Scoob! (2020)
Didn't feel like Scooby Doo
I am a HUGEEEEEEEEEE Scooby Doo fan and this was one of my most anticipated films of the year. I was really upset when they decided to release via VOD, but oh well. This film was fun and enjoyable. Definitely nothing special and it definitely doesn't reinvent Scooby Doo, but I found myself having fun with it. However , this did not seem like a Scooby Doo movie. It felt like they put all our favorite Scooby Doo characters in super hero movie. Before it came out my one knock on the trailer was that I didn't want Blue Falcon to be part of the movie. After watching it, the Blue Falcon and his crew did not do too much in the film and I don't know if they were needed. I did really enjoy the Mystery Gang. However for most of the first half of the movie they were separated. But when they were together it was awesome to watch. Scooby and Shaggy's relationship in the movie was very cute and I thought the writers did a good job with them. The 2nd half of the movie was definitely better than the 1st and it ended well. I would have rather this movie been more Scooby Doo...ish, if you know what I mean. Like I said I am a huge fan, so some of the crowd pleasers that were in the film I really enjoyed. This definitely wasn't as good as I hoped for, but I had a lot of fun with it. This was also my first experience with VOD and it was ok, but I would have preferred to watch this on the big screen. I suggest that you hold off on spending the $20 on Scoob.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Something New
This show is fun and it is something new. Seeing the teenage years of life through the eyes of an Indian-American girl is really neat. Two characters that I think are amazing in this film are Ben Gross and Paxton Yoshida. Throughout the season we get a lot of time with these characters. Devi is head over heels for Paxton and honor roll enemies with Ben Gross. Gross is probably my favorite character in the show and he gets an episode from his point of view and it is definitely my favorite episode from the season. I do have a couple negatives with the show. Her two best friends are actually really annoying. It is the writers fault. They are not to interesting and actually not even in the show as much as you would think. Another negative is Devi's cousin that lives with them; Richa Moorjani. I understand that they needed another character in the household but this one is just blend and she make one outrageous decision that contradicts what she stood for the whole season. This show is very enjoyable when it is focused on Devi's relationships with her mom and the two guys. I also love how they had lots of flashbacks of her dad. That was a great addition. This show is fun and I think everyone should go check it out on Netflix!
High Fidelity (2020)
Zoë Kravitz
This show was supposed to go to Disney Plus but last year it was announced that it would stream on Hulu instead, and I feel like Disney lost a good show. This show is definitely not for kids but I think it would be cool for Disney Plus to have some more mature shows. Kravitz character in this show is coming off a hard breakup and she is finding it hard to get back on the dating scene. She meets new people but she just can't get over her last guy. This is a weird comparison but she reminds me of Adam Sandler's character in "Uncut Gems." She reminds me of him because she makes some decisions that make you want to yell through the screen, and tell her to do the opposite of what she is doing. But of course we cannot do that and we have to watch her live with her choices. She works at the record shop with her two best friends. These two characters are played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes. They are also trying to find themselves. Holmes is also trying to get back to dating, while Randolph is trying make her own music. These two characters are fun supporting cast and when all three of them are together it is great. But Zoë Kravitz is the star. She does an amazing job in this show and we are always pulling for her even though she makes so questionable decisions. I have never seen the film so I can't compare it to that but I really enjoyed this show and can't wait for season 2. Go check it out on Hulu.
Dave (2020)
Lil Dicky is talented!
If you don't know Lil Dicky then you gotta start learning about him. Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino gets so much love for his versatility and I believe Dave Burd aka Lil Dicky is about to be receiving some of that love. If you see his last post on Insta he talks about the process of creating this show. He created and helped write this show and it really is a great show. The comedy is golden, if you have heard Lil Dicky's music then you sort of know his comedic style. It transfers to the show perfectly. Dave is now the most watched Comedy show put out by Fox ever. (Viewers per Episode) But this show is a lot more than just comedy. It will teach you a lot about relationship, friendships and life in general. The side characters are also a lot of fun and bring a lot to the screen. Gata plays Dave's hype man in the show and he delivers some great performances over the season. Taylor Misiak, Andrew Santino, Travis 'Taco' Bennett, and Christine Ko also are great in the show. Lil Dicky has a lot of talent and I am excited to see what he brings to television and music in the future!
