Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh doesn’t care about the camera. He cares more about the story. And indeed, he shot another successful feature (Presence) on a prosumer camera (Sony a9 III).
Sony Alpha 9 III Soderbergh: Unconventional director and cinematographer
Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh loves to be the first to try new cameras even on high-end feature film productions. His early films were primarily filmed on Super 8 and 16 mm film formats. In the middle of his career, he was not afraid to utilize new cameras even in their production phase. For instance, Contagion (2011) which is one of the most-watched movies in the Covid era, was shot on the Red One Mx. Before that, Soderbergh filmed all of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) on a Red One camera, which has retailed for $4000 for that time. Furthermore, Soderbergh filmed the entirety of Unsane (2018) on an iPhone 7 Plus with its 4K digital camera using the app FiLMiC Pro.

Kelly Marcel helms the antihero movie in her feature directorial debut, and wrote the screenplay from a story she developed with Hardy. The duo, who also developed the first two “Venom” installments, return to produce the film alongside Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker.
Reps for Sony and Backo did not immediately respond to request for comment on her casting.
Backo most recently starred opposite Lakeith Stanfield on Apple TV+ limited series “The Changeling,” paying Emma, wife to Stanfield’s Apollo and a new mom who is suffering emotionally and vanishes without a trace.

No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”

Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh has dedicated more than four decades to shaping his legacy in Hollywood as a director, cinematographer and producer. But instead of splurging on yachts or a home in the South of France, he is investing in the future of independent filmmaking by mentoring directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Nolan and most recently Eddie Alcazar. He and Alcazar’s second collaboration (after 2018’s Perfect) is Divinity, which hits theaters nationwide Friday after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, follows Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula), a scientist who has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum known as “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose...

It’s been so long since Steven Soderbergh announced his recut of Kafka––so long since the thing even premiered at TIFF––that one could assume it was no longer in play. But reemergence, it seems, is in store: Indiewire have announced the U.S. premiere of his new edition, Mr. Kneff, will occur at Nitehawk’s Prospect Park location on November 9, with a complimentary cocktail made from Soderbergh’s Signani 63 offered. Tickets are now on-sale.
The official synopsis is scant: “A writer guy in 1919 Prague uses his dead-end job as inspiration for his fantastical fiction.” But the extent of Soderbergh’s revision is huge: the movie’s lost 20 minutes and, what’s more, all dialogue––silent-movie accompaniment includes an instrumental of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
If you (like me) aren’t in New York on November 9, it’s comfort to know Nitehawk’s premiere shouldn’t be the end of the road.

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).

Netflix’s “One Piece” has a colorful, vibrant cast filled newcomers like Iñaki Godoy, who plays as Monkey D. Luffy, and some more seasoned actors like Vincent Regan, who plays Vice Admiral Garp. Netflix put in the work (seven years to be exact) to craft its live adaption of the bestselling manga series.
When “One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda first saw Godoy, he knew that was his Luffy. Each of the cast members have created their own connection to their characters, and some loved and grew up watching them on screen as children.

This story about Riley Keough first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. The interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
The beginning of 2021 was a rough time for Riley Keough. A few years removed from her breakthrough roles in Andrea Arnold’s film “American Honey” and Steven Soderbergh’s series “The Girlfriend Experience,” she was about to codirect her first film, “War Pony,” with Gina Gammell, and she had a starring role as a ’70s rock star in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the hotly anticipated limited series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit novel.
But her struggle with Lyme disease was getting particularly rough, and she was also reeling from the summer 2020 death of her younger brother, Benjamin.

One briny-deep thriller that does not have sharks, other aquatic predators or even human ones, German director Max Erlenwein’s English-language “The Dive” manages to work up considerable tension nonetheless. It’s closer in gist to “127 Hours” than most other underwater suspense films, hinging on a similar type of physical entrapment — only the survivable timespan here is of course much reduced, because the imperiled characters have a limited oxygen supply.
While perhaps not quite striking enough in style or incident to leave a lasting impression, this very well-crafted remake of co-writer Joachim Heden’s 2020 Norwegian feature “Breaking Surface” should particularly impress with its underwater photography on the big screen. Most viewers, however, are likely to catch it via home formats, as Rlje Films releases the film day-and-date to digital and theater screens on Aug. 25.

Sunday’s season (series?) finale of the HBO drama “The Idol” was the show’s best episode yet — but only a few reputations will survive this summer disaster.
Episode 5 saw characters put on some clothes and get out of pop star Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) house for once. Director Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”) showed some of the visual dazzle for which he is famous, with long shots that were practically Kubrickian. Dirtball Svengali Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) received a measure of comeuppance, even as the show continued to affirm his alleged brilliance.
It was the best episode of “The Idol,” meaning it will be the worst episode of television this week. Shapeless, stupid and too performatively erotic and shocking, the five-episode collaboration among Levinson, music superstar Tesfaye and Reza Fahim is one of the worst shows ever made.

