Tom Bower, the busy character actor who portrayed Dr. Curtis Willard on The Waltons and the janitor, Marvin, who helps John McClane foil the terrorists at the airport in Die Hard 2, has died. He was 86.
Bower died last week of an unknown cause at his home in Los Angeles, his brother, Robert Bower, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Bower worked on John Cassavetes’ directorial debut, Shadows (1957), and played one of the translators that make a mess of things in the acclaimed Western The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982), starring Edward James Olmos.
He portrayed the father of the 37th U.S. president in Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995), starring Anthony Hopkins, and the father of Nicolas Cage’s Terence McDonagh in Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009).

A Deadly Invitation is a Mexican mystery thriller movie directed by José Manuel Cravioto. It stars Maribel Verdú, Stephanie Cayo, and Manolo Cardona. The film is based on the novel “Invitación a un Asesinato” by best-selling author Carmen Posadas.
The film follows Agatha, a true crime podcast host who is invited to a gathering at her sister’s, Olivia’s, luxurious yacht for a weekend getaway together with a group of her closest friends. The reason for the gathering is unknown to all. As the guests arrive on the yacht, tensions begin to rise culminating in… a murder.
A Deadly Invitation A Quick Review
If you are into Agatha Christie, and however many film and series adaptations of her novels have been produced over time, I recommend this movie.

The Adults is a family comedy-drama film, but it is R-rated because of its adult language. Written & Directed by Dustin Guy Defa, The Adults follows Eric as he takes a short trip back home to meet his sisters and old friends but the short trip turns into a mess of unresolved familial issues and a trip down the nostalgic lane. Michael Cera is producing and starring in the film. So, if you like The Adults, here are some similar movies you could watch next.

All the Places (A Todas Partes) is a mexican movie directed by Pedro Pablo Ibarra starring Ana Serradilla and Mauricio Ochmann.
This tender story of a reunion between two siblings comes from Mexico with lots of sentiment and nostalgia and a big desire to make us have a good time in something between comedy and drama.
This is a story that works almost always and this time too.
A remake of 25 km/h.
This is a movie that treads a beaten path, does so well and this play to make us fall in love “invertedly” works. Not long ago we commented Raymond & Ray, another film that took a gamble on a reunion between siblings at the funeral of their father: same plot, but different result in the screenplay.

The last time Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu released three new movies in the space of the same year was 2006. By then, their reputations at home had been established by early successes like Y tu mamá también (Cuarón), The Devil’s Backbone (del Toro) and Amores Perros (Iñárritu) and they had each worked in the U.S., with del Toro and Cuarón stepping into blockbuster cinema with Hellboy and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban respectively, and Iñárritu directing Sean Penn and Naomi Watts to Oscar nominations with 21 Grams.
When they donned tuxedos to celebrate the 79th Academy Awards together on February 25, 2007, “The Three Amigos,” as they’d been dubbed, might have considered the evening a high watermark in their respective careers. Iñárritu had been Best Director and Best Picture nominated for Babel; Del Toro had a nod for his Original Screenplay for Pan...

Cartoon Saloon’s “My Father’s Dragon” (streaming on Netflix November 11), the whimsical 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, got some Oscar heat this week by winning the Special Jury prize at the Animation Is Film Festival. It’s quite a contrast to Irish director Nora Twomey’s Oscar-nominated directorial debut, “The Breadwinner,” based on Deborah Ellis’ popular YA novel about Afghan oppression.
But the mere suggestion that “My Father’s Dragon” is kid-friendlier registers a protest from the director. The tone might be gentler, but the themes of parenting and puberty are very complex, she insists.

Plot: Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies – and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him.
Review: Of the actors working today, few are more reliable than Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. Both actors have done their fair share of genre work and both have recently been involved in the comic book industrial complex, both as villains. While Ethan Hawke has made his disdain for mainstream filmmaking quite clear, both actors have done admirable work with roles that would have been underwhelming in the hands of other actors. When the two actors were set to share the screen in Raymond & Ray, I expected something special as the pair play adult siblings coping with the death of their abusive father. This review originally posted Sept. 3, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Near the rousing climax of Santiago Mitre’s courtroom procedural “Argentina, 1985,” making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, an affecting phone call between a mother and a son shines as an ideological lighthouse, offering the promise that people’s long-held beliefs can evolve for the better. And if one individual can change, then an entire society can reevaluate its faults to amend them.
This impeccably executed portrait of a country at a crossroads chronicles at length the Trial of the Juntas, a nearly unthinkable opportunity in the mid-1980s for the first government of Argentina’s embryonic democracy to try nine generals and admirals (including dictator Jorge Rafael Videla) for crimes against humanity committed during the military dictatorship in a civil court of law.

