Ed Harris — recently seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart in “Love Lies Bleeding” — is getting back behind the camera to direct his own adaptation of Kim Zupan’s acclaimed novel “The Ploughmen.” Owen Teague, currently playing the lead in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Nick Nolte and Bill Murray have come on board to star in the neo-noir crime thriller, which will go into production in Montana this Fall. Amy Madigan and Lily Harris are also set for the film.
“The Ploughmen” will mark Harris’ third feature as director after his Western “Appaloosa” and multi-Oscar nominated “Pollock.” Described being in the vein of “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” the film is set in the wilderness of Montana, where a strange friendship develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer. John Gload (Nolte) is a killer so adept at his job that only now has he been apprehended.

Book adaptations are tricky business. There's so much expectation and weight behind that more often than not it's advised to try not to get your hopes up. That hasn't stopped any of us from giving into the hype, though, and after seeing the teaser trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series, "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," it's difficult not to feel that hope bubbling up beneath the surface.
We're already on good footing here, though. Rick Riordan, the author of the books, is heavily involved. After his rightful criticisms of the film series, having Riordan's signature on the series should settle fans' fears. Also, they didn't age up the characters this time and, with an eight episode season order, viewers will get more time to spend with Percy and his friends this go-round.
Featuring a brand-new cast of tweens, the series follows the titular Percy Jackson through a journey of self-discovery.

We finally have more details about the upcoming “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+. According to author and executive producer Rick Riordan, the plan is to tackle one book per season.
“It’s going to be, hopefully, one season for every book, which gives us time to do justice to the entire story, as opposed to a movie where you have to make some cuts,” Riordan told TheWrap during D23 Expo on Saturday.
The first season will focus on “The Lightning Thief,” which is the first book in the series, Riordan said. That book and the second, “The Sea of Monsters,” have already been adapted into feature films, but the other three books remain untouched by any adaptations thus far.
This is our first real understanding of how Disney+ aims to move forward with a franchise since it isn’t always a given that a TV adaptation will...

Cue the lightning. The first teaser trailer for Disney’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series is finally here.
In the teaser, which debuted at the D23 Expo on Saturday, we get a look at Walker Scobell (“The Adam Project”) as the Lightning Thief himself.
“I didn’t want to be a Half Blood. Being a Half Blood is dangerous,” Percy laments as the camera pans over snippets of Camp Half Blood. He warns that, if you also sense you might be different, it might be best to ignore the signs.
“Once you know what you are, you’ll sense it too, and they’ll come for you,” he says ominously before the clip cuts to a closeup of his face as lightning crackles around him.

Jon Steinberg, co-writer and executive producer of the upcoming “Percy Jackson” Disney+ series, knows the franchise may not be in the same pantheon as, say, Marvel or “Star Wars” in terms of audience awareness. But he sees that as an opportunity rather than a disadvantage.
Author Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” fantasy book series has sold more than 180 million copies worldwide and spawned two feature films. But the Disney+ series, which has tapped “The Adam Project” breakout star Walker Scobell to tackle the titular role, will be many viewers’ first foray into the material.

Actress Alexandra Daddario has weighed in on the backlash against Leah Jeffries casting as Annabeth Chase in the upcoming Disney+ show Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Daddario previously played Annabeth Chase in two Percy Jackson films The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters.

After having spent the last five years at Camp Half-Blood, she longs to test her mettle in the human world, of which she barely remembers. She trains Percy to survive the mythological world, and in turn, he helps her connect with her humanity. She is also portrayed in the books as white.

Rick Riordan will not stand for any racism toward or bullying of the new “Percy Jackson” cast. On Tuesday, the author issued a lengthy statement defending the casting of Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase.
In a post on his website, Riordan — who wrote the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” book series, will write the pilot of the Disney+ series, and executive produce the series — noted that most of the responses to Jeffries being cast have been “overwhelmingly positive and joyous.” But there are still some out there who are upset that Annabeth, who is described as a white girl in the books, will be played by a Black actress and that’s who Riordan directed his post at.
“You either are not aware, or have dismissed, Leah’s years of hard work honing her craft, her talent, her tenacity, her focus, her screen presence,” Riordan wrote. “You refuse to believe...

