Like Sleeping Beauty rising from her slumber, Angelina Jolie is reawakening her role as the main villain in a second Maleficent movie. Jolie has been spending a lot of time behind the camera, including directing the film First They Killed My Father (set to debut on Netflix Sept. 15). However, it seems as though her filing for divorce from Brad Pitt has led her back in front of the camera. "I am now the breadwinner for the family, so it's time," Jolie told Deadline at a reception during the Telluride Film Festival, where First They Killed My Father was presented. Indeed, Jolie tells The Hollywood Reporter that she took "over a year off" because of her "family...

Have you ever watched a movie and thought to yourself, “Wait a second, did I just see that?” Kind of like in the movie Fight Club when Brad Pitt mentions how there’s a split second where a movie will cut to nudity. The people in the theater think they saw it but not really because it was so fast. Well, what about in Disney movies? Ever had a moment where you think to yourself, “wait, wasn’t that in the other movie too?” Next time that happens to you, listen to your gut because chances are that it Is in that

Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. While I cannot say the festival has started for me with the searing acuteness found day one in Cannes last year with Timbuktu, with Hirokazu Kore-eda's Our Little Sister the tone of my first full day on the Croisette instead began with the Japanese director's particular sensibility of refined, humane warmth and a complete absence of desire to impress.A wonderful concept centers this picture and called back to me small memories of a Mikio Naruse film I loved long ago, Older Brother, Younger Sister (speaking now of Japanese masters, Our Little Sister also contains a poignant reference to Ozu's The End of Summer). Three single women, not young but also not middle-aged, sisters from their father's first of three marriages, adopt their teenage half-sister after his death strands her between his first and last broken family. So we get a kind of enclave or community of sisterhood, discreet,...

Chicago – Strike one of far too many: “Fifty Shades of Grey” author Erika Leonard (better known as E.L. James) has never lived the Bdsm lifestyle. And therefore, nor should she be writing about, romanticizing and profiteering on it. On a $40 million budget, the film earned $30.2 million on its opening Friday and is on track for a record-breaking international weekend grab of $158 million.
But this is as irresponsible as an author writing about rape who has never been. Anne Rice wrote “The Sleeping Beauty Quartet” (four erotic Bdsm novels under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure), but she was actually engaged in Bdsm with her husband. Experienced with it, Rice also wrote the Bdsm romance novels “Exit to Eden” and “Belinda” under the pen name Anne Rampling.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
While “Fifty Shades of Grey” is every trashy novelist’s dream, there are much better ones including Sylvia Day’s “Bared to You,” Leah Brooke’s “Crescendo,...

With the holiday season soft, it’s clear the 2014 domestic box office is going to wind up down from last year by nearly 5 percent. So why aren’t we hearing more groans and gnashing of teeth from Hollywood executives?
It’s because despite the downturn, the majority of the studios made money on their movies. Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros. and Sony should all — to varying degrees — wind up in the black on their film slates.
The fact that 2015 has a shot to be the biggest on record is brightening Hollywood’s mood, too. Among the heavyweight films set...

Summer Roberts is a mom! Rachel Bilson and boyfriend Hayden Christensen have welcomed their first child together, Us Weekly can exclusively confirm via multiple sources. The couple gave their baby girl a Disney princess-themed name -- Briar Rose! The adorable moniker is a nod to the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty; sheltering Princess Aurora from Maleficent's curse, the three fairies call the little girl Briar Rose. It's also the name that was used in the original Grimm Brothers fairy tale in 1812. Us broke the news back in May [...]...

Into the Woods has been crying out for a big screen adaptation since it launched on Broadway back in 1987.
With its combination of catchy songs, heartwarming moments, classic characters and pure fantasy, it is surprising that it has taken 27 years for a movie to be made. Despite winning several Tony Awards and revivals, it hasn't quite reached total mainstream status yet. That may be all about to change this Christmas thanks to the big screen adaptation.
In fact, a film version has been in the pipeline for over a decade. In the early 1990s, Columbia and Jim Henson Productions were developing a version starring the likes of Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn, Cher, Danny DeVito, Steve Martin and Roseanne Barr. A few years later, Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Susan Sarandon were attached.
After years of failed attempts, the project appears to be in good hands, as Chicago director Rob Marshall is behind the camera,...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"Maleficent"
Angelina Jolie's delectably over the top performance as the Sleeping Beauty villain will suck you in to this surprisingly dark take on the fairy tale - dark for Disney, anyway. Elle Fanning co-stars as Aurora, the beautiful but cursed young princess who shows Maleficent the true meaning of love. Sam Riley puts on an entertaining show as Diaval, Malficent's transmogrifying raven.
"Hercules"
If you've been wondering what Brett Ratner's been up to lately, well, here's your answer. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson pumped it up even more to play the mythic hero who is apparently now a mercenary for hire, along with a few other tough guys and one gal. If anything, take a gander at the fruit of Johnson's weight-lifting labor.

Ingmar Bergman bowed down to his peer, Andrei Tarkovsky, for having given life to the language of cinema as dream: “Tarkovsky is for me the greatest, the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as reflection, life as a dream.” This praise from one master to another was more than warranted, for the two auteurs’ bodies of work are arguably the most distinguishable in the canon of film history for their use of moving imagery, intricate mise-en-scène, and meaning that arises not only once in the frame or from an actor’s mouth but that ripples throughout the remainder of the world of the movie. Hey now, this is what dreams are made of.

It seems to me a kind of cruelty – a misuse of parental power – to raise a child solely on a cinematic diet of cheery animated animals, moral motor cars and fables of sisterly love. Such sunny stories foster optimism, anthropomorphism and an increased risk of jazz hands in later life. No, far better to nourish your offspring’s imagination with deeper darker fictions that dare to confront the creatures of their nightmares and let those interesting folk take centre stage. Anything to avert a future request for tap dance classes and stage school. Unabashed happiness can be an ugly, ugly thing.
For my generation, and many that preceded it, Disney’s Maleficent was such a creature. A menacing composite of every sorceress and dark queen who ever stalked a fairy tale kingdom – haughty, manipulative and ruthless with blood red nails and a penchant for arch-villain couture. Fairy tale reboots have been all the rage in Hollywood since dueling Snow White projects Mirror Mirror and Snow White & the Huntsman swept the box office back in 2012 and were swiftly followed by last year’s Jack the Giant Slayer, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Oz the Great and Powerful. Major studios aren’t over the trend just yet, with films like fairy-tale modge-podge Into the Woods and a Cinderella reboot in the works, but the revisionist fairy tale we’re most looking forward to is definitely this summer’s Maleficent.
Set to hit theaters in May, the tale charts the origins of the Sleeping Beauty sorceress (embodied by Angelina Jolie) and examines her descent into evil. Speaking with EW, the actress recently shed some light on the challenges of playing such an iconic villain. Discussing the goals of the film, she explained:
“The exercise wasn’t how can we have fun with a villain?...

New photos from the upcoming live-action Disney film Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and the young Vivian Jolie-Pitt, have been released.
Angelina Jolie On Acting With Her Daughter
Maleficent tells the story of the evil sorceress from Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty (1959) uncovering how she became such an evil creature. Fanning plays a teenage Princess Aurora, and she certainly looks the part, but finding a young child to play a young Aurora proved much more difficult as all the children they met with were too afraid of Jolie in full Maleficent makeup.
