Recently we have learned that Nathan Fillion, star of the cult television series Firefly and the film Serenity, has joined the cast of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events for its second season. In the past Fillion has appeared in many comic book films as a voice actor. He is mostly known for voicing Hal Jordan in some of DC's animated films like Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox and Justice League: Doom. He has one live action comic book role in Guardians of the Galaxy, in the form of an unnamed Kyln prisoner that Groot take easily takes out.
He recently had a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which unfortunately got cut. In the same way we saw a Batman poster during Man of Steel, Fillion's cameo, or easter egg if you want to call it that instead,...

Interview conducted by and copyright Edward Gross Man of Steel storyboard artist Jay Oliva has had a long career in animation, where has has brought his storyboarding skills to such TV shows as Extreme Ghostbusters, RoboCop: Alpha Commando, Godzilla: The Series, The Batman, Justice League and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, as well as the animated films Superman: Dooomsday, All-Star Superman, and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Additionally, he's directed Young Justice, Batman: The Dark Night Returns and the soon to be released Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, among others. In the first part of Vfk's interview with Oliva, we look at the action of Man of Steel, particularly the last twenty minutes or so, exploring the thought process that went into those sequences and, of course, the controversy that has surrounded it. Voices From Krypton: I liked Man of Steel the first time, and I liked it even more the second time.

It’s a great week for comic book fans with Iron Man 3 finally released on Thursday in the UK, and Thor: The Dark World getting its first trailer yesterday and being met with positive reception. Quite frankly, we didn’t think this week could get any more awesome… well that was until Nathan Fillion got us thinking about a fantasy casting we could see in the future. And it’s a doozy!
A fan recently tweeted the Castle and former Firefly actor asking the speculative question that he was to be cast in a Marvel movie, then what role would he like to play?
Now, Nathan has been a fan favourite for many comic book movies for a while now. Fans have wanted him as everything from The Green Lantern to Star Lord to Mysterio, and this vocal support even got him to voice Hal Jordan in the animated movie Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

Many fans were impressed with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1; they (and we) felt that DC Universe managed to adapt Frank Miller’s game-changing Batman tale into a properly dark and uncompromising animated feature, which honored the source material in all the right ways.
Needless to say, anticipation is high for the epic finale that’s coming with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 – and today we have some clips and images from the film to appease you before its imminent release on DVD/Blu-ray. Check them out and enjoy!

Years in the making, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns was never intended to rewrite the rules for the Caped Crusader or become the template for a generation of storytelling. It was, though, the culmination of a series of events that occurred at DC Comics and in Miller’s professional development that nicely dovetailed together. The right book, character, and creator all arrived at the right time, when an audience was ready to accept the radical re-imagining.
Ever since the four-part story heralded the arrival of the Prestige Format and was the first entry in the current field of graphic novels, The Dark Knight Returns has been an influential touchstone to storytellers. Its use of character, page construction, color, and theme showed that four-color heroes can be used for darker concepts, exploring new ideas. As a result, people have been clamoring to see it adapted for the screen, any screen,...

Last week, Joss Whedon returned to our screens with the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Cabin in the Woods, with which Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) made his directorial debut to brilliant critical acclaim, with a script he co-wrote with Whedon.
This week, Whedon returns once more to our home entertainment systems with the release of The Avengers, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It’s been one we’ve been looking forward to ever since its release, and now it has arrived for us to bask in its awesomeness once more.
My picks of the week:
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers & Jay Oliva’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1.
And Bond 50 – the complete 22-film James Bond collection on Blu-ray.

Warner Brothers has released the first clip from the upcoming animated feature Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 starring Ariel Winter as Robin, Peter Weller as Batman, Michael Emerson as Joker, and Michael McKean. The feature is helmed by DC veteran Jay Oliva who also directed Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and has been doing some outstanding work on Young Justice. The voice cast along with Oliva's past work should suffice to get any fan of DC animation excited, but if that's not enough the first clip below (along with the previously released trailer) offers a nice teaser that goes a long way towards affirming that its September 25th release date is much, much too far off. (And if you're paying attention you'll notice the moment Christopher Nolan nodded to in The Dark Knight Rises.)

If you just can't get enough of The Dark Knight, Warner Brothers has got you covered with their latest upcoming direct-to-dvd animated feature based on Frank Miller's seminal graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. Apparently they have decided to divide the story into two parts, both directed by Jay Oliva (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Doctor Strange), and part 1 will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray in September. Peter Weller (Robocop) provides the voice for Batman while other stars include David Selby as Comissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter as Robin, Wade Williams as Two-Face, and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper. Although I like this recent trend of adapting big graphic novels (they did Batman: Year One and All-Star Superman last year), somehow these films still seem to be a little bit too sanitized and the artist's style is mostly absent. The trailer for the film has arrived online over at MTV,...

Check out a new clip and some new images from D.C. and Warner Bros.’ “Superman vs. The Elite”, the latest in their line of original animated movies based on D.C.’s characters. Basically, it’s the Batman/Superman original movie line for all the variety they offer. I wish they would do some other characters, but I guess Bats and Supes sells. In Superman Vs. The Elite, Superman’s effectiveness as a super hero comes into question when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As super heroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical, yet preferably non-lethal Man of Steel. “Superman vs. The Elite” is directed by Michael Chang (“Batman: Brave and the Bold”), and is...

