When we talk about renowned manga series in the otaku community many popular names come to our mind. The choices are vast as fans would say names of popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Demon Slayer, and many more. However, Akutami-san’s and Oda-Sensei’s work remains on top of the charts, both mangas have broken numerous records in 2023.
A still from Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen
Jjk claimed the title of #1 anime as it was immensely popular among its viewers, while Op kept its viewers hooked on the series as the manga progressed into one of its final arcs. Despite immense popularity, neither of the two titles claimed the spot of the most-selling manga in 2023. Much to the surprise of the fans of both series, the spot was claimed by Muneyuki Kaneshiro’s Blue Lock, and the difference between their sales is immense.

In an unprecedented move, 21 unions as well as leading figures from the Italian cinema industry joined forces on Friday (April 5) to voice their concerns about challenges in accessing public funding that have brought film and high-end TV production to a standstill in the country.
“Never have I seen in my long career a unity such as this in the Italian industry,” veteran director Marco Bellocchio said on stage at a crowded event that filled several screening rooms of the Cinema Adriano in Rome. Directors such as Paolo Sorrentino, Paolo Virzì and Fabrizio Gifuni also attended, alongside several actors and producers.

Thea Sharrock’s wonderfully sweary Wicked Little Letters is confirmed to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray next month. More here.
Wicked Little Letters, Thea Sharrock’s hilariously sweary real-life drama, is heading to DVD and Blu-Ray. No 4K Uhd for this one, it seems. The film will be available 13th May.
The film is also out now to buy and rent digitally, but if you’re a physical media type of person, you can pre-order your copy, in your chosen format, right here.
The film follows the war between two neighbours. Olivia Colman’s Edith has been receiving really nasty poison-pen letters that call her all kinds of unsavoury names. Edith is convinced that her neighbour Rose is behind them. After all, Rose has a potty mouth and is a rowdy single mother.
In our review, we said this of the film: “Sharrock treads the thin line between drama and comedy well,...

Netflix is at or near the top of both Nielsen and Luminate’s streaming rankings every week, but achieved that with some titles that differ from its usual fare during the March 29-April 3 viewing window.
As expected, “3 Body Problem” remained the most-watched streaming original series of the week per Luminate with 964.1 million minutes watched (an estimated 3.6 million views) — unsurprising, as the title is the follow-up from “Game of Thrones” helmers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who created the show alongside Alexander Woo.
But right behind it was “Testament: The Story of Moses,” a biblical series that Netflix calls a “docudrama” that landed on the streamer in time for Easter weekend. Though the project differs from the content typically prioritized by Netflix (and most streamers) it reached a strong 707.8 million minutes watched. Divided by the series’ just over 4-hour runtime, that translates to an estimated 2.8 million views.

What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.
One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.
“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,...

Amusing, uplifting, and about as sugary and teeth-sabotaging as caramelized popcorn, The Beautiful Game celebrates the healing power of team sports for those who might feel pushed to society’s margins by misfortune or choice. Although prefaced with the vague assurance that it’s based on true stories, this comedy-drama by eminent British screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce (The Railway Man) and directed by Thea Sharrock (Wicked Little Letters) is a tidily assembled, happy-ending-hewing narrative package that revolves mostly around the fortunes of a half dozen unhoused men, competing for England in the Homeless World Cup.
Bill Nighy stars as the team’s manager, a former scout for major London football club West Ham, who takes the team to Rome, where he must also accommodate each player’s foibles and faults, including the arrogance of star striker Vinnie (Micheal Ward, of Empire of Light). After a short theatrical run in the U.

Thea Sharrock’s The Beautiful Game is a story about second chances and redemption. As oblivious as I can be about things, I had no clue that the Homeless World Cup was a thing; however, I must admit that it surely is an extremely noble cause. The movie shows that this initiative is not just about letting talented players from underprivileged backgrounds represent their countries in a global tournament. The Homeless World Cup selects people based on their potential. People who are desperate for a second chance in life. For people who have had a troubled past, it gives them the opportunity for redemption and the opportunity to take responsibility so that they can turn their lives around. Homelessness is a serious social issue in practically every country around the world. Part of the reason why homelessness is still a raging issue is because of the barriers that we have created in society.

The Beautiful Game is a movie directed by Thea Sharrock starring Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward.
You know those movies that use sports as an excuse to create a simple plot that suspiciously seems like a thousand others you’ve seen before? “The Beautiful Game” is one of those films. It sports a good vibe that makes our lives a tad more pleasing, thanks to a simple script that’s based on an idea already rolling for many other movies.
This English version stars Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward, though we’re not sure if they can propel this story of sports and friendship into a blockbuster.
Or something that could slightly surprise you.