This review originally ran Sept. 14, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In “Raymond & Ray,” Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke play half-brothers journeying together to attend the funeral of their father, from whom they both were estranged.
The movie, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival prior to an Apple TV+ release, opens with Raymond (McGregor) driving through the rain to the cabin of Ray (Hawke), because an unannounced in-person visit is the only way to tell Ray that their father, Harris, has died. The funeral is scheduled for the next day, and Harris’ final wishes include both sons attending the funeral, digging the grave and putting Harris in the ground together.

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor: two heartthrobs of the '90s and early 2000s, together in one movie. What could go wrong? Well, when you have a dour drama about two half-brothers who reunite to bury their estranged father, it turns out, quite a lot.
"Raymond and Ray" is the new comedy-drama written and directed by Rodrigo García and produced by Alfonso Cuarón, which doesn't have much in the way of comedy, or much in the way of chemistry between two of our most charismatic leading actors. Instead, it's a bafflingly dull road trip movie full of clunky expositional dialogue like "How's your son who you haven't spoken to in several years?" and bizarre acting choices from a cast who seem to have varying degrees of familiarity with the script. Worst yet, it wastes the potential silver screen magic you could have by casting Hawke and McGregor as once-close...

Can Will Smith overcome the controversy surrounding the slap heard around the world to win his second Oscar?
That’s the question facing Apple after it announced that it will release “Emancipation,” a drama about an escaped slave that it paid Smith 35 million to star in and produce. The streamer is betting that the furor over Smith’s assault of Chris Rock at the Oscars has died down, particularly after Smith recorded an awkward apology video.
But even if Smith becomes the first performer since Tom Hanks to score back-to-back Oscars for best actor, he won’t be able to pick up his prize in person. Nor will he even be able to accept it via satellite. That’s because in April, facing almost certain expulsion, Smith decided to resign from membership of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. In the new Apple TV+ film "Raymond and Ray," Ewan McGregor ("Obi-Wan Kenobi") and Ethan Hawke ("Moon Knight") play estranged half brothers, brought back together by unusual circumstances. The two have been apart for quite a while, but after their father dies — and makes a very odd request — they reunite and reminisce about what a jerk he was. A new trailer has been released for the film, which will hit theaters first, then stream on the service.

The trailer for Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray opens with the revelation a father’s last wish was that his sons dig his grave, which is odd but also strangely moving. Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke star as half-brothers who weren’t exactly close to each other or their dad before he died, but the trailer teases their relationship will transform as they come to terms with their father’s death.
Maribel Verdú (Now and Then), Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses), Tom Bower (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), and Vondie Curtis Hall (For the People) also star in writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s new dramedy. Garcia earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of Big Love. His feature film directorial credits include 2008’s Passengers with Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson; 2009’s Mother and Child starring Naomi Watts and Annette Bening; and three-time Oscar nominee Albert Nobbs with Glenn Close.

Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor are two half-brothers with a whole lot of problems.
The duo star as the titular Raymond and Ray for the upcoming AppleTV+ dramedy “Raymond & Ray,” premiering October 21 on the streamer. Raymond and Ray come to terms with their estranged father’s death by attending his funeral and dredging up their past — emotionally as well as literally, as the pair grab actual shovels to dig up their father’s grave.
Raymond and Ray then embark on a road trip to get to know their deceased father. Their path leads them to a nurse (Sophie Okonedo) who cared for their dad, as well as their dad’s mistress (Maribel Verdú) and her son (Maxim Swinton), who is their other half-brother. Oscar Nuñez, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Todd Louiso also star.
“The old man was always screwing with us,” Raymond (McGregor) says to Ray (Hawke) in the trailer.

