Stand-up comedian Kenny DeForest, who was a fixture of the Brooklyn comedy scene and appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show with James Corden and the Pete Holmes-helmed HBO series Crashing, died on Wednesday, Dec. 13. He was 37.
On Friday, Dec. 8, DeForest was on a rented bicycle at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Sterling Place in Prospect Park when he hit an unoccupied parked car, a New York City Police Department spokesperson told NBC News.
He was then taken to Kings County Hospital, where he underwent neurological surgery to remove a piece of his skull in order to relieve pressure from cranial bleeding.
Ryan Beck, a fellow comic and close friend of DeForest’s, organized a GoFundMe amid the late comedian’s hospitalization. In the most recent update, Beck noted that DeForest’s final moments “included some of his favorite songs, stories of his childhood,...

The claustrophobic second episode of Killing Eve's new season is even better than the premiere
This Killing Eve review contains spoilers.
Killing Even Season 2 Episode 2
Episode 2 of Killing Eve manages to do a rare thing: it makes Villanelle seem weak and vulnerable. The artfully claustrophobic episode is even more intense than the premiere, the tension tightly coiled as both Eve and Villanelle encounter new territory and the line between who is cat and who is mouse becomes ever blurrier.
Like a drawn-out reversal of the cold open of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pilot, “Nice and Neat” knows we’re operating under the impression that Villanelle is beyond deadly, and any man in her path is unfortunate to find himself there. No amount of injury, illness, or social expectations could make Villanelle a victim – could they?
And therein lies the genius of this episode. The deadliest woman in the world is still a woman.

Exclusive: Shunori Ramanthan and Victor Slezak have joined the cast of the Michael Keaton-starrer What Is Life Worth. The true-life biographical drama is directed by The Kindergarten Teacher‘s Sara Colangelo and also stars Stanley Tucci. Principal photography is set to begin next month in New York.
The Black List script from Max Borenstein is based on Kenneth Feinberg’s memoir. It’s described as being in the vein of Erin Brockovich and the Oscar-winning Keaton- and Tucci-starrer Spotlight. The story centers on Feinberg, a powerful DC insider lawyer put in charge of the 9/11 Fund. In almost three years of pro bono work on the case, Feinberg fought off the cynicism, bureaucracy and politics associated with administering government funds to victims’ families — and in doing so, discovered what life is worth.

Hollywood is paying close attention to what HBO’s new owners will do with the network now that Richard Plepler’s long run of hits, awards and acclaim is coming to a close.
“HBO is the gold standard. I hope they stick with quality not quantity,” said Judd Apatow, whose shows “Girls” and “Crashing” are among HBO’s critical darlings. “Their choices over the next few days and weeks will tell us a lot about the direction they are choosing to go in.”
Plelper announced Thursday that he will exit the network where he greenlit successes like “Veep” and “Game of Thrones.” HBO is now the property of At&T, overseen by WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey, who has called on HBO to substantially increase subscriptions and the amount of time that viewers spend watching.

We spoke with executive producer and director Judd Apatow about his career and Crashing Season 3.
In his critically acclaimed 2018 Netflix special, “The Return,” Judd Apatow fondly recalled his stand-up comedy roots. He worked as a teenager in East Side Comedy Club in Long Island where he saw the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy perform. The Huntington, Long Island club, which shuttered in 1995, became a home away from home for Apatow during a time when his parents were going through marital trouble. He joked in the special that he returned to stand-up comedy to “lower his salary and self-esteem,” but a throughline of Apatow’s career has been a fascination with the plight of the stand-up comic, from his film Funny People, to his work with Pete Holmes on Crashing, and the recent HBO documentary on the late Gary Shandling which he executive produced.

