Back in 2015, just as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was cementing his status as one of the world's biggest movie stars, the wrestler-turned-actor starred in the highly successful disaster flick "San Andreas." This was actually one of the movies that proved Johnson could help open a big blockbuster outside of a major franchise. He had earned the reputation of being "franchise Viagra" given what he was able to do for "Fast & Furious," "G.I. Joe," and other established properties.
"San Andreas" sees the infamous San Andreas Fault finally give, which triggers a massive magnitude 9 earthquake in California. Rescue helicopter pilot Raymond Gaines (Johnson) and his estranged wife must then make their way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their daughter. It was a huge success, taking in $474 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. That being the case, Warner Bros. was very quick to announce a squeal back in early 2016. But all these years later,...

The Mattel toy company is making some massive cinematic plays, with their upcoming "Barbie" movie being joined by a possible movie based on their popular "Hot Wheels" line of toy cars. It really seemed like it might finally be happening when Neil Widener and Gavin James (the team behind the upcoming "San Andreas 2" and "Now You See Me 3") were hired to write the script, but today's latest update all but...

Action thriller Gunpowder Milkshake is putting together an impressive cast, headlined by Guardians of the Galaxy’s Karen Gillan.
Gunpowder Milkshake may sound like an ill-conceived idea for a combustible cold dairy drink, but it’s actually an intriguing action thriller – starring Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji actress Karen Gillan – that’s coming to the table with quite the ensemble for what’s shaping up to be a female-fronted assassin mythos.
Studiocanal and The Picture Company are conjuring the big screen project, which will arrive under the direction of internationally debuting helmers in Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, who achieved acclaim in their native Israel with the 2013 Hebrew-language horror film, Big Bad Wolves, and 2010 horror offering Rabies. The directorial duo wrote the Gunpowder script with Ehud Lavski.

With an inclination for destruction, San Andreas director Brad Peyton now turns his attentions to gigantic animals, in blockbuster Rampage. To mark the film’s release we sat down with the talented filmmaker.
Firstly we spoke about the difficulty in achieving a tone whereby the film has various moments of light relief and never doesn’t compromise on the severity of the stakes. Meanwhile, we asked about working with Dwayne Johnson, in what is a successive collaboration between the filmmaker and the world’s leading action hero.
We then discuss the bond we share with animals and how the film gets its heart from this very theme, while we ask briefly about San Andreas 2 and whether fans of the original can expect to see a sequel any time soon.

Though Dwayne Johnson’s Midas touch wasn’t enough to salvage Baywatch from the murky depths of mediocrity, the former WWE superstar continues to be one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, and one glance at his IMDb page will tell you that Johnson has filled his slate all the way into the year 2020.
From Jungle Cruise to Rampage, San Andreas 2 to the as-yet-untitled ninth installment in Universal’s Fast and Furious saga, it’s a casting docket that mixes budding franchise-starters with blockbuster sequels. But the one Dwayne Johnson project that has undoubtedly sparked a sense of enthusiasm among DC fans is Black Adam.

Ever since a big meeting last week week, where DC Cco Geoff Johns sat with megastar Dwayne Johnson and producers Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn to discuss the future of the DC Extended Universe and see where Shazam! fits into things, there's been new buzz building around the film. Johnson has been attached to flick for two years now, having signed on to play Black Adam, and he's now feeling very confident about the project. Something that may very well be adding to his confidence is that Warner Bros. may hire a longtime collaborator of his to helm Shazam!

In the past several months, Dwayne The Rock Johnson has signed on to what seems like dozens of projects. Currently, the actor is on board for San Andreas 2, Jumanji, Doc Savage, Furious 8, Shazam, Baywatch, and Rampage. Of course, these are by no means the only projects he's involved with. Given how in demand the action star is, he likely has plenty of projects on the table. One such project is rumored by Deadline to be Wolf Man.