Published in 1986, Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns had a profound impact on the current pop culture take on The Batman. Released at a time when comic books weren't considered capable of rising above juvenile status, Tdkr showed us a grim, stark future for a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne. Long since retired from being the Batman, Bruce decides to put on his cape and cowl again to battle a new breed of Gotham City criminal. That sets the stage for Batman's final confrontations with The Joker, Two-Face and a fight-to-the-death street brawl with none other than the Man of Steel, Superman.
Warner Bros. Animation had already announced plans to adapt Miller's The Dark Knight Returns into a direct-to-video animated movie. Today we learned who would provide the voices for some of the show's cast members.

Chicago – The DC Universe brand of straight-to-dvd PG-13 films have had a remarkable array of quality. Some are absolutely brilliant, must-see films (“Justice League: The New Frontier,” “Batman: Under the Red Hood”) while others are kind of a mess (“Wonder Woman.” “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights”). In other words, you never know what you’re going to get when you pop in a new entry in the hit franchise. The 13th film, “Justice League: Doom.” is not a lucky one.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Loosely based on “Jla: Tower of Babel” by Marc Waid, a multi-episode arc that was released in 2000, “Doom” is easily the most disjointed and inconsistent DC Universe film yet. The voice talent is spectacular, featuring a number of all-time favorites when it comes to DC animation (Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rosenbaum), but that’s where the praise ends. The story doesn’t resonate and the visuals are mediocre.

Justice League: Doom I've complained before about the inexplicable need for the DC Animated Universe features to be so bloody short. Only the anthology Green Lantern: Emerald Knights has run over 80 minutes and at least two (Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies) were barely an hour. For whatever reason, the 13 features since late 2007 have all hovered around the 75 minute mark, and it's almost always been a point of contention. But this time around, that truncated running time has become a fatal flaw, as this loose adaptation of a 2000 Justice League of America arc ends up sacrificing the entire dramatic crux of the story. All that's left, while not boring, is a rather route pure action tale with one large-scale set piece after another. And by holding off the story's key reveal until near the end of the picture, the film ends up being a giant set-up to...

Warner Bros. Animation continues to pump out movie straight to DVD DC Comics movies, and today it's been announced that they are developing Justice League Doom which will be inspired by Mark Waid's Tower of Babel storyline.
The story finds Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Batman on their heels when a team of super villains discover and implement the Dark Knight’s “contingency plans” for stopping any rogue Justice League member. The film stars the voice talent of Nathan Fillion, Kevin Conroy, Michael Rosenbaum and Tim Daly.
The DC comics animated movie are hit and miss for me. Some I like other I hate. The most recently film I saw was Batmas: Year One, and even though the animation was good, I didn't care for how it was brought to life. The direction was off, especially with the voice acting.

Chicago – After a few releases that felt like perhaps the DC Universe line of straight-to-video animated films were in decline, they recently released what is arguably their best installment and a work that deserves to sit on the shelf of any Batman fan — the often-brilliant “Batman: Year One.” So remarkably loyal to one of the most influential comic books of all time that it sometimes recreates it verbatim and including some of the best voice work in the entire DC Universe line, this is a great animated film and possibly the best Blu-ray gift you could buy for a comic fan this season.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Everyone should read Frank Miller’s stunning and incredibly influential book but this adaptation reminds one why that was such an important story in the DC Universe. The grit that you love from Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, even the look and feel of the...

As a comic book reader there are many reasons to love Nathan Fillion, star of the ABC cult hit drama Castle. If you missed the latest episode then you didn’t get to see an entire episode devoted to comic books, super heroes and super villains. Fillion has also lent his voice for a handful of DC Animated original movies including Steve Trevor in the 2008 Wonder Woman animated film, and then starred in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights as the Hal Jordan Green Lantern. He will reprise that latter role in the first 2012 DC Universe Animated film release, Justice League: Doom for Warner Home Video. Again, even though he’s our dream Hal Jordan, at least we get to see Fillion play him in what DC Entertainment does best, animated films. Voicing alongside Fillion are an all-star cast of DC Animated veteran actors including Tim Daly (Superman/ Batman: Apocalypse) as Superman,...

Nathan Fillion and Justice League Doom Line-Up
What is more geektastic than the mere mention of the names Nathan Fillion and Michael Rosenbaum? How about those names mentioned in relation to the Justice League: Doom! Yes, somewhere a fanboy’s head just exploded. In a good way!
On his lonesome, Nathan Fillion is best known as Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly and Serenity, also known as Joss Whedon created geek candy. Yes, I’m a geek myself, so I can say these things. Fillion also happens to star as Richard Castle on the popular ABC series called Castle.
Likewise, Michael Rosenbaum, one of my many celebrity crushes, used to play Lex Luthor on the CW’s Smallville.
Together this pair represents sci fi and comic books in Hollywood. The question is, will they use their powers for good or for evil?
Fillion will reprise his voice acting work as the Green Lantern.
