Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep became very familiar with each other after their work on Devil Wears Prada. After collaborating, Streep shared her true feelings about her co-star’s acting abilities. And they were words that stuck with Blunt for a long time.

Blunt and Streep first worked alongside each other in the film The Devil Wears Prada. Blunt was cast as Streep’s assistant in the feature, and she admitted to being very nervous about the film. Emily Blunt was last seen in the action comedy The Fall Guy, in which she starred opposite Ryan Gosling. The film satirically depicted many of the behind-the-scenes incidents that occur on the sets of large-scale blockbuster films of the present day. Blunt played the role of a director who was helming an epic sci-fi fantasy in the film.
Though diverse, Blunt’s filmography is lacking in the superhero genre. While the actress has been in musicals and adventure films, she has yet to don a costume, which she revealed in a recent interview that she wears as a badge of honor. However, Blunt was almost cast as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and had to give up on the opportunity due to contractual obligations.

Emily Blunt is revealing what movie she did her most “stressful” stunt in, and her answer may surprise some fans.
The Oscar-nominated actress may have been surrounded by death-defying stunts in her latest movie, The Fall Guy, but she recently told People magazine that her scariest stunt was actually in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.
“That entrance was very stressful for me,” she recalled of the scene.
Blunt, who took over the memorable Julie Andrews role for Disney’s musical sequel, explained that her character’s entrance “had to start in the clouds and come all the way down toward the ground while holding an umbrella aloft. And I’m supposed to walk effortlessly into my close-up as if it’s nothing.”
The Oppenheimer star added, “I did three takes — and then I felt my tolerance go, ‘Pfft!’ And that was it. I was done.”

Emily Blunt was in 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, a Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller that required some wire stunts that ended in spills.
But that wasn’t the scariest thing she’s ever done.

Emily Blunt’s first Oscar nomination was for the type of role the actress doesn’t normally play. Over the course of her career, the London-born actress has played badass action heroes, musical heroines, even delightfully bitchy supporting comic parts. But in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Blunt goes into a totally different mode to play a embittered and humorless long-suffering wife type. It’s a jarring transformation; but, given her versatility, a predictably excellent one.
Born to a former actress and barrister in London, Blunt studied acting in boarding school and began her professional career at 18, when she debuted on a West End production of the play “The Royal Family.” In 2003 she transitioned to screen acting with the British miniseries “Boudica” and “Henry VIII,” before making her theatrical film debut as a haughty, arrogant rich girl in independent drama “My Summer of Love” in 2004.

The age rating for the 1964 “Mary Poppins” has been increased in the U.K. due to “discriminatory language.”
On Friday, the British Board of Film Classification upped the Disney movie’s cinema rating from U, meaning it contained “no material likely to offend or harm,” to PG for “discriminatory language.”
In a statement to Variety, a BBFC spokesperson said that the film “includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots’. While ‘Mary Poppins’ has a historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U. We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”
The word is a racially insensitive term for the Khoekhoe, an indigenous group in South Africa. The BBFC further explained that the word is used in the film by Admiral Boom (Reginald Owen), including when referring to the chimney sweeps whose faces are covered in soot.

Emily Blunt is known for her versatile roles and collaborations with esteemed directors, which include Christopher Nolan, Rob Marshall, Rian Johnson, and Denis Villeneuve. Therefore, it’s not really a surprise she delivered excellent performances in films like Sicario, The Devil Wears Prada, Looper, and Mary Poppins Returns. In fact, she has also worked with the likes of Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer even bowled over the entire cast of the film with one scene.

As a film actor, Emily Blunt has become one of the jack of all trades of her generation, shining in dramas, comedies, musicals, romances, war films and even horror movies. Who can do all that? But with each new project, Blunt challenges herself to take risks into new arenas that she has never tried before, a boldness that has earned her critical respect across the board.
Although Blunt has yet to be nominated for an Academy Award (a shocking oversight that I trust will be rectified one day), she has been nominated for five Golden Globes for her film work, four BAFTA Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, including a win for her performance in “A Quiet Place.” That film, directed and co-written by her husband John Krasinski, became an unexpected smash hit and generated a sequel, appropriately named “A Quiet Place Part II.”

