“The Wonder Years” has been canceled at ABC after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
Based on the 1988 series of the same name, the reimagined show followed a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean. As he looks back on his childhood with the wisdom of his adult years, Dean’s hopeful and humorous recollections show how his family found their “wonder years” during the late 1960s.
Don Cheadle, narrated the series as adult Dean Williams. He was joined among the cast by Elisha “Ej” Williams as Dean Williams, Dulé Hill as Bill Williams, Saycon Sengbloh as Lillian Williams, Laura Kariuki as Kim Williams, Julian Lerner as Brad Hitman, Amari O’Neil as Cory Long and Milan Ray as Keisa Clemmons.

How I Met Your Father is returning for its second season on Hulu on January 24, and after some of the guest stars named already — including Himym‘s Cobie Smulders — we can’t help but wonder who else could pop up. Like, say, anyone from This Is Us since Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger also executive produced the NBC drama. “Oh my gosh, we would love to [have them on],” Aptaker tells TV Insider. “They’re all doing new shows right now.” Berger agrees, adding, “Yeah, I think down the line, if there was the right role, absolutely. Mandy actually did How I Met Your Mother before, so maybe there’s a way we can bring ...

The official series logline reads, “A single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. Exclusive: ABC is developing a character-based procedural drama from top TV and film writer Drew Goddard and ABC Signature where Goddard and his Goddard Textiles are based. I hear the project, based on TF1’s popular detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential), has been a standout and is looking good for a fall “second cycle” round of pilot pickups, which ABC is planning. According to sources, the network has an early, mid-October script delivery date deadline for a few projects that are in more advanced stages of development to contend for about 2-3 pilot orders. The Drew Goddard drama, which is considered a frontrunner for a spot, is targeted for the 2023-24 season.

ABC will not be moving forward with drama pilot Criminal Nature, from Rashad Raisani, 20th Television and A+E Studios.
Criminal Nature was one of two remaining “second cycle” ABC pilots that had not heard about their fates, along with fellow drama The Company You Keep, starring and executive produced by This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia. I hear the latter continues to look promising for a series pickup. Like drama pilot Will Trent, which was picked up to series this month. The Company You Keep also had started a writers room in anticipation of a series order. In another encouraging sign, The Company You Keep also has brought on seasoned writer-producer Phil Klemmer as co-showrunner, I hear.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
Starring Michaela McManus, Parker Young and Ian Duff and written by Raisani, Criminal Nature (fka Untitled National Parks Project) was a soapy procedural set in the stunning world of America’s great outdoors.

ABC has opted not to pick up the drama pilot “Criminal Nature” to series.

The drama series “Will Trent” has officially been ordered at ABC, Variety has learned.
The show was originally ordered to pilot at ABC in February as past of the broadcaster’s 2022 pilot season slate. The show will debut at midseason for ABC during the 2022-2023 broadcast season.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s “Will Trent” novel series, the show follows Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi). Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Along with Rodríguez, the show also stars Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, and Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner.

ABC has picked up drama pilot Will Trent (working title) to series for a midseason launch. Will Trent, starring Ramón Rodríguez, is one of four 2022 ABC drama pilots whose production was targeted for off-cycle and the first of the bunch to land a series order.
Will Trent emerged as an early front-runner in what ABC calls “second cycle” as part of its year-round development strategy. There was a small hiccup in the final stretch, which I hear was over the nature of storytelling, but the pilot remained on track for a pickup. In anticipation of a series order, writers have been working on scripts for the past three weeks. Decision on ABC’s other strong second cycle drama contender, The Company You Keep starring Milo Ventimiglia, has not been made yet. The network last month passed on the untitled therapist drama pilot written by Kay Oyegun.

ABC is adding to its midseason roster.
The Disney-backed broadcaster has handed out a series order to Will Trent, the Ramon Rodriguez-led drama based on Karin Slaughter’s book series.
The series, which was originally ordered with a cast-contingent pickup, revolves around special agent Will Trent (Rodriguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Rodriguez (Marvel’s Iron Fist and The Defenders as well as Fox’s Gang Related) leads a cast that also includes Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin and Sonja Sohn.

ABC has opted not to move forward with two of its remaining pilots.
The single-camera comedy “The Son-in-Law” and an untitled drama series from Kay Oyegun have both been scrapped at the broadcast network. Both were picked up as part of ABC’s initial pilot season slate and were in contention for midseason orders as part of ABC’s year-round development cycle. Both were also produced by 20th Television.
With the news, ABC has now only ordered one new comedy to series for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. That is the single-cam “Not Dead Yet” starring Gina Rodriguez, which was ordered to series in May.
On the drama side, ABC is still considering the espionage series “The Company You Keep” starring Milo Ventimiglia as well as “Will Trent,” based on the novel series by Karin Slaughter.

