On Tuesday, Max announced it was raising subscription prices by $1 per month on both of its ad-free plans.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service is named Max because of the amount of premium content available, but customers may point to the rising price of the service as the true source of its name. Wbd announced on Tuesday that the price of streaming ad-free on Max was going up, as both the Max Ad-Free and Max Ultimate plans will cost by $1 per month more, effective immediately for new customers. If you’re ready to cancel your Max subscription before your budget takes yet another hit thanks to a streamer raising prices, I’ll lay out some excellent alternatives for you below.
Key Details: Existing customers will see the new price reflected on their bills on or after July 4. Apple TV+ is closest to Max in terms of the prestige TV content it offers.

Mark Wahlberg has led one too many daunting projects that are spread across multiple genres, with video game-based action pieces being among them as well.
Like his 2008 action/crime from Irish director John Moore, Max Payne, for one to count, which may have received lukewarm reviews but was quite a successful piece when it comes to its box office scores, especially in the US.

Needless to say, Wahlberg performed epically in the movie; to the point where, perhaps, no one could play the character in live-action better. That said, even Moore thought through this very perspective before making the movie.
If anything, the filmmaker just may have even canceled his $80 million movie, perhaps, had the actor not signed on to star in it.

While Robert Downey Jr. is known for his portrayal of Iron Man in the MCU, he also portrayed Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of the popular novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The actor reprised his role in the 2011 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and was also set to appear in a threequel.
Amazon Prime Video announced recently that a series based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels would be in development with Guy Ritchie directing. This follows a trend of prequels and spinoffs of popular characters where the story follows a younger version such as Dexter, Young Sheldon, Ted, and more.

Peacock just put an impossible-to-miss offer on the table. The Comcast-owned streaming service has already built itself up as a good value in the minds of customers with its varied programming options, but this deal takes the cake. For a limited time, new subscribers can sign up for a subscription to Peacock’s ad-supported Premium plan for just $19.99 for an entire year, a $59.99 value. The genre of Western movies can be considered the most serious one as its characters are almost always cold and tough as steel. However, what if we take a typical Wild West plot and make a comedy that will mock all the genre’s obvious tropes of it?
Such an attempt was made by Seth MacFarlane, who is famous for creating the Family Guy sitcom (since 1999) and two of Mark Wahlberg-starring Ted movies (2012 and 2015). Indeed, the filmmaker has the required comedy potential, so let’s learn about this movie.
The plot of MacFarlane’s Western flick centers on Albert Stark, a farmer who lives his calm life near the notorious Western frontier. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he loses all his temper but, luckily, is then helped by Anna, a brave female gunfighter.
Stark starts finding his inner courage under the woman’s surveillance, and it’s high time to show himself off,...

Exclusive: NBCUniversal (NBCU) Global TV Distribution has struck a content deal with Asian streamer Begin.
According to Begin, this is the first time that NBCU content will be legally watchable in Pakistan, as the U.S. major’s movies and shows have historically been pirated via Pakistani telecoms and internet service providers.
The nascent streamer, which is headquartered in the UAE, backed by Z2C Limited and available in Pakistan, has picked up movies including Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Kung Fu Panda 4 as part of the multi-year deal. NBCU TV series in the deal include Ted, Based on a True Story and Peacock’s Tattooist of Auschwitz adaptation.
“We know our audiences crave fresh and exciting content, and with exclusive access to NBCUniversal’s biggest hits and new releases, we can’t wait to satisfy their appetite with the best in entertainment,” said Jonathan Mark, Begin’s CEO and Co-Founder.

Hannah Waddingham has made quite a name for herself since playing Septa Unella, aka the Shame Nun, in the fifth season of Game of Thrones. Despite having little dialogue, the actress made her acting prowess known by commanding the screen, and later went on to secure two Emmy wins for her performance as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso.
Moreover, her success hasn’t been limited to the small screen, as Waddingham recently appeared in The Fall Guy, and is now looking forward to making her Mission: Impossible debut. But despite being in top demand in Hollywood in recent years, her introduction to showbiz wasn’t pretty, as the actress recalled being shunned by many before making it big.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.

