Numb3rs (2005)
Rare Gem for the Whole Family
Numb3rs is a rare gem in the world of modern television. When most shows revel in outrageous and offensive behavior, those of us seeking a high-quality show finally have something to watch. This show isn't centered around cruelty, lewdness or malice, but teamwork and family, things most programs today lack. Rob Morrow and David Krumholtz are perfect as brothers Don and Charlie, who are almost complete opposites, yet they work together well to solve the problems that arise in each episode. And the other members of the cast are just as important as the two main characters. Each member of the team has something to contribute, and by the end of the show, you get the impression that the resolution wouldn't have been reached if any one person was left out of the picture. This show isn't about solving crimes as much as it's about working together and realizing that one person can't accomplish very much alone. True, the dialog can be a little forced at times, but everything else in the show is so enjoyable, any weaknesses in the writing are forgivable. This is a show the whole family can watch comfortably.
Swing Time (1936)
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Top Form
Swing Time ranks right alongside Shall We Dance? as the best Fred Astaire - Ginger Rogers film. Astaire is a member of a dance company, but he plans to leave the company to get married. The men of the company will do anything to keep the wedding from happening. Astaire is eventually sent to New York, where he meets the beautiful Ginger Rogers. Falling in love is never simple for Astaire and Rogers, and the road to a happy conclusion is filled with laughter, frustration, and the best singing and dancing the two have to offer. This film is worth the money to rent, if not buy!
Hands Across the Table (1935)
Wonderful Romantic Comedy
Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray have a rare chemistry that can closely be compared to that between William Powell and Myrna Loy. Both are excellent as gold diggers trying to help each other get ahead. This is one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen!
Monsignor Renard (2000)
Wonderfully Presented Story
This film shows most of the horrors of war without being too graphic. The actors portray their characters wonderfully, whether you hate the character or love them. Every character has a depth that seems to be hard to find. You can't help but become emotionally involved.
Evelyn Prentice (1934)
Suspenseful and Intriguing
This is a mystery film that, although not quite of the calabre of The Thin Man, builds suspense and intrigue thoroughly. Both William Powell and Myrna Loy are superb, playing characters completely different from those they play in The Thin Man series. They breathe a new life into a common plot. This film may seem slow, but it is certainly worth it.
Sliding Doors (1998)
Unique and Natural
This film is a lightweight comedy/drama with a unique story. Although Gwyneth Paltrow plays the same character in both aspects of the story, both Helens seem completely different. The flow of the story seems quite natural and the cast does a wonderful job going through the twists and turns of their characters lives. It's a chick flick with none of the sap.
Last of the Summer Wine (1973)
Pure Genius
This is by far the best British comedy ever shown in the US. The relationships between the characters are real and the humor of the show comes from this fact. The idea of a show about three old men who come up with such outrageous things to do with their time is pure genius. No wonder it's lasted so long.
You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Remarkable cast, fine film
Frank Capra assembled a remarkable cast to give us a film that is both humorous and thoughtful. Although it strays from the play it is based on, it still shows us that two families from two different worlds can blend beautifully. This film also provides James Stewart at his best, alongside a very likeable Jean Arthur. This film is one to watch if you need a good laugh.