Freeform has put into development The Girlfriend, from writer-actress-comedian Jamie Lee, director James Griffiths and ABC Signature Studios.
Written by Lee, The Girlfriend is a new take on a rom-com. It revolves around Crystal Chase — a 30-something toiling away in Bakersfield, California — whose life is turned upside down when she finally meets “the one”… Too bad “the one” is the prime suspect in his wife’s mysterious disappearance. This is a subversive romantic comedy about a woman struggling with her soul as she evolves from a local nobody into the nationally infamous “girlfriend.”
It’s hard not to see spot parallels between The Girlfriend and headline-making “other women” such as Scott Petterson’s ex-girlfriend Amber Frey and the mistress of “killer dad” Chris Watts who was recently thrown into the spotlight after Watts’ wife and children went missing.
Lee will write the pilot script and will co-executive produce.

Pete tastes success in Crashing Season 3, but can he sustain it?
Fictional Pete (or “Fp” as real Pete Holmes calls him) is still looking for his “big break.” What exactly constitutes a “big break” is all relative in the stand-up world. Through two seasons of Crashing, Pete has earned the respect of his peers as he hustled through the club scene, has been reluctantly championed by the likes of Artie Lange, Bill Burr, and Jeff Ross to name a few, and landed a college tour, though it fractured his relationship with his girlfriend and fellow comic Ali (Jamie Lee). Crashing Season 3 begins with a montage of Pete acing his college tour, which gives the comedian a budding ego.
“There are people that I know that they don't get ‘breaks,’ they get like, sprains,” Holmes tells Den of Geek of the roller coaster stand-up circuit. “They haven't broken into show business,...

Join our newsletter to get more stories like this Crashing on HBO has done a very clever thing. Showrunner Judd Apatow has kicked up the volume in Pete Holmes’ on-screen character’s life and created an excellent Season 3. Pete’s less of a comedic bumbler and more a confident and comfortable-in-his-own-skin mensch. The secret ingredient is newcomer Madeline Wise. Apatow has taken Pete on his NYC comedy career life do-over and given his character a burst of manly confidence and a new outlook, combined with Pete Holmes natural talent and charisma, and it all works. Not just Holmes is benefitting from […]

HBO has released a new trailer for the third season of comedian Pete Holmes’ HBO series Crashing and it’s pretty damn funny.
I love this show! Holmes is a funny guy and I love the uncomfortable awkwardness that he brings to this show. If you haven’t started watching the show yet and you enjoy laughing, you should check it out!
The new season “finds Pete reinvigorated, meaning he’s no longer crashing on people’s couches. With this newfound vigor, he reenters the NYC stand-up comedy world following a college tour. Stand up comedy is at a bit of a crossroads. With the #MeToo movement taking over Hollywood and the general public embracing a more “woke” attitude, the typically crass, offensive world of stand up comedy has been under intense scrutiny as of late. And that’s just one of the topics that Pete Holmes is tackling in his new season of “Crashing.” That and his always-evolving, never-working-out love life.

Our staffs, readers, and some celebrity friends come together to select the Best TV comedies of the year!
How does TV comedy keep getting better?
Dramas hit a bit of a plateau on television in 2018. The likes of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and even The Leftovers are now distant memories. Better Call Saul lives on, and The Americans concluded in fine fashion but the landscape after that isn’t as nearly as impressive as years’ past.
More than ever, it is comedy that is the driving force behind the most daring, creative, and fun storytelling on television. Perhaps that’s because comedy is more context-dependent than drama and therefore must be more adaptable and change with the times. Or maybe it’s simply because we all just want to laugh? Whatever the reason,...

And so the calendar closes on yet another TV year. As critics start to assemble year-end best lists and look forward to what the next 12 months might have in store, there’s still a final flurry of new original programming to sift through before 2018 fades away.
Per usual, these are spread out across broadcast, cable, and subscription services, this time with an extra peppering of original films debuting on TV airtime. With plenty of other options to juggle as 2018 closes, allow this one final collection to cap off the bunch.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, June, July, August, October, November, and our giant fall preview.)

The third season of HBO’s comedy series Crashing is set to premiere next year and today we have the first trailer for it to share with you.
I love this show and it’s fun to see what’s in store for comedian Pete Holmes in this upcoming season. As you’ll see, there will be several famous comedian guest stars this season including Amy Schumer, Ray Romano, and Holmes’ real-life, longtime friend John Mulaney.
The trailer also shows Holmes getting a new jacket, which becomes the subject of mockery from some of his fellow comedians. He finds a new girlfriend (Madeline Wise) that his mom isn’t too sure about it. And he also kinda sells out as he starts performing in front of massive church venues. He can’t really be himself in these shows, but they sure to pay well and he doesn’t seem to...