Brad Peyton will be directing Malignant Man, for producer James Wan...
San Andreas director Brad Peyton will be taking on disasters of a more supernatural kind for his new project. He'll be teaming up with James Wan to co-direct Malignant Man, the Boom! Studios graphic novel about a cancer-patient-turned-mutant-hero which Wan co-wrote and Fox is adapting to film.
Malignant Man is the story of terminal cancer patient Alex Gates, who believes that a malignant tumor is gnawing away at what days he has left until he finds out the even more ghastly truth. What he thought was a tumor is actually an alien parasite that has been unknowingly giving Gates a transfusion of paranormal powers.
Not unlike like the genetically engineered spiders that bite Peter Parker and turn him into a web-slinging superhuman, the alien bloodsucker mutates Gates into something of a hybrid hero with a new lease on life. He is assigned to fight an evil army creeping under the skin of society, as he slowly unravels secrets about his path that lead to the truth about what seems to be a symbiotic connection between him and the parasite.
Wan, who has just come off the second installments of The Conjuring and Insidious, will be producing Malignant Man under his Atomic Monster label. Executive producing with Wan are Peyton and his partner Jeff Fierson, with Boom! Studios’ Adam Yoelin, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie co-producing and Matt Reilly and Ryan Jones overseeing for Fox.
Zak Olkewicz drafted the screenplay. We wait to see just where the film will land on Peyton's busy slate, given that he's also got Rampage, Journey 3 and San Andreas 2 in various stages of development.
Meanwhile, Boom! has been revving up several of its smash graphic novels to take the leap from printed page to big screen. Irredeemable, has just snagged director Adam McKay, and The Empty Man is currently in preproduction.
No release date for Malignant Man has been released yet since it is still in development, but the prognosis looks positive.

The man who it may not be acceptable to call ‘The Rock’ anymore has a whopping 19 films on his slate at the moment (it's gone down, given that Moana is now in cinemas), though, so he may struggle to fit you in. But is there a movie star who's working harder right now? Just check this lot out...
The Definites Baywatch
Currently in post-production, the cinematic Baywatch revival is another example of The Rock being injected in to bring new life to an established franchise (see: Fast & Furious, The Mummy, G.I. Joe and...

This is probably one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood, but after a good couple months of teasing, Dwayne Johnson has officially confirmed that he's attached to star as the titular character of Shane Black's upcoming film, Doc Savage.
As per usual, the Rock took to Instagram to make this reveal.

In addition to a photo of him with director Shane Black -- along with writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry and producer Hiram Garcia -- Johnson gave fans an idea of what to expect from the film.
Here's what the caption read:

Dwayne Johnson's schedule looks pretty busy for the next few years - he recently wrapped "Baywatch" and the second season of HBO's "Ballers," he's currently at work on "Fast and Furious 8," and already has numerous other projects in the works including "Jumanji," "Shazam," "San Andreas 2," "Rampage," "Doc Savage" and more.
Now it looks like the actor may add another film to his slate - a "Fast & Furious" spinoff centering on his character Luke Hobbs. Hobbs, who joined the franchise in 2011's "Fast Five," has quickly become a franchise favorite.
Johnson's producing partner Hiram Garcia spoke with ComicBook.com this week and says that there have always been talks about a Hobbs spinoff, but the main challenge to doing it has been scheduling:
"I think there's always been conversations for that. The scheduling of it all is a challenge but there are always talks about a potential spinoff movie...

Universal wants a Robert Ludlum cinematic universe - and it's kicking off with The Rock in The Janson Directive.
Here’s another new cinematic universe to add to the list of those that Hollywood studios are putting together, this time based around the works of late author Robert Ludlum.
It’s being kickstarted with Universal and Dwayne Johnson (surely the busiest man in Hollywood) coming together for The Janson Directive, a movie that’s been in the works for around five years now.
The Amazing Spider-Man’s James Vanderbilt is penning the screenplay to this one, and he’s going to be one of the team putting together a collection of movies based on Robert Ludlum’s writing. Ludlum penned the Jason Bourne stories, of course, and his spy thrillers have sold over 300 million copies worldwide.
Whether Dwayne Johnson will fit into future movies remains to be seen.

Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) has wanted to make a movie based on the pulp hero Doc Savage for a long time, and it sounds like he'll finally start rolling on that sometime next year. At one point Chris Hemsworth was being eyed for the title role — a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and musician all in one, not unlike Buckaroo Banzai — but in recent months, Black has talked about how he now has his sights set on Dwayne Johnson as his potential star.
In an Instagram post yesterday, Johnson confirmed his involvement with the project:
Finding our anchor. When I'm shooting on location I always need a space where I can work and keep building the enterprise. Here in Georgia this has been my space for months now. Keepin' it country. Every film, TV show, partnership and project...

Last month came the news that Dwayne Johnson will both star in and produce a remake of the family adventure tale "Jumanji" for Sony Pictures. Production is slated to begin this Fall.
Today, Johnson took to his Instagram page once again today - revealing a new photo of himself reading the original book by Chris Van Allsburg and offered new details about the project which will honor original star Robin Williams.
"And the #Jumanji magic begins. Excellent meeting with our director Jake Kasdan, producer Matt Tolmach, and our @SevenBucksProd team to work on our new re-imagining of this amazing story. I felt like in order to craft something cool we should begin where it all started.
Award winning writer Chris Van Allsburg's source material of Jumanji. Chris also wrote The Polar Express (later adapted by Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks) and has a very special & magical way of storytelling.

