Making his feature-film debut as actor and writer, Daniel Beaty stars as a reformed gang leader trying to make a better life for himself in Chapter & Verse, arriving on Digital HD May 30 and on DVD and On Demand June 13 from Anchor Bay Entertainment. Fresh off the success of his Grand Jury Prize winner at Sundance — which also marked his directorial debut — I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore, Macon Blair has already revealed his follow-up and has confirmed casting for his next project. According to Deadline, the actor-turned-director is developing The Shitheads in association with Imperative Entertainment, a dark comedy centered around two unqualified idiots tasked with escorting a millionaire to rehab — who just so happens to be a teenager.
Blair has found his leads with Tracy Morgan and Luke Wilson, who last teamed for the Death at a Funeral remake. They’ve both been confirmed for the film, which has been described as “The Last Detail by way of Bret Easton Ellis,” which seems to be right up Blair’s alley. Based on his debut, along with all three of his roles in Jeremy Saulnier’s films, Blair has...

Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network, is bringing its members two brand new comedy specials from one of the funniest and most influential comedians of all time: the one and only Chris Rock. Marking the multiple Emmy Award-winning comedian’s return to stand-up after an eight-year absence, Rock will tape two all-new specials that will debut on Netflix around the world. The first show will tape in 2017, following a new world tour being planned now.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer said:
"Chris Rock is a beloved actor and director, and his remarkable stand-up makes him comic royalty. There is no one like him, and Netflix offers the global platform and creative freedom that will serve as a perfect home for someone with his incredible talent.”
Rock added:
“I'm very excited to be working with Ted and Lisa and all the good people at Netflix. I can't wait to get back on stage.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

The work of Neil Labute can be a nasty business. Particularly in his early writings for stage or screen, Labute's fiction placed an emphasis on humans with a flare for charismatic inhumanity, highlighting the worst aspects of society and its capacity for cruelty. A younger Labute could, in fact, be so tough on audiences that his first play was received with violent booing. But much has changed since plays/films like In The Company of Men or The Shape of Things scandalized their audiences. For one, Labute has accepted the Hollywood challenge of directing other writers' visions, like in Death at a Funeral or the remake of The Wicker Man (to varying degrees of reception). But as Labute told me over the phone, he's never been one...

Confession time. I’m not the biggest Kevin Hart fan. I don’t mind the actor/comedian in small doses – a supporting actor in films such as the remake of Death at a Funeral and the Scary Movie franchise, but I can’t sit through any of his stand-up shows in there entirety and the last movie hes was the “star” of, Ride Along, was – frankly – awful. However I am always willing to give Hart’s film a go – especially when they look, albeit from the trailer, as hilarious as The Wedding Ringer.

Everybody has their top ten trailer and poster round-ups, their year-end articles that rate Hollywood’s offerings in neat, succinct – completely biased – lists. But what happens to those throwaway moments that defy categorization?
Maybe Quicksilver’s “Time in a Bottle” sequence from X-Men: Days of Future Past should be getting more attention this year, but not too many people have a best musical moments list (but we do, and it’s good). MaybeGuardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Racoon doesn’t quite make the top ten characters of the year, but surely the foul-mouthed animal deserves some recognition!
And then there’s the ridiculous stuff; The “I just want to talk about why Peeta likes bread so much” kind of stuff.
Our Best of the Rest list aims to find those thrown away gems and shine light on their greatness (or lack thereof).
Let's get started.

Kevin Hart let his 10 million Instagram followers know where he stood today on becoming part of the Sony Pictures hacking attack headlines currently ripping through Hollywood. His post comes in response to the publication yesterday of leaked emails written by Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper about UTA agent Jeremy Zimmer, who asked for money beyond Hart’s $3 million paycheck when the studio asked if the actor-comedian would tap his vast social media following to promote a film.
In the missives, Culpepper writes in what is believed to be a reference to Hart, “I’m not saying he’s a whore, but he’s a whore.”
Hart’s response today:
As Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr reported yesterday, Hart and Culpepper spoke and laughed off the emails, writing that it’s not uncommon for them to talk to each other like that — or for Culpepper to talk to most people in Hollywood like that.

