There are many mysteries in Nelly Furtado’s 21-minute Tiny Desk Concert: How far forward did NPR have to move its Tiny Desk to accommodate Furtado and her retinue of eight? Why doesn’t Furtado open her eyes when she sings? And why wouldn’t she want to look and see how cool backup singer Jim Beanz looks singing Timbaland’s “hey-doodoo-dodoo-hey-hey” part of “Say It Right”? How long did they have to practice nailing the seamless segues, like violinist William Lamoureux leading everyone into clapping hands for “Explode”? Did...

Something in the Water opens with an attack in a London subway station. Not by a shark on its way to visit relatives at the aquarium, but by a group of homophobes who take objection to Meg and Kayla daring to hold hands in public. It leaves Meg with mental and physical scars, as well as causing the pair to break up.
A year later, Lizzie and Dominic are getting married at a Caribbean resort, reuniting several old friends including Dominic’s sister Cam, Ruth and, much to each other’s dismay, Kayla and Meg. Now that everyone is here, they just need to do something stupid so they can become shark bait. Cam takes care of that by suggesting they all pile into a small motorboat...

Singer Daryl Hall confirmed the end of the pop-rock duo Hall & Oates. Hall said a reunion between him and fellow singer John Oates is not happening soon or at all. Known for hit songs like, “Maneater” and “Rich Girl,” the duo formed in 1970 and have an extensive career spanning over 50 years.
“I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years,” Hall told Variety about Oates. “We didn’t write songs together. We didn’t do anything together except perform live shows. We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs on stage with Hall & Oates—and now I get to.”
Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates in November 2023 over financial disputes. Hall accused Oates of “the ultimate partnership betrayal” after Oates planned to sell his share of their co-owned company, Whole Oats Enterprises Llp. Hall also filed a restraining order against Oates.

It’s hard to imagine iconic duos with their other half. What’s Abbott without Costello? Mac without cheese? Hall without Oates? Well, John Oates is looking to show you just what that might be, announcing a new album titled “Reunion” – quite ironic considering there will never be another one between him and Daryl Hall, the pop duo behind “Private Eyes” and “Maneater”, with Oates now saying the only person he’s going to reunite with is himself.
As John Oates told Rolling Stone, “I’ve been trying to rediscover who I am as an individual, both personally and on the professional and creative side. I realized there was a deeper and more nuanced meaning to ‘reunion.’” This rediscovery comes not long after news broke that Daryl Hall was seeking to sue John Oates over the latter attempting to sell his share in their collaborations, putting a nail in a rather storied partnership and career.

When John Oates spoke to Rolling Stone in January 2020, he explained how balancing his time between massive Hall & Oates concerts with his longtime creative partner Daryl Hall and intimate solo gigs provided him with a dream life. “It keeps me balanced,” he said. “[When I tour solo], I carry my own gear. I show up with my guitar in my hand and put the amp in the back of my car. It’s real and I love it. Then I go out there with Daryl and we’re flying around in private planes and...

Earlier this month, we learned that Game of Thrones cast members Sophie Turner and Kit Harington will be reuniting for writer/director Natasha Kermani’s Gothic horror film The Dreadful… and close on the heels of that announcement comes the news that Turner has also signed on to star in a psychological thriller called Trust, which is coming our way from Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the Saw franchise.
Twisted Pictures has secured a multi-picture deal with Republic Pictures, with Republic Pictures acquiring the worldwide rights to Trust. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The Paramount Global housed Republic Pictures was revived in 2023 as an acquisitions only label, and has a slate that includes Samara Weaving starrer Azreal and Jon Voight action film The Painter.” The Republic Pictures name goes back to 1935 and the days when the company was a standalone studio that specialized in serials, Westerns, and B-movies.

