Nicholas Meyer's 1982 sci-fi flick "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was the first major acting gig for Kirstie Alley. Up to that point, Alley had only appeared on the sci-fi sitcom "Quark" as well as a few game shows like "Match Game." Alley wasn't even wholly devoted to acting at that stage, treating it more like a side-hustle than a career. It wouldn't be until she started auditioning for "Star Trek II" that she decided to focus on acting exclusively.
The circumstances surrounding Alley's audition are rather tragic, sadly. In the middle of the process, her mom was killed in a car accident and her father was left seriously injured. She stayed next to her father's bedside and Paramount, rather surprisingly, let her take all the time she needed. She spoke to her comatose father every day, telling him all about how she wanted to be an actor now,...

Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal doesn’t follow a North Star as she and her team sift through tens of thousands of submissions each year. But as they whittle down those applicants to the 100 or so films comprising the final lineup, themes tend to emerge.
“It’s not like we set out to say, ‘This is what we want to do.’ As an activist film festival, we always look for [political] films,” says Rosenthal, who created Tribeca Festival with Robert De Niro in the wake of 9/11. “This year, there’s a mental health narrative. I don’t know if that’s a post-covid thing.”
Tribeca, now in its 23rd year, will take place from June 5-16 and highlight films led by Kristen Stewart, Lily Gladstone and Jenna Ortega. “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” a look at the fashion icon and entrepreneur, will open the festival, with anticipated documentaries about Prince,...

"Deadpool and Wolverine" — which is due out on July 26, 2024 — will mark Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine after a seven year hiatus. (I remember vividly when 2017's "Logan" was supposed to be his final bow.)
Ever since superhero movies have become Marvel and DC's biggest cultural footprints, the comics have had the mandate to follow their lead. The adaptations point the direction of the source material, not the other way around.
Take how, in the 2010s, Marvel relegated the X-Men from the top shelf to the dustbin because 20th Century Fox owned the mutants' movie rights. Once Marvel's parent company Disney acquired Fox (and the X-Men with it) in 2019, the X-Men were raised back up. "Deadpool and Wolverine" is the greatest culmination of that merger yet, with the film's trailers suggesting the Merc with a Mouth is entering the MCU full-throttle — and bringing the rest of Fox's Marvel films along with him.

Spanish cinema is expanding, opening up attractive film avenues to reach the worldwide market, driven by upscale commercial projects, blending of genres and a new generation of emerging female directors.
The country’s filmmakers landed three Oscar nominations: Juan A. Bayona with “Society of the Snow” (inter- national feature and makeup and hair styling); and Pablo Berger with “Robot Dreams” (animated feature). Also, four of Netflix’s top five most-popular non-English films ever are from Spain.
“The boom in talent is making for a unique and very diverse cinema,” says Guillermo Farré, Movistar Plus+ head of original films and Spanish cinema.
“The great foreign perception of Spanish cinema is driven by the productions’ quality and their international diffusion,” says Elástica Films’ María Zamora, producer of Carla Simón’s Berlinale Golden Bear winner “Alcarrás.”

Yak with Dak
The big news teased last issue is that Comics Interview is increasing its page count. Dak says now he may finally be able to put all of the features teased in #1 in one single issue. Just taking a quick comparison sample from this and the previous issue the page count has gone from 67 to 83. The amount of full-page ads has seen an increase from 24 to 32 which is a better balance between interviews and ads. There is a four-page ad in this issue which may not always be the case so that number can vary going forward. Lastly taking the two-part Doug Moench interview that started with a...

Sales and production company Other Angle is hoping to drum up remake interest for upcoming French comedy A Little Something Extra with a screening at the fourth edition of its French Comedy Club in L.A. this weekend.
Actor and comedian Artus directs and co-stars with Clovis Cornillac as father and son bank robbing team, who infiltrate a bus taking a group of disabled youngsters to a holiday camp, in a bid to escape the police. The cast is made up mainly of youngsters with different types of disability.
Other Angle co-founder Olivier Albou suggests the comedic storyline, the disabled cast and sensitive storytelling makes for a rare combination.

Bobby Farrelly’s sports comedy film “Champions” is among the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation awardees — an award that recognizes productions that practice inclusion and portray authentic representations of people with disabilities in the entertainment industry.

The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive had a fantastic run from the late ’80s through much of the ’90s. The 16-bit era was the first time gamers got to experience a meaningful console war and while you can debate whether or not it was superior to the Snes, there were so many fantastic games out there worth playing. Gaming was evolving and kids were eating well.
With about a thousand titles in its library, not every Genesis game could be a hit. There were some titles that missed the mark more than others. Presents that ruined birthdays. Rentals that ruined weekends. Trades that ruined friendships. Buyer’s remorse that can stain one’s very soul. Let’s take a second to celebrate the Genesis titles that aspired to be an earl but ended up as lowly as toe jam.
15. The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants
There was a special strangeness to early Simpsons games.