It’s been a few years since Chris Rock made a good film. The last movie he made was Grown Ups 2, but the last good movie that I saw him in and enjoyed was in 2010’s Death at a Funeral. He has a new film coming out called Top Five that he wrote, directed, and stars in. It looks like he made a great movie that his fans will enjoy, and I’m looking forward to checking it out. Today we have a red-band trailer for the film for you to enjoy.
Pulsing with the rhythm of his greatest stand-up, Chris Rock’s Top Five takes things to the next level, reveling in the high and the low, and blending a star-studded comedic romp with an irresistible romance. Funny and sad and wise and wonderful… with an absolutely heartbreaking, career-changing performance by Bill Hader. I’m “biast” (pro): really like Kristen Wiig
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Oh my god, I love this movie. I love not only the movie itself — it is funny and sad and wise and wonderful — but I love how it snuck up on me and made me fall in love with it out of nowhere. (It’s so rare for me to be this surprised by a film!) I knew nothing about it except that it stars Saturday Night Live alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader… and that’s it. If I assumed anything at all, maybe it was that I was in for some sort of wacky comedy — but I don’t recall even that minimal level of expectation.

Sporadically hilariously awful, but mostly cheap, amateurish and so distasteful it borders on the vile. Poor Nicolas Cage and his foundering career. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

At first I figured that it was only that Nicolas Cage had seen what Taken did for Liam Neeson — gave him a boost as a late-middle-aged badass action hero — and figured he’d get in on that. The premise here, after all, is this: Once-was mobster — that would be Cage’s Paul Maguire; it was the Irish mob — goes on the offensive after his teenaged daughter is kidnapped, apparently by some rival Russian mobsters he once pissed off. What could go wrong for a worn-out actor we’re all tired of seeing who is desperate to jump-start his career?

Director Tim Story’s Think Like A Man Too opens in theaters next Friday on June 20. The film is the follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy Think Like A Man, which Story also directed and earned over $96 million at the worldwide box office.
In the sequel, which was inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man, all the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas. But plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.
Screen Gems’ Think Like A Man Too reunites the original cast, including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Terrence J and Taraji P. Henson.
As part of a lively roundtable discussion, Wamg sat down with two of the film’s stars, Regina Hall and Terrence J to talk about the sequel.

Writer/director Neil Labute (Death at a Funeral) looks at lust and love independent film Some Velvet Morning.
Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games) stars in the drama as Fred, an attorney leaves his wife of 24 years then turns up on the doorstep of his former mistress, Velvet (Alice Eve, Men in Black 3), four years after they’ve broken up. While Fred is happy they can finally be together, Velvet isn’t so sure she wants that — or ever wanted that.
As Fred attempts to rekindle their romance, his persistence becomes obsession.
Rated R, the 2013 movie got mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers, with some loving it (like Arizona Republic critic Bill Goodykoontz who said it’s “well worth watching and arguing over”) and others hating it (including the New York Observer‘s Rex Reed, who described it as “a sad example...

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart star in the big Us comedy hit Ride Along. So: is it any good?
Three things you should know about Ride Along: it’s got someone who calls himself ‘Lil P-Nut’ listed amongst its cast; Ice Cube’s funniest moment involves his straight-faced reading of the line ‘Thanks Assface’; and Laurence Fishburne turns up at one point, doing a pretty good impersonation of Laurence Fishburne slumming it.
If you’re happy with all that, then Ride Along is for you. If you’re wavering, let me try a pitch to sum up the film’s deft play with narrative and genre convention. Here goes: ‘Kevin Hart and Ice Cube go on a ride along’. No? Come on …
To be fair, Ride Along doesn’t pretend to have any ambition beyond what its trailer has already shown us. Ice Cube is a serious cop.

