What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.
The 2011 sci-fi and 1982 fantasy films have come to HBO Max and are available to stream now.
“Marines don’t quit.”
Battle: Los Angeles, starring Aaron Eckhart, and from director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath Of The Titans), is the exciting story of a squad of U.S. Marines who become the last line of defense against a global invasion. It gets the military right than most war movies. Numerous Marine units assisted in filming and the movie contains some awesome scenes with Black Hawks,...

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

True Blood only finished its final and least impressive season six years ago, but it’s been decided that this is long enough to warrant the series being rebooted. Naturally, fans of the show are less than pleased with the announcement, and haven’t been shy in making their feelings known.
Social media reaction to any kind of reboot or remake is usually negative, but the news of True Blood being done again has provoked a particularly vocal outcry, where it didn’t involve people taking the opportunity to relive just how horny both the series was and it made them.

As we head into the last week of September, let’s look ahead at what’s coming to Amazon Prime in October. It’s the usual mix of great newly-licensed titles arriving at the top of the month and a range of original movies and TV shows dropping throughout the upcoming weeks. But, what with it being spooky season, this time Prime’s October haul is specifically geared towards giving you some scares during Halloween.
For starters, horror fans will not want to miss the launch of Blumhouse’s “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series with four original films going up across October. The first duo, Black Box and The Lie, land on Prime on October 6th. Then, a week later on the 13th, both Evil Eye and Nocturne debut. Anything with Blumhouse behind it is usually worth checking out, so make sure not to miss those.

We’re now just over halfway through September, so let’s turn our attention to what’s coming to Hulu next month. Every October, the streaming service celebrates “Huluween” by adding a bunch of new Halloween-themed content. And this year is no different, with countless classic movies going up on the site that you’ll want to check out to get you in the spooky mood as well as a few notable originals.
These include anthology series Monsterland (October 2nd) and horror comedy film Bad Hair (October 23rd), starring Lena Waithe, Vanessa Williams and Laverne Cox, from Dear White People director Justin Simien. Superhero fans will also want to catch supernatural-themed Marvel series Helstrom (October 16th). The final production from Marvel Television, it’s sadly already doomed to just the one season.

Gillian Jacobs hasn’t been on a film shoot for months, but that hasn’t kept the perpetually busy performer from landing plenty of work. The actress has spent the past few months in lockdown burning through various gigs, from recording the second season of the podcast “Blood Ties” to new voiceover work, including the comic book-inspired series “Invincible.” Jacobs and her “Community” cohorts even got in on the “Zoom reunion” fad early, putting on a charity-benefitting table read and Q&a in mid-May.
Predictably, the event renewed calls for a “Community” movie, though all Jacobs will say at this point is that she feels “lucky that I’m part of something where people want more of it.” For now, however, she has plenty on her plate, including a burgeoning career as a documentary filmmaker.
And she’s on the virtual promotional trail for her latest indie gem: Kris Rey...

The 24th edition of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) closed off on Thursday in limited capacity, finishing up the first fully-hybrid film festival in the world. Unlike many of its peers this year, Bifan hosted screenings in-theaters (at 35% capacity) alongside its online program on local streaming service Watcha. Because of the in-person offering, Bifan unwittingly witnessed the world premiere of more films than originally intended, including Annecy contender “Beauty Water”. The famous genre film festival has stood as a monumental alternative to the popular online festival format.
Among this year’s winners, German production “Pelican Blood” (Katrin Gebbe) won Best of Bucheon with raving reviews. Pouya Aminpori’s Iranian short “The Third Person” championed the Best Short Film, and regularly sold-out screenings “Saint Maud” and “Sheep Without a Shepherd” carved out their own fair share of recognition. Perhaps the most stand-out feature in the festival, however, is Kim Lok-kyong’s first feature,...

Wondery, the indie podcast producer and network, has launched a dedicated app that features its lineup of original programming. The hope: that the new Wondery App will grab more listeners by the ear — and have them part with cold, hard cash to listen to its shows ad-free.
Hernan Lopez, founder and CEO of four-year-old Wondery, touts the new app as having a user interface and personalized features closer to mobile apps for services like Netflix or Hulu than traditional podcast-listening apps. The Wondery App is available as a free download for iPhone from Apple’s App Store (at this link) and as a beta version for Android (at this link).
While the Wondery App is free — and users can listen to thousands of episodes for free, with ads — the goal is to upsell fans to the Wondery Plus subscription service. Launched in early 2019, Wondery Plus costs $4.99 per month or $34.99 for an annual subscription.

Matthias Schoenaerts has always been a bit of a conundrum: a brilliant actor in the body of a supermodel bruiser. Maybe that’s why, even though he’s from Belgium, he has long been drawn to a certain kind of rough-and-tumble American art thriller — like “The Drop,” or the criminally overlooked “Blood Ties” (where he was mesmerizing as an outer-borough lowlife), or last year’s “Red Sparrow,” in which he played a Russian intelligence officer with a lurid gleam that made him seem like the cutthroat son of Vladimir Putin.
“The Mustang,” set in a remote prison compound nestled in the Nevada desert, is by comparison a much more lyrical and restrained movie. It’s about the bond between a hardened prisoner and a wild horse, and it’s been made, by the first-time director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, in a style of great-plains minimalism that feels, at times, like it...