"We come from chaos… Our father was a monster." Apple TV has unveiled a trailer for Raymond & Ray, best known as the film where Ethan Hawke & Ewan McGregor star as half-brothers. This just premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival a few weeks ago, and will be out for streaming on Apple TV+ in October. It's another collaboration between Colombian filmmaker Rodrigo García and actor Ewan McGregor - they previously made the film Last Days in the Desert together in 2015. Half brothers Raymond and Ray reunite when their estranged father dies—and discover that his final wish was for them to dig his grave. Together, they process who they’ve become as men, both because of their father and in spite of him. The cast includes Maribel Verdú and Sophie Okonedo. It's also produced by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. This definitely looks like a festival film, digging deep into buried emotions and family and letting go.

It’s crazy to think that after all these years, actors Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor have never appeared in a movie together. Both of them are terrific character actors, and both of them seem to travel in the same circuit of character-driven independent cinema usually helmed by auteurs. Well, humanist filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia, known for “Last Days In The Desert” with McGregor and films like “Albert Nobbs” and “Mother and Child,” has the inspired idea to put them together as estranged brothers in the new Apple TV+ drama, “Raymond & Ray.”

There are types all over Rodrigo García’s Raymond & Ray. There’s Raymond (Ewan McGregor), the more stuck-up type who only wears business-casual. There’s Raymond’s half brother Ray (Ethan Hawke), the relaxed, too-cool-for-school guy exuding the energy of someone who always leaves their shirts unbuttoned. And there’s their abusive father, whose recent death brings the duo together in order to attend the funeral. He’s the type of shitty dad we’ve seen before in movies—except here his spirit looms over everyone in the ways he impacted each character’s lives, for better or worse. The opening minutes, where Raymond convinces Ray to go on a road trip to the funeral home, lays out all the necessary exposition for the all-too-familiar story of siblings learning to live their own lives, with plenty of drama and laughs along the way.

Saoirse Ronan is set to lead Steve McQueen’s World War II epic “Blitz” for Apple TV+.
First announced back in November, the project tells the stories of a group of Londoners during the aerial bombing of the British capital during the war. McQueen is writing, directing and producing the film, which is expected to begin shooting later this year.
Ronan, who is Irish, stars in the forthcoming films “Foe” and “See How They Run.” Her recent credits include Francis Lee’s “Ammonite,” opposite Kate Winslet, and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” in which she starred as Jo March. It’s still unclear what specific role she’ll be playing in “Blitz,” though it will mark the actor’s first project with the British helmer. Ronan will star alongside an “unknown newcomer” that’s yet to be revealed.

Outperforming global figures, but challenges remain after slow summer.
UK-Ireland box office takings will top £1bn by the end of 2022, according to Lucy Jones, executive director at research and analytics firm Comscore Movies.

Arriving at an isolated cabin late at night, Raymond (Ewan McGregor) hasn’t spoken to his half-brother Ray (Ethan Hawke) for many years. Slightly estranged but forever entwined due to their shared parentage, the brothers reconnect as they make an uneasy journey to their late father Harris’ funeral 100 miles away. “Raymond & Ray,” the latest from writer-director Rodrigo García (“Albert Nobbs”), plays a bit like Sam Shepard-lite but features yet another stellar performance from Hawke, who over the past decade has proven himself to be one of the great leading man character actors of his generation.

2001's "Moulin Rouge" was one of those movies that just took over a section of pop culture in the moment. It was a gigantic financial success and went on to earn a great deal of critical praise, giving us the kind of musical hit that had been missing from Hollywood for a little while. It also was something of a turning point for Ewan McGregor, who plays Christian, as he demonstrated he could do so much more than wield a lightsaber on a blockbuster stage. But that role could have gone to another actor who was very much at a crucial stage in his career: Ethan Hawke.
Currently, Hawke is starring alongside McGregor "Raymond & Ray." During a chat with Screen Rant in honor of the film's release, Hawe addressed his near-miss when it came to landing the co-lead role opposite Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's hit musical. As far as Hawke is concerned,...