A reboot of “The Munsters” and a series adaptation of the 1976 Universal Pictures comedy “Car Wash” are among the projects Universal Studio Group (Usg) currently has in development, Variety has learned. In addition, Universal International Studios (Uis) and Carnival Films are developing a drama series about a newlywed woman accused of murdering her husband on their honeymoon.
The “Munsters” reboot is currently titled “1313,” a reference to the fictional family of monsters’ address at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. It is not currently set up at any network or streaming service.
The new show is described as a horror series that “lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse,” per the official logline. The project was developed by James Wan, Lindsey Anderson Beer, and Ingrid Bisu. Anderson Beer will serve as showrunner and executive producer via Lab Brew, with Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett executive producing via Atomic Monster. Bisu will be a co-executive producer.

NBCUniversal’s streamer managed to hold onto a majority of viewers who signed up to watch its exclusive NFL Wild Card game, but a price increase could change the equation.
The Olympic lights will be shining brightly on Peacock this summer! The streaming service from NBCUniversal is slated to broadcast every single event of the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, offering the most comprehensive coverage to ever surround the games. The bookkeepers at Comcast shrewdly decided to increase the price of Peacock just days before the start of the Olympics, but new data from Parrot Analytics shows that plan could be quite risky unless Peacock executes the maneuver perfectly.
Key Details: Peacock is seen as a good value by customers now, but must ensure that perception survives its price hike to keep viewers who sign up for the Olympics subscribed. Both Peacock plans will rise in price by $2 per month starting in July.

We’ve seen other big-screen franchises make the leap to TV over the years, but could Fast & Furious be next?
While speaking with Variety, NBCUniversal Studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley teased the future of the Fast & Furious franchise, saying there’s “still gas in the tank” even after the Fast X sequel hits theaters in 2026. Where the franchise goes from there is unclear, but Langley said, “We may pivot another time and bring it back to the streets of L.A. and maybe make it a more intimate story.” After mentioning previous NBCUniversal shows based on movies, such as Pitch Perfect and Ted, Langley said, “Fast and Furious is a good one” for a potential future TV series.

Though Steve Carell has tried his best to work on great TV shows in recent years, he still can’t shake “The Office.” Sure, he’s made plenty of films and proven he’s a wonderful actor, but everytime he works on a new show, such as the Netflix comedy, “Space Force,” it’s always just a reminder that he was at his peak on “The Office.” Well, now he’s headed to HBO (a network synonymous with quality) to once again try to shake off that ‘Office’ smell.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Paramount Global may be a direct competitor, but NBCUniversal Studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley will be disappointed if the media giant goes away.
“It’s sad,” Langley said at the Kering Women in Motion talk at the Cannes Film Festival, noting that a sale of Paramount means there will be fewer Hollywood studios. “These companies have been great and I’m a big believer in this competitive landscape — kind of ‘all boats will rise. There’s enough to go around.’ I like having healthy competitors; it’s much more fun and interesting and it’s just best for the business.”
Paramount has been entertaining offers in recent months, with companies like Skydance and Sony circling the studio. Langley is hopeful that the deal will be finished by the end of the year. “It’s enough already reading about this,” she said. “No one really knows what’s happening.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

Seth Macfarlane’s foul mouthed Ted will be back for a second series. Here’s what we know about Ted season 2:
TV spin-off Ted, based on the Seth Macfarlane films of the same name, has proved so successful that Peacock has commissioned a second series. The motion capture means that the show is labour intensive and expensive to make – according to some estimates, the budget is pushing $10m an episode – so it could be a while before it hits the screen.
Ted (the TV series) is a prequel set in 1993 which follows the adventures of the titular bear (voiced by Macfarlane) and his 16 year-old best friend John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham).
The seven-episode series debuted in January, and was a big deal in the UK as well as the US; according to Deadline,...

In the great debate of Bear or Man, Peacock chooses Bear! After giving a green light to Seth MacFarlane’s Ted as an event series, the wise-cracking, weed-smoking bear, and undeniably lovable bastard son of Snuggle is bringing more comedy to the streaming network. Peacock is bumping Ted up to an ongoing show with MacFarlane reprising his role as the aforementioned stuffed bear that comes to life.