Malaga, Spain — Traditionally, until a few years back, a Spanish film industry debate led to a “Wall of Laments” which ended up as a call for increased governmental support.
That was then. €70 million ($76.8 million) in 2023, €100 million ($109 million) last year, Spain’s Icaa film institute budget could add another €30 million ($32.7 million) with a little luck this year, said Rocío Juanas de Toledo, its secretary general at a panel, Spanish Cinema Models Examined, one of the key industry debates at this week’s Malaga Festival.
Panelists represented Spain’s three biggest content investors – Movistar Plus+, Atresmedia and Rtve – and two top producers: Morena Films and Elástica Films.
It took speakers less than two minutes to zero in on Spain’s biggest immediate challenge: Its still underperforming box office, down 24% on pre-pandemic levels.
“Our major concern is how to recuperate the cinema theater audiences we had before the pandemic,” said Jaime Ortiz, Atresmedia Cine director general.

Two Spanish female stars who have broken out to huge global audiences in Netflix hits – “Nowhere” and “A Perfect Story” lead Anna Castillo and Ester Expósito, highly prominent in “Elite” in early seasons – are set to star in dramedic vampire thriller “Death to Love,” (“Que muera el amor”), the first series created by “Piggy” director Carlota Pereda, who will also serve as its showrunner.
“If there are two actresses you can believe are immortals, with their out-of-this-world allure and talent, it’s Anna and Ester. I can’t wait to explore this world of darkness, joy and Eternal Love with them,” Pereda told Variety.
With that talent package, and the backing of two Spanish powerhouse producers, Morena Films and Buendía Estudios, “Death to Love” is shaping up as one of the hottest packages to come to market from Spain after it emerged from February’s Berlinale Series Market as one...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Anonymous Content and Spain’s Morena Films, behind box office breakouts “Cell 211” and Champions, have named former Studiocanal executive Beatriz Campos as the managing director of their Spain-based film-tv production venture Anonymous Content España.
Campos will oversee the company’s day-to-day operations working closely with David Davoli, Anonymous Content’s president of international, and Morena Films CEO Pilar Benito, Anonymous Content and Morena Films announced Monday. Launched in May 2023, Anonymous Content España aims to develop and produce premium Spanish projects for a global market.
That is easily said, but several factors work in its favor and will be aided now by Campos’ appointment. As film and TV producers still battle a hugely competitive market and spiralling production costs, companies are reaching out for partners beyond national markets, a structure embodied in Anonymous Content España. Anonymous can also help Morena access U.S.-stars, which may allow their productions to stand out in the crowd.

Match #1: Santos Escobar def. Carlito The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Following months of tumultuous blindsides and sneak attacks, Carlito and Santos Escobar finally squared off one-on-one. Former Legado del Fantasma member Elektra Lopez shockingly made her debut, attacking Zelina Vega and distracting Carlito. This allowed Escobar to take advantage, rolling up Carlito for the win.
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship – The Kabuki Warriors def. Katana Chance & Kayden Carter The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Dialing the clock back to 2019, The Kabuki Warriors are once again your new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. Chance and Carter threw caution to the wind in their defense but were unable to vanquish Asuka and Kairi Sane.

Dumb And Dumber’s Peter Farrelly’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky for Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the trailer and some details…
The Farrelly Brothers will forever be synonymous with slapstick, gross-out comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, both of which are, gag for gag, among the funniest films of the 1990s.
Apart from belated sequel Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, the brothers have concentrated on solo projects. In recent years, Peter Farrelly has directed acclaimed 2018 film Green Book, while Bobby directed underrated 2023 comedy Champions.
Peter’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky, a comedy which sounds a bit like Drop Dead Fred or Ted. The synopsis reads as follows:
When three childhood best friends pull a prank gone wrong, they invent the imaginary Ricky Stanicky to get them out of trouble! Twenty years after creating this “friend,” Dean, Jt, and Wes still use the nonexistent...

The final game of Week 2 of Jeopardy!‘s Second Chance tournament took place on Monday, January 1, which included one frustrating category that had all three contestants stumped. Former Season 39 players Christopher Pennant, a sports journalist and announcer from Chicago, Illinois; Xanni Brown, a post-doc researcher from Cincinnati, Ohio; and Greg Czaja, a cardiologist from San Diego, California, returned to the Alex Trebek Stage with the hopes of making it into the upcoming Champions Wildcard competition. Things started smoothly in the Jeopardy! round, with each contestant answering clues correctly in categories such as Haunting Literature, Native Americans, Movies By Google Search, People, It’s An Ex-Car For A Reason, and Crossword Clues “C.” But it was the Double Jeopardy! round where things turned a little tricky, especially under the Misheard Lyrics category, which required the players to name a song (or artist) based on misinterpreted song lyrics. Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.

