The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

The CW announced its fall lineup Thursday, with the return of Superman & Lois, two new game shows based on classic board games and the new scripted entry Joan, a limited series starring Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner, among others.
The lineup comes after Nexstar’s acquisition of the network in 2022, and amid a new focus of becoming profitable and reaching a broader audience. That, in turn, has led to fewer U.S.-produced scripted dramas and a need to be scrappy and cost-conscious, as the linear audience declines and many other broadcast networks, including The CW, are seeing the need to slash budgets.
In light of this, The CW has also leaned into the acquisition of secondary sports rights, game shows and new shows in which the network owns all rights worldwide and therefore can profit off of the programs on streaming, unlike with its legacy shows All American...

The CW is looking to keep acquiring sports rights and is eyeing an expansion on Sundays as well as potential team-ups with other rights holders, President Dennis Miller said in an interview with Deadline.
In an upfronts briefing alongside Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, Miller said the pace of sports rights dealmaking has surprised “everyone, from Perry [Sook, CEO of parent company Nexstar] on down.” Nexstar closed its acquisition of 75% of The CW in 2022, with former 50-50 partners CBS and Warner Bros. each retaining 12.5% positions.

It’s been less than two years since the close of Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW and the network’s primetime slate could not look more different.
In addition to the broadcaster’s shifted focus to sports, unscripted fare and foreign imports/co-productions, The CW will soon be getting into the original TV movie business. In an interview with Variety, network president Dennis Miller and president of entertainment Brad Schwartz revealed that The CW is planning to air its own slate of films (in addition to acquired features) on Sunday nights beginning later this year.
The network already has a Sunday night movie block, which will continue in the fall according to the network’s newly-released fall 2024 schedule. But in addition to airing well-known studio movies, they will be producing movies of their own — as many as ten. The network is prepping a deal with an unnamed TV movie...

Look through The CW‘s newly announced schedule for the Fall 2024-2025 season and you’ll notice that Walker and All American are missing from the lineup. Does this mean the series are canceled? The CW bosses Dennis Miller and Brad Schwartz addressed the shows’ notable omissions. Walker and All American are two of The CW’s most successful shows and some of the only titles to survive the massive programming overhaul the network carried out in recent years. Miller and Schwartz said on May 16, the day of The CW’s upfront presentation during which the network provides programming updates, that decisions about the fate of Walker and All American will be made “soon.” “We didn’t feel any need to rush to meet some Upfront deadline,” Schwartz, the President of Entertainment at The CW, told Deadline. “All American is on the air right now, so we’re seeing how that does.

All American and Walker are two of The CW’s biggest shows.
So, it was somewhat of a surprise that neither show has been handed a renewal and a spot on the network’s fall schedule, which was unveiled this morning.
The CW bosses Dennis Miller and Brad Schwartz explained why this is the case but said that there are ongoing conversations with the studios behind these shows with Schwartz promising that a decision on All American will happen “soon”.
Both shows are expensive and as Deadline has explained before, financials for all three homegrown dramas are challenging, particularly for Walker, which won’t be able to continue unless its very low license fee is raised by the network.
Schwartz, who is President of Entertainment at The CW, told Deadline, “We didn’t feel any need to rush to meet some Upfront deadline. All American is on the air right now,...

The CW has unveiled its slate for the fall 2024-2025 season with returning favorites and new titles, including the expansion of the network’s CW Sports content. Hit scripted series Superman & Lois will return for its final season, and it’s the only pre-Nexstar era show currently on the schedule for next season. Canadian drama series Sullivan’s Crossing is also set to return. This means popular scripted dramas such as Walker, All American, and All American: Homecoming remain in limbo. None of those shows appear on the fall lineup and aren’t confirmed to return at midseason either. “No decisions have been made yet on those titles,” a network representative told TVLine. Instead, the lineup includes new scripted programming, including Joan, starring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, and The Librarians: The Next Chapter, a spinoff of the original fantasy adventure series The Librarians. Taye Diggs is returning to All American but this has many fans confused. Diggs played Billy Baker on the show, and while his return is nice, the fact remains that Billy died on the show. With his death, many fans wonder how his return will occur. More so, what does it mean for the remainder of the season?
Here is a look at Taye Diggs’s return to All American and what it could mean.
Taye Diggs’ Billy Baker Coming Back To All American

This is because Billy Baker died in the series. Billy, a father and football coach, died when he was saving his players after a bus accident in Season 5, Episode 11 (“Time”).