HBO has announced that all of its shows featuring sexually intimate scenes henceforth will have a monitor known as an “intimacy coordinator” on set.
As first reported by Deadline’s sister publication Rolling Stone, the intimacy coordinator will serve as a mediator among actors, directors, producers and crew. HBO’s The Deuce, set in the sex trade industry in New York’s Times Square during the 1970s, already has the first intimacy coordinator working, and other shows are being staffed.
On The Deuce, coordinator Alicia Rodis reviews scripts, discusses the sex scenes before they are filmed and talks to the actors individually, coordinating their activities. She also elicits the actor’s personal boundaries to make sure “consent is informed and certain before we move forward,” she told Rolling Stone. Rodis is essentially an advocate for the actors with the production team on any issues.

They’re built into the framework of “The Deuce,” but HBO is making sure that all their series going forward have someone on hand to ensure safe conditions for the shows’ sex scenes.
As part of creating a safe and acceptable working environment for Season 2 of the David Simon-created 1970s New York-set drama, “The Deuce” hired Alicia Rodis, co-founder of Intimacy Directors International. The organization was designed to help create a universal starting point for all dramatized sex scenes in theater, film, and television.
A Rolling Stone piece about the changing expectations across the industry explained that Rodis will work on additional HBO projects going forward, including “Watchmen,” the upcoming “Deadwood” movie, and next year’s teen-centered show “Euphoria.”
As on “The Deuce,” Rodis’ role will continue to adapt the position from its theatrical origins, ensuring that directors use appropriate language when giving suggestions to actors and that consent...

When one is immersed in television production, there is often little time to check out what stories other series are telling. But with no shortage of prestigious programming across broadcast, cable and streaming today, those who make television are carving out more time to watch for themselves. Rather than view these shows as competition, they want to celebrate the diverse content offerings.
To that end, Variety asked a number of series creators and showrunners what series that they would award with an Emmy this year. With the landscape vast and diverse, so too were the range of answers, encompassing everything from dark cat-and-mouse dramas (“Killing Eve”) to slightly surreal limited series (“The Terror”) to auteur comedies (“Atlanta”) and the end of a spy drama (“The Americans”).

Television academy voters have been known to snub series that originally missed the Emmy boat in subsequent seasons: Consider “The Leftovers,” “Oz” and “The Wire.” None of those shows were ever nominated in the drama series category despite overwhelming critical acclaim. But the Academy has also learned from its mistakes: Series such as “Parks and Recreation,” “Friday Night Lights” and “The Americans” managed to get nominated in their respective categories during subsequent seasons, even after coming up short their first.
FX CEO John Landgraf expected “The Americans” to join “The Wire” and “Oz” as a terminally overlooked series after the spy drama failed to land an Emmy nom in the drama series category its first three seasons.
“Anyone who follows the history of scripted drama in television would tell you that ‘The Wire’ was one of the best television series ever made,” he says. “That it was never nominated is...

There were no holds barred during the comedy panel for Variety’s “A Night in the Writers’ Room” on Thursday.
When asked by Variety’s managing editor of TV, Cynthia Littleton, about the impact of the “Roseanne” cancellation, “The Good Place” creator Michael Schur plainly stated: “Most people on the shows represented on this panel aren’t racist. Most of the actors on our show didn’t dress up as Hitler and bake cookies and then have a photo shoot.”
Schur continued, clarifying that: “The mistake wasn’t canceling the show. The mistake was giving her the show to begin with. She’s been that way for a really long time. It was not a surprise.”

In an era of peak TV, which is a seller’s market with traditional platforms and emerging studios alike eager to find new material, the positives come from the fact that there is a plethora of content that speaks to a wide range of individuals. But the negatives, veteran producer Judd Apatow considers, is that in some cases the same people are making multiple deals.
“A danger of the situation is a lot of people are over-extended and where’s the quality control?” Apatow pointed out at Variety‘s Tune In! TV Summit in Los Angeles Wednesday. “It’s hard to make one TV show, and I don’t know how people do it.”
In a conversation with Variety’s managing editor, TV, Cynthia Littleton, Apatow shared that he, personally, isn’t looking to work on multiple series at the same time.

