While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Even before the awards ceremony began, as talent started filing into the Citizen News venue in the heart of Hollywood, it was a marvel to see “Palm Royale” star and Vanguard Award recipient Carol Burnett hold court as fellow honorees like “Under the Bridge” producer/star Riley Keough, recipient of the Maverick Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, recipient of the Visionary Award (and whom Burnett presented an Emmy to in January), came to greet the comedy legend.

The first ever TV-only version of IndieWire Honors took place Thursday, June 6.
“This will be another extraordinary IndieWire Honors, the awards evening that isn’t like any other,” Dana Harris-Bridson, IndieWire’s senior VP and Editor in Chief said when announcing the event. “It’s our first one dedicated to the best of TV and we’re proud to have an opportunity to celebrate these artists.”
Alex Edelman hosted the event, which handed out awards to 13 stars of the TV season picked by IndieWire’s staff. At the awards ceremony at Citizen News in Hollywood, there was a cocktail party vibe that allowed guests to mingle, celebrate each other’s work, and even sneak a glance at honoree and all-around icon Carol Burnett, who accepted the Vanguard Award for her performance on Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale.”
Dakota Fanning received the Performance Award for her stellar work in Netflix’s “Ripley.

Exclusive: Ahead of its June 8 world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, the road trip buddy comedy Sacramento, directed by and starring Michael Angarano (Oppenheimer), has been acquired by Vertical for distribution in North America, the UK and Ireland later this year.
In addition to Angarano, the starry indie’s cast includes Michael Cera (Barbie), Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding), and Maya Erskine (Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith). The film tells the story of Rickey (Angarano), an energetic and free-spirited young man with a Peter Pan complex who, following the death of his father, convinces his long-time friend Glenn (Cera) to hit pause on his blissful domestic life and embark on an impromptu road trip across California.
Angarano penned the screenplay with Chris Smith, and they produced the film alongside Bee-Hive Productions’ Stephen Braun, the Wonder Company’s Chris Abernathy and Eric B. Fleischman, and Sam Grey. Irfan Siddiqui served as associate producer.

It’s “Barbie” meets the Dark Universe.
Mattel, the toy company/studio behind last year’s mega-blockbuster “Barbie,” has teamed up with Universal Pictures and prolific screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman and his company Weed Road to develop “Monster High,” a live-action theatrical film based on a popular line of dolls.
Launched in 2010, the Monster High line consists of fashion dolls inspired by horror movies, monsters from folklore, and other bits of spooky pop culture, which have in turn inspired an animated web series, an animated TV series, video games, book series, and a live-action made-for-tv musical. Monster High is aimed at girls 7-14 who want something different from Barbie.
The cinematic world of “Monster High” is built around a high school in the town of New Salem attended by the children of famous monsters. The characters include Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride; Dracula’s daughter Draculaura; and Clawdeen Wolf,...

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’: Maya Erskine Revisits The Unconventional Romance In Her Breakout Hit [Interview]
Considering its streaming success, the fact that “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” was renewed for a second season by Prime Video wasn’t surprising. Brad Pitt is undoubtedly one of the biggest, if not the biggest star in Hollywood. The now 60-year-old heartthrob has been involved in a plethora of iconic projects across genres and is estimated to have a net worth of $400 million. Right from 12 Monkeys to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, to 12 Years a Slave, Pitt’s career is simply littered with iconic projects.

TV takes on familiar IP isn’t new these days, although the quality of those series runs the gamut. For every show like Prime Video‘s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Dead Ringers,” there are others, like Paramount+‘s “Sexy Beast,” that are utterly forgettable. In short, IP-turned-tv varies in quality, but that’s not stopping Warner Bros. from remaking one of Zack Snyder‘s biggest films into series form.

A “300” TV series adaptation is in early development at Warner Bros. Television, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details are still being worked out, but sources say that the show would serve as a prequel to the 2006 film. No writer or platform is currently attached to the project.
Deals are still being negotiated, but Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote “300,” is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. Deborah Snyder, who executive produced “300,” would also return as an executive producer under her and Zack’s Stone Quarry production banner, with Stone Quarry’s Wesley Coller also on board. Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann — all of whom were producers on the film — are likewise in talks to return.
Reps for Wbtv declined to comment.

When Francesca Sloane jumped on a Zoom five weeks ago to discuss the celebrated “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the show’s co-creator didn’t know if the Prime Video series was coming back for a second season. In hindsight, it would have been shocking if it didn’t. The Donald Glover and Maya Erskine drama series earned almost 1 billion views in the U.S. in its opening week and was a mainstay on the streamer’s top 10 trending list for over two months.

Cate Blanchett has worked with some of the most successful actors of all time. On top of being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she has proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with, having multiple Oscar nominations and two wins under her belt. In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

Since Maya Erskine burst onto our televisions in 2019 as a 31-year-old actress playing the socially inept 13-year-old Maya Ishii-Peters on Hulu’s “Pen15” (she also co-created the raucous show), her comedic path seemed a clear one. But then earlier this year, she switched it up with the very adult role of intrepid spy Jane Smith, whose cover is to be married for better or for worse to fellow spy John Smith (Donald Glover) in Amazon Prime Video’s action-drama “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Some may call the genre swap a 180-turn, but Erskine doesn’t see the leap as gargantuan.
“Shows like ‘The Sopranos,’ to me, have some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen but are also really dark and dramatic,” she says. “To me, that’s life. I feel like you can’t have one without the other. There has to be a balance.”

