The Blue Planet (2001)
Absolutely amazing!
The entire series, not just The Blue Planet, is nothing short of amazing. The best nature series we have ever seen. The episode on the deep is like traveling to outer space! We have watched this with our 10 and 7 year old boys and all four of us have not been able to pull away. We read a negative comment on this and could not believe it. There is so much new information that we never learned in school. Its also the best view we have seen from any television or movie into the delicate balance of our earth's eco-system. The amount of time and effort put into capturing these shots is very much apparent when you sit down and watch this series.
A must see for everyone.
Golden Boy: Sasurai no o-benkyô yarô (1995)
Softcore Anime Erotica with a little humor and plot as filler.
We were excited to rent this one after reading a few reviews and seeing that it scored so highly here. Well, we got it home and could not believe what we saw. Its basically comes off as if its written by some hard up perverted old guy who could not help inserting his sexual frustrations and fantasies into an anime film that really lacks in plot and humor. The main character is all over the place... one moment, he is like an immature little kid, the next moment he is mature and intelligent, then heroic, then a perverted stalker.
The worst part is all of the out of place sexual content. I have no problem with sex and dig a movie that has some good sexual energy, but this is just presented in a way that is creepy. Nipple slips, close ups of a girls crotch (many times) in white panties, or a swimsuit. It was totally out of place and it seemed as if the person who wrote it was trying to live out some fantasies through his cartoon characters.
We were expecting something of a mature nature, but we just kept looking at each other and asking what the heck the point of this was... besides jiggling cartoon boobs and poor dialogue. If you want to see some cartoon characters cleavage and crotch's... this is for you. If you are looking for something beyond that, this movie was empty. The characters and dialogue were just plain irritating.
Musa (2001)
Great characters, killer battle scenes and cinematography
If you liked the Seven Samurai, you will most definitely dig this movie. Great characters and cinematography. The battles are gory, but appropriately so. Some really awesome fighting and not too hokey as many of these movies can be.
I loved the costuming and the storyline, while tragic at times, is solid and gripping. You hardly notice the subtitles except the few times when they have typos. Nothing that would take away from the film.
Basically, if you are in the mood for a good action flick with heroes and villains and some who are in between, watch this movie!
8/10 from me.
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Great Acting... but that was it!
OK... Maybe it was a case of high expectations leading to a let down, but seriously, this movie was just not that good. The acting was great, Brando looks great... but what else was there? The story was honestly a little corny and unrealistic at times. It dragged on and really was uninteresting in our opinion. The only reason we would recommend it is that it shows Brando in his prime... quite a shocking contrast to what we see today.
Its almost tough writing this type of commentary when the masses regard this movie so highly. But hey, you have to be honest about what you think and we just were not impressed.