ABC is passing on pilots.
The Disney-owned network has passed on comedy The Son In Law, headlined by This Is Us’ Chris Sullivan, and the untitled therapist drama written by This Is Us writer Kay Oyegun.
It comes after Deadline told you that both projects were not looking good for pick ups as Will Trent and The Company You Keep, headlined by This Is Us star Milo Ventimiglia, were.
Written and executive produced by Ajay Sahgal and executive produced by Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, The Son in Law follows Jake (Sullivan), a salt-of-the-earth man who finds himself seeking the approval of his new fiancée Asha’s (Reema Sampat) sophisticated parents, played by Meera Simhan and Anupam Kher, including a difficult-to-impress father-in-law. Evangeline Young and Robert Bailey Jr. also starred in the pilot.

It’s no secret the TV landscape is changing. In fact, it’s all TV journalists can talk about — the amount of content and the endless way to consume it. But sometimes, it’s about going back to where it all started: broadcast TV.
“I think it’s about the accessibility. If you have rabbit ears on TV, you can watch broadcast,” says Milo Ventimiglia, who has had great success through his career, most recently leading six seasons of “This Is Us,” which wrapped its final season in May.
“The good thing about broadcast TV is it’s literally for everybody. Maybe you can’t dive deep into some real-life situations and subject matters that we all understand are happening because of standards and practices, but at the same time, you can still tell great stories and the quality can still be high,” the actor told Variety.
Ventimiglia knows it firsthand.

ABC announced that Sarah Wayne Callies, James Saito, Tim Chiou, Freda Foh Shen and Felisha Terrell have been cast in the drama pilot “The Company You Keep.”
Based on the Korean format “My Fellow Citizens,” the pilot follows con-man Charlie (Milo Ventimiglia) after a night of passion leads to love between him and undercover CIA officer Emma (Catherine Haena Kim). The two are unknowingly on a collision course professionally. While Charlie ramps up the “family business” so he can get out for good, Emma’s closing in on the vengeful criminal who holds Charlie’s family debts in-hand – forcing them to reckon with the lies they’ve told so they can save themselves and their families from disastrous consequences.
Callies plays Birdie, Charlie’s bossy big-sister and co-owner of the bar they run together, which also serves as a front to their illegitimate family business. A commitment-phobe with her own relationship baggage,...

L.A. Law not moving forward at ABC was one of the surprises of this pilot season.
ABC boss Craig Erwich told Deadline that “unfortunately the pilot just did not come together as we had hoped it would.”
ABC Upfront 2022: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
The reboot, which was headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, had a high bar to hit with big expectations. The original series’ Corbin Bernsen also reprised his role as Arnie Becker in the pilot alongside Hari Nef, Toks Olagundoye, Ian Duff, John Harlan Kim and Juliana Harkavey, and Kacey Rohl.
The pilot was written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and directed by Anthony Hemingway.
It followed the law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — as it reinvented itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

As we are waiting for the onslaught of new series orders the next couple of days, here is some last-minute gossip on what is hot at the broadcast networks in an abbreviated edition of Deadline’s Pilot Buzz.
At ABC, the The Rookie planted spinoff starring Niecy Nash and Alaska Daily News, starring Hilary Swank, remain a lock. The L.A. Law sequel has faded but is not dead. Speaking of dead, comedy pilot Not Dead Yet, starring Gina Rodriguez, continues to be hot. Josep has not gotten a pass yet but its chances remain slim. On the renewal front, The Wonder Years and Home Economics continue to look good to return.