In its prime, “American Idol” was a show that made gold from pretty much everything it came in contact with on Fox. At the height of its power, it made household names out of the people sitting in the judges’ chairs and competing every week. It also saw ratings so astronomical that it became a coveted lead-in for a variety of shows. New series, returning favorites, and newly-minted hits all enjoyed the slot right after “Idol” on the Fox schedule, through its various seasons and placements.
“24,” The O.C.,” “Bones,” “Fringe,” “Glee,” and “Empire” all benefited from the “Idol” bump, either at the beginning of their runs or on their own respective ascents. FX’s limited series Trust, about the abduction in Italy of John Paul Getty III, launched last Sunday with 1.38 million Live+3 viewers, according to Nielsen data released today. That was up +74% from the 797,000, who watched the Simon Beaufoy/Danny Boyle drama in Live+Same Day but way below recent drama/limited premieres on FX. That includes Feud (3.8 million viewers in Live+3), The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (8.3 million), Taboo (3.43 million), Legion (3.27 million) and Snowfall (2.24 million). In FX’s target adults 18-49 demographic, Trust drew 422,000 L3 viewers. I can’t think of another recent FX drama premiere that has posted L3 18-49 tally under 1 million.
Also Sunday,HBO’s new hit man comedy series Barry opened with 1.01 million viewers. That was a tad above the recent Season 2 premiere of Divorce (966,000 in L3) and doubled the viewership for the Season 2 debut of Crashing (591,000), which has been renewed for a third season.

It’s been a pretty busy thirteen months for John Mulaney. He was a voice on the best new animated comedy of 2017, hosted the Independent Spirit Awards (twice), and toured the country with an all-new hour of material. The last of those has lead to a new special “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City,” which Netflix announced on Wednesday is set for a May 1 release date.
Filmed at Radio City Music Hall, this new special will feature material from Mulaney’s “Kid Gorgeous” tour. This is the third special Mulaney’s made specifically for Netflix, following 2015’s “The Comeback Kid” and last year’s “Oh Hello on Broadway,” in which he performed alongside “Big Mouth” co-creator and Spirits co-host Nick Kroll.

Robert Schwartzman brought his latest movie to SXSW on Saturday and offered a very different take on the traditional romantic comedy: a longtime couple who hopes to save their relationship with a ménage à trois. “The Unicorn,” which is currently on the hunt for a distributor, was greeted with laughter and enthusiastic applause at its world premiere screening at Austin’s Stateside Theatre. Lauren Lapkus (“Crashing”) and Nicholas Rutherford (“Crunch Time”) star as Mal and Cal, who have been engaged for four years and have to suffer through yet another one of her parents’ renewal-of-the-vows ceremony. Much to Mal’s dismay, she finds out...

How well does Pete get it together during the second season of the Crashing TV show on HBO? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether the TV show Crashing is cancelled or renewed for season three. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustration when their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we'd like to offer you the chance to rate all of the Crashing season two episodes below. An HBO comedy, Crashing stars creator Pete Holmes in a semi-autobiographical role, with Dave Attell, Dov Davidoff, and Artie Lange playing versions of themselves. Also starring are Lauren Lapkus as Pete’s ex-wife, Jessica, and George Basil as Leif, her former lover. Jamie Lee recurs as Ali Reissen. The series follows Pete (Holmes), who dives into the cutthroat...

Judd Apatow defines comedy as "speaking your truth and revealing your darkest, deepest stuff that for most people they would keep hidden." Three decades and change into his career, the writer, producer and director will be sharing his insights in online courses for MasterClass.
A trailer for his course focuses on Apatow's process and philosophies. "People should look at comedies as dramas, when they're writing," he says in the clip. "They should be stories that work just as well without any jokes." At another point he says to "ask yourself a lot of questions,...
