In Alexander Payne's recent dramedy "The Holdovers," the Oscar-nominated Paul Giamatti played a grumpy (but charismatic) teacher, largely hated by the student body. It seems that the students of Starfleet Academy are about to hate him even more, as — according to a new report from Variety — the actor has been cast as the central villain of the upcoming "Starfleet Academy" TV series. The Variety report says that Giamatti will serve as an as-yet unnamed recurring antagonist throughout the "Star Trek" show's first season, and that his character will have "a sinister connection to the past of one of the (yet to be cast) cadets." Variety didn't specify if he'd be playing a human or another alien species.
Speculation may now commence. Will he be playing a bitter former professor? An escaped convict and serial killer who just happens to be the father of one of the main characters? A charismatic cult leader,...

Update: A month after the Paul Giamatti / Hostel TV series rumor popped up, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that it’s actually happening! Giamatti is set to play “a key role” in the Hostel TV show, which is said to reinvent the franchise as an “elevated thriller.” The series is coming our way from Fifth Season, the studio behind Apple’s Severance, and has Eli Roth, Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss on board as executive producers. Roth and Briggs are also writing the project, which Roth will be directing.
In 2013, Giamatti revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he almost made a cameo in the original Hostel: “Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out.” Now it looks like Giamatti and Roth are going to make up for lost time.

One weird thing that happens with long-running franchises is that they eventually reach a point where the creatives leading the new movies grew up as fans of the old ones. Sometimes this is a bad thing — it arguably leads to an increase in lazy fan-service at the expense of any bold, innovative creative decisions — but other times it just makes the whole thing feel even more exciting. To know that the new people in charge truly care about the lore can go a long way in keeping viewers on board.
Even outside the writing and the directing department, it's fun when the actors involved love the series, as was the case with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" star Anya Taylor-Joy. Although it doesn't sound like she's a die-hard fan of the original "Mad Max" films from the '70s and '80s, she does clearly have a ton of respect for "Mad Max: Fury Road,...

Every Married at First Sight season has at least one villain. From the looks of it, Miguel Santiago appears to be linked to the villain from his season, Morgan Bell. So, what do we know so far about this situation?
Married At First Sight Has Had Its Share Of Villains
Over its long history of 17 seasons so far, Married at First Sight has had a string of villains. At least one cast member every season rubs viewers the wrong way. In some cases, there may be even more than one cast member that viewers love to hate.
Some notable Married at First Sight villains over the years include the likes of Matt Gwynne, Chris Williams, Molly Duff, and more. While these types of cast members are horrible for whoever they are married to, they are great for drama, and great for getting people to tune in.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man receives less fan love than these superheroes in the MCU. When fans were asked to poll on the best superhero trilogy in the MCU, most of them chose Chris Evans’ Captain America trilogy and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. While the first Iron Man film remains one of the best films in the 30 billion-dollar franchise, Downey Jr.’s third film had unfavorable opinions, which made it many people’s third favorite trilogy.

However, the critical and audience opinions are different cases from the box office numbers of these films. Interestingly, the controversial Iron Man 3 had box office earnings higher than any of the Captain America movies or the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

The world of CBS’ The Neighborhood is expanding.
The network’s streaming sibling, Paramount+, has ordered a comedy series titled Crutch that stars Tracy Morgan and is set in the same world as The Neighborhood — albeit on the other side of the country. The show comes from CBS Studios, and The Neighborhood star and executive producer Cedric The Entertainer is among its EPs.
Morgan will play Francois Crutchfield, aka Crutch, a cousin of Cedric’s Calvin Butler and a Harlem widower whose adult son and daughter move back in with him. Morgan previously guest starred in a 2022 episode of The Neighborhood as a different relative of Calvin’s — his younger brother Curtis.

Updated with James Gunn comment: Egyptian-born comedian Bassem Youssef claims he lost a role in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy movie due to his public support of Palestine during a Piers Morgan: Uncensored October interview, however, a source close to production tells Deadline, that’s not the case: Youssef was never formerly offered the role.
We hear that Youssef taped an audition pre-actors strike for the role of Rumaan Harjadi. However, by the time Gunn turned in his final shooting strike post writers’ strike ending in late September, that role was cut. This was all before the tragic events of Oct. 7, 2023. Hence per the Superman Legacy production source — no official ask was made to Youssef. Given that the actors strike was still ongoing in late September, and didn’t end until early November, no communication about Youssef obtaining or not obtaining the role would have been communicated to him.

