Poking the Bear
lavatch21 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There was an eerie sense of realism to this film about a tenant, Vince James, who rents a room in a house from Faith Davis. The tenant suddenly becomes a nasty squatter, and the owner virtually becomes a displaced person. Such incidents are not uncommon today for landlords and home owners because the law has come to endow tenants with excessive "rights."

It may have been a stretch that Faith, who was a realtor, was so naive that she failed to run a thorough background check on Vince. As it turned out, his real name was Wayne Travers, who choked Sarah Malone when they were students at Valley Ridge High School. Apparently, Wayne was expelled, yet somehow became so erudite that he is now a professional tutor!

Faith may have been pushing the envelope when she started "poking the bear" by entering Vince/Wayne's room while he was sleeping and phoning his clients to ruin his prospects as a tutor.

Faith's ex-boyfriend Jeremy Higgins was identified by her bestie Jaden as "an emotionally stunted man-child." But Jeremy was worth his weight in gold when he came to the assistance of Faith against a complete nut case.

Overall, this was a compelling yarn with a solid ensemble cast. Angela Cole was terrific as Faith, and we look forward to seeing her in many more Lifetime films!

she's so stupid she deserves it

Warning: Spoilers
Okay so let's start with the premise. It's a good idea but so many flaws.

For one he has a whole as fake name that alone would void the contract.

Him beating himself up When everyone was there was stupid as well.

Like who rents a room without a background check? She kinda deserved it I swear.

Her friend is beyond useless. She's like oooh sleep with him then no he's weird then oh maybe you're overreacting.

Everyone was useless the cops, the lawyer, I swear it just made me angry.

The cop was the main stupid character.

Lifetime is lucky I'm so bored and keep falling for these movies lol plus they have hot guys.

Why didn't she CHANGE THE LOCKS??

A Roommate to Die For

Her first of many mistakes was even thinking about letting a stranger of the opposite sex move into her house - and then not even do a halfway thorough background check. For a supposedly intelligent realtor or real estate lawyer - whatever she was - that was careless and dumb. Taking a strange guy into your house, where you SLEEP, based on the fact he was charming during the initial interview. But the dumbest thing of all was not changing the locks when he left the night of the party. Oh and also install an alarm system while you're at it since it didn't seem like there was one in the house.

I could only shake my head and roll my eyes when she was driving back from the police station with Jeremy the next day, when he asked her if Vince would come back to the house and she said she didn't know and was scared. There would have been no way he could get back in the house if she would have changed the locks. He got the room under false pretenses and committed fraud by giving a false name on the lease, so that should have broken it for that reason alone, along with not paying half the bills like he had agreed to in writing. So she was within her rights to change the locks to keep him out.

The other blatantly stupid thing she did was confronting him with facts - including his real name and the assault he had committed in high school - when she was alone with him, without even so much as pepper spray hidden behind her back. At that point she knew he was potentially dangerous, yet she risked her life by "poking the bear" with nothing to defend herself with if he became violent.

And the worn out trope of the villain putting cameras all over the victim's house is in 8 out of 10 LMN movies and is so tiresome by now. And in this movie, there was really no point in it. I must admit it was clever for the villain to accuse the victim of putting a camera in his room, to keep suspicion off of him if the other cameras were found later on.

Disappointing to see the usual amount of Lifetime plotholes throughout, and factual mistakes such as Faith being given a restraining order just because she knows Jeremy, who supposedly assaulted Vince (but hadn't, of course). Courts do not issue restraining orders to people who know the perpetrator who committed the assault - only the perpetrator.

And I had to roll my eyes again near the end when Faith did what all victims in Lifetime movies do: managed to get the best of the villain and knock him down, but left the weapon lying within his reach instead of grabbing it to keep it away from him. She only went back and picked it up when Jeremy told her to, to get him untied.

Grade C / 4 out of 10.

Typical
chrsmil16747-673-1094801 February 2024
This is a typical lifetime movie naïve woman rents a Roman her home. Then a man moves in and acts like it's his home. He has wired to Home everywhere with cameras so we know how that's gonna turn out and all these people on this site claiming it was a fantastic movie must've than people in the movie because it wasn't that good, and there was no way in hell I would give it a tan, but two actually was pushing it. It was very obvious what was going on, and absolutely not suspenseful you knew what was going to happen next. The first time he went psycho on her she should've called the police just to at least get a report going.

Great film

"A Roommate to Die For" is a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The film masterfully weaves a tale of suspense and unexpected twists as it explores the dark side of shared living. The strong performances from the cast, coupled with the cleverly crafted plot, create an atmosphere of tension that lingers long after the credits roll. With its unpredictable storyline and a satisfying blend of mystery and psychological drama, "A Roommate to Die For" is a must-watch for fans of the genre. The blonde (Angela Cole) lead and Zane Haney were particularly excellent. I highly recommend.

.FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE
whhbn22 November 2023
This was a very solid film, the acting was GREAT, (ESPECIALLY) for a lifetime movie, and I had the pleasure of seeing it in theaters. The handsome villain of the film (played by Zane Haney) has a particularly strong performance. Good stage presence and incredible charismatic, twisted realism depicted by him that really steals the show. Killer looks to say the least. Watch this now!

I would recommend this if you are a fan of psychological thrillers, or romanticized horror movies with an attractive cast and a bit of violence. It is somewhat similar to YOU, and fans of similar dark sitcoms/horror films/psychological thrillers will enjoy. TRUE STORY TOO 10/10 ROCK&ROLL -AA.
