Elementary (2012)
Not bad a procedural, but not a good Holmes, either
I should admit that I'm a huge BBC Sherlock fan, and I've read more than a few of original stories, too. I follow Mentalist regularly and overall, I like procedurals. So I tried to watch this series' pilot with an open mind. It didn't exactly disappoint, specially acting wise: Miller is quite charismatic and Liu makes a worthy sidekick; but their characters are just pale shadows of the original ones; so far so that if you didn't know their names, you couldn't guess, and not just because Watson is a woman. In my personal opinion, Mentalist's Patrick Jane makes a better Sherlock Holmes than this Sherlock; at least he is not a tattooed drug addict. It's a rather good procedural, but not close to your familiar Sherlock Holmes; So why misuse the big sleuth's name, when you can and you are going to make your own quite different version? The mystery in itself, hardly presented anything new and fresh; and those familiar with Mentalist will make comparisons with a very similar case (s1,ep4: Ladies in Red); specially in a few crucial clues and motives. Story had some holes and 1 big gaffe; one of them includes using Googled info selectively and just for convenience. Final Verdict: I'm gonna stick around for a few more episodes and see if they can hook me up with better stories, and I'll pretend his name is John and hers, Jane Smith.
Clueless (1995)
Clueless based on...!!!
It's a nice movie, a decent romantic comedy set in a high school. But what almost shocked me was the fact that storyline was essentially based on Emma (by Jane Austin),albeit set in modern era; without naming the original author! Though I don't remember Emma being as superficial as Cher(leading character in this movie), as she really is clueless! I didn't particularly like Alicia Silverstone in the aforementioned leading role, but found Paul Rudd to be a nice updated dorky version of Mr. Knightly; Brittany Morphy was effective and almost unrecognizable in the role of another clueless new student, whom Cher takes the responsibility of saving (Harriet in the original story)!
The Dirty Picture (2011)
Totally not worth the time.
I don't consider myself a Hindi movie fan. I've watched quite a few Indian movies and honestly didn't like most of them; and this movie is a classic example of why: over the top performances, not so likable or understandable lead character in a barely coherent, exaggerated story of rise and fall of a so-called star (which has been told over and over again, in much better movies), quite with the predictable supposedly tragic finale, if you CARED enough for the character and I didn't. Vidiya Balan tries hard -sometimes too hard!- but a combination of utter weaknesses in character development and not being seductive enough for the role, proves almost all her efforts futile. It didn't even have a good old fashioned song and dance item, which is my favorite part of any Indian movie ;D ....P.S.: Can anybody tell me if those kind of movies with excessive amount of sensuality really existed? I didn't think that conservative Indian culture (atleast until a few years back, if you will) that almost criminalized Hrithik and Ash for kissing in Dhoom 2, would allow such movies to be made, let alone glorify its stars.
