The primary filming location was an antique home that had been empty for 12 years.
Premiered as part of Midnight Madness at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was picked up by Lionsgate for distribution. However, even though the film subsequently played at other festivals, it was not given a wide release until August 2013.
The masks in the film inspired the masks in the video game Hotline Miami.
The majority of the film was shot with handheld camera to increase tension.