After having conquered first love, witches and cannibalism, Luca Guadagnino turns his attention to tennis and threesomes in Challengers. Here’s the new trailer.
Name a director with a more varied range of films than Luca Guadagnino. The Italian master of sensuality has directed Timothee Chalamet to an Oscar nomination in Call Me By Your Name, exploded plenty of heads in Suspiria and combined romance and cannibalism in Bones And All. And that’s only his last three films.
Guadagnino’s next project is Challengers. Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, the drama is set in the competitive world of tennis.
Take a look at the second Challengers trailer.
Any film that uses Nelly Furtado’s ‘Maneater’ in the trailer shoots right to the top of my most anticipated films list.
Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan, a tennis prodigy who has to give up on her dream after an injury.

Oh-oh here he comes. John Oates, who topped the charts with Daryl Hall in the ‘70s and ‘80s, says he is officially moving on from his once-partner, signaling an official end to the duo. Oates’ comments come amid the legal battle with Hall over the former trying to sell his music rights.
Speaking on the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast (via Variety), Oates said that while he is proud of his work with Hall, now that the two have major legal troubles between them and they haven’t released an album in seven years, it’s time to look at what’s in front of him. “I don’t like to live in the past… I make the analogy of what it’s like when you go to a great museum and you’re really excited to go and see all the beautiful paintings or the exhibits or whatever it might be,...

John Oates is speaking out amid his ongoing legal battle with bandmate Daryl Hall, saying he has “moved on” from the experience.
Hall sued Oates last month over Oates’ plan to sell his share of their joint venture Whole Oats Enterprises to Primary Wave Music without the other’s permission. Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against Oates as legal proceedings continue.
“You can’t ignore the fact that the Hall & Oates catalog of hits and the 50-year career will always trump almost anything that Daryl does on his own or I do on my own, which is okay because I’m very proud of that music,” Oates said recently on David Yontef’s Behind the Velvet Rope podcast. “I’m really proud of what Daryl and I created together. I think we made music that will stand the test of time.”
He continued, “I don’t like to live in the past.

Merry Christmas, you filthy animals! John Oates may be involved a contentious legal battle with his old bandmate, but that won’t stop him from spreading some cheer and raising awareness for a good cause with a new song, “Get Your Smile On.”
Oates said he wrote the breezy tune during the Covid-19 pandemic when he was searching for “any positive vibe I could up with.” He began sketching the song on GarageBand, but as it came together, he “decided to really produce the track the way I would have in a professional recording studio.

The judges on The Masked Singer were caught off guard when John Oates was revealed as the Anteater on the singing competition reality show on Wednesday night (December 13th) — despite the obvious “Maneater” reference staring them right in the face.
Prior to the big reveal, Oates performed a rousing rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B Goode,” though his weighty costume prevented him from doing any dance moves besides flailing his arms around. Watch a full replay below.
None of the members of the judging panel — comprised of Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke — were able to guess who was under the costume. McCarthy Wahlberg in particular was beside herself after having previously interviewed Oates for SiriusXM.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 12 of “The Masked Singer,” “Soundtrack to My Life,” which aired Dec. 13 on Fox.
Oh, oh, here he comes. Watch out boy, he’ll chew you up! Oh, oh, here he comes. John Oates is an Anteater.
Say it isn’t so. John Oates, one half of the most successful rock duo of all time — Daryl Hall & John Oates — was revealed on Wednesday as the Anteater on “The Masked Singer.” Later, Keyshia Cole was also unmasked as the Candelabra.
The Oates appearance comes at quite a coincidental moment: He and Hall have been in the news recently after a falling out (and Hall’s lawsuit) over Oates’ plan to sell his share of their joint venture.
“I can’t really talk about it,” Oates told Variety last week. “I don’t really want to talk about it. It...

Daryl Hall is proving to be a real maneater, as more details of his restraining order and suit against former partner John Oates have come out, with Halls citing any potential music sale as likely causing “imminent irreparable harm.”
Hall’s restraining order, which was filed earlier this month, stems from Oates apparently seeking to move forward with a plan to sell the entirety of his individual rights, title and interest in Whole Oats Enterprises (Woe), a limited liability partnership which also owns the “Hall & Oates” trademark. As per the suit (obtained by People), Oates was going to sell to publisher Primary Wave Music without the consent of Hall. Daryl Hall plans to stop this “so as to maintain the status quo of Woe before there is a change in control of the partnership in violation of the terms of the Agreement.”