Way back in September, NBC announced that it was developing "Harmony House," a half-hour romantic-comedy series about a psychiatric resident who falls in love with a mental patient. It's an offbeat premise, but it's not half as strange as the announcement of who would write and serve as executive producer: Neil Labute. Labute is no stranger to career curveballs -- he followed his bilious black comedies "In the Company of Men" and "Your Friends & Neighbors" with the odd satire "Nurse Betty," and a return to familiar territory of "The Shape of Things" with his wackadoo remake of "The Wicker Man" and a pair of work-for-hire jobs ("Lakeview Terrance," "Death at a Funeral"). He's an uneven filmmaker, not to mention divisive, with his caustic voice often curdling into airless misanthropy and misogyny whenever his portraits of male pathology lose their sense of autocriticism. But whatever can be said for his films and plays,...

Chicago – The path to this year’s remake of the 1986 film “About Last Night” starts right here in Chicago, based on the original 1974 stage version, “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” by David Mamet. Two co-stars in the remake – Michael Ealy and Regina Hall – visited the source city to talk about their version.
After working mostly on stage in the late 1990s, Michael Ealy broke out in a big way (see the story below) in the popular “Barbershop” (2002). This led to steady work with roles in “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003), “Never Die Alone” (2004) and the pivotal part as “Tea Cake” in the Oprah Winfrey produced 2005 TV movie of the classic novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neal Hurston. Recently, he was featured in “Think Like a Man” (2012) and “Last Vegas” (2013). Ealy takes on the role of Danny in “About Last Night,” played in the 1986 version by Rob Lowe.

The past few years have been strange for Neil Labute. Not personally speaking, unless TMZ covers Labute’s life and I missed something, but his filmography took a turn with 2006′s The Wicker Man. He went from directing The Shape of Things to Nicolas Cage in a bear suit screaming about bees. He followed that YouTube sensation with Lakeview Terrace and Death at a Funeral. He was trying his hand at new material, which in today’s world, is seen as strange. But Labute has returned to directing his own material, where the border between the stage and film is broken down. Some Velvet Morning is set in one location with two characters, Fred (Stanley Tucci) and Velvet (Alice Eve), working out their feelings with explosive results. For Labute, this film is a return to his roots. We got to talk to Labute about his writing process, what makes something cinematic and why he likely wouldn’t...

Women Are From Velvet: Labute’s Latest Chapter in Power Struggles of the Sexes
Its title recalling that late 60’s psychedelic pop song from Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelton, a duet between a man and a mysterious woman that instructs him in the ways of love, Neil Labute returns to what he does best with Some Velvet Morning, a one setting two-hander that feels an awful lot like a filmed stage play. It also happens to be the best output from the provocateur in over a decade, though that’s not to say it’s an overtly appealing film. Rather, it’s a bit tiresome to sit through, a bickering pair of selfish ex-lovers duke it out in a constant struggle to remain in control of a tense reunion in seemingly endless revolution. Until, as seems to be Labute’s custom, a surprising twist is revealed which begs for a...

Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha you gonna do? Make a third movie, we guess.
Sony is putting into motion a third "Bad Boys" movie, and the studio has got its collective eye on "Safe House" writer David Guggenheim for the script. But will the original Bad Boys return?
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starred in the 1995 original and its 2003 sequel, both of which made a boatload of dough. The first film also launched the career of a young buck named Michael Bay, who went on to direct "The Rock," "Armageddon," and "Pearl Harbor" in quick succession before returning for "Bad Boys II." The first movie came out when Will Smith was on the cusp of his action movie stardom; Lawrence was still starring on his own popular TV show, and hadn't yet donned "Big Momma"'s fat suit.

With his last few efforts including a directionless remake of Death at a Funeral, a laughable update on The Wicker Man and the compelling Samuel L. Jackson-led Lakeview Terrace, we were pleasantly surprised when Neil Labute decided to scale things down with his latest project, Some Velvet Morning. Featuring Alice Eve playing Stanley Tucci‘s mistress, the one-location drama [...]...