It was the best episode of “The Idol,” meaning it will be the worst episode of television this week. Shapeless, stupid and too performatively erotic and shocking, the five-episode collaboration among Levinson, music superstar Tesfaye and Reza Fahim is one of the worst shows ever made.

The 2023 edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival opens Friday night with some A-list firepower. Ewan McGregor and Alicia Vikander will be in the Czech spa town to collect special honors, while Russell Crowe is attending for a career retrospective and to receive the Crystal Globe lifetime achievement award. Crowe will also be performing on the opening night along with his band The Gentlemen Barbers.
But there’ll also be another musical act set to play June 30 at the opening concert, one that’s perhaps a little more established than the Gladiator star (no disrespect, Russell).
English band Morcheeba have been fine-tuning their downtempo, electronic vibes since forming in the mid-1990s, moving from trip hop origins into more pop-based, hip-hop-infused soul waters, most notably with the 1998 breakout album Big Calm and 2000’s follow-up, Fragments of Freedom. Though “The Idol” may present growing up in the trappings of fame as an inescapable nightmare, that’s not its star’s experience with Hollywood. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Thursday, Lily-Rose Depp spoke about her “normal” childhood with father Johnny Depp in comparison to the Sam Levinson series.
The daughter of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor and French singer and model Vanessa Paradis, Depp has been connected to the industry since birth. Despite that, she said that her parents “did their best to give my brother and I the most ‘normal’ childhood that we could have. Obviously, still not totally normal, but a sense of normalcy, at least.”

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for the first episode of “The Idol.”]
After setting the internet ablaze for months, “The Idol” finally premiered its first of five episodes on HBO Sunday night, establishing the stakes of a lurid show business saga certain to provoke strong reactions all the way through.
The news cycle around the show, co-created by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and “Euphoria” co-creator Sam Levinson, has been as messy as the life of the pop star at its center: Originally directed as a dreamlike odyssey by “The Girlfriend Experience” showrunner Amy Seimetz, the unfinished version of “The Idol” was canned by Tesfaye and rebooted as a whole new project almost exactly one year ago with Levinson at the helm. While it remains to be seen whether the revision was worth the effort, the premiere makes it clear that any allegations about Tesfaye’s off-screen antics pale in comparison to the eerie villain he portrays in the show.

“The Idol” — HBO’s new series starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as a Svengali-like guru who takes a pop star (Lily Rose-Depp) under his wing — premieres on June 4 after a full year of making headlines for its reportedly “chaotic” production, “toxic” set and, according to some, “sexual torture porn” content.
Here’s a timeline of all “The Idol” controversies that have beset the series, from the replacing of original director Amy Seimetz to reports from traumatized crew members to reception by critics, who, to date, have given it a dismal 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This story about Riley Keough and “Daisy Jones & the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She walked out into the blue stage lights like she’d been there before, a gossamer cape swirling in the wind as she warily eyed the guitar player standing a few feet away. The wariness gradually melted, replaced by a gamut of emotions: playfulness, then a passion that felt driven and a joy that almost seemed desperate. She was flirtatious and seductive when sharing a microphone, but when her partner left the stage she grabbed hold of a love song and turned it into an instrument of salvation.
This all happened during the concert scenes in the final episode of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” and it added up to one thing: In the title role, Riley Keough was pretty much a rock star. In one way,...

HanWay Films has boarded The One, an erotic thriller starring Melissa Barrera and Nicholas Hoult and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Barrera, who’s coming off box office horror hit Scream VI, leads the cast opposite the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Hoult. Barrera plays Taylor, whose last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show begins to feel terrifyingly real as she becomes a finalist. Amidst an opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and champagne, “pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales, with WME Independent and UTA co-repping the film for North America.

The behind-the-scenes controversies of "The Idol" seem like they might overshadow the actual story of HBO's upcoming drama series. The television show, which lists Sam Levinson of "Euphoria" fame and Abel Tesfaye a.k.a. The Weeknd as co-creators and producers, has undergone drastic production changes since its initial stages of development, reportedly due to Tesfaye's push for his own creative direction. After months of delays, cast and crew changes, and rewrites and reshoots, the newest trailer for the "The Idol" finally revealed that the series will premiere on June 4, 2023.
Much of the production drama of "The Idol" has to do with the portrayal of its premise, which revolves around pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, and her relationship with cult leader Tedros (Tesfaye) during a crisis stage in her career. Although HBO initially ordered the show to series in November 2021, director and executive producer Amy Seimetz of Starz...

As you might be aware, "Daisy Jones & the Six" star Riley Keough hails from a high-profile Hollywood family. Though she had phenomenal musical influences growing up surrounded by so many professional musicians, Keough found her passion in acting after devouring "Moulin Rouge" and "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" at an early age. Keough debuted in 2010's "The Runaways," starring alongside Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, and she hasn't shown any signs of slowing down since.
Having several career-defining projects under her belt - including Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Logan Lucky," and more - the 33-year-old actor has taken on her biggest role yet as the title character in "Daisy Jones & the Six." Based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's 2019 bestseller of the same name, the miniseries chronicles the journey of an iconic '70s rock group to the top and their sudden fall.