Outer Banks (2020)
Starts Greats... Ends Horribly
This Netflix show came out at a good time during the quarantine so it should get a lot of buzz. This is a show definitely targeting young teenagers. The acting is actually pretty solid for a show like this and the characters are very interesting. In the main group of kids we have John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and JJ. These characters were great in this show and worked well together. The first 7 episodes of the season are all about looking for a lost treasure and it is amazing. Like I really loved the first 7 episodes. The last three episodes takes a whole new direction and it is so frustrating. The police start acting like TV cops and they don't even do any investigating. They shut down the whole island and have a man hunt of one mans word. These last 3 episodes are hard to watch and hurt this season so much. Also, does no one on this island have cell phones? Even if they didn't they would have some sort of device they could use over wifi. But this show likes to assume the audience is stupid so they do not explain any of this. This is something that happens in a lot of Netflix shows, they start great and just crumble. But check the season out and lemme know what you thought!
Onward (2020)
Not a Classic, But Still Entertains
For me this was not Pixar at its best, but Pixar does not have to be at their best to create a really good movie. Tom Holland and Chris Pratt play the two elf brothers in this film and they knock it out of the park. Their chemistry with these two characters is magnificent. They are the best part of the film and when the film is not focused on these two characters this is when the film slows down. The adventure these two brothers go on is very exciting. They learn a lot about themselves and each other on this trip and the audience gets to connect with these two characters. Pixar is great at making these worlds that you want to learn more about. This movie is also very very funny. This is thanks to the world the film is set in, and also because of Chris Pratt being Chris Pratt. I feel like this film could have showed us more of this urban fantasy world. This movie also tugs at the emotional part of you just like any other Pixar film will do. One thing this Pixar movie was missing was that one song that you will remember after the film. I would have loved to have one of those moments. But this is one of the better animated movies I have seen in a long time. Probably the best since Toy Story 4. I believe families should flock to this film because it is doing everything right and it teaches a lot while doing so!
Uncut Gems (2019)
Adam Sandler's Best!!
A New York City jeweler finds himself in a hard spot when he owes many different people money that he does not have. Wow... this is Adam Sandler's best movie ever. He plays the role of a jeweler that to be honest, is a loser that cannot control his gambling habits. And yet we route for him throughout this movie because Adam Sandler gives us one of the best performances of the year. This and Joaquin Phoenix's performance in Joker are an easy top of 2019. Another great performance is the one by Julia Fox. This is her first movie and she made it look like she was a veteran. Even my boy KG aka Kevin Garnett had a good performance. The script and speed of the movie was spot on. It never dragged and it always felt like we were moving. While watching this movie you feel as if you are on the ride with Adam Sandler's character. The Safdie brothers did an amazing job with this and they got a great group of actors and actresses for this film. They deserve a ton of credit. I made my Top 10 of 2019 before watching this film, but if I hd already seen this film, this would have been number 2 on the list. This was a great experience in the theater and I suggest you go watch it as well. Definitely not a family movie though! Uncut Gems was amazing!
The Grudge (2019)
2020 Can Only Go Up
Grudge-3.9/10
A demon is brought from Japan to an American house, this demon haunts whoever walks through the front door. This was my first movie experience of 2020, and all we can go from here is UP! I have never seen the old Grudges so I am just rating this movie how I saw it. There are I believe 4 intertwining stories in this film and that can be cool in some movies, but in this one it did not work. I guess I would say the mom and the boy were the main story, and our time with them wasn't all that bad, but not to great either. We experienced a lot of the mom investigating what had occurred a couple years earlier. That is really all that happens. Every 10 or so minutes we switch point of views for a little bit, but that is it. After an hour in this film all that has happened is a few jump scares, but nothing to push the story forward. Also this film is rated R, but it doesn't show one person get killed. All the characters are forgettable and this movie is forgettable. The idea of the movie is kind of cool, but the way they went about it just did not work.
Trinkets (2019)
These Girls Can Act!!
Trinkets, going into this show I had no expectations. But Netflix usually puts out show that will glue your eyes to your TV for a week straight. This show is good, not great, not bad, not average, just good. They're some really high points in this show but they're also parts of this show that make your stomach hurt. The theme in this show is shoplifting, and not one time in this show does anyone get caught shoplifting. Also the dating relationships in this show are very weird and are over the place, people cheating on each other than getting right back together, parents cheating on each other and a few other awkward relationships. But what makes this show is the 3 girls dynamic relationship. I loved every scene they all 3 were in. They had great chemistry and the 3 actresses were pretty good. When you got away from these 3 girls the acting got very average. But these girls made this show and I loved watching their relationship bud from basically nothing. I do hope they make a season 2 and it looks like that is in the plan with how season 1 ended. I would suggest trying this show for sure!
