Rene Russo’s big break in “Major League” came with a minor problem.
The “Major League” writer/director David S. Ward recalled during the “Hollywood Gold” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Russo was “so nervous” both in the audition and on set that she kept using her hands too much in scenes. As a result, Ward opted to “tie down” her hands so Russo could temper her gestures. “Major League” marked Russo’s first role.
“The only problem we had with her was she’s Italian, and when she gets going there’s a lot of the hands, a lot of the talking with the hands, you know?” Ward said. “And they would be flying across her face.”
While filming the 1989 baseball comedy that co-starred Charlie Sheen, Ward told Russo to keep her hands out of her own face.

A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.
Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. If open-minded audiences buy into this transparently trendy gimmick and its melodramatic narrative execution, what feels like a spiritual “Final Destination” spinoff — told by way of an Urban Outfitters’ small gifts display — could very well...

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has been part of many appreciated films in the thirty years he has been part of the film industry. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors such as Ang Lee, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Dan Gilroy. The Zodiac star has been nominated for the Oscars once and the Golden Globes twice.
While the actor has starred with many prominent actors in his films, he seemed to have forgotten that he co-starred with actor Dennis Quaid. On a press tour for his animated film Strange World, Gyllenhaal was shocked to find out that the duo had played father-son before on the film The Day After Tomorrow, which was released almost eighteen years before the interview.

Marvel Studios is back with its first new movie since “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and, should the release schedule hold, its last new movie until the third “Deadpool,” which doesn’t come out until next July.
This being a Marvel movie, there are characters old and new to keep track of, as our heroes jet across the galaxy in an attempt to thwart a massive threat to our world and countless others.
Here’s a complete cast and character guide for “The Marvels.” The only folks we have left out are the ones you definitely don’t want spoiled.
Marvel Studios Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is a former test pilot turned superhero, whose origins were traced in “Captain Marvel” and who was last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” lending a hand in what is now canonically referred to as the Battle of Earth.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making its return to the big screen once again as "The Marvels" is hitting theaters. This not only serves as a sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel," but it's also building on Disney+ shows like "WandaVision" and "Ms. Marvel" with a pair of new heroes joining Carol Danvers to form a new super team. Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani are uniting with Brie Larson as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively. As the catchphrase goes: Higher, further, faster.
It should not be lost on MCU fans that this is the first new team we've been introduced to in some time. If we don't count the trio of Spider-Men at the end of "No Way Home," we would have to go back to "Eternals." That makes this an important film in Phase 5. But is it important enough to have a credits scene? That's what we're here to discuss!

The art world is a cutthroat and judgemental arena. You’re the cat’s pajamas one day, but you’re old news if you take too long to deliver your next masterpiece. Surrounded by snobbery, bitter wine, and diamond-encrusted vultures waiting to pick your talented bones clean, artists endure a lot to remain relevant, and some would even kill for the chance to keep their spot in the public eye. In today’s The Kill Room trailer, a hitman, his boss, and an art dealer concoct a money laundering scheme that accidentally turns an assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation.

As non-industry folk are hopefully learning during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the vast majority of the union's members are not multi-millionaires. Acting is a job, and if you want to maintain a successful career, you can't always be as picky as you'd like to be. You have to audition aggressively, take what's offered, and, as soon as you've completed the gig, start fretting about doing it all over again.
If you're really lucky, you might eventually piece together a body of work that serves as a calling card. At this point, you're a known quantity, someone for whom a writer might create a character. Or perhaps your strengths as a performer will make you a director's first choice for a specific role.
For most actors, it's a long, hard road to this kind of rare success, and once they've attained it, they take nothing for granted. That's why someone like...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid play father and son in Disney’s new animated movie “Strange World,” but it’s not the first time the actors have played family members on screen. Not that Gyllenhaal would remember, apparently. A recent “Strange World” junket interview with Yahoo Entertainment has gone viral for depicting Gyllenhaal seemingly forgetting that Quaid once played his father in “The Day After Tomorrow,” Roland Emmerich’s 2004 disaster movie.
“You and Jake obviously played father and son in ‘The Day After Tomorrow,'” the Yahoo reporter tells Quaid, who was participating in a joint “Strange World” interview with Gyllenhaal.