Disney’s Mary Poppins is 60 years old in 2024 – and it’s returning to UK cinemas in March to mark the occasion.
The joyous Disney favourite Mary Poppins is approaching a special birthday this year, with the movie – as the headline to this very piece suggests – now 60 years old.
Directed by Robert Stevenson, penned by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi – based on the work of P L Travers of course – the movie is best known for the mighty Julie Andrews in the lead role. That and, of course, Dick Van Dyke’s entirely convincing Londoner.
It’s a much-loved movie that technically hits 60 this August. However, no problem with getting the party started early: we now learn that the film is returning to over 100 UK cinemas on March 29th 2024.
The re-release isn’t coming direct from Disney, rather through Park Circus. We don’t have the exact cinema count, but over...

Director Doug Liman‘s time loop / alien invasion sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow (watch it Here) did not set the box office on fire – in fact, compared to another notable under-performer starring Tom Cruise, it made less money than 2017’s The Mummy, on a higher budget. Liman has let it be known that he has been working on a script, and Cruise’s co-star Emily Blunt has even previously said that she has read the “really promising and really, really cool” script. "Mary Poppins" has been a beloved children's film since its release in 1964. The musical comedy was a veritable hit among British and American audiences alike and launched the career of the incomparable Julie Andrews, who became one of the brightest stars of the late 20th century.
The Disney classic swept the 1965 Oscars, earning Andrews an Academy Award for her performance and snagging additional awards for visual effects, editing, and music. The film was a great triumph for the studio as well as the stars. It was immediately recognized as the masterpiece that it is and has only retained and strengthened its legendary status with age.

“The Girl on the Train,” “A Quiet Place,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Sicario,” “Looper,” “The Young Victoria.” Those are just a select few of the many acclaimed performances delivered by Emily Blunt in her first two decades as a star. She has been nominated for seven Golden Globes, seven Critics’ Choice Awards, four SAG Awards and three BAFTAs. She’s won at the Globes (“Gideon’s Daughter”), Critics’ Choice (“Edge of Tomorrow”) and SAG (“A Quiet Place.”) So how has this widely beloved actress not had her time in the sun with the academy?
She has never been part of a Best Picture nominee. None of those aforementioned films of hers made the cut with the academy in the top category. This will undoubtedly change with “Oppenheimer.” Indeed this 3-hour pressure-cooker of an epic is widely predicted to win the top prize.

Christmas week rang in an estimated $281.4M, +14% from the Dec. 23-29 period a year ago ($246.4M), indicating that moviegoing remains healthy post-pandemic for a family-heavy, yet diversified lineup of movies — this despite the lack of one big five-quad tentpole on marquees.
Warner Bros./DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom won the week with $58.3M, but Wonka wasn’t far behind with a second week take of $53.1M.

The holiday movie season this year is packed with many options, much like other years have displayed. However, despite the bevy of titles, including Wonka, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Color Purple, Migration, Anyone But You and The Iron Claw, they weren’t enough to garner interest in audiences to flock to theaters around Christmastime. Without the year’s biggest double-feature event with Barbie and Oppenheimer, it could have been a worse showing for theaters as even the reliable blockbusters like the Mission: Impossible, Superhero, and Fast & Furious franchises would flop. It’s almost fitting that 2023 ends with a whimper.

It’s funky times at the holiday box office.
At a glance, without a major monolith title in the marketplace and another pic leading with a single-digit take, it looks like a scenario of the tide failing to lift all boats.
On Wednesday, it was Warner Bros.’ Wonka that won the day with $8 million at 4,213 theaters, moving its running cume to $102.5M on its 13th day. For the Wednesday following Christmas in the past two years, respectively, it was Avatar: The Way of Water that led with $20.5M and Spider-Man: No Way Home with $20.3M. Wonka is the 24th movie to cross $100M at the domestic box office in 2023.