Selling Sunset (2019)
Guilty Pleasure
You will learn nothing while watching this show. This show is very shallow. But I was up late one night and I got HOOKED. I don't usually get hooked to shows like this, but this one is so different that it got me. Yes, the women are beautiful in this show, but what lays under their skin i craziness. Now I am sure they are great people, but this show shows us a side to most of the ladies that makes me not want to call the Oppenheim Group. I couldn't imagine having conversations with some of these ladies. But, I did like the show! And I will take that back, when working they were pretty professional, except for a fee instances. But overall I liked it, and was amazed on how hooked I was to this show. I hope a season two is made and I think everyone should give it a chance. Plus!!! THE NICEST ONE IS MAYA!
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Best Movie of 2019 So Far
I went into Alita without watching a trailer so I had no idea what to expect. Within the first 5 movies I was hooked. This movie was very very good, and so far is the best movie of a young 2019. The character Alita in this film is a work of masterpiece. The CGI in this film is some of the best I have ever seen. Every seen in this film looks so real and it engages the audience wonderfully. My favorite aspect of this film was watching Alita in action. Every action scene is so well done and I loved it. The one gripe I have about this film is the other characters. No one is bad, but no one else really stands out. Mahershala Ali, Christopher Walsh, Jennifer Connelly are definitely not bad, but they just aren't given much. However Keean Johnson and his characters love interests with Alita is not done to well.
Other than that though I really liked this movie. Alita is a movie in the future and the film brings you into this world and you feel like you are part of it.
The Upside (2017)
I don't understand the low ratings.
The Upside is a movie that I really wanted to see. The trailer looked amazing and I love Kevin Hart. This movie is kind of different for Kevin. Of course Kevin had his moments of comedy in this movie, but he also showed that he could act in a drama in this film. In my opinion this is one of his best performances to date and every scene he is in is amazing. The best thing about this movie is the relationship Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston have on screen.
I do not understand the bad ratings for this film. I understand that there was another movie made about this story a few years ago. But I haven't seen that movie so I can't compare this movie to that movie. And I doubt I would watch that film. I felt like this film was made very well and I would assume that it's rating will start to go up.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017)
Hugely Underrated
A Series of Unfortunate Events is one of the biggest surprises in the last five years. This show was outstanding. I just finished the last season; season 3, and I am a little sad it is over. This show is like no other show you would ever watch. I am not saying it is the best show ever, but this show is a breath of fresh air. It's so different from everything else on TV and Netflix that it is just a really fun watch. I have never read the books or seen the movie so this is my first time experiencing this story. A major help to this show is the casting. Of course Neil Patrick Harris is amazing, but also is Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes. These three characters give amazing performances across the three seasons. Sometimes this show will make you uncomfortable because of how different it is, but I think it is okay. After the first 10 minutes of the very first episode you can tell that this show is going to be a bit different. But I loved this show and believed it is a show more people should try.
Atomic Blonde (2017)
Surprisingly Good
A film about a MI6 in Berlin, Germany during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. Charlize Theron plays agent Lorraine Broughton in this film and she does a outstanding job with this character. She was in many action scenes and she must have been through extreme training to pull of some of the stunts she did in this film. That takes me to the action scenes. All the action scenes was great but one was simply great. The scene were she was trying to keep Spyglass safe was great. This action scene was a good 10 minuets long and is one of the best action scenes I have ever seen. Charlize Theron was great in this film and another agent was very good in this film. James McAvoy played another MI6 agent in this film and he was great as usual. So that's the good with this film, but there is also the bad. This film has NO character development. After this film was over I had learned nothing about any of the characters in this film. Another thing I do not like in this film is that they show Charlize Theron talking to her superiors in the beginning of the film. We know that she lives because of this and during the film it routinely goes back to this room and Theron and her superiors talking. This takes some of the edge out of the movie. But overall this film is very entertaining and if you like action this movie is for you.
Green Book (2018)
Best Movie Of 2018
This film is a spectacle to behold. After first watching this movie I knew it was good but it has gotten even better the more and more I think about it. It was just simply amazing. This movie is a movie that has sort of went under the radar but I loved it and the reviews show that the people and critics have also loved it. 9/10 easily.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Great Movie
This was a great movie. Last years Avengers had a ton of build up, but it was just OK, cause cities don't fall from the sky. This movie also had a lot of built up, and it was all well deserved. This movie was great. The only thing I would change is that the Black Panther would have helped Iron verse Captain America and Bucky. Iron Man would have beaten Captain America one on one, but of course Bucky with one are comes back to help Captain America win. The new Spider Man was also cool, he was really really young. The Black Panther was probably the coolest thing about the movie, and I cant wait for his own movie to come out next year.
