Violent Night (2022)
Die hard meets Home Alone meets Bad Santa meets..Thor?
This has a number of laugh out loud moments, but only if you go into it with your..ass/butthole/anus relaxed ( in movie joke!!).
Yes, it has all of the typical heist/hostage/dysfunctional family/xmasy..etc movie tropes included, but does it all with imagination and flair. A nice mix of well portrayed characters are given an entertaining script to work with, and they all do a great job, especially David Harbour and the young Leah Brady. Beverley D'Angelo of National lampoons Christmas Vacation, plays the hard boiled family matriarch.
Am putting this on my Christmas watch list for sure. With a bit extra something? This would have been a classic, along with National lampoon, Bad Santa and Elf. But if you like a lot of violence and gore with your mince pies and xmas sherry, then you could do worse. HO HO HO!
On the Line (2022)
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright could have rescued this...thing
This could have been a decent idea for a movie, if only they had brought in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright to write and direct it, and Pegg to take over from Mel Gibson as the main lead.
This had the ingredients of a comedy/suspense/thriller if ever I saw one, along the lines of Hot Fuzz, Worlds End etc.
I must admit I was experiencing it as a mediocre, badly acted suspense /thriller, until the line "Elvis has left the building" was uttered! After that it became more of a groan stroke chucklefest. Then the last 10 minutes or so gave way to hearty laughter at the awkwardly bad plot twists, equally bad ensemble acting, and im not sure that even Mr Gibson was treating it all that seriously? Maybe he was just relieved that it was the last scene, who knows?
The production values and cinematography were fine. Its worth a view IMO, even if only to satisfy yourself that you can still tell a bad movie from a decent one, even if it has a big star name.
Significant Other (2022)
The forest was the star
9/10 for the forest and cinematography which was very polished. Apart from one scene which had half a face cover half the shot and a deep focus into the background..nice for a film poster, but way too artsy fartsy in the film itself..just takes you out of the story and reminds you "oh yeah im watching a film!"
But then again, come the 48th minute, comes the "really? Too far, too stupid, time to hit the stop button on this".
Up until then it was a slow burn, enough to keep you interested type of film. Though I still did not care about either of the main characters. In fact both of them were annoying in their own ways, a too needy boyfriend and a morose unenthusiastic girlfriend.
Go watch An American Werewolf in London instead.
Pumpkin (2002)
Stepford daughters meet Forest Gump
I only watched this because of the lead actress, Christina Rici owns this movie. But even she cannot ultimately save it from its over reaching ambition, as a satire on oh so perfect American values. At times it seems to go too far, inducing Cringing moments of reality. Then again, sometimes it seems to hold back from driving home the point that we are all hypocrites from time to time. Its uncomfortable viewing as a dark comedy or drama. As an outright silly farce it could have worked as a comedy, but then it would have lost its message. Not exactly an enjoyable watch but interesting. If you take it seriously then I doubt that you will last past the 30 min mark? It is almost 2 hours long, a lot of which goes on overused scenes.
Been caught out by 600 characters rule so..dum de dum de dum de traa laaa laa la,,goodness not written this much since school, by this time my inkpot would have ran dry!! Lovely weather today, not too hot but sunny periods nontheless. Not too long now and it will be Christmas.
Just thought of another Rici movie ive not watched in a long time..black snake moan, must search it out.
Bull (2021)
unpleasant family values
Watched up to 35 minutes until it overstepped the mark from gritty violence to unwarranted evil. Decided to carry on watching and at 37 minutes it stepped over the mark it had previously stepped over..again unwarranted.
Its a shame, as up until then it drew me in as a decent low budget brit gangster flic. Good locations, editing and passable script and acting.
Four Lions (2010)
A quick check if this is for you..
Two jihadists travel to Pakistan and are picked up by a contact who shows them into a raggedy back room, back wall of which has crates of chickens.
Bro1 " whats he done with his rabbits bro?"
bro2 "theyyre not rabbits bro, theyre chickens"
Bro1 " theyre Fing rabits bro!"
Bro2 " if theyre rabbits bro...where are theyre ears?"
Bro1 " thats what I mean bro!"
If youre picking yourself up off the floor laughing? Then this is the comedy for you.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Disjointed, random nonsense...pretty though
Ok, everyone involved in the production of this movie, directing, producing, editing, screenwriting, cinematography or sound, please stand up.
Right, cinematography and sound?..yous people can leave, overall good job, well done.
The rest of you stay seated, the poor people who paid good money and time watching your efforts, would like you to explain why yous made such a Fu.....mess up of your individual jobs? Hope yous brought some lunch.
The Goldfinch (2019)
Melodrama, coming of age tale, romance...
Fine arts and antiques backdrop, terrorist happening, and all this in the first 2 hours..leaving the final 30 mins as an
international/drug/crime/thriller!! So you cant say you don't get your moneys worth?
But I enjoyed it due to the mostly good acting, and cinematography and subtle soundtrack. Decided not to read the book first, as a quick browse of Amazon reviews did not recommend it.