In the six years since the film academy’s music branch first incorporated 15-candidate shortlists into their annual Oscar nominations voting process, a total of 24 films have each been named semi-finalists for both Best Original Score and Best Original Song. This includes five 2023 releases – “American Symphony,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” – which constitute one of the largest groups of double dippers so far. Whether each will ultimately be nominated for both, one, or neither of the music awards remains to be seen, but some insight can be gained by analyzing the fates of their 19 predecessors.
Last year, the roster of dual music shortlist entrants grew by four with the inclusion of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Those films all subsequently became Oscar nominees in some capacity,...

Every year, Christmas comes along to bring a big new release or two to the box office. Often, it's a major awards season contender. Other times, it's a big-budget tentpole from a studio looking to capitalize on the holiday window. In some cases, it's both. "The Color Purple" firmly falls into the "both" category as it is unquestionably a movie that Warner Bros. wants in the Oscar conversation, but also one they spent a great deal of money on. So, can the movie become the big Christmas season hit the studio is banking on?
Directed by Blitz Bazawule ("Black Is King"), the big-budget musical opens on Christmas Day this year, which falls on a Monday. It will be facing quite a bit of competition as "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (also a Warner Bros. release) opens on December 22, with A24's "The Iron Claw," Illumination's animated "Migration," and Sony's...

Updated: After opening early in 37 international box office markets last weekend, Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka expanded its release this session to the rest of the world (save Korea which goes in late January). The results are sweet.
In a total 77 overseas markets, the Paul King-directed, Timothée Chalamet-starrer added another $53.6M during the sophomore session. That takes the offshore cume to $112.4M, and, with domestic, lifts global to $151.4M.
Among new openers, France led play with $5.1M at a clear No. 1 and beating all comps. In Australia, $4M was the 2nd biggest WB opening weekend of 2023 as well as the 2nd biggest family opening weekend of the year. Italy’s $3.4M start was also a clear No. 1 and tracking above comps.
The movie ranked No. 1 in 60 of its 77 markets, with a fantastic -30% hold in the 37 that opened last session (-27% excluding China).

Christmas box office isn’t what it used to be. Before the year’s end, we’ll see eight new wide releases but none are likely to reach the heights of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($805 million domestic) or 2022 “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($685 million).
The musical “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.), Sony’s romance “Anyone but You,” Universal’s animated “Migration,” and Amazon MGM’s “The Boys in the Boat” could rise to decent levels. “Migration” is projected to be the next highest grosser, with “Anyone” a sleeper. There’s also A24’s “The Iron Claw” and Neon’s “Ferrari.”
However, Warner Bros. has two films on which theaters pin their highest hopes: “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” — and most of all, “Wonka.” It’s the third Warners feature based on the Willy Wonka character, but with previous iterations separated by decades it’s never been a franchise.

It’s a Barbie world and we’re all just living in it. Months after becoming the all-time highest-grossing film by a solo female director, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been steadily blowing all other 2023 movies out of the water when it comes to industry awards recognition. One of its greatest achievements yet happened Wednesday morning when the Critics Choice Association showered it with an unprecedented 18 nominations in 16 categories. Despite this strong domination, the teams behind plenty of other films had ample reason to celebrate, as this was the first year in which more than two titles collected at least a dozen bids apiece.
The much-publicized one-upmanship battle between “Barbie” and its fellow July 21 release, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” will continue at the 29th Critics Choice Awards as the popular films face off in 10 races, including Best Picture and Best Director. They faced each other in a box office royale that wound up mushrooming to become the biggest box office weekend of the year. Now, Warner Bros.’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer will go toe-to-toe at the Golden Globes on January 7.
Interestingly enough, coming away from the Golden Globes nominations Monday morning, Barbie bests Oppenheimer by only one nom, 9 to 8.
Barbie‘s edge over Oppenheimer comes in the Original Song Category, where the movie counts an unprecedented three nominations for “Dance the Night Away”, “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”
In addition, Barbie also counts nominations for Best Musical/Comedy, Best Actress Musical Comedy (Margot Robbie), Male Supporting Role (Ryan Gosling), Best Screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Director (Gerwig), and a slot in the new category Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka provided some much-needed sweetener at the weekend box office, where it placed No. 1 on the global chart in earning $43.2 million from its first 37 overseas markets.
That’s a promising start for the Christmas musical, which opens everywhere in North America on Dec. 16 as it continues to roll out across the globe. Tracking suggests the Warner Bros. movie will launch in the $40 million range domestically and then keep audiences entranced throughout the long holiday stretch.
Wonka is an origin tale about Willy Wonka, the iconic candy maker featured in Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which spawned at least two previous Hollywood movies.
The new film, rated PG, has been a curiosity factor for months in regard to how it will go over with audiences.