HBO hit the jackpot with "Euphoria," the increasingly successful teen drama capable of crashing HBO Max and dominating the social media zeitgeist for weeks on end. The fervor around the show has been so absolute that it was no surprise when HBO doubled down on working with series creator Sam Levinson. Along with Abel Tesfaye (aka musical artist The Weeknd), Levinson has now created "The Idol," a new series expected to debut sometime in 2023. From the onset, "The Idol" presented itself with the hard edge and glamour of "Euphoria," but traded high school hallways for a world of pop stars and cults. It sounded like the kind of intense drama that would capitalize on Levinson's "Euphoria" success, but recent reports reveal that there's trouble in paradise.

For the past several months, HBO has been relentlessly hyping up “The Idol,” a limited series from “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and R&b giant The Weeknd. But over the last year, the show has faced very public production issues — and it turns out that those first reports may have only scratched the surface of tensions on set.
A new Rolling Stone report published Wednesday goes behind the scenes of the music industry drama, with 13 anonymous sources from production describing a chaotic and tense set, where shooting went behind schedule and scripts finished late.
“The creators and producers of ‘The Idol’ have been working hard to create one of HBO’s most exciting and provocative original programs. The initial approach on the show and production of the early episodes, unfortunately, did not meet HBO standards so we chose to make a change,” HBO told IndieWire in a statement. “Throughout the process,...

It’s fitting that Prime Video’s new series Daisy Jones & the Six charts the rise and fall of a popular ’70s rock band, because the show actually feels like a double album from that era: overly long and often self-indulgent, but with scattered bits of greatness that make the whole thing worthwhile. Daisy Jones — premiering this Friday; I’ve seen the first five episodes — takes a while to get started and falls victim to quite a few rock biopic clichés along the way, but the vibrant music scenes and an array of strong performances and memorable original songs...

There’s a thrilling moment a little before the halfway point of Amazon’s new limited series “Daisy Jones & the Six” in which two stars collide. The ethereal vocalist Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) has been invited to perform her collaboration with a rising rock band (no points for guessing their moniker), but crashes the stage a bit early and then refuses to leave after her one song has been performed. Daisy and the Six’s lead singer Billy (Sam Claflin) share the microphone for a while, if “share” is the word for what one does in a battle for territory; faces close together, they’re competing for real estate, competing for a claim on the song they sing, competing to be heard.
That rivalry is the essence of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” a flawed but compelling adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel of the same name. Reid...

Riley Keough turned up in Hollywood on Thursday night to attend the world premiere of her new Prime Video TV series, Daisy Jones & the Six, marking her first red carpet appearance since the sudden death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, on Jan. 12. It was quite the scene, too, as the Tcl Chinese Theatre was packed with guests dressed to match the ’70s glam dress code while Keough and her co-stars were supported by a producing team that included Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon.
Keough, wearing Schiaparelli Couture and accompanied by husband Ben Smith-Petersen, toplines the series as Daisy Jones, the co-lead singer of a ’70s rock band. Based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & the Six details the rise and precipitous fall of that band, from early days toiling away at small gigs through a meteoric rise that culminates in a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

"Magic Mike's Last Dance" is a somewhat baffling and disappointing end to an unlikely trilogy. This one sees the return of Steven Soderbergh to the director's chair, with Reid Carolin again penning the script. Rather than the gritty drama of the first film or the delightful fantasy of the second, we instead get a dull romance with paper-thin characters, lame voice-over narration, and rather clean and puritan dance numbers, resulting in a film that feels more like an advertisement for the "Magic Mike Live" show than a movie.
The biggest problem of this movie is that it never fully decides what it wants to be, or who it is meant to be for. The first "Magic Mike" was essentially the male version of Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience," a gritty drama of the business of pleasure amidst the economic crisis. Exclusive: Nick Nolte (Graves) and Jacqueline Bisset (Birds of Paradise) will star alongside Oliver Masucci (Fantastic Bests: The Secrets of Dumbledore) in Shelter Me, a pandemic-set psychological drama marking the directorial debut of actor Jake Weber.
The film will be Nolte and Bisset’s third together, on the heels of Peter Yates’ 1977 treasure-hunter adventure The Deep, based on Peter Benchley’s 1976 novel of the same name, and Til Schweiger’s 2018 Alzheimer’s dramedy, Head Full of Honey.
Shelter Me is an anthology of storylines set against the international backdrop of Covid-19. Masucci portrays Jon Boylan, an A.I. research scientist who is unable to intimately connect with members of his test group (Nolte and Bisset). He subsequently develops a remote monitoring system that exposes personal struggles, weaknesses and strengths during isolation that come to a reckoning, as their layers of personality begin to peel away.