Peacock may be struggling on the revenue front, but that's not keeping it from bringing back one of its most successful shows for a second season.
At the beginning of 2024, Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" TV series (watch the trailer) became Peacock's most watched original series ever. On top of that, the streaming adaptation of the big screen comedy from the "Family Guy" creator actually took the #1 spot on the Original Streaming Comedy charts in the United States for over two months. But "Ted" was a massive hit outside of the U.S. too, making waves in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. That's more than enough for a second season of "Ted."
If you missed "Ted," here's the synopsis for the first season:

The “Ted” prequel series has been renewed for Season 2 at Peacock, Variety has learned.
Originally presented as an event series, the seven-episode first season of “Ted” debuted on the streamer in January. It serves as a prequel to the two “Ted” feature films, which were released in 2012 and 2015.
Per Peacock, the show became its most-watched original title to date and was also the top streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months, according to Nielsen data.
The series takes place in the early 1990s in Framingham, Mass. It follows the lives of Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and his 16 year old best friend, John (Max Burkholder). Ted’s fame has waned and he is now once again living with John and his family.
The series also stars Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach as John’s parents, Matty and Susan, along with Giorgia Whigham as John’s cousin Blaire.

Seth MacFarlane and Peacock aren’t done with Ted yet.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has ordered a second season of the comedy, a prequel to the two feature films that have the MacFarlane-voiced living teddy bear at their center. Peacock originally billed Ted as an “event series,” but it will now be an ongoing show.
The renewal comes about four months after Ted premiered on Peacock to solid ratings in January. It was the top streaming comedy in the United States for about two months after its debut, and Peacock says the series is its most-watched original to date. It also put up strong showings in other countries, notably on Sky in the U.K., FOX8 and streaming service Binge in Australia and Showcase in Canada.

Peacock has given a second-season pickup to Ted, the prequel TV series to Seth MacFarlane’s Ted film franchise.
The seven-episode initial installment of Ted, released January 11, was billed as an event series. Its overwhelming ratings success, becoming Peacock’s most-watched original series to date and the No. 1 original streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months in the Nielsen rankings, naturally triggered a conversation about a second season.
Despite Ted‘s excellent performance, the renewal decision was not straightforward, I hear, as the comedy’s hybrid live-action/CGI nature makes it expensive to produce, and it also takes a long time to make.
Still, keeping its biggest hit was important to Peacock, and four months after the Season 1 drop, the streamer has ordered a second season.
Set in 1993, Ted comes from writer, director, executive producer and showrunner MacFarlane.

Everyone knows Mila Kunis as a brilliant comedy performer, because her name is strongly associated with such sitcoms, as That '70s Show with her role of the hilarious Jackie Burkhart and Family Guy, where she voices Meg, the eldest child of the Griffins.
After the actress’ roles in Friends with Benefits (2011), Ted (2012) and Bad Moms (2016), which are all comedies, it’s hard to imagine her in a dramatical setting. However, she totally breaks the canon with the 2020 shocking movie, now climbing Netflix’s top.
The film’s plot revolves around Kunis’ Molly, a 31-year-old drug addict on her 15th attempt at sobriety. It may sound really desperate, but this time she’s really willing to stop using heroin, and she’s trying to convince not only the audience, but her own estranged mother Deb (played by the accomplished Glenn Close) of that.

Mark Wahlberg is often seen without tattoos nowadays, but this wasn’t always the case. The actor’s body used to be marked everywhere with tattoos in his younger years. Wahlberg regretted inking his body as he’d gotten older, and he tried to make sure his kids wouldn’t repeat his mistake.

Wahlberg found out the hard way that removing tattoos is much more painful than getting them. The actor had been inking his body since he was 11-years-old. So when he decided to get rid of them, he had a lot of tattoos to deal with.
“I had, like, eight or nine. They went all the way around my neck, my stomach, my arms, my back, my leg,” Wahlberg once said on The Late, Late Show with James Corden.

NBCUniversal is hiking the price of Peacock for the second time in two years, tacking $2 onto the cost of the streaming service this summer, around the time of the Paris Olympics.
Beginning in July, the monthly price for Peacock Premium will increase to $7.99. Premium Plus, which offers limited advertising, download capability and live local programming, will now be $13.99. Annual plans will go up to $79.99 for Premium and $139.99 for Premium Plus.

NBCUniversal is looking to wring more money out of Peacock subscribers, with the streamer set to raise prices this summer — one year after its last fee hike — going into effect for new customers ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
Beginning in mid-July, the price for Peacock Premium (with ads) will increase by $2 to $7.99 per month and Peacock Premium Plus (mostly ad-free) is also going up by $2 to $13.99 per month. Peacock Premium’s annual price will increase from $59.99 to $79.99, while Premium Plus is going from $119.99 to $139.99 per year.
The new prices will be effective starting July 18 for new Peacock customers and for existing subscribers with their next billing date on or after Aug. 17.
The Peacock Premium Plus tier provides ad-free content, the ability to download episodes and live local NBC channels. Due to streaming rights, per NBCU, a “small amount of programming” still contains ads on some Peacock channels, events, and a few shows and movies.