Updated: There were two new Hollywood entries at the international box office this weekend as both Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka and Universal/Illumination’s Migration began early offshore rollout, though on different patterns.
It was good news all around with Timothée Chalamet-starrer Wonka launching to $43.2M in 37 markets, well ahead of pre-weekend projections. The Paul King-directed origins story/musical ranked No. 1 in 32 markets. In like-for-likes and using today’s exchange rates, the film is tracking 95% above Paddington, 77% over Mary Poppins Returns and 50% over The Greatest Showman.
In Latin America, Wonka was tops for the region with 63% market share, surpassing the above comps by 232%, 145% and 129%, respectively. In Europe, the film was No. 1 in each of its launches.
As expected, the UK was the lead play at $11.1M, boasting a 73% market share of the Top 5. This will be the 2nd biggest opening for a Warner Bros film in 2023, behind Barbie,...

Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka begins early release in 37 international box office markets this session, ahead of the domestic bow on December 15. Next week will also see the addition of all other overseas markets, save Korea which is going at the end of January.
Current estimates for this frame’s offshore bow — which includes such majors as Spain, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, Japan and China — are for a $30M early debut for the Timothée Chalamet-starrer.
Comps here are The Greatest Showman which had a $28.1M opening in like-for-like markets at historical rates ($24.9M at today’s dollars); Paddington, also from Wonka director Paul King, at $26.2M historical and $21.9M restated; and Mary Poppins Returns with $24.9M at 2018 figures and $23.8M at today’s rates. (Note we are not comping to Tim Burton’s 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory due to the length of time that has passed in the interim.

Every fan of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971) loves the scene where Gene Wilder, as the mystical candy maker, takes his guests on a psychedelic tunnel ride, zooming through the bowels of the Chocolate Factory as he chants a little verse, getting angrier and more hysterical by the second. Wilder’s Wonka was a sweetheart, but he had a hidden maniacal side. And in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Tim Burton’s majestically wacked 2005 remake, Johnny Depp, then at the apex of his movie stardom, went full Depp, playing Wonka like some louche vampiristic cross between Anna Wintour and Michael Jackson.
But in “Wonka,” the fun, rousing, impeccably staged, jaw-droppingly old-fashioned musical prequel to the legendary Roald Dahl tale, Timothée Chalamet plays the title character as the beaming soul of effervescent goodness. His chocolate passion is there (he’s all but defined by it), but the kinks are gone...

Updated Exclusive: Warner Bros’ feature musical Wonka arrived on three-week-out tracking this week with a revised industry projection of $35M-$40M when it opens on Dec. 15.
That start is in the vicinity of Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($36.2M) which opened before Christmas on Dec. 20. While going pre-Christmas is always risky for any movie, family branded pics are quite safe and remain a powerful distraction for families who are still in the throes of shopping.