“It’s the first time we’ve been in the same room together,” Quaid said. “That’s me.”

The Netflix adaptation of The Sandman has been long anticipated both by early fans of the DC comic and by those who have come to enjoy the many wonderful Neil Gaiman televised offerings, from Good Omens to American Gods. But even with the inherent appeal of the classic comic and its creator, there’s something thrilling about recognizing an actor that’s been cast in a key role from other work that they’ve done, especially if it happens to be genre fare that makes them seem particularly suited for their part.
The cast of The Sandman includes many fresh faces that will no doubt become more recognizable as the series gains an audience. But below are some of the more seasoned actors that viewers will instantly recognize and get excited about seeing in their new roles.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” set off fireworks at the box office, collecting 108 million over the weekend. By the time that July 4th rolls around on Monday, the animated family film is expected to reach a sizable 127.9 million.
Based on those estimates, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” will smash the record for the highest film opening over Independence Day, overtaking Paramount’s 2011 blockbuster “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (115.9 million over four days).
Ticket sales for the fifth installment in Universal and Illumination’s popular “Despicable Me” franchise are a comforting sign that family crowds haven’t entirely forgotten about movie theaters. Hollywood had been looking at “Minions: The Rise of Gru” to test the viability of animated flicks on the big screen after moviegoers with young kids — a demographic that’s vital in driving overall box office revenues — had returned only in fits and starts.

Five years ago, Zawe Ashton was considering leaving acting. Then she landed the female lead in “Velvet Buzzsaw.” Her Broadway debut in “Betrayal” followed, as did a part on “The Handmaid’s Tale” and a top-secret role in the “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels.” She can next be seen in Regency-era rom-com “Mr. Malcolm’s List,” based on the novel by Suzanne Allain and directed by Emma Holly Jones. Ashton plays Julia Thistlewaite, who is rejected by Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù’s eligible bachelor Jeremy Malcolm for not meeting the requirements on his list for an ideal bride. Director Emma Holly Jones makes her feature debut with “Mr. Malcolm’s List,” an adaptation of the novel by Suzanne Allain, who also wrote the screenplay. Jones and Allain also collaborated on a short film adaptation of the book in 2019, and the feature film sees many of the stars reprising their roles.
Set in Regency-era England amongst the high-stakes mating rituals of the upper class, “Mr. Malcolm’s List” will obviously call to mind the filmed adaptations of Jane Austen’s work and, of course, the Netflix smash hit series “Bridgerton.”
Following the lead of “Bridgerton” (even though the short film was released before the sexy series swept us off our feet in 2020), Jones’ film boasts a refreshingly diverse cast. These aristocratic families are racially blended, and the color-blind casting enables some wonderful performances.

Someone call 9-1-1, because Jake Gyllenhaal may have just secretly made his directorial debut.
Soon after sister Maggie Gyllenhaal earned several nominations for stepping behind the camera as both writer and director of Oscar-nominated Netflix film “The Lost Daughter,” Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly directed scenes for Michael Bay’s “Ambulance.”
Gyllenhaal stars as a bank robber who teams up with his brother, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, for their largest heist yet. When their plan goes south, the duo end up hijacking an ambulance as a getaway vehicle.
Abdul-Mateen told Esquire that Gyllenhaal “loves the camera,” and even took over as a director for certain scenes.
“There were times when he would take the camera from Mike [Bay] and then you look around and Jake is shooting the scene,” Abdul-Mateen said. “I had never seen anything like that before. I’m curious about those things, but I would never ask the...

Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is one of the most well-regarded comics of all time. 75 issues were released between 1989 and 1996 telling the story of the Endless, an immortal family that personifies basic elements of reality. The focus is on the Lord of Dreams (aka Morpheus/Dream/The Sandman), whose journey takes him across history, through weird dimensions and into hell itself. Many attempts have been made to adapt it over the years, but Netflix has succeeded where everyone else has failed and the show has now been filming for two months.
The strange thing is that we still don’t know much about it. Right now, the only things we can say for certain is that it’s happening, that Gaiman is involved and that the initial season will adapt the first book. What remains a mystery is who’s starring in it, which is intriguing, as Netflix tends to...