Paul Giamatti is one of the most highly respected actors working in the industry today, and he’s also quite prolific, with over 115 screen credits to his name. Last night, he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the excellent comedy / drama film The Holdovers – and during a red carpet interview at the event, he revealed there’s one area where he feels his career is lacking: he hasn’t worked on enough horror projects.
Asked if there’s a genre he would love to work in, Giamatti answered, “Horror. I’d like to do more horror. I love horror.” When asked what his favorite horror movie is, he replied, “Oh, that’s a very tricky question. I like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a lot. I love horror. Love it!” When the interviewer was a bit shocked and appalled that Giamatti is such a Chainsaw fan, Giamatti stood up for it: “Great movie!

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Charisma, star talent, and a notably humble personality: At just 26 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to have it all. “The Queen’s Gambit” starlet has become the face of Viktor & Rolf, garnered an Emmy nomination, and won a Golden Globe award — all in just six short years after her first feature role. The Miami-born, Argentine-raised, and London-based international film star landed on the scene in 2015 with Robert Eggers’ directorial debut “The Witch.” The breakout role from the Sundance hit cemented Taylor-Joy’s striking screen presence, with IndieWire’s review calling her “standout” performance “exquisitely ominous and unequivocally haunting.”
Taylor-Joy quickly became an indie darling with subsequent films “Morgan” opposite Kate Mara, “Thoroughbreds” by writer-director Cory Finley, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass.” In an interview with IndieWire, she lamented that she refuses to be typecast, but rather follows the “magic feeling” of reading the right part.

Paramount+ has renewed Seal Team, headlined by David Boreanaz, for a seventh season. The pickup comes two months after the popular military drama’s Season 6 finale, which ended with a cliffhanger. The delay, compared to the Season 6 renewal which came a week after the Season 5 finale, prompted fans to launch a #RenewSEALTeam social media campaign, which sent the show’s title trending multiple times over the last few weeks.

The new year is upon us and Amazon Prime Video is kicking things off in grand fashion. Not only are they debuting the third season of their Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan,” they’re also debuting the final season of the ambitious, Al Pacino-starring actioner “Hunters.”
Initially debuting to the service in February of 2020, right as the pandemic started, the series’ first season follows a ragtag group of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City. The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. The series concluded in 2020 and has taken some time to get back to screens. Unfortunately, this second season will be a finale as well so fans...

On the journey of making my new documentary film “Quintessentially British,” I encountered some quirky lords, charming knights, irrepressible dames and Shakespeare-quoting taxi drivers. I grew up in Ireland, but London has been my home since leaving university. Being an Irish filmmaker allowed me an outsider’s perspective to explore Britishness in the year of the late Queen’s platinum jubilee.
The first day of filming was in the House of Lords with the eccentric pro-smoking hereditary peer, Lord Palmer, or to give him his full title, Adrian Bailie Nottage Palmer the 4th Baron of Reading. He lives in the beautiful 109-room Edwardian mansion Manderston in the Scottish borders. But don’t be jealous, as Lord Palmer freely admits that it has 100 rooms too many.

Oscar winner Keith Carradine (The Power of the Dog), Emmy nominee Jason Ritter (Raising Dion), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wrenn Schmidt (Nope) have joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming anthology series Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore.
Developed by Gordon and co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, Accused is based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology. It opens in a courtroom on the accused, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, Accused depicts how an ordinary person gets caught up in an extraordinary situation, ultimately revealing how one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back.
The series premieres Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 9 p.

Kevin Bacon has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it is in an incredibly surprising way. He will be playing himself in the forthcoming "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" set to premiere on Disney+ on November 25, 2022. Thanks to mergers and multiverses, Bacon technically already is in the MCU, as he played Sebastian Shaw in "X-Men: First Class," but this is his official introduction to the current slate.
Because Bacon will be playing himself, it immediately brings to mind the incredibly fun game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." The man has appeared in so many films for over 40 years now, in both leading and supporting parts, that it feels like he has worked with every actor out there. Surprisingly, this holiday special will be the first time he has worked with every actor that makes up the Guardians team. That means playing Six Degrees with this cast is pretty fun.