We are 10 days away from the start of the traditional upfront week and a day into the new series pickup window, which kicked off yesterday with NBC’s order to the Quantum Leap pilot. Getting intel on broadcast pilots is harder than ever as that marketplace has contracted over the last five years but here is what I hear as we head into pre-upfront week. You can use for reference the Early Pilot Buzz report Deadline ran on Monday.
At ABC, the The Rookie planted spinoff starring Niecy Nash and the Alaska project drama pilot, starring Hilary Swank, remain very strong contenders, with the L.A. Law sequel, headlined by Blair Underwood, getting some traction, mostly due to the attractive marketing opportunities its iconic IP presents. Comedy pilot Not Dead Yet, starring Gina Rodrigues, also has been gaining some support at the network, I hear.
Still not a lot of clarity at CBS. Firefighter drama Cal Fire continues to look like a frontrunner. Beyond that, cop drama East New York also is said to be solid, with the Mother & Son legal drama believed to in the mix too. The Early Edition reboot has cooled off a bit, while True Lies continues to divide opinions but sources see a possible path to the air based on its popular IP and potentially advantageous dealmaking.
On the comedy side, presentation Hug Machine and pilot Rust Belt News continue to garner buzz.
2022 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
NBC yesterday became the first network to pick up a pilot to series, giving a series order to Quantum Leap, which had been considered a strong contender and was the only drama pilot in consideration for fall. As Deadline reported, the pilot is expected to undergo some reshoots and is eyed for the post-Voice slot. There had been chatter that NBC may expedite post-production on its other drama pilots that are in advanced stages Unbroken and Blank Slate, for fall consideration, but that does not appear to be the case. The other ordered NBC drama pilots are being produced off-cycle.
NBC’s two comedy pilots, Lopez vs. Lopez and Hungry, remain neck and neck, with Lopez vs. Lopez, a collaboration between George Lopez and his daughter, still believed to have a slight edge.

Fox
Two projects that had been put on a script-to-series track, John Eisendrath’s procedural drama Alert and Steve Yockey’s meteorologist comedy Cindy Snow, continue to build momentum and look likely to go to series, The network’s only pilot ordered during the 2022 pilot window this year, an Untitled Michelle Nader comedy presentation, also remains a strong contender for a series pickup.
The CW’s three pilots this season — all based on underlying IP — remain strong contenders as the cuts start to come in: Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, Walker origin story Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights. Because of their pedigree, solid execution and the fact that this is half the number of pilots the CW has normally picked up over the past decade, I hear there is a possibility for all of them to go to series.
As we reported earlier this week, Walker: Independence is described as a sprawling Western, The Winchesters as the strongest attempt at a Supernatural spinoff to date, and Gotham Kings as another solid DC pilot from Berlanti Prods., which also has plenty of easter eggs to attract Batman fans. (Gotham Kings‘ prospects also were improved significantly by the recent cancellations of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.)
So far, it does not look that Nexstar’s pending acquisition of a majority stake in the CW would close before the upfronts but even if that does not happen, the network remains disciplined in its choices with fewer scripted series expected to be on deck for next season than in recent years.

Decades ago, the pageantry of the broadcast upfront presentations culminated in the shows’ big attraction — each network unveiling their fall schedule to advertisers. The dissemination of information in the era of the Internet took away the shock and awe of the reveals as the schedules are now announced in advance, while the proliferation of broadband, which allows people to watch TV on their own time, took away the grids’ relevance as an increasing portion of viewing of broadcast shows comes from digital platforms.
Add to that the fact that broadcast networks have become a small portion of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers and that the development cycle has shifted post-pandemic, with only a portion of this year’s pilots in upfront consideration, and the unveiling of a fall schedule at the May 2022 presentations does not have the importance and urgency it once did.

During the “This Is Us” Season 2 finale, Kate (Chrissy Metz) dreamed of her parents, Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore), growing old together and renewing their vows. It was the only time thus far that fans saw Ventimiglia in old-age makeup, playing a 73-year-old Jack.
That’s not to say that it couldn’t happen again during the NBC drama’s final season — but Ventimiglia won’t confirm nor deny.

ABC is heading off into the national parks, only this time without Kevin Costner. The Disney-owned network has handed a pilot order to its untitled national parks project, which comes from A+E Studios.
Rashad Raisani, an exec producer on Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, is writing and exec producing a brand new take. The news comes after the network passed on the Costner co-penned and exec produced version in July 2021.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
The series is a “soapy” procedural set in the world of national parks. It revolves around the tangled, messy lives of the agents who work for the Isb — an elite law-enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land.
Raisani, who began his career on USA Network’s Burn Notice, where he rose from staff writer to co-exec producer, will exec produce with A+E Studios’ Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson.

Chris Sullivan is set to star in the ABC comedy pilot “The Son in Law,” Variety has confirmed.
Sullivan will star in the single-cam comedy as Jake, a divorced dad with a 21 year old daughter. Jake never thought he would love again, until Asha came along. The problem is that Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, is solidly middle class, while Asha hails from the equivalent of uber-wealthy South Asian royalty. Jake wants to marry Asha, and while he still needs to ask Asha’s father for his blessing, the real stumbling block is Asha’s loving but controlling mother, who doesn’t hide her feelings about Jake being all wrong for her daughter.
Sullivan currently stars on the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” which is airing its sixth and final season. His work on the show has netted him two Emmy nominations for best supporting actor in a drama series.