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal’s package “The Guilty,” a dramatic thriller based on the Danish drama, “Den Skyldige,” directed by Gustav Moller.
“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the script. The film will be produced by Gyllenhaal and his Nine Stories partner Riva Marker, along with Fuqua and Kat Samick through his Fuqua Films; Scott Greenberg; Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, David Litvak and Svetlana Metkina for Bold Films; and Amet Entertainment’s David Haring.
The film will take place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center, where call operator Joe Bayler (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger. However, he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems.
Annie Marter, Moller and Lina Flint will executive produce with Christian Mercuri and Jon Oakes. Bold Films financed the drama with Amet Entertainment.
Fuqua and Gyllenhaal first collaborated on 2015’s “Southpaw.

Painting and horror movies do occasionally meet and create something great. Recently Velvet Buzzsaw and Bliss have both been well received while covering the art world and blending it with some weird and twisted horror. Legend of the Muse tries to lead down a similar path.
We meet a painter, Adam (Riley Egan) who suddenly gets inspiration when he meets a ‘mythical and deadly spirit from Celtic lore who becomes his muse and lover’. His artwork starts to get noticed but the spirit brings along a whole host of other problems. Mainly that she murders people and leaves Adam to clear up the mess.

Exclusive: As a star cast circles, and a domestic auction wraps up, the Dan Gilroy-directed drama Faster, Cheaper, Better has sold out all of its international territories in pre-buy deals. While studios are in the mix for domestic rights and bidding is in the $15 million range, the sold out international territories put the film in a green light position.
CAA Media Finance arranged the film’s financing and is brokering domestic while FilmNation Entertainment dealt a litany of offshore territorial deals on a sweeping near-future epic that spans 20 years, multiple locales and a myriad of characters. The interwoven stories follow a union foreman, a young entrepreneur, an indoor farm executive and a tech billionaire whose lives are upended when automation and A.I. transform the world as we know it. Ultimately, they all must face what it means to be human.

Dan Gilroy, director of the excellent Nightcrawler, the not-so-great Roman J. Israel, Esq., and the underrated Velvet Buzzsaw, has a new, ambitious-sounding project on the way. Faster, Cheaper, Better is a drama with a story that spans 20 years, focusing on the drastic changes of the global marketplace due to the increased use of artificial intelligence. Deadline has the scoop […]

Dan Gilroy is not the type of filmmaker to tackle the same story more than once. With years of scripts under his belt, it’s been over the past few years with his directorial outings that Gilroy has established himself as one of the most surprising filmmakers around. Going from the bleak, creepy “Nightcrawler” to the legal drama, “Roman J. Israel, Esq” to the art thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw” shows Gilroy is willing to take chances.

Exclusive: Dan Gilroy is set to direct his original script Faster, Cheaper, Better, a character-driven drama that covers an inevitable sweeping changes coming fast that maybe some of us have considered with news reports about how the cross-country trucking industry will be accomplished without human beings in the cars.
The film spans 20 years in multiple locales with a myriad of characters in interwoven stories that follow a union foreman, a young entrepreneur, an indoor farm executive and a tech billionaire whose lives are upended when automation and AI transform the world as we know it. Ultimately, they all must face what it means to be human.
Gilroy’s previous films have been the Jake Gyllenhaal-Rene Russo-starrer Nightcrawler, which brought Gilroy an Oscar nom for Best Original Screenplay, and most recently Roman J. Israel, which brought Denzel Washington an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He also helmed Velvet Buzzsaw for Netflix.

Jake Gyllenhaal seems to be one of the rare actors that are willing to take on any type of project, at any time, no matter how busy his slate. He’s coming off a starring role as the villain Mysterio in last year’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” And in that same year, he also starred in Dan Gilroy’s thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw,” and the kids program “The Sack Lunch Bunch.” Needless to say, Gyllenhaal is a tough actor to pigeon-hole.