Imagine a domineering father so dead set on messing with his two sons’ heads that he gives them both the same name. The ghost of one such dad haunts Rodrigo García’s “Raymond & Ray,” a tired, mild-mannered road trip drama that does the opposite of taking the path less traveled. Portraying the two Rays, stars Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor might have some audience pull once this Apple TV+ title settles into its streaming home. But in following the two leads’ emotionally messy characters as they half-heartedly embark on a mission to reconcile with their past, the film has little original to offer.
You’ll recognize the stock story as soon as Raymond (McGregor) pulls into Ray’s driveway one stormy night and stonily announces to his polar-opposite half-brother (Hawke), whom he hasn’t seen in years, “Our father is dead.” Yes, there will indeed be scores to settle from the past,...

When watching Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke in Raymond & Ray, so comfortably and authentically playing off each other as a pair of half-brothers who have been emotionally messed up by their late father, it’s almost impossible to believe they’ve never worked together before, let alone aren’t related in some way.
They have Rodrigo Garcia to thank for the introduction, and they in turn have repaid the filmmaker known for his portraits of complex women in films like Nine Lives and Albert Nobbs with a winning delve into contemporary masculinity and all its quirks that is as tenderly observed as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Viewers should find plenty to enjoy, not to mention to identify with, when the Apple original film, which had its debut at TIFF, arrives October 21 on the streamer as well as in select theaters.

Rodrigo García’s charming two-hander Raymond & Ray is the double-act we never knew we needed, an unlikely pairing — Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor — in a similarly unexpected comedy from a director better known for gentle female-fronted dramas. Truth be told, Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall was a little big for it (Sundance might have been a better platform), but this TIFF Gala Presentation from Apple Original Films went over well and could well be this year’s indie sleeper, with awards potential for its ensemble cast, and Hawke in particular.
The setting doesn’t suggest a barrel of laughs — the uptight Ray (McGregor) turns up at the home of his laidback jazz musician half-brother Raymond (Hawke) with sad news: their father is dead. It soon becomes clear that neither has any affection for the old man — he was, after all, “a bitter son of a bitch” says Ray — but Raymond...

Jennifer Lawrence brought serious starpower to the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, appearing at the world premiere of her new film “Causeway.”
But despite the big, Hollywood name “Causeway” was a quieter character study.
Lawrence stars in and produces the film, in which she plays a soldier returning to civilian life in New Orleans. The film also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Russell Harvard. “Causeway” is the feature directorial debut of theater veteran Lila Neugebauer, with a script written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel and Ottessa Moshfegh.
Her character in the film, Lynsey, is desperate to redeploy. When asked what drove her towards the decision, Lawrence said she found a common ground. “I felt something in my gut when I read this,” she said. “That kind of immediate, ‘We have to make this.’ I identify with that feeling of trying to find your home.

Ewan McGregor is having quite the year. After his Emmy-winning performance in Netflix's "Halston" and the immense success of his return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ limited series, the "Star Wars" legend will be next seen in an adaptation of a beloved novel.
"A Gentleman In Moscow," the bestselling story from American author Amor Towles (who also wrote "Rules of Civility" and "The Lincoln Highway"), is getting the adaptation treatment (via Variety). The book has sold over a million copies and has been translated into 30 languages since its publication in 2016, and a series based on Towles' novel will be streaming on Paramount+ soon. If you haven't read it yet — now's probably a good time. It's a moving story about luck, second chances, and how the most mundane-seeming decisions and interactions with people can change the course of your life. It’s never too early to start thinking about the Oscars.
There are eight more months until the Academy Awards get handed out, but studios and indie players are already deep into planning their campaigns for the films they hope will have what it takes to go the distance. There’s already a pair of populist contenders in Paramount’s blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” and A24’s metaverse action-dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which have cemented themselves in the best picture discussion. But as fall festivals such as Venice and Toronto unveil their slates, it’s clear that battle will soon be joined by many more Oscar hopefuls.
To be sure, a lot has changed since “Coda” captured the top prize last spring. Many of the studios that are expected to vie for top prizes are grappling with major corporate shifts or even new parent companies.

Don’t expect an “Emancipation” for Oscar winner Will Smith in 2022. Originally expected to drop on the fall festival circuit later this year, the actor’s next film from Apple, and co-produced by his production company Westbrook Studios, is planning to delay the film’s release to sometime in 2023.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), the movie would have been the first release for Smith following his assault on comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars. As a result, he was banned from attending the Oscars and other Academy-related events for 10 years.

However,...
