Ponmagal Vandhal (2020)

Valuable story line saved only by the star cast!

Young lawyer Venba seeking justice for a women framed as a psycho killer.

Ponmagal Vandhal is courtroom drama with a precious story line and heavy star cast. Writers tried to keep the audience engage with story throughout the 120mins by emotional and powerful dialogues. Cinematographer Ramji scored high in this movie. Jyotika and Parthiban performance were amazing. Most of the actors are highly experienced in this movie and their performance will overshadow the big loopholes. However movie couldn't stand up to the story line due to its old fashioned screenplay and directional style. There was a CG shot inspired from the series 'Westworld', which looks totally irrelevant. Week characterization for some of the important characters turns out to be a huge negative for this film.

Verdict: Strong story line make your 120mins worth for watching this film.

Naanum Rowdy Thaan (2015)

Urban laughter revenge!

Plot: Low-profile funny youngster who says himself as a 'don' helps his dumb girl friend to murder the real don who demolished her family.

Director Vignesh Shivan tried a black comedy gangster script with Vijay Sethupathi and Nayantara in lead. Vijay Sethupathi character just remind me 'Das' of Soodhu Kavvum. Nayantara is a dumb girl seeking for revenge.

Both VJ Sethupathi and Nayan became huge positive for this success. Next to lead roles RJ Balaji occupies nearly more than 50% of screen, but very few one line comedy worked.

Veteran star Parthiban as main antagonist add some good flavor to the movie. Other gangsters in the film such as motta Rajendran, Anandaraj & Mansoor Ali Khan also good. Cast also includes two cops Raadhika as VJ Sethupathi's mom & Azhagam Perumal as Nayanthara's dad.

The way how Vijay Sethupathi team & Mansoor Ali Khan team attacking Parthiban is one of the best laughter scene in recent times.

Movie has very few cons such as commercial aspects added by the director via RJ Balaji. For the few days in Tamil industry film- makers trying to attract Ajith fans, I don't know why.

Anirudh scores a decent BGM. George Williams never failed to impress. As a producer surely Dhanush will know how to promote the film & make steady ride in box office.

Verdict: Vijay Sethupathi and Nayantara just steal the show.

The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

Big budget, Below average

Plot: Witch queen seeking revenge against the witch hunter who annihilate her centuries ago.

Unsuccessful witch hunters story continues in Hollywood. This movie could be director Breck Eisner next big disaster after Sahara in 2005.

Cast includes some big name. Vin Diesel plays a role of witch hunter named Kaulder. While Michael Caine & Elijah Wood plays the role of father & son.

-What about Rose Leslie? Game of Thrones star plays the character Chloe(Dream walker), teams up with Vin Diesel & Elijah Wood to defeat the Queen Witch.

-Does Michael Caine has extended role? No, Dolan-36 just hand over his responsibility to his son Dolan-37 in few mins. His presence seems to be special appearance.

-Last question about Vin Diesel? Kaulder in this modern world, from centuries ago. 48yrs old lead actor from Fast & Furious franchise is always good at action. Sure his fans would watch this movie.

Dreams made by Dream walker to Vin diesel is good to watch. This fantasy adventure is made with the budget of $90 million, but CG looks week.

Verdict: Strictly this movie is only for Action-Fantasy lovers or Vin Diesel fans.

Momentum (I) (2015)

Campanelli's maiden attempt goes in vain!

Without any new or unusual plot in his female centred action flick debutant director Stephen Campanelli has not succeeded.

Myself tired on hearing 'One last mission', 'Find the secrets behind the mystery', 'where is the ____?' in action thrillers.

Entire movie revolves between Olga (protagonist) & James Purefoy (antagonist). Torture scenes lead by James Purefoy shown him as a powerful villain. Former Bond girl Olga is not bad in action.

Another keyword in the cast is Morgan Freeman. His presence as senator doesn't make any difference to me. Repeated story deflates the entire movie.

Overall you can spend 90mins if you love to watch ladies in action, others please don't waste your time.

I (2015)

Unique style SHANKAR!..

Unique style is none other than spending money.

"i" released with lot of expectation. More than 2yrs in making and "i" is definitely a hard work.

Plot - Mr.Tamilnadu, handsome model and ugly hero seeking for revenge.

Vikram-Shankar made another grand combo here. Vikram hard work also not failed. Glamorous Amy is good. Stunt sequence among body builders is one of the best action in recent time. As usual Indian kings A.R.Rahman & P.C.Sreeram made a fantastic job. Other actors Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel, Ramkumar Ganesan does not make any impression. While Santhanam had a little extended role form his comic role which made all as much boring. With a predictable plot running time 189mins seems to be lengthy.

Verdict: Even though movie doesn't have any strong content, budget invested is damm too high.

