It has been six years since "Coraline," and director Henry Selick hasn't had much luck in trying to get a new project off the ground. A few years back, both Disney and Laika developed and subsequently canceled "The Shadow King," and the director's efforts to get it mounted elsewhere haven't yet panned out. He was also attached a while ago to helm "A Tale Dark And Grimm," but not much has been heard about it. However, Selick has found an exciting new creative partnership for a film that sounds right up his alley. Read More: Henry Selick's Scrapped Disney/Pixar Project Might Be Headed Back To Laika Variety reports that Selick will direct "Wendell And Wild," with Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key as part of the development team (the former co-wrote the script). And again, it sounds perfectly Selick-ian. “ ‘Wendell and Wild’ is a comedy about two scheming demon...

Wondering what you’ll watch when The Hunger Games franchise is over? We’ve got some ideas…
As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Now, not all of the adaptations on this list will see the light of day,...

While his recent stop-motion projects like The Graveyard Book and The Shadow King have had trouble getting off the ground, Henry Selick is hoping to have better luck with directing a live-action adaptation of Adam Gidwitz’s joyously disturbing and violent post-modern fairy tale novel, A Tale Dark And Grimm, in which Hansel and Gretel escape the frying pan of their own bleak narrative and land in the fire of eight other, equally horrifying Brothers Grimm tales. They must then fight to survive, hopefully without the use of crossbows and hand-cannons.The quirky, gory, and Gorey-esque story seems like a ...

It’s been a frustrating time for Henry Selick in the years since the success of Coraline. After a disappointing attempt to collaborate with Disney, he’s still at work on his latest animated offering, but now appears ready to leap into live action. Screen Daily reports that he’s made a deal to adapt A Tale Dark & Grimm.Adam Gidwitz’ book is the story of how Hansel & Gretel escape their own dark fairy tale, only to end up in eight other strange adventures. Along the way, they’re beheaded (and re-headed), dismembered, hunted, killed, brought back to life, sent to hell, and a number of other terrible fates en route to their happily ever after. Yup, sounds like something Selick could do well.“I remain completely enraptured by Adam Gidwitz’ marvellous book A Tale Dark & Grimm,” Selick says in a statement ferretted out by the trade magazine. “It’s a hilarious,...

Later this month marks the 20th anniversary of Henry Selick's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," a delightful stop motion fable from the imagination of Tim Burton and Disney that would eventually become something of a cultural phenomenon, complete with a yearly holiday redo of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion attraction and untold millions of dollars in merchandise sales. In the years since though, Selick's career has been unusually spotty, culminating in the out-and-out disaster that was his deal with Disney and Pixar to create four original films, which ended before the first movie could be completed (the studio terminated his contract and lost $50 million on the project). Well, never count a good animator down. FilmNation has just hired the director to helm "A Tale Dark & Grimm," a live action adaptation of a children's book by Adam Gidwitz that reinterprets the original Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. What's interesting about this is that it isn't an animated feature.