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

“The Color Purple” will compete at the Golden Globes in comedy/musical, Gold Derby can exclusively confirm.
Fantasia Barrino, who plays Celie, will be the sole lead acting contender. The film, scheduled to open Christmas Day, also stars Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., H.E.R., Ciara, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and Halle Bailey.
The categorization, of course, is hardly a surprise, since the movie is an adaptation of the hit 2005 Broadway musical, which was based on Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Steven Spielberg‘s 1985 film adaptation. The original musical received 11 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and won Best Actress in a Musical for Lachanze. The 2015 revival won Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Cynthia Erivo, and earned a Best Featured Actress in a Musical bid for Brooks, who reprises her role as Sofia in the upcoming film.

Emily Blunt could’ve joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. The Oppenheimer star is now opening up about what she thinks of Scarlett Johansson who ended up playing the role across multiple films.
“Come on, the best girl got it,” Blunt said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about Johansson adding that she was “amazing.”
Johansson would go on and reprise the superhero role in films like The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Captain Marvel (2019), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the standalone Black Widow movie in 2021.
Furthermore, Blunt has been rumored to have been offered other roles in the MCU. Roles that Blunt was allegedly up for included Captain Marvel which ultimately went to Brie Larson, Peggy Carter who Hayley Atwell ended up playing and Sue Storm from Fantastic Four which...

“Oppenheimer” is one of Christopher Nolan‘s best movies according to both critics and audiences. While the film’s script, technical achievements, and directing are all being praised, however, it’s the cast that makes the film pop. Simply put, it is one of the most stacked casts in cinema history outside of, say, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Cillian Murphy leads the line in the titular role of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, while “Endgame” actor himself, Robert Downey Jr., portrays political player Lewis Strauss and Emily Blunt is Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty. Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Conti, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich also appear. As such, our odds charts are currently predicting that “Oppenheimer” will land not one acting bid, not two acting bids, but three nominations for its cast. Here’s the rundown.
Best Actor — Cillian Murphy
This is the obvious one and for good reason.

“Oppenheimer” has burst into the Oscar race.
With the earnest and urgent cultural fabric of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the philosophical measure of “The Tree of Life,” writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan’s chronicle of the creation of the most destructive weapon ever used stands as the most ambitious and vital piece of filmmaking of his career. Adapted from the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” tells the complicated and morally fraught story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the effort to develop the atomic bomb.
Nolan and his stellar ensemble of actors have amassed 27 Oscar nominations collectively throughout their careers. One of those who surprisingly hasn’t nabbed one is Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist. With dry wit and womanizing charm that effectively makes him the scientific version of Michael Fassbender in “Shame,” Murphy is an...

“The Inventor,” a new stop-motion animated feature starring Daisy Ridley and Marion Cotillard, has secured U.S. theatrical distribution at Blue Fox Entertainment.
Having premiered in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, the feature is about Leonardo da Vinci and marks the directorial debut of Pixar vet Jim Capobianco. “The Inventor” will be released nationwide on Aug. 25.
Capobianco is a longtime animation stalwart who worked on movies during the so-called Disney Renaissance before moving to Pixar, where he wrote on “Ratatouille” (and was subsequently nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar) and worked in the story department for “Inside Out,” “Coco” and “Finding Dory.” Capobianco wrote “The Inventor” and directed alongside Pierre-Luc Granjon.
In addition to Ridley and Cotillard, the stop-motion film features the voices of Stephen Fry, Gauthier Battoue and Matt Berry, with the story following da Vinci as “he leaves Italy to join the...

It’s not unusual to see a musical based on a movie or TV show or even a comic. But “Rogers: The Musical” might be the first one created from a throwaway joke in a TV show spun-off from a film series based on comic books. Audiences can now check out the mini-musical, which runs about a tight half hour, at Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater, through Aug. 31. I was lucky enough to witness the opening performance last week, followed by a panel discussion with some of the key creatives.
“Rogers” first came to life in the Disney+ show “Hawkeye,” in which Jeremy Renner’s titular Avenger finds himself taking in a Broadway show with his kids. The show hits a little too close to home, as it turns out to be an adaptation of the life of his friend Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America. The show...
