Breakwater Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Darren Mann, Dermot Mulroney, Alyssa Goss, Sonja Sohn
Director: James Rowe
Breakwater Review Is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: “Breakwater” delivers commendable performances, particularly Dermot Mulroney’s standout portrayal. The film successfully blends elements of thriller and romance. The script maintains a hopeful undertone amidst themes of lies, revenge, and seizing opportunities. Despite its predictability, the storyline unfolds with twists, and the actors effectively carry out their roles. The film’s exploration of loyalty, naivety, and life after prison adds depth to the overall experience, making it a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate character-driven stories in the modern noir genre.
What’s Bad: The film doesn’t introduce groundbreaking storytelling or intricate genre blends. Dovey’s initial naivety may appear unrealistic, and some dialogue lines could have captured more grit and intensity.
Loo Break: Since “Breakwater” has a runtime of only 1 hour and 37 minutes,...

James Rowe’s latest film, Breakwater, spotlights Dovey (Darren Mann), a young man who takes on the whole world to deliver on the promise he made to his cellmate. Dovey met Ray Childress (Dermot Mulroney) when he was sent to prison for an unknown crime. Childress had a daughter but never knew where she was based until he found newspaper clippings that told him his daughter, Marina, was in Outer Bank. Childress asked Dovey to go to Currituck and find his daughter. Dovey had no intention to disappoint Childress, as he was among the few people who treated him nicely when he was serving his jail sentence. Also, it was Childress who taught him how to survive and fend for himself in jail. So, it’s the least he could do, implied Childress.

Director James Rowe returns to filmmaking with Breakwater, the type of genre picture he says he has been longing to make. His previous credits include the undergraduate short film, Sax Man, which was acquired by the Public Broadcasting Service, and his 1999 feature début, Blue Ridge Fall.
Passionate about teaching, he has continued writing. Breakwater resumes his interest in the theme of ill-fated choices. The story centres on Dovey (Darren Mann), a young, impressionable ex-con, and his prison mentor Ray Childress (Dermot Mulroney). Feeling indebted to the man who helped him survive his incarceration, Dovey breaks his parole conditions and crosses state lines to find Ray’s estranged daughter. Little does he know the murky past father and daughter share, that spirals out of control, leaving a trail of collateral damage.

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

Sonja Sohn is set as a lead opposite Ramón Rodríguez in ABC’s drama pilot Will Trent, from 20th Television.
In Will Trent, written by Liz Heldens and Dan Thomsen based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling book series, Special Agent Will Trent (Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Sohn will play Amanda, the head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Will’s (Rodriguez) boss, she’s coldly competent and always camera ready for a press conference. Climbing the ranks at the Gbi has made Amanda a real ball-buster, but she has a mysterious soft spot for Will.
Erika Christensen, Jake McLaughlin and Iantha Richardson also star.