Marion Cotillard and her partner Guillaume Canet have reteamed to star in the film “Rock’n Roll.” This time the duo, who previously worked together on “Blood Ties” and “Little White Lies,” portray themselves in this meta showbiz comedy.
After Canet is told by a young co-star that he’s not “rock’n roll” enough and can’t sell films anymore, the actor then tries to prove her wrong by getting help from his wife and actress Marion Cotillard. The first trailer (via The Playlist) doesn’t include subtitles but it has enough fun scenes that show the actors in sticky situations, and helps you understand the narrative.

After working together on Little White Lies and Blood Ties, for the third time this decade Guillaume Canet has directed his partner Marion Cotillard. The film, titled Rock’n Roll, doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet, but it’ll arrive in France early next year and so it’s time for the first international trailer.
A drama with a meta spin, Canet and Cotillard play themselves, with the latter telling the former he’s not rock ‘n’ roll enough, so he “freaks out” and goes to learn from the French king of rock, Johnny Hallyday. While the first trailer is free of subtitles, one can see the meta elements at play with awards shows and studio back lots. Canet, whose last film was co-scripted by James Gray, hasn’t quite had the U.S break-out that some other French contemporaries have had, but hopefully this one gets some attention here.

This review is an updated version of our review of the PC version and the game’s two Dlc packs.
Some people might dismiss it as yet another action-adventure title, but I still hold great respect for Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the Tomb Raider series. Rebooting a series is difficult enough, but when you’re talking about Tomb Raider, a series that has such a long and illustrious history, the stakes are that much higher.
Tomb Raider (or Tomb Raider 2013 as some might call it) played it safe in many ways. Drawing inspiration from other games such as Uncharted, the rigid controls and less-than-fluid gunplay were ditched in favor of more freeform traversal and a much more manageable combat system, with an emphasis on melee and Lara’s now trademark bow and arrow.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is hitting PS4 soon, and we take that time to celebrate 20 years of the franchise.
Crystal Dynamics may not be the original creators of the franchise, but they are celebrating 20 years of Tomb Raider by releasing a new trailer for Rise of Tomb Raider. The game is hitting PS4 next week. The original Tomb Raider released back in 1996!
Also cool is that anyone that plays the game on any platform next week (before October 19th) will get 100,000 credits towards Tomb Raider's Expedition Card Packs. The only "catch" is that you need to be connected to the internet.
The 20 year celebration game comes with additional content titled "Blood Ties" along with all previously released Dlc in one package. Xbox One and PC will also see the new content. Additionally PS4's version will also get Vr support.

Few gaming characters hold a candle to Lara Croft. In the space of two decades, the dual-wielding heroine has cemented her status as a bona fide industry mascot, going on to inspire a media franchise that will continue with the release of the Alicia Vikander-fronted movie reboot in 2018.
But 2016 marks a special milestone for Miss. Croft in that our esteemed archaeologist is celebrating her 20th anniversary, and just in time for the arrival of Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4. It’s due to release on October 11 and to ramp up excitement, developer Crystal Dynamics has premiered the stunning launch trailer along with a gallery of high-res images that show Lara in action.

In light of September’s PS4 Pro reveal, one of the big questions going into the crowded fall season will be whether a new release supports Sony’s mid-generation hardware upgrade out of the box. As previously reported, this is something the Japanese platform-holder will leave in the hands of developers – first-party studios notwithstanding – as compatibility is measured on a case-by-case basis. Lara Croft fans needn’t worry, though.
That’s because Rise of the Tomb Raider will be take full advantage of PS4 Pro’s hardware capabilities, including 4K and Hdr (High Dynamic Range) support. However, the trailer released by Sony, seen above, is capped at 1080p. We’ll update this post though if and when the 4K version becomes available.

Marion Cotillard's partner Guillaume Canet is speaking out against rumors that Cotillard had an affair with her Allied costar Brad Pitt, or that she had any role in his divorce from Angelina Jolie. "I don't usually make it a habit to comment on rumors made about us," the actor-director, 42, wrote in French on Instagram Friday, alongside a picture of a "Danger" road sign. "I also don't usually talk about my private life which until now I've always protected attentively ... Wondering how all the DC universe TV spin-offs, crossovers and webseries fit together? We have the answer...
In October 2012, Us network The CW launched the first season of Arrow, after wrapping up no fewer than ten seasons of Superman origin show Smallville a year before. Arrow was a completely new take on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, in a new universe that had nothing to do with Smallville or its version of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. The series proved quite the hit for The CW, and a second season renewal inevitably followed. In season two, we were introduced to forensic scientist Barry Allen, better known to DC Comics readers as The Flash. Arrow got a third season, The Flash got his own TV show with great success, and the live action shared DC Comics universe on TV was born. And with it the question: how does it all fit together?...