Taye Diggs is returning to All American as Billy Baker! The thing is, though… Billy Baker died. Here’s all there is to know about this mysterious return to The CW sports series. Diggs will return as Billy for a guest-star appearance in All American Season 6, which is currently airing on Mondays on The CW following its May 6 premiere, according to Deadline. Diggs will appear in the episode that airs on Monday, May 20, and the appearance perhaps makes more sense when you realize that this will be the week before All American‘s 100th episode (airing May 27). The father and football coach was last seen in All American Season 5 Episode 11, “Time,” when he died saving his players after their bus got in an accident. While plot details about Diggs’ return are being kept under wraps for now, it will presumably be in some kind of flashback scene (or scenes!). Bringing...

The gambling scandal surrounding LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is already getting the TV series treatment.
Lionsgate Television is in early development on a series focused on the scandal. No writer or network is currently attached to the project, but Scott Delman and Albert Chen are both attached to produce. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television, while Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
Ohtani made headlines the world over when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star pitcher and designated hitter had for years been working with interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, but just one day into the 2024 MLB season, it was revealed that Mizuhara had stolen nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. He was immediately fired and later turned himself in to federal authorities. It was just reported that he has plead guilty to bank and tax fraud charges.

Billy Baker is back — somehow.
Taye Diggs will guest star in the May 20 of the CW’s “All American,” on which he played Billy Baker until the character died in Season 5. It it not yet known how exactly Billy will be incorporated into the episode, which will mark the eighth of the season.
Season 6 of the sports drama, which premiered on April 1 and has released six episodes so far, has followed the remaining “All American” characters as they reel from losing Billy. His son Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) struggles with the pressure of their new NFL draft eligibility while their sister Olivia (Samantha Logan) returns from London to L.A. with hopes to honor Billy’s legacy and their mother Laura (Monét Mazur) finds herself in a new stage of life both personally and as a lawyer.
“All American” is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios in association with Berlanti Productions.

Could The CW have one last Arrowverse crossover up its sleeve? Following remarks made by Tom Cavanagh at a convention over the weekend, TVLine has confirmed that the Flash vet will appear in the series finale of Superman & Lois, appropriately titled “It Went By So Fast.”
Cavanagh originally hoped to direct the pivotal episode, having previously helmed the Season 1 finale and Season 3 premiere, but the gig was already promised to frequent Superman & Lois director Gregory Smith. That’s when showrunner Todd Helbing got an idea, one that will leave fans theorizing for months to come.

Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”
But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.
The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.
Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations.

Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. When Supernatural ended on The CW in 2020, many viewers were left with an insurmountable emotional void (and it wasn't just because of the controversial finale). The main consolation was the then-new sports drama All American, which had been on the air for two years and had become one of the most critically acclaimed shows, earning a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes in its second season. What The CW still lacked, however, were impressive ratings.
That all changed in January 2021 with the release of the neo-Western action drama Walker. Not only was the new series a reboot of the iconic 1993 series starring Chuck Norris, but it was fronted by none other than Supernatural star Jared Padalecki as the legendary Texas Ranger. Each season's ratings shattered all previous records on The CW set by other projects.

Fifth in a series on broadcast network series renewals. As the CW transformation’s under new owners Nexstar continues with the addition of sports as well as acquired scripted series and international co-productions, questions are persisting about the fate of the last remaining dramas from the “old” CW.
With Superman & Lois set to end with its upcoming fourth season in the fall, that leaves flagship All American, spinoff All American: Homecoming and Walker. They all film in the U.S., making them more expensive to produce than Canadian-made dramas and come from former CW co-owners (now minority owners) Warner Bros. (All American franchise) and CBS (Walker).
From what I hear, it would be a very challenging business proposition to have all three series continue on the CW. The sobering realization defers from the brighter outlook shared by the CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz at TCA in February.

Exclusive: This is a rare occurrence in the current strike-impacted broadcast season — a scripted series getting an order for additional episodes. According to sources, the CW’s flagship drama All American is having its current sixth season extended from 13 episode to 15 episodes.
All American’s first five seasons have ranged between 16-20 episodes. With the series picking up just over a year after the end of Season 5, there is a lot of unpack, and the extra episodes would allow to better flesh out the story and build toward a satisfying conclusion.
It also would allow fans to stay in the current world longer as All American‘s characters are preparing for major life changes, with series protagonist Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and potentially Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling) headed to the NFL draft.

Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.