When Jeopardy! returned for its Second Chance and Champions Wildcard tournaments back in September, it came with a new rule, which sees contestants required to read out the entire category name each time they select a new clue. However, this new rule might not stick around much longer, as many viewers have complained that it disrupts the flow of the show, especially when the category names are a mouthful, like last Thursday’s (December 7) “During Lou Gehrig’s Consecutive Game Streak.” Jeopardy‘s long-time producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss and former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen addressed the backlash on the latest Inside Jeopardy! podcast, with Foss explaining why they introduced the rule change in the first place. “We’ve seen the chatter online about contestants reading the full category, which is a change to the rules this season,” Cohen brought up, though Foss disagreed with the term “rule.” “Not really a rule,...

In fact, you can think of them more like the coaches you see on NBC’s sister reality TV show “The Voice.” Terry Crews has been slated to once again return for hosting duties.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Netflix could be ready to expand its sports streaming portfolio beyond a golf tournament.
Walking before running is one thing, but Netflix seemingly wants to make sure it has crawling down before even attempting to stand on two legs in the live sports streaming game. The world’s largest streaming service recently announced details for itsplans to host a live golf tournament featuring celebrities from its shows “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing,” but so far that is the only sports content the service has attempted to offer.
Netflix is reportedly mulling the addition of a live boxing match featuring YouTuber Jake Paul. The proposed boxing match would be Netflix’s second live sporting event ever. Netflix executives have resisted sports streaming in the past, but these events could signal a change in company thinking. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.

Former Jeopardy! champion Pasquale Palumbo, who recently returned to the show for the Champions Wildcard tournament, has opened up about his experience and shared a few behind-the-scenes nuggets and tips for future contestants. In an article written for LAVOCEDiNewYork.com, Palumbo spoke of the thrill of receiving an invite to compete on Champions Wildcard. The currently airing tournament sees brief champs from Seasons 37 and 38 returning to the Alex Trebek Stage to earn a spot in the upcoming Tournament of Champions. “When my phone rang and the caller ID showed that it was one of the contestant coordinators from Jeopardy!, I felt like a Death Row convict getting a stay of execution. I was really going to get another chance at something most players can only dream about,” said Palumbo, who was a one-day champion in Season 37. “So few of us get to play once on the show; still fewer become Champions,...

Kendall. Robinson. Duker. Ó’Briain. Martin. The fight is On.
The winners of Taskmaster series 11-15 are currently doing sit-ups, drinking pints of raw egg, and running up and down the steps outside Chiswick Library. They’re in training for Taskmaster’s third Champion of Champions contest.
A little reminder of the contenders for this title now, on account of the internet having destroyed everybody’s attention spans, and shrunk our ability to retain information for longer than it takes a toaster to pop.
Champion of Champions 3 Line-Up Sarah Kendall
Representing series 11 is the magnificently-maned Sarah Kendall, Australian comic, writer and actor. She’s technically the dunce of this operation going in with a whole-series points score of just 158, but a dynamite chick like her isn’t about to let that get in the way. The woman’s ready for the apocalypse at all times, do not underestimate her.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the October 23 episode of Jeopardy!] What some might have thought would be an easy category was anything but for the three contestants as the Champions Wildcard competition continued on Jeopardy!, with players from Seasons 37 and 38 who won in their initial appearances but not enough games to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. (The winner will earn a spot in the ToC.) During the Jeopardy! round, Leah Wiegand, Pasquale Palumbo, and Isaac Applebaum were faced with the category “Stupid Proverbs.” While Isaac got the $200 clue correct, things took a turn starting with the $400 one. “An American proverb says, ‘Money begets’ this” read the clue. Leah guessed “wealth” and was wrong, as was Pasquale with “problems.” Host Ken Jennings chimed in with “True, but not right, so no,” ...

Indie films have scored some impressive figures at Spanish box office this year.
As the Spanish film industry comes together at Valladolid International Film Week (known locally as the Seminici), one of the big talking points will be how to make independent films stand out at the local box office.
Although Spain’s box office in the year to mid-October has grossed €400m, 35% higher than the same period in 2022, it is still 17% lower than the 2015-2019 pre-Covid average.
US studio blockbusters led the charge, headed by Barbie ($35.2m), Super Mario Bros. Movie ($29m), Avatar: The Way Of Water, ($26.9m) Oppenheimer...

Law & Order: Organized Crime star Christopher Meloni and award-winning sportscaster Katie Nolan squared off on Wednesday’s (October 11) edition of Celebrity Jeopardy! in a tense tie-breaker showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats. Meloni and Nolan were two of the three celebrity contestants alongside The View co-host Sherri Shepherd. All three showed competitive spirit, but all eyes were on Meloni due to his previous Jeopardy! experience, having appeared on the show in 2006 and 2009. However, it was Nolan who ended up stealing the show, quickly getting out to a lead and leaving her opponents in the dust. The Friday Night Baseball commentator told host Ken Jennings that she and her husband watch the show nightly and that Tournament of Champions finalist Sam Buttrey is her “favorite contestant ever.” Celebs are just like us: they love Sam Buttrey! #CelebrityJeopardy! pic.twitter.com/GBJJY2e3co — Jeopardy!
