Journey to Hell (2022)
Saw it at Ward 16 in Hawaii - thank you!
Saw this with my Bible study group in Hawaii and we all loved the film. We sat there like everyone else until after the credits rolled. We were all awe-struck how powerful the film was. Mahalo to the film people behind this movie.
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Great comedy
I love Allen. He shines in every film I have seen him in. I love his humour and his ability to act and so I was delighted to see him in a role that catered for his style of acting and humour, but also showed a more mature and serious side to his acting.
I watched this movie not knowing what to expect, except that the movie's lead stars (Woody and Diane Keaton) had been given very good reviews about their part in this film. I have to say I enjoyed the film. It was entertaining, funny but yet so sad.
The mystery is actually engrossing!
The film is about two characters who are miserable in their love lives (for different reasons) and in a strange country far from home. Their friendship develops so nicely and quickly that they become so attached to each other that saying goodbye is the hardest thing in the world.
As much as the film shows happiness in the form of the friendship, the film touches you in an all different way towards its end. After seeing this film, I found myself thinking about it all too much afterwards.
The Genius Club (2006)
My Two Cents
First I'll throw in my two cents on an issue I wish I didn't have to comment on. This is a remarkable film for no other reason that it evokes passion. The critics who dislike the film continue to bash only the religious implications. But this is disingenuous. Surely, a film can stand on its merits regardless of whether one believes in God or not.
Movies that toyed with similar themes, like "12 Angry Men" or "Beautiful Mind," though great films, do not come close to packing the emotional wallop this film delivers. I dare anyone to tell me they didn't get teared up as the movie progressed and the characters reveal their own tragedies.
Of course as a realist drama, the performances in the film are crucial. Scalia is outstanding, as one would expect, but so is Tom Sizemore and the rest of the cast. Part of this must be due to the filmmakers, as Scalia, for example, doesn't come across nearly as well to me in some of his other films.
If The Genius Club has a flaw, it's that its relatively short (compared to the material available) running time makes for some unexplained or shallow turnabouts of character in the complex of good/evil interplay. The casino owner seems particularly distant to the viewer, for example, which is appropriate to the final state of her character, but which could have been explained better in transformation. But how wonderful is it to have a casino owner - the ingenuity of bringing the most shallow world and mixing it in with real religion is nothing short of imaginative audacity.
Finally note the contrast between the restrained closing scene (which is also the climax) and the melodramatic style of the almost everything that has preceded it in the film.
This is a fabulous, heartrending film, with grand, biblical and universal subtexts and an unusually developed but extremely charming romance. Unless you're completely averse to realist drama, you must see 'Genius Club' at least once.
The Verdict (1982)
Intense
Intense film that shows the devastation of alcohol.
Great performance by Mr. Newman. One of the best in his entire career.
I see that this film got a low 7.5 rating. Please ignore the rating. This is what happens in a society where ignorance still flourishes. You will notice that the majority of the comments are all very positive. That's because the REAL people who went and saw this movie knows just how good it really is. I'm sure the majority of the scores that are below a 6 are from jealous people who didn't even see the film. They are just trying to "hate" on Paul Newman and his films because they are successful. The film was one of the best in the U.S.
Groundhog Day (1993)
Excellent comedy
I liked this movie! I really thought it was about an 10 on the scale, but just couldn't quite pull the trigger on a 9.
I probably should have given it a 11 for the simple reason that it was VERY clever. How many hundreds of movies have we seen about time travel? And, how many times have we seen someone interact with another person in their early lives? But, to be able to interact with YOURSELF - and for both parties to know it - and to be able for both parties to teach the other something valuable that changes their lives - is really remarkable. And, if you think I am telling you the punch line, I'm not. There is a little more of a twist to it. Not quite the Sixth Sense, mind you, but a little surprise at the end.
It was simple, sweet and even a little romantic. I would strongly recommend it for anyone. Interestingly, the survey of reviewers in Entertainment Weekly averaged a B- as I recall, but someone gave it a D. Seriously, they have to be out of their mind.
Groundhog Day is awesome fun.
