For many viewers, the scenes hardest to take in viral streaming cringefest “Baby Reindeer” weren’t the ones of overt stalking or abuse, but those depicting the Doa stand-up comedy of Richard Gadd’s alter ego — moments whose flop-sweating public failure seemed to stretch into tortuous infinity. Canadian feature “I Used to Be Funny” likewise hinges on a paralyzing intersection between stand-up, anxiety and depression. Mercifully, however, here it’s not the protagonist’s stage act that is the cause of massive self-doubt. Instead, it’s a host of external problems that conspire to make her incapable of performing …as well as eating, sleeping and leaving her apartment.

Exclusive: WME has signed Judd Apatow, the prolific hyphenate responsible for a ton of comedy box office and the launch of many stars and filmmakers in that space.
As Deadline exclusively revealed, Apatow ended a 30-year relationship with UTA, and took meetings with the other majors before deciding his next chapter will be with WME. It’s a coup for the agency, which recently signed Kevin Hart and Ben Stiller.
Apatow remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. Apatow’s successes in the comedy space range from Freaks and Geeks and the HBO series Girls to films like Talladega Nights, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Trainwreck, the Anchorman films, Bridesmaids, Step Brothers, Superbad, Knocked Up, Begin Again, Funny People, The Big Sick, The King of Staten Island, Bros, Pineapple Express and so many others. "Star Trek" has just added a new captain to Starfleet's prestigious ranks, and she's definitely worthy of wearing the uniform. Even as the franchise is undergoing some change on the television side of things, as "Discovery" speeds headlong towards its last couple of episodes in its final season and the animated "Lower Decks" is similarly coming to a close, fans will have another new series to look forward to -- and no less than an Oscar-winning actor is now attached as the lead.
In a tweet posted earlier today from the official account, Paramount announced that "Starfleet Academy" has found its captain in Holly Hunter. Her character will actually serve as both "captain and chancellor" for the new Paramount+ streaming series, which was first revealed to be in the works back in March of 2023 and is set to depict the famous space-faring school for new Starfleet officers-in-training. Today, Paramount+ announced that Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy.
The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the galaxy’s most legendary places. Produced by CBS Studios, it will begin production later this summer.
“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across-the-board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

Exclusive: Writer-director-producer Judd Apatow has left UTA, ending one of the most tenured relationships with a major filmmaker and a major agency.
Apatow spent 30 years at the agency, 20 of them with David Kramer, and he remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. These long relationships often come to a close, usually when the client wants to shake things up at a moment when it is hard, particularly in the comedy space. It was amicable, and I hear he’ll be meeting with CAA and WME.
But this is a moment to tip the hat at how the agency helped Apatow build his brand, and how Apatow’s prolific successes were a major part of building UTA. There aren’t many tenured relationships that led to as much success as Apatow has had and how many careers he has launched in that time. That goes from...

"Only Murders in the Building" has earned pretty much universal acclaim for its first three seasons, including an 8 out of 10 /Film review from Josh Spiegel for season 3. It's also been responsible for Meryl Streep's return to TV, a weirdly catchy original Steve Martin tune (or two), and an official companion podcast called "Only Murders in the Pod." Plus, of course, the show has won four Primetime Emmys and counting. So what's next for the series? In a word: Hollywood.
After three seasons spent solving murders in their unusually deadly New York City apartment building, amateur sleuths Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) are making a great escape. While last season of the zany Hulu mystery series saw the trio of podcast hosts turned frequent murder suspects unmask Ben Glenroy's (Paul Rudd) killer and seemingly get embroiled in another East Coast death, the first teaser for...

Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw The TV Glow,” out in limited theaters now, is about teenagers Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Owen (Justice Smith), who bond over a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”-style TV show, “The Pink Opaque.” As they continue to get more into the lore of the television show, the edges blur between the reality of their lives and “The Pink Opaque.”
Schoenbrun has described “Buffy” as a pivotal show for them while they were growing up, so creating their version of that felt like giving their 13-year-old self a gift. So getting “The Pink Opaque” just right was monumental.
The premise of “The Pink Opaque,” like most ’90s shows, is perfectly silly and immediately nostalgic. Isabel (Helena Howard) and Tara (Snail Mail’s Lindsay Jordan) meet at summer camp and realize they have an ancient, psychic connection. When camp ends, the two are able to meet on a...