ABC has ordered the drama pilot “The Company You Keep” with Milo Ventimiglia attached to star, Variety has learned.
The pilot is based on the Korean format “My Fellow Citizens.” A night of passion leads to love between con-man Charlie (Ventimiglia) and undercover CIA officer Emma, who are unknowingly on a collision course professionally. While Charlie ramps up the “family business” so he can get out for good, Emma’s closing in on the vengeful criminal who holds Charlie’s family debts in-hand – forcing them to reckon with the lies they’ve told so they can save themselves and their families from disastrous consequences.
The pilot keeps Ventimiglia in the broadcast TV business. He currently stars in the hit NBC series “This Is Us,” but that show is due to end after its sixth season, which is airing now. He earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for best actor in a...

During the holiday break, which traditionally shuts down Hollywood for the final two weeks of the year, top broadcast network executives used to spend a significant portion of their time reading pilot scripts before kicking off pilot pickups at the start of January with early drama standouts. Broadcast business traditions, already threatened by the fast evolving marketplace with the rise of streamers, have been completely upended by the pandemic.
Three weeks into the new year, we’ve only had three January pilot pickups: NBC dramas Quantum Leap and Found and ABC comedy Josep.
Pitch buying season, whose start had been creeping further and further into the summer in the years prior to the pandemic, was late in 2021 — and lighter than usual with fewer projects taken out by writers and fewer pitches taken in by the networks for (virtual) meetings. As a result, many of the projects were delivering first drafts...

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

The panel was left stumped once again when platinum-selling opera singer Jackie Evancho was revealed to be the sultry Kitty on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer.” The former “America’s Got Talent” runner-up reunited with host Nick Cannon as she was sent home in fifth place, falling just short of next week’s semi-finals. Watch Kitty’s performance of “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse above.
“I wanted to show a different side of myself,” Evancho revealed in her unmasked interview when asked why she decided to participate. “I’ve been stuck in this stereotype of a 10-year old girl since I was 10 years old. Now I’m almost 20 and I’m glad that this experience has given me a chance to break out of that.”

The Kitty is just one of two women still in the running on season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” She and the rest of the contenders compete on “A Quarter Mask Crisis: The Quarter Finals,” which airs on May 6. The Kitty is sitting pretty after her performance last week of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” by Marilyn Monroe. That over-the-top number had the four judges singing her praises.
That was a welcome change for the Kitty from the previous week when she ended up fighting for survival in the smackdown against the Banana. She won with her soaring vocals on “Unstoppable” by Sia. That song was more suited to her voice than the one that put her at risk of elimination: “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper.
The Kitty is one of the strongest singers on the show. She shone in her first outing with her version of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande.

The Kitty proved she really does have nine lives on “The Masked Singer.” She made it into the final six competing on April 29 by winning her smackdown against the Banana last week. She was “Unstoppable” after singing that Sia hit and the Banana peeled back his mask to reveal rocker Bret Michaels. The Kitty ended up in trouble when the four judges and studio audience were not won over by her cover of the Cyndi Lauper classic “True Colors.”
That song was not suited to her powerhouse vocals. The Kitty shone earlier in the competition with her rendition of the Celine Dion power ballad “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” She was a stand-out in her first appearance with her version of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. She followed that up with covers of country hits “Mercy” by Brett Young and “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.

The Kitty is the lone woman competing on quarterfinal 2 of “The Masked Singer” on April 22. She is vying against the Banana, Frog and Rhino for one of the three remaining slots in the competition for the Golden Mask. She landed her spot in this round with her jaw-dropping vocals on Celine Dion power ballad “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” on the April 1 show.
It wasn’t a surprise that the Kitty chose this as one of her two encore performances on the special sing-along episode of “The Masked Singer on April 15. For the other, she went back to her debut on the show and her cover of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. She earned a standing ovation from the studio audience and four judges for that performance and went on to impress with her versions of “Mercy” by Brett Young, and “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.

The Kitty won’t be competing on “The Masked Singer” again until quarterfinal 2 on April 22. But the special sing-along episode on April 15 gives us a chance to revisit one of her stand-out performances from earlier in season 3. The Kitty made it this far based on her stunning cover of the Celine Dion power ballad “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” on the April 1 show.
The Kitty was purr-fection, earning a standing ovation from the studio audience and four judges. This was the latest of her powerhouse performances following versions of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande, “Mercy” by Brett Young, and “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.
We are sure that who is hiding inside the Kitty costume. Keep reading as we’ve got all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the real name of the Kitty.