‘Percy Jackson’ Author Rick Riordan Slams Racist Backlash Against Leah Jeffries’ Casting as Annabeth
“Percy Jackson” author Rick Riordan published a blog post May 10 condemning the racist backlash against Leah Jeffries, the young actor who is set to play Annabeth Chase in the upcoming Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Variety exclusively reported Jeffries’ casting on May 5. The actor will star in the show opposite Walker Scobell as Percy and Aryan Simhadri as Grover. Some “Percy Jackson” fans have expressed outrage online over Jeffries playing Annabeth because the Black actor does not match the skin color of the character as originally written in Riordan’s novels.
“This post is specifically for those who have a problem with the casting of Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase,” Riordan writes. “It’s a shame such posts need to be written, but they do…Leah brings so much energy and enthusiasm to this role, so much of Annabeth’s strength. 2022 is a year that Walker Scobell will likely never forget. He burst onto the scene with a role in the Netflix original movie The Adam Project which had him starring opposite Ryan Reynolds. Ahead of the SXSW debut of their latest film, “Slash/Back,” three of the thriller’s producers —- Scythia Films’ Dan Bekerman and Stellar Citizens’ Chris Yurkovich and Alex Ordanis —- announced the launch of the new full-service production company, Good Question Media.
Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis will serve as partners and producers in the new venture, which will oversee film and television projects, supporting them from inception through distribution and packaging with the Good Question Media development fund.
As one of the very few Canada-based private equity funds, the company is uniquely positioned to access the international treaty funding systems. But that’s just one way the veteran producers aim to use their combined expertise.
“We’ve always been united in the belief that a fundamental strength of storytelling is its ability to challenge how an audience thinks or sees the world,” Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis told Variety in a joint statement.

Liam Neeson thriller “The Marksman” defied pandemic norms with a three-month theatrical window. Five months after its release, it’s now available to rent at the standard-price $5.99 after a late-April Premium VOD debut. It claimed the #1 spot on all charts calculated after the mid-week shift. That includes FandangoNow, which ranks entries by the revenue accrued. That means it had more than triple the number of rentals as their #2 title, “Nobody,” which still costs $19.99.
VOD platforms otherwise saw ongoing success for familiar films, including “The Little Things.” The Denzel Washington action title was #1 at Spectrum, which as usual lags in reporting.
Noteworthy this week is the debut of three fresh titles, two of which are recent releases that went directly to standard pricing and saw immediate interest. “Together Together,” a comedy starring Patti Harrison and Ed Helms, and “French Exit” both saw traction. However, the real breakout is “North Hollywood,” apparently...

A simple price change created this week’s biggest shift in VOD viewing. “The Little Things,” the Denzel Washington-starring serial killer thriller that debuted day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, dropped its $19.99 premium VOD to $5.99. It rose to #1 at Apple TV and gained top-10 showings at FandangoNow and Google Play. Spectrum Cable’s chart should pick it up this week.
In its second week of PVOD play, “The Marksman” notched #1 at FandangoNow, #2 at Apple TV, and #3 at Google Play. That’s a strong response for the last two which, unlike FandangoNow, list by number of rentals rather than revenue.
“Nomadland,” newly reduced in price at Spectrum, placed #1 there. The Best Picture winner fell elsewhere, notching lower slots at Apple TV and GooglePlay. Original Screenplay winner “Promising Young Woman,” a presence for four months in PVOD and now VOD, was the only other Oscar recipient to remain on the lists.

On VOD, Universal’s “Nobody” and the debut of the latest Liam Neeson action film, “The Marksman,” topped the charts along with “Nomadland.” The Bob Odenkirk thriller “Nobody” has been overall the top performer for its initial three weeks of $19.99 home play (with the studio collecting $16 for each rental). It is the sole title to make all four charts, placing #1 at GooglePlay and Spectrum, second and fifth at Fandango and Apple TV. Two million rentals would mean $32 million in studio rentals.
For “The Marksman,” Open Road held to the pre-pandemic 75 day window, grossing a little under $16 million in domestic theaters, before going PVOD. It took #1 at FandangoNow, #2 at Apple TV, and #3 at GooglePlay.
“Nomadland” took the final top spot, placing first at Apple TV at $5.99 after a PVOD release (and while it still runs on Hulu). It is #9 at GooglePlay and #5 at FandangoNow, where it ranks highest among non-pvod titles...

Photo: ‘Percy Vs Goliath’/Amazon ‘Percy Vs Goliath’ is a live adaptation of the true story of a court case involving a small-town farmer and the giant Gmo company, Monsanto. It revolves around Percy Schmeiser, played by Academy Award winner Christopher Walken. Roberta Maxwell (‘Brokeback Mountain’) plays his wife and brings a lot of heart to this movie. The acclaimed actors, Walken and Maxwell, are the ones who truly make this movie a success. However, the formal elements and the inspiration from real life helps elevate this movie. Over the course of the past century, Monsanto discovered a way to farm the American farmer by developing, patenting and supplying genetically modified seeds. Instead of getting its hands dirty in the fields, the company cultivates its yield directly from the land workers, who have virtually no choice but to buy the agrochemical company’s seeds. For the farmers who do it the old-fashioned way — by collecting seeds from last year’s harvest and planting them the next — they risk not only weaker, bug- and weed-susceptible produce, but also being bullied by Monsanto in court.

On paper, the big screen Percy Jackson franchise possessed all of the ingredients to be a success. Chris Columbus had launched Harry Potter, so he felt like a smart choice to direct, while rising talents Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario appealed to the younger demographic and the star-studded supporting cast featured Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman and Rosario Dawson among others. However, Percy Jackson & the Olympians was a by-the-numbers family film that received lukewarm reviews and earned a solid if unspectacular $226 million at the box office.
