life (2018)
Two Live Crew
I wasn't sure what to expect, and quickly realized how baseless was my hesitation. These are two veteran titans of stage entertainment, who showed how it's really done. That is, not to knock other comedians, but these guys effortlessly generated laughs without rrsorting to cussing, pornographic or otherwise highly lewd commentary. It was very refreshing in that sense, and yet still had edge and challenge. IMO they really lived up to their legendary status.