"The Crown" unravels decades of British history throughout its ten-episodic season. Showrunner Peter Morgan's stellar attention to detail guarantees that the most historic, noteworthy events experienced by the British monarchy make the cut — but sometimes, he wants a scene to illustrate the commitment and love shared between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
With episodes entirely focusing on constitutional meetings, the queen's relationship with her family and her prime ministers, the somewhat-controversial experiences of the royal family, and other things, the show has little room for any potentially suggestive moments. So during the show's third season, when Peter Morgan wanted to construct a playful scene between the reigning monarch and her royal consort, the showrunner knew he had earned it.
The Crown Is Rarely Racy
In an interview with The New York Times, Peter Morgan detailed his work on "The Crown," the ambitious television undertaking that tells the story of Elizabeth II's reign.

From Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment to one of movie history’s most shocking death scenes, Warner’s classical training, style and fine voice gave character to any role
David Warner dies aged 80David Warner: a life in pictures
David Warner was a distinguished English Shakespearean actor, in fact one of the great stage Hamlets of his generation but, in movie terms, and especially as he got older, his strong, intelligent face and equine handsomeness almost made him the English Max von Sydow, eminently castable in supporting character roles as troubled or darkly villainous people in scary films.
It was Warner’s destiny to have one of the most macabre and shocking death scenes in movie history in the classic 1976 chiller The Omen, a stomach-turningly horrible coup which he endured in the role of Keith, the long-haired and wild-eyed photographer who notices that there is something very wrong...

Well it has certainly started with a bang.
The Rupert Murdoch-backed Talk TV hasn’t even reached launch day yet Piers Morgan already is generating global headlines for his spat with Donald Trump, after a promo clip of the opening of Morgan’s Uncensored Talk TV tentpole showed the former Potus storming off set.
With rumors abounding that the conflict might have been generated for publicity, Morgan again finds himself the talk of the media — and the news channel hasn’t even debuted.
Talk TV will launch Monday by placing Morgan center stage, one year after he himself stormed off the set of ITV’s Good Morning Britain due to a row over his comments about Meghan Markle’s mental health.

Complaints about UK TV shows to regulator Ofcom increased by 124% last year, driven by Piers Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle’s suicide claims on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
There were more than 150,000 complaints to the regulator in 2021, Ofcom said today, more than one-third of which came after Morgan’s rejection of Markle’s suicide claims during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, when he stated: “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report.”
The affair caused Morgan to storm off set the following day and very soon after he left the program. Ofcom cleared ITV of any wrongdoing over his comments in September after taking “full account of freedom of expression.”
The Oprah interview, which also aired on ITV, attracted almost 6,500 complaints to Ofcom and was the fourth most-complained about show of the year, just ahead of an episode of Love Island.

Hacks standout Poppy Liu has been tapped as a series regular opposite Rachel Weisz in Amazon’s Dead Ringers series, a reimagining with a gender swap of David Cronenberg’s cult classic 1980s film. The project, which received a straight-to-series order last year, hails from Weisz, Alice Birch, lead writer of Hulu’s acclaimed Normal People series, Annapurna Television and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the company behind the original movie.
Dead Ringers is a modern take on Cronenberg’s thriller starring Jeremy Irons, featuring Weisz playing the double lead role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.

The Dark Passenger is back. Dexter Morgan is returning to Showtime in Dexter: New Blood, and the new limited series appears to be aiming to erase the, let’s call it contentious, reputation of the Dexter series finale. You can check out the first look at Dexter: New Blood below.
Michael C. Hall is back as everyone’s favorite compulsive serial killer, this time taking up residence in snowy upstate New York under the alias Jim Lindsay (the name appears to be a nod to Dexter creator Jeff Lindsay). Dexter is once again hiding in plain sight, but he knows that “Every day I walk through this world, faking it. Knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it.” Dex doesn’t appear to have changed his look much, meaning that in the world of Dexter, you can still count on the FBI to be pretty incompetent.

The following contains The Flash spoilers through Season 7, Episode 12.
The Flash Season 7 Episode 12
It’s the end of an era on The Flash. Season 7’s “Good-Bye Vibrations” marks the last episode for original cast member Carlos Valdes, a long-rumored departure that finally comes to pass and will irrevocably alter the core team around which the show was initially built.
It’s hard to know precisely how to feel about Cisco’s departure from Central City. After all, it seems that Valdes is more than open to returning for the occasional guest appearance, and it’s not like the show has given Cisco much to do in the past several seasons. He spent most of Season 6 on what felt like endless offscreen trips to Atlantis, and his (largely sweet but deadly dull) relationship with Kamilla has been his only notable character arc to speak of in recent years.