Peacock is peacocking ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics: the NBCUniversal streaming service is raising its monthly rates by $2 on both its Premium and Premium Plus plans. The new rates go into effect for new customers on July 18 — the Paris Olympics start on the 26th.
Existing customers will get the Olympics at their current rate: the price hike for them will hold until August 17 at the earliest (dependent on billing date). The Olympics close on August 11.
Peacock Premium will now cost $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Peacock Premium Plus, the ad-free tier, will run $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Premium Plus members can also download content and get live, local NBC channels.
It could use the money: Peacock lost $639 million in the first quarter of 2024. The company has not announced a profitability timeline.
Peacock has “nearly 100,000 programming hours,” the company says. Of those, 8,000 are live sports — not counting the 5,000 coming from the Olympics this summer.

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. Peacock added 3 million subscribers in the quarter of its exclusive NFL playoff game, Comcast revealed Thursday as part of its earnings announcement. It now has 34 million subs, up from 31 million at the end of 2023.
Still, Peacock lost $639 million in the quarter. At least that wasn’t as bad as the last one!
Peacock lost $825 million over the final three months of 2023. It lost $704 million in the first quarter of 2023 — so the current loss is technically an improvement from the comparable quarters. It certainly helps when revenue grows, as Peacock’s did, to $1.1 billion in the first quarter of the current year.
Universal Pictures in the first quarter released “Argylle” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” in theaters. The latest in the Jack Black karate-bear movie series has done great: it made $481 million worldwide. “Argylle” didn’t even make $100 million. “Migration” was released at the end of 2023, so a chunk of its...

Apple TV+ officially launched on November 1, 2019, the same month as Disney+ and about six months before HBO Max (now Max.)
The launch of Apple's original content efforts came when all of the major players were staking out their claims on the streaming economy following the success of Netflix.
Four and a half years into its existence, Apple has much to be proud of regarding Apple TV+
It has produced some global hits, led by Ted Lasso, and it became the first and so far only streaming service to make a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Apple TV+ likely does not draw the eyeballs that Netflix and some of its other competitors do. But in Apple's case, that doesn't quite matter.

Seth MacFarlane of “Family Guy” and “Ted” fame is partnering through his Seth MacFarlane Foundation with filmmaker Martin Scorsese to fund The Film Foundation’s (led by Scorsese) first-ever restoration of a curated selection of a dozen historically significant animated shorts from the 1920s through the 1940s. The announcement was made today. Among the lot are nine short animated films from the legendary team of brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, who created Betty Boop and Koko the Clown among many other memorable characters.
The films were selected and restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and The Film Foundation, in collaboration with Paramount Studio Archives. They were funded by MacFarlane and completed using unique original pre-print elements and/or print sources, mostly nitrate.

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

Mark Wahlberg is inevitably widely recognized as one of the most talented actors in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry. From his immaculate acting skills to his absolutely breathtaking physique, the 52-year-old actor continues to charm his fans from all across the globe to the core. But many years before he attained this respectable feat, Wahlberg wasn’t as confident as he is now.
Mark Wahlberg in Father Stu.
In fact, the Ted star wasn’t so sure of his own talent in the acting field when he was an aspiring actor, only just starting out. And the movie taking him out of this zone, making him fearless, and inspiring him to become a “real actor” was the most unexpected one (or perhaps expected one?): His R-rated critically commended comedy-drama from 1997, Boogie Nights.

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) noted: “‘The New Look’ is a fine addition to the recent group of World War II dramas set mostly outside of battle, including the...

Emmy watchers should not be surprised if multiple top contenders this year opt to take a shot at the drama series race rather than compete in the limited series category. The list is known to include Apple TV+ ‘s “Masters of the Air,” FX’s “Shōgun” and HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which means that those platforms are considering future seasons of those shows.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the top-tier contenders that seemed naturally bound for the limited series race are the subject of intense strategy discussions among network executives, agents, creators, PR and awards consultants. In order to win the Television Academy’s blessing to compete for drama series, networks would have to prove that the production will be ongoing beyond one season, which would differ from their original intent. Decision time is fast approaching as the submission deadline is May 9 for programs that aired between June 1, 2023-May 31, 2024. Representatives...