Madras (2014)

Dark side of MADRAS

Prestige, Politics, Friendship, Love & Anger is MADRAS.

Director Ranjith selection in cast and other technical crew work's out without any fault. All lead and supporting gave the new colour to the Chennai. Supporting actor Kalaiyarasan seems to be a promising one in the future. Composer Santhosh Narayan's delightful music is extraordinary.

After Berlin wall, Madras movie has a dangerous wall. Realistic stunt sequence is trending among the Action lovers and this move doesn't fail to keep it.

Verdict: Welcome to the new colour of Chennai city.

Jeeva (2014)

Jeeva scores century!!! Must watch.

Jeeva revolves around a story of a young cricketer's passion and life. Susindran make the dark politics in cricket team selection as the main theme. Lead actor Vishnu and actress Sri Divya gives a fantastic performance. Other supporting cast also made a good on screen performance particularly Lakshman, Charlie & even Soori.

We all know very well about the politics in cricket team selection but none of Indian film focused on this issue, So Director Susindran deserves a challenging victory for cricket fans.

Even though Jeeva movie has strong script, Director includes some basic Tamil cinema formula.

Verdict: Overall Jeeva is a must watch film for the current situation in Indian Cricket.

Kochadaiiyaan (2014)

Brave attempt in RAJNI style!!!

Kochadaiiyaan first performance capture movie in India. It is not an easy thing to create a mega budget animated movie with a good marketing status in India. It is possible only with the presence of Superstars like Rajnikanth. Expectation among the fans were high (Kochadaiiyaan visuals will be similar to Avatar or Adventures of Tintin), anyhow trailer received a mixed response only.

But a historic story with energetic dialogue leads the movie till the end with decent result in this brave attempt. The big name Rajnikanth keeps cheering always. Another big name A.R.Rahman, made an experimental BGM through the movie which keep us attractive.

Positive signs of performance capture technology:

-Absolutely brilliant 3D effects in the action sequences which is new to our fans.

-Legendary actor late Nagesh is recreated.

-Hope in future we can reach the Hollywood movies with a reasonable budget.

Cast also includes Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone which will be a big box office factor in North India. With this summer Kochadaiiyaan is going to be a good entertaining movie for family audience.

Remember Kochadaiiyaan is not a Hollywood movie like 'The Adventures of Tintin' or 'Avatar' but it is the best Indian animated movie.

Verdict: If you watch the 'Kochadaiiyaan' in big screen defiantly it would be a great experience.

Naan Sigappu Manithan (2014)

Watch it for Narcolepsy!

Story - A man suffering from Narcolepsy disorder, have to strike back for his love.

Positives: New term Narcolepsy in the story, Vishal & Lakshmi Menon, extraordinary first half, Good cinematography, Excellent BGM by GV.Prakash.

Negatives: Last 30mins.

Vishal-Director Thiru combination for 3rd time. Most of us now only came to know what is Narcolepsy. The way director explained about a guy suffering from Narcolepsy from childhood is brilliant. Vishal shared a romantic screen with Lakshmi Menon for the second time. Naan Sigappu Manithan is completely good until the story unlocks something in the screen. Iniya appearance is not fair. Some flashback for revenge is not so strong. Remember still NSM have more +ve than -ve.

Bottom-line - Average commercial with some new dose.

Maan Karate (2014)

Please make some logic noise, we are not in 1980's

Story - How a funny youth turns a professional boxer.

Positives: Some comedy by Siva Karthikeyan, Colorful visual, decent songs by Anirudh, Release under big banner.

Negatives: Except these few +ve all other seems to be huge -ve.

Hansika used only for songs. Soori special appearance doesn't make any sense. Writers tried jump from Fantasy to Sports drama. But story can't withstand all this genre. If this type of movie released before 30yrs, definitely MK would make some good business. Even now this movie made a good opening because of the big banner and not for movie quality.

If I know something about boxing then I could rate only 1 out of 10 star.

Bottom-line: Please make some logic noise, we are not in 1980's.

Biriyani (2013)

Two friends unknowingly involved into a crime scene lead to a mystery.

Biriyani is definitely an entertaining movie. Karthi made his good comeback. Venkat Prabhu proved him once again as a Entertainer guarantee. Anyhow screenplay is bit similar to his previous Mankatha. VP also made some actors in unwanted cameo appearance for some sort of commercial appearance. New type of climax make you to feel Biriyani as a worthy movie. Cinematography Sakthi Saravanan made a good job and provide us a good color recipe. Editor Praveen & Srikanth made brilliant work which made a huge support to the movie. As his 100th movie Yuvan made some new type of songs & BGM which suits the story line perfectly. Cast including lead & supporting actors done their roll well.

Biriyani is mysterious comedy thriller with some interesting twists.