Romance is complicated. The meshing together of two or more people isn’t designed to be a smooth process and art has reflected that for generations, most recently in the new Amazon MGM rom-com “The Idea of You”. In honor of the film dropping on Prime Video, IndieWire has compiled a list of the best age-gap romance films to enjoy after watching Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine’s jaunt within the genre. From the best-selling novel by Robinne Lee, “The Idea of You” follows a 40-year-old gallery owner and divorceé, who, after escorting her daughter to Coachella, ends up in a whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of a famous boy band. The book was adapted for the screen by Michael Showalter, as well as Jennifer Westfeldt, who’s dabbled in complicated romances in the past with films like “Kissing Jessica Stein” and “Friends With Kids”.

The Idea of You starts like any other romance movie: A boy and girl meet, fall in love, and maybe have a swoon-worthy ending. But what happens when the girl is a 40-year-old woman, the boy is a 24-year-old boy band member, and fame and public scrutiny bring obstacles to the journey that might’ve been leading to a happy ending?
The Idea of You centers on 40-year-old art gallery owner Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) who, after being forced to take her daughter and friends to Coachella after her ex-husband bails on the plans, unexpectedly meets Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), British front man to the uber-popular boy band August Moon. Despite Solène being unfazed by the pandemonium and allure of the young singers, their meet-cute eventually turns into a steamy romance, but not without the hiccups of fame and attention that come as a result.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

“You’re not even a person till you’re 30,” says a friend to Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway), a single woman celebrating her 40th birthday. “Then you spend the next 10 years figuring out what kind of person you want to be.” In The Idea of You, adapted from the Robinne Lee romance novel that was ostensibly based on fan fiction about erstwhile One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles, age is only a problem insomuch as other people make it one, rooting its romantic complications in the somehow still revolutionary idea that people (and women specifically) grow and bloom throughout every phase of life.

Robinne Lee’s 2017 debut novel “The Idea of You” followed an almost 40-year-old woman who enters a romance with the star of a giant boyband sensation. The book was a giant hit, in no small part due to fans viewing one of the main characters as a stand-in for One Direction’s Harry Styles. Now comes a movie adaptation from the director of “The Big Sick,” which translates the novel while making enough changes to improve upon the source material, including a fantastic ending that puts a perfect bow on the story.

Rom-coms are a staple of cinema and have been for decades. Right alongside action movies and horror flicks, these tales of romance infused with humor are often there to help anchor any given year at the movies. Yet, they are often viewed as nothing more than popcorn movies; the cinematic equivalent of empty calories. Director Michael Showalter's "The Idea of You" is here to remind us that these movies can be so much more than that. At their best, they can be illuminating experiences that shed meaningful light on the human condition. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by Anne Hathaway and a star-making turn for Nicholas Galitzine, this is the genre at its best.

When you’re 10, it sounds like every line your favorite boy band sings is being aimed directly at you. Somewhere along the way, the illusion shatters. Teenagers are smarter than we give them credit for, and they eventually figure out how parasocial relationships operate: Basically, the fans do all the work, saving up for concert tickets and glitter-painting their idols’ names on their notebooks, while the lab-tested singers soak up all the love … and the allowance money. But what if, instead of the feelings flowing in one direction, a pop star fell hard for one of his followers? Or her mom?

The Idea of You, the new romantic comedy from Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), begins like many of the best in its genre: a meet-cute so silly it endears.
This one happens in a trailer that Solene (a delightful Anne Hathaway) confuses for a restroom during Coachella. The almost-40-year-old divorcée wasn’t supposed to be in the desert surrounded by neon-clad adolescents shrieking at the top of their lungs. If Solene had it her way, she would be on a solo camping trip somewhere in the woods with only her thoughts. But her ex-husband Daniel (Reid Scott) bailed on his plan to take their 16-year-old daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin) and her friends to see an old favorite band August Moon, an international group modeled after One Direction. Now, Solene is stuck navigating a sea of youthful energy and looking for a place to pee.
With bladder relief comes company.

At the first moment of physical contact between Anne Hathway and Nicholas Galitzine in “The Idea of You” — a light touch of the hands — the crowd at the film’s SXSW world premiere completely lost it. By the time the actors were kissing, the gasps, shrieks and applause were deafening.
Hathaway was overcome with emotion as she took the stage for a post-screening Q&a at Austin’s Paramount Theater.
“I can’t talk,” she said to the audience, in tears. “I love you!” a fan called out, and Hathaway responded, “I love you so much. You have no idea the gift that you’ve just given us with your responsiveness, by being so connected to every little nuance in this. I will never forget this screening.”