John Oates has issued a social media statement calling for empathy, but avoiding the main issue of the moment: why he and longtime collaborator Daryl Hall are engaged in litigation.
The 75-year-old posted a Thanksgiving selfie Thursday, offering a message calling for worldwide understanding.
“During this time of communal reflection and connection with loved ones, let’s not forget those experiencing challenges globally,” Oates wrote. He asked for a “more compassionate and supportive world.”
The 77-year-old Hall is suing Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate. Although the legal documents are sealed, reports indicate their dispute is over which songs Oates will be allowed to sing during his solo appearances, an apparent sore point for Hall, who was the chief songwriter on most of the duo’s hits.

The tranquil world of Hall & Oates was rocked this week by news that the longtime duo are in the midst of a nasty legal battle. The exact details are sealed, but we do know that Daryl Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against John Oates. There’s also a trademark dispute of some sort. (Representatives for both artists have not returned e-mails from Rolling Stone seeking comment.)
This is shocking on several levels. Hall & Oates are one of the few duos in music history that seemingly always got along.

Daryl Hall has filed a restraining order against his former music partner, John Oates, amid a private legal battle between the Hall & Oates stars.
Based on public court records, Hall filed an undisclosed complaint against Oates on November 16 and a motion for a temporary restraining order. The order is set to begin on November 30.
The lawsuit was confirmed by the Nashville Chancery Court, who declined further comment due to the confidentiality of the case.
Hall and Oates met in 1967 and formed their band three years later. They have released 18 studio albums since their 1972 debut, “Whole Oats” and had six No. 1 singles, including “Rich Girl” and “Man Eater.”
Last year, Hall took aim at Oates on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast.

Review: There are so many “nature run amok” movies out there, particularly shark thrillers and killer croc (or gator) flicks, they can be easy to overlook and pass by. But every once in a while, something will be intriguing enough to stand out from the pack. 47 Meters Down, The Shallows, The Meg, Crawl, Cocaine Bear, etc. The latest to stand out from the pack, with both its title and concept, is director Matthew Goodhue’s Slotherhouse. A movie that mixes together the nature run amok and sorority house slasher sub-genres to very entertaining effect… and may be the first killer sloth movie. It’s difficult to believe we’ve never gotten a killer sloth before,...

Had Katniss Everdeen and the “X-Men” series never gotten in the way — or, had we still lived in an era when superheroes or fantasy franchises were not seen as status symbols on the resume of a young superstar — Jennifer Lawrence would have already starred in numerous rom-coms by now, à la the Julia Roberts of the 90s. Especially after winning the Oscar for one a decade ago, with David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook.”
But better late than never says Gene Stupnitsky’s “No Hard Feelings,” a genuinely witty and somewhat clumsy romantic comedy, that feels more like an honest-to-god movie than many of the rushed and straight-to-streaming examples of the genre we’ve seen in the recent years.

No Hard Feelings, Gene Stupnitsky’s satisfyingly funny summer comedy, opens with a tow truck and a desperate woman.
The morning after a one-night stand with an Italian stranger, Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) wakes to find her car being impounded by the county. Hard times have fallen on the Montauk local, who supplements her bartending income by driving for Uber. She owes thousands in property taxes, and it doesn’t help that her ex, Gary (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), whom she ghosted after three months of dating, is the one seizing her vehicle. His bitterness about their lack of closure means he definitely won’t do her a solid.
It’s under these terrible circumstances that Maddie finds a peculiar Craigslist advertisement. A rich couple (played by Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick), desperate for their son (Andrew Barth Feldman) to gain confidence before college, is looking for someone to casually date him. Love,...