In accordance with previous reports, it’s been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson has been tapped to headline Sony’s Jumanji remake. However, there’s no word of his Central Intelligence co-star Kevin Hart closing a deal at this time.
Word of Johnson’s addition to the embryonic overhaul comes via the actor’s ever-active Instagram – which also brought word of Baywatch enlisting Pamela Anderson earlier today – revealing that Johnson’s Seven Bucks production banner will help shepherd Jumanji into development, with plans in place to start shooting in fall of this year.
Expect casting to hit up over the next few months, then, with producer Matt Tolmach and director Jake Kasdan also on board to steer the project from behind the scenes. Perhaps in an effort to allay fears that a Jumanji reboot is arguably unnecessary, Johnson noted that the team “promises to deliver something cool and special.. and not...

The latest trailer for Shane Black's new detective comedy The Nice Guys just came out, and to mark the occasion, Thrillist spoke with Black about the trailer and a few of his upcoming projects, two of which are of particular interest to me (and hopefully to you).
First up is the Predator reboot that he's writing (with Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker) and directing. Thrillist Entertainment Editor Matt Patches provides some good context in his question, so I'll include that along with Black's response:
You're going to write and direct a new Predator movie, 30 years after Fox asked you to punch up the script for the original movie and you declined. Then the studio cast you in a role, hoping you'd rewrite the script, and you still refused. How does the guy who kept saying no wind up taking over the franchise? They called me and I was reluctant.

DC's answer to Marvel's Deadpool, Lobo, was thought to be long dead. However, that has all changed as they have now hired a writer to handle the Lobo movie! Come inside to find out who!
Ever since Deadpool was unleashed to the world, back in February, the superhero landscape has changed. In fact, Deadpool is currently over $710 million, globally. This is leading to more and more studios clamoring for R-rated superhero films. With the high demand comes greenlights for comic book characters that, otherwise, wouldn't even be considered. Enter DC's equivalent to Deadpool, Lobo.
Lobo had actually been in the works, a few years ago. They had a director in Brad Peyton (San Andreas) but they never started working on the project. Today that changed when DC announced that they hired Pan and Wonder Woman screenwriter, Jason Fuchs, to write a screenplay for Lobo, from the ground up.

The seemingly stalled movie based on the DC Comics character Lobo seems to be back on with The Wrap reporting that screenwriter Jason Fuchs has been set to pen the script.
Fuchs, the writer behind the upcoming "Wonder Woman" movie starring Gal Gadot, will reportedly start over from scratch with his script about the nearly indestructible bounty hunter who drives a space-faring motorcycle across the cosmos.
Attempts have been made in recent years to develop a film based on the property, at last word "San Andreas" helmer Brad Peyton had signed on to direct. That was four years ago, no word as yet if that's still the case but his commitments to "San Andreas 2" and "Rampage" would seemingly prevent that.
The likely cause of this reinvigoration of the film is the success of "Deadpool" - another anti-hero who breaks the fourth wall and has a strong cult following.

Alexandra Daddario reckons San Andreas 2 is still likely - but Dwayne Johnson's schedule is a problem...
We've not heard anything about the mooted San Andreas 2 now since the start of 2016. But, some 17 months after the last update, its co-star - Alexandra Daddario - has held the door ajar a little for the project.
In a new interview with Collider, that's well worth a read, she was asked if she though the sequel would happen. Bottom line: it's likely, but depends on Dwayne Johnson's schedule.
"If I had to bet money on it, I’d say yes", she told the site, "but it’s still in the pre-production stage of putting it together. You never know with Dwayne Johnson’s schedule. He’s a very busy man. But that movie did very well, and it did very well overseas, so I can see them...

A sequel to 2015’s “San Andreas” is in the works at New Line, TheWrap has learned. Neil Widener and Gavin James will write the script for the film. “San Andreas” followed rescue-chopper pilot Raymond Gaines (Dwayne Johnson) as he tried to save his family from the mass destruction of a gigantic earthquake that hit California. The disaster movie grossed over $473 million worldwide last year. Johnson is set to return for the sequel, as is producer Beau Flynn and director Brad Peyton. Carla Gugino and Alexandra Daddario, who played Johnson’s wife and daughter in the first film, respectively, are also expected.