British actor Sheyi Cole has a prominent role in Thea Sharrock’s Netflix original film “The Beautiful Game.”
The film revolves around the Homeless World Cup, an annual soccer tournament bringing together displaced or dispossessed players from nearly 50 countries, playing not merely for a trophy but for a second shot at life. Cole plays Jason, a would-be ladies’ man given a sharp #MeToo education when he inappropriately comes onto sparky Mexican-American player Rosita (Cristina Rodio).
“One thing that was great about Thea is that she was so hands on – any concerns that we had, she was willing to have conversations and was able to alleviate any concerns that we essentially had, surrounding that conversation with Jason,” Cole told Variety. “I think what she really wanted to highlight was Jason’s naivety and innocence. And the lack of role models that he had in his life. So although Jason does make grave mistakes,...

The Beautiful Game by Thea Sharrock is available on Netflix now. The movie depicts the lives of homeless people and the adversities they face. As a sports drama film filled with characters wrestling with their demons, The Beautiful Game shows how the Homeless World Cup, as an initiative, works to raise awareness about homelessness, a raging social issue in almost every country in the world. But again, the point isn’t just to raise awareness. By giving this opportunity to people who have lost hope in themselves, this initiative intends to uplift these people and reinstate them in a society where they can function for their renewed self-esteem. The Homeless World Cup helps people believe in themselves again. The film surely sticks close to reality and pays homage to all those people around the world suffering without a roof above their heads. It presents an array of different characters who...

Coming off a well-deserved first-ever Oscar nomination, Bill Nighy has a new worthwhile movie to add to his highly impressive filmography. The Beautiful Game is, on its surface, another well-worn story of a ragtag team of misfits coming together for validation not just in their football (i.e. soccer) skills but, more importantly, in their lives. And even though we have seen countless underdog stories like this one set on a playing field, we actually haven’t seen one quite like this in terms of the welcome spotlight it puts on the homeless population among us. The timing is particularly pertinent as many major cities seem to a war going on with the homeless, a complete lack of empathy toward what gets a person to this point in life and a solution for lifting them out of it.

The Beautiful Game: Cast, Release Date, Photos and Plot of Sports Drama About the Homeless World Cup
Get ready for kickoff. Bill Nighy is starring in a new sports drama based on the Homeless World Cup, a real-life football (that’s soccer to Americans) tournament that spotlights unhoused athletes from around the world. Produced by Hwc ambassador (and Oscar nominee) Colin Farrell and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Ben Knight with Anita Overland, The Beautiful Game tells the story of the English team and their coach (played by Nighy) as they prepare for the global tournament.
In a new clip from the film, Mal explains the Homeless World Cup to Vinny, and we catch a glimpse of the many talented players who will be competing in Rome. “Every player has a story to tell,” Mal says. “Heartbreaking, unexpected, thrilling stories. And they tell those stories in one great universal language. And that’s football.”
The Homeless World Cup has been around since 2001, representing nearly 70 countries.

An assortment of familiar life-as-sport metaphors get a healthy workout in “The Beautiful Game,” a story of underdog athletes for whom winning may not be everything, though it’s a welcome distraction from greater obstacles. For many viewers, Thea Sharrock’s cheery Netflix entertainment may serve as an introduction to the real-life event on which it’s based: the Homeless World Cup, an annual soccer tournament bringing together displaced or dispossessed players from nearly 50 countries, playing not merely for a trophy but for a second shot at life. As a premise for an inspirational sports drama, that’s close to unbeatable, and no amount of rote writing in Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s patchy script can dim the film’s lump-in-the-throat effectiveness.
Though drawn from the stories of a range of Homeless World Cup players, the film ultimately centers a single team — England, of course — from the event’s international tapestry, and...

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! For a while, it seemed as though Netflix’s sole focus was to become the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With the releases of “Maestro,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Roma,” “Mudbound,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and others, many in entertainment felt that the streaming service that disrupted the entire industry was trying to backdoor its way into the good graces of Hollywood by releasing prestige pictures in theaters. Then, as the entire movie theater business was still trying to get back on its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns, Netflix put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” into theaters — for an admittedly limited amount of time. However, it appears that the days of the world’s largest streamer making massive efforts to release its films in cinemas might be over.

It all started with music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux’s dream of working with pop music maestro Max Martin for an original Ted Lasso song — and ended with an emotional tearjerker that was so good Jason Sudeikis wrote a specific scene for the tune in the season three finale of the Apple TV+ comedy. Sudeikis even had a tiny role in changing one of the song’s lyrics (more on that later).
This is the story behind Ted Lasso‘s Emmy-nominated track “A Beautiful Game,” performed by Ed Sheeran and written by Sheeran, Martin and Foy Vance.
A Song Is Born
When Von Pervieux received the go-ahead from Ted Lasso producers to pursue an original song by Martin for the series, he had to pitch the five-time Grammy-winning producer, who has launched 25 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “He has always been one of the best producers of all time.
