The Shannara Chronicles (2016)
Not a waste of your time, trust me.
I'm extremely picky when it comes to watching shows. I have to care. I'm glad to admit that I care! It's not perfect, it has it's downfalls, but this show is very special. There are reasons why it's not a perfect 10, and I'll eloborate about it below. I'll also address some of the criticism this show gets here.
The bad -
The show is aimed at a younger audience, as in teens to young adults, but it has a mature theme. Some might call it a bit "edgy" (very slightly though in my taste) but not to the point where it seems too strained, and it really depends if you're bothered by that or not.
Character arcs and especially character development only really happen to the supporting roles. Whether it's the Elves or the Rovers. Some of the time to finish the arc the character has to die. But we'll come back to that below.
The good -
The show isn't afraid of killing characters, even ones you were introduced to from the start, which what sets it apart from Twilight, and especially Shadowhunters (both books and the tv show) and what gives it even more purpose, sense of danger goes well with the other mature themes that it has. More shows should do this, honestly.
Arcs are well planned out. You really get what motives the character to act like it does and what makes it do the things that it does and say. I never felt like a character died before it needed to do what it's supposed to do.
World building is the greatest quality this show has. They really did an excellent job on this, perhaps it's even on par with Stargate.
Eretria might be my favorite female character ever.
The middle -
Because the show has a strong complex female lead, it get a lot of unwarranted criticism about it's "women empowerment" and I beg to differ! Women are not acting masculine and men are not disempowered in this show, unlike many other stories in recent media (comics, book, other TV shows). It also doesn't do the opposite, where the female lead just waits for her hot vampire boyfriend. I honestly believe it's men and women, working together for a better cause. As much as it has it's female lead, it also has an equal amount of male lead.
If you have any doubts, give this show a try. It's one of the only worthwhile fantasy shows that going on at the moment.
Jurassic World (2015)
Loved the beginning, hated the end
I hate it when animals die in movies. I especially hate it when no one cares about it. Owen (Chris Pratt) seemed to care for his raptors all the movie, but in the end when all four died he couldn't care less? No tear, not even a word. Isn't it inconsistency? I didn't recognize Bryce Dallas Howard at all, I thought it was Kristen Bell? I liked Nick Robinson's acting, it was on point. Couldn't stand Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio). Couldn't wait for for him to be bitten by a dinosaur. In terms of CGI and special effects, they we're on point too. The textures looked real, same with the animals movement and so on. The movie isn't bad, but it is a waste of time. Kinda like Into The Woods. Both have a weird ending. I defiantly didn't get my desired ending.
The Messengers (2015)
Cool, but predictable.
The cast is good. The idea seems cool. The only problem is that it's really easy to connect the dots, and kinda predictable. For example - Vera lost her child, Peter doesn't have parents. The kid in the video that Lucifer showed her kinda looks like him. But it's OK, no biggie, I kinda wanted this to happened and wanted them to be close to each other. It's not The 100, so don't come with high expectations but it's a nice show to pass time. I kinda wanna watch more of it to be honest. Hopefully, in the end, I want all 6 (?) to care for each other and treat each other like a family. It's probably the only thing that will make me continue watching this series.
Stargate Universe (2009)
I really loved this show, too bad it got canceled!
Great cast, amazing plot. This show deserved to be the spin-off of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and be the 3rd part of the trilogy. Even though in terms of IMDb score it's the last one (SSG1 - 8.5, SA - 8.1, SSGU - 7.7) it can still be argued that it's better than rest of the trilogy. I personally think that 7.7 is decent enough to start a 3rd season. I love Ming-Na Wen too, so she was a big plus for me! I just don't get why it got discontinued. Well, probably because of number of viewers, but who cares about that? this show is a masterpiece. If you're a fan of the trilogy, watch it. You won't regret it.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Movie > book
As a book lover, I thought I would love this series. Bought all 3 of them without reading the first one. But it wasn't the case at all - I then read the first book. And got so bored of it. But the movie? not at all. The movie is great. It has a dark vibe in it. Good cast. Nice effects. It is defiantly good enough to start a franchise. And I can't tell you how much I love "Heart by Heart" by Demi Lovato, which is a part of the soundtrack. I think everyone here are being a little too harsh, sure this isn't Avatar nor Twilight but it's a very nice movie. In my opinion it worths more than 6 points, maybe something like 7.0- 7.9
Into the Woods (2014)
Bad movie alert!
To be completely honest I didn't expect this movie to be a musical. But since I liked Frozen, Tangled and Wicked I figured I might like this one as well. As a fairy tail lover I love how they merged a few fairy tales together but when the Baker's task was done everything started to go downhill and it became really, really strange. I wouldn't even call it a family movie because it's way too extreme in my opinion. I don't know what I should call it - a fantasy? a horror film? or just a bad one... There are too, and so many random deaths. Jack's mother, Baker's wife, THE WITCH... and other character were not seem to care at all. What happened between the prince and the baker's wife by the way? very random, again. The ending was one of the strangest endings I've ever seen. Everything had a little to no detail on it - Why and how did the witch died? She needed her beans to remain young but when she got them back she didn't turn young again, how does it make sense? The girl who played Red Hood was so annoying, when everyone else were starting to die I wished she would get smashed by the giant or fall off a cliff as well. I'll give this movie a 6 out of 10 JUST because of the cast. And maybe a little for the effort. If it wasn't for the cast the movie would've defiantly fail.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
One of the best movies I've watched these last years.
I can't lie, I love almost everything about this movie. Background story, characters, cast, witches, WEAPONS. Everything is so well done and cool. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton really took me away with their acting! Even though the story takes place at a village and woods, it still has a modern vibe to it, probably because of the high tech look of the weapons and the way Hansel and Gretel are dressed. Even though I'm not that impressed with Mina's (Pihla Viitala) acting, the cast is purely great. I actually had my friends over for Friday and we were all watching it (Note: it was probably the 8th time I saw this movie). They had low expectations but after they saw it they couldn't stop talking about it! It has lots of funny moments and good surprises too. This movie would be perfect for you if you're a fairy tale and a horror sorta dark films lover!