There are meet cutes, and there are meet cutes. And then there is the ballad of Solène Marchand and Hayes Campbell: the fortysomething single mother chaperoning her daughter at this year’s Coachella and the boy band superstar who’s headlining the show. Such are the twists and quirks of the heart, as well as The Idea of You, a beloved romance novel by Robinne Lee turned one of the buzziest new romantic dramas at this year’s fest.

A narrative trifurcated across decades and generations, Fawzia Mizra’s “The Queen of My Dreams” follows a young Pakistani Canadian coming to terms with her upbringing. It hits all the familiar beats of a first-generation South Asian story and, despite its novel queer bent and tongue-in-cheek casting, it does little to separate itself, thematically or stylistically, from a now repetitive form of “third culture” storytelling.
The sound of a slide projector yanks the film’s opening images into place, as though it were a slideshow of family memories. The year is 1999. The place is Toronto. Azra is a wannabe actress — a profession of which her mother disapproves. She lives with her white, female “roommate” (her parents are none the wiser), to whom she excitedly shows the 1969 Hindi classic “Aradhana” starring Sharmila Tagore. “The Queen of My Dreams” is an English translation of the title of that movie’s most famous song,...

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.” Our odds currently indicate that “Anatomy of a Fall” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Holdovers” (37/10), “Past Lives” (9/2), “Maestro” (9/2), and “May December” (9/2).
Of the eight individual writers behind these five films, only Josh Singer (“Maestro”) has earned recognition in this category before. Indeed, he is looking to go two-for-two here after succeeding on his 2016 bid for “Spotlight,” which he co-wrote with its director, Tom McCarthy. Coincidentally, he shares his new nomination with the director of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper, who also has a personal stake in the Best Picture and Best Actor races as a producer and star of the same film.

While its age gap is nowhere near that of tabloidy awards contender May December, The Idea Of You still features romantic partners who are apart in years. The (admittedly very loose) inspiration here is Harry Styles' dating life and pop megastardom as Anne Hathaway's 40-something single mother stars dating 24-year-old singer Hayes Campbell and much drama ensues. Check out the first trailer:
Drawn from Robinne Lee's bestseller, The Idea Of You introduces us to Solène (Hathaway), who strikes up an unexpected love connection with Hayes (Galitzine), the scream-generating, hunksome front man of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. Following a chance encounter at dusty annual Stateside music fest Coachella (where Hayes' band is among the headliners and Solène is chaperoning her teenage daughter's trip to the event), there is an undeniable spark between the pair.

Spring is right around the corner (thank god for that), which means romance will be in the air! What better way to celebrate than by watching the trailer for a movie where Anne Hathaway plays a hot mom who falls in love with a younger pop star? In "The Idea of You," Hathaway is a woman who takes her teen daughter to Coachella. I know, I know — that sounds like a fate worse than death. But don't worry — there's love to be had! Because while at the extremely hip music festival, Hathaway's character strikes up a romance with a 20-something guy who happens to be the lead singer of a pop boyband.
It sounds a little bit like fanfiction, but the new film is actually based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, who based the pop singer character in part on Harry Styles. The new trailer...

Something strange is happening in the neighborhood. Time to call the Ghostbusters. Sony has just released the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. While it’s been addressed in past trailers and TV spots that this new evil entity that is taking over New York City can scare people to death, and there’s been a mention of a “ghost army,” this final trailer emphasizes that every ghost that the Ghostbusters have ever caught will be unleashed. This provides an opportunity for the film to showcase old fan favorites as well as make references to the wild, unique ghosts of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and toy line. The notion of “every ghost they ever caught” sounds like an ultimate final conflict, but director Gil Kenan has stated that he already has ideas for sequels beyond Frozen Empire.

In a review, Rolling Stone warned moviegoers that the 2021 Marvel movie Eternals “will bore you to death.” Moviegoers were somewhat kinder, giving the picture a solid C+, or 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and they spent close to $165 million domestically to see it, according to The Numbers. But the stigma of being associated with one of the meh-est Marvel movies weighed heavily on one of its stars, Kumail Nanjiani, who entered therapy when critics turned on it.

Michael Showalter’s “The Idea of You” will close out this year’s South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. The film stars Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine and centers on Solène, a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet.
Showalter is a familiar face at the Austin-based SXSW, having debuted or screened numerous projects including “Hello My Name Is Doris,” which won the Audience Award in 2015, and “The Big Sick,” which won the Audience Award in 2017. He also presented episodes from his TV series “Search Party,” and had planned to debut his 2020 rom-com “The Lovebirds” at the festival, only to have those plans scuttled by the Covid pandemic.
In “The Idea of You,” Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute.