Exclusive: Ricky Gervais has directed his first BBC project for a decade as the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie unveils his debut batch of 11 Short Films since taking on the role last year.
Deadline can reveal that The Office and After Life creator Gervais has directed 7 Minutes, a show about two people awkwardly contemplating suicide from his own Derek Productions.
Penned by Harry Carlile and Jonathan Parramint and starring Joe Wilkinson and Seroca Davis, 7 Minutes’ logline reads: “A desolate train track seems the perfect spot to end it all, until someone else turns up with the same idea. Awkward.”
Gervais’ last BBC project was the Warwick Davis-starring Life’s Too Short, which ran from 2011 to 2013 and was co-written with long-time writing partner Stephen Merchant. Since then, he has mostly made shows for Netflix such as global smash After Life.

New York City has inspired a lot of music. The best songs about New York City include rock ‘n’ roll songs, synth-pop songs, and a classic rap single. Notably, Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” is a song about New York City.
Frank Sinatra | Gab Archive / Contributor 5. Hall & Oates’ ‘Maneater’
During a 2020 interview with American Songwriter, John Oates discussed “Maneater.” “Well, it was about New York City, after the fact,” he said. “I got the idea for the song because there was a woman who was very — she was beautiful but had a very foul, you know, vocabulary. It was the juxtaposition of this great beauty with this foul mouth that really kind of sparked an idea to me that she would chew you up and spit you out.”
Hall & Oates decided not to write the song about her. “But neither Daryl nor I wanted to write a song that was anti-women or negative toward women,...

The Masked Singer Season 9 is almost halfway finished, and the competition is heating up with multiple talented vocalists. Medusa nearly went home in the first group, but the judges chose to save her with the Ding Dong Keep It On bell. As a result, she’ll compete in the quarterfinals in a few weeks. That gives The Masked Singer fans plenty of time to speculate on Medusa’s identity — and there have been quite a few guesses so far. Here are the best ones, ranked from most to least likely to be correct.
Medusa performs on ‘The Masked Singer’ Season 9 | Fox 1. Bishop Briggs
The overwhelmingly popular guess among fans for Medusa on The Masked Singer is Bishop Briggs. On top of having a voice and mannerisms that match the British singer-songwriter, all of Medusa’s clues can be traced back to Briggs. For example, she mentioned success coming from “the grayest of places,...

Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” is a collaboration with a rock star. Swift didn’t stick with her collaborator’s vision for the song. Subsequently, he discussed why this was the case.
Taylor Swift | Mat Hayward / Contributor Why Taylor Swift’s ‘Welcome to New York’ sounds like 1980s music
Ryan Tedder is the lead singer of OneRepublic, which is known for hits like “Apologize,” “Counting Stars,” and “Good Life.” He also wrote songs for other artists, such as Lil Nas X’s “Thats What I Want,” Adele’s “Turning Tables,” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone.”
During a 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tedder said he expected to write something from scratch with Swift. “Then she calls me and says, ‘Is it cool if I already have an idea?'” he recalled. “I said, ‘Sure.’

Every year, Strictly Come Dancing brings its yearly spook-fest back to the dance floor.
By now, we’ve seen hundreds of dancers take part in the themed competition week, hoping to impress the judges with routines that are less trick, more treat.
For fans, Halloween is one of the biggest nights in the Strictly calendar. Design-wise, it doesn’t get more extra than this, with the perfect performance featuring a spooky costume and song choice that are well linked together. However, it’s not always easy and we often see a slightly spooky song title pushed together with a random costume that doesn’t exactly make sense or scream Halloween. After all, there are only so many times the show can do the “Monster Mash”.

Plot: A group of friends is stalked by a large shark whose only purpose is to kill.
Review: The fact that Maneater is a killer shark movie should already set your expectations right from the jump. I mean, when was the last time we had a good one? But that also means that most people going into this should have their expectations set low. In a lot of ways, this is what would happen if you gave Artificial Intelligence the task of making a killer shark movie. It hits all the moments you would expect it to and doesn’t deter once. But is that a good thing?