Who are the most significant influences on your musical life and career as a composer? A great film or TV score is most potent as an artform when it reinforces the emotion on screen, but it also knows when music is not needed. What strategies do you employ to get this balance right? These were some of the topics discussed by four top TV composers when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders: Julia Newman (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”), Sherri Chung (“Based on a True Story”), David Fleming (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”) and Nami Melumad (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”). “The primary thing when I talked to Donald Glover at the start of this was, he said that the show is about trust,” reveals”Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming. For our recent webchat he adds, “trusting your professional partner, trusting your romantic partner; it really was trying to tell those two stories, of their relationship as spies and their blossoming romance as one story and the music had to serve both purposes.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

10. Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that actually move people to write “most iconic movie couples” lists; not that we’re speaking from experience, of course. The sheer tension and dynamic between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey gave an entire generation their idea of the perfect couple energy, and they looked stunning together.
9. Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
The touching and infinitely warm story told by Sleepless in Seattle captivated viewers around the world, but it was the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that really made it so great. The two stars famously have an amazing relationship and worked together on many movies, fueling fans’ hopes; albeit, they were just friends.

Soon after the release of the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it was reported that the second season would not have the same actors. A source claimed that Maya Erskine and Donald Glover will not be coming back, and the series will continue with new faces. Naturally, many fans were disappointed by the news and thought it was the end of yet another good series because of bureaucracy.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith [Credit: Amazon Prime Video]However, it would seem that there is still some hope from fans of a certain John and Jane Smith. Francesca Sloane, the showrunner, recently gave an interview about the speculation, and she seems to have nothing but positive things to say.

Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot was released earlier this year to surprisingly good reviews. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the show, created by Glover along with Francesca Sloane, followed two spies who are partnered up as a married couple while on a mission. The show was renewed for a second season recently.
While the show’s second-season renewal was met with fanfare, rumors began to float about Glover and Erskine being dropped from the show. However, showrunner Sloane debunked the rumor and mentioned that the cliffhanger from the season finale still stands and that the rumors were untrue.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess drama, now with “Shōgun.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we went from having no clear frontrunner in the Best Drama Series category to what seems like a runway favorite. Last week, FX finally announced “Shōgun” will compete as a drama series as two additional seasons are being planned for… sometime in the future. Good for Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada. Not only will they get paid for spearheading the year’s one real breakout show not named “Baby Reindeer,” but they’re also more likely than ever to win Emmys for their work. Or maybe they were always going to win. Regardless! It didn’t take me long to...

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

Since The Last Update
With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

Veteran producer Simon Kinberg, who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “Star Trek” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise, set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.
Kinberg started his career as a screenwriter, penning 2005’s “XXX: State of the Union” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” before joining the “X-Men” franchise as a co-screenwriter of 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He transitioned to producing every subsequent “X-Men” film, and he made his directorial debut with the final movie in the franchise, 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.” He...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.

Exclusive: Michaela Coel is no longer developing a series with links to her smash BBC/HBO hit I May Destroy You.
Three years ago, then-BBC drama director Piers Wenger revealed that Coel was working on a show that had links to the I May Destroy You universe. “It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along,” Wenger said at the time.
But speaking to Deadline last week, I May Destroy You EP Phil Clarke said Coel had toyed with various ideas for what was loosely termed “I May Destroy You 2,” before deciding against going further. Coel has previously ruled out a second series of I May Destroy You in the traditional sense.
“When Piers went public, we were all talking about it,” said Clarke. “Those were Michaela’s thoughts as well.

There are dream jobs, and then there are dream jobs. Acting seems like one of the more potentially fun dreams, especially when someone gets cast in a major franchise. Who among us hasn't imagined getting to be a part of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or whatever movie or television series makes our hearts beat faster? Talk about living the dream. Heck, sometimes those dreams can even be shared, with friends or family members getting to live vicariously through the actor. In the case of actor Maya Erskine, who recently starred as one half of the spy duo "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on Prime, one particularly intense "Star Wars" fan in her family even (jokingly) threatened to disown her if she didn't take a role on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

Se7en never fails to find itself as one of the greatest thrillers ever made. The David Fincher movie starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in the lead focuses on two cops trying to stop a serial killer, executing murders across the city according to the Biblical Seven Deadly Sins.
Brad Pitt as David Mills in 1995’s Se7en | New Line Cinema
From the plot to the performances and technical aspects, several aspects helped the film to be critically and commercially successful. However, one of the primary highlights of the film was its ending. Se7en‘s harrowing conclusion is still discussed heavily among pop culture enthusiasts.
Interestingly, Brad Pitt played a vital role in framing Se7en‘s ending. The Fight Club star ensured two non-negotiable conditions in his contract that did not let the makers change the ending midway.

What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a row of three shows dominating the three genres with “Shōgun” in drama, “The Bear” in comedy and “Baby Reindeer” in limited.

X-Men 97 Nominated at the Gotham TV Awards, Predicted to Win Emmys - Main Image
The dust has barely settled since the season finale of X-Men ‘97 dropped, yet the accolades have already started to pour in.
The highly-acclaimed animated series is nominated in the Breakthrough Drama Series category at the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, with credit to Beau DeMayo as creator and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and DeMayo as executive producers.
It is up against some serious competition in the category, versus Black Cake, Fallout, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Curse; however, it is worth noting that X-Men ‘97 is the only animated show to get a nomination in this year’s awards.
Nominees for the annual Gotham Awards are selected by a panel of film and television critics, journalists, and festival programmers, with the award ceremony to be held on June 4, 2024.

Get ready for more of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Prime Video has renewed the spy dramedy series for a second season. The series, inspired by the 2005 movie of the same name, premiered on the streaming service in February. Co-creator Francesca Sloane will return as showrunner for season two, but it's reported that the stars are not expected to be back.