Happy 40th birthday, James Marsden!
The actor is best known for his role as Cyclops in the "X-Men" films but, sadly, it's a role that required a good portion of his face to be covered up. And he was billed fourth or fifth -- or possibly even lower. For some reason, the talented and easy-on-the-eyes actor has been stuck in the supporting actor category. Although he's acted steadily and in some great films, he's one of those actors who never seems to get featured on the poster (apart from "Straw Dogs") and maybe not even in the trailer.
So hey, James, in honor of your birthday (September 18), here's a little overdue recognition. We definitely remember him as Prince Charming in "Enchanted," Corny Collins in "Hairspray," and "naked white guy tripping out" in "Death at a Funeral," so those aren't on this list.

Editor’s Note: Our review of Some Girl(s) originally ran during this year’s SXSW, but we’re running it again as the film opens in limited theatrical release starting June 28, 2013. Any fan of playwright/screenwrtier/filmmaker Neil Labute‘s honest depictions of cringe-inducing narcissism will be pleased by Some Girl(s). Labute’s last few films – The Wickerman, Death at a Funeral, and Lakeview Terrace – have shown him going outside his comfort zone with varying results. Some Girl(s), which Labute scripted (but didn’t direct) from his play of the same name, marks the theatrical return of the Labute we love. His greatest works often resemble a car crash in motion with the driver smiling through every ding, bone crush, and bump while the victims are left with serious pain. The driver here is simply credited as “Man” and played by Adam Brody. The victims are a few of Man’s ex-girlfriends, all...

Since his award-winning debut feature “In the Company of Men” in 1997, Neil Labute has developed a diverse career that spans writing and directing for both the stage and screen. Depicting unsettling and often cruel relationships between men and women, his work can be difficult to stomach, but there is no denying his unique voice. Over the years, Labute has experimented with directing other people’s work, venturing into the horror (“The Wicker Man”), thriller (“Lakeview Terrace”) and comedy (“Nurse Betty,” “Death at a Funeral”) genres, to varying degrees of critical success. At the same time, he is a prolific playwright, with “The Mercy Seat,” “Fat Pig,” “reasons to be pretty,” and “The Shape of Things,” among others, making theatrical waves. Labute’s latest film, “Some Velvet Morning,” had its world premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. Starring (only) Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games,” “The Devil Wears Prada”) and Alice Eve (“She's Out Of Your League,...

When filmmakers find themselves in a rough place, they tend to dial back their productions, usually by necessity, but also as a refresher course in refueling the creative spirit. Playwright Neil Labute has had a rough go of it in his last few big-screen adventures: "Lakeview Terrace" was a half-baked contemporary thriller clearly made to fill the personal coffers, though one could argue it reflected an intriguing take on contemporary race relations in suburban communities. And remaking "Death At A Funeral" nearly shot-for-shot was always going to be a thankless task. The fact that these two films followed the misunderstood-but-still-questionable "Wicker Man" remake seems to point to a creative force in decline, at least onscreen -- Labute remains active in the world of shorts and stage, where his reputation has yet to be sullied. Now Labute returns with "Some Velvet Morning," and it's as stripped-down as a testy night off Broadway.

After a sojourn in studio filmmaking that included movies like Lakeview Terrace and the Stateside remake of Death at a Funeral (as well as, yes, The Wicker Man), director Neil Labute is going back to basics with his new film, Some Velvet Morning. Reminiscent of Labute's earlier, stripped-down films like In the Company of Men, Velvet stars Stanley Tucci as a man who shows up at the house of his mistress (Alice Eve) with the announcement that he's finally left his wife ... only it's four years after he and his mistress last saw each other. It's a little bit awkward, but as the two begin to reconnect, things grow more and more provocative, as hinted at by the movie's sorta-nsfw poster (a Vulture exclusive). Take a gander at the poster below; Velvet premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. Here you go:...

After some odd directorial decisions of late (the contested, eyebrow-raising remakes of "Death at a Funeral" and "The Wicker Man"), acclaimed playwright and filmmaker Neil Labute has mostly stuck to writing and making short films in the last few years. While we'll have to wait a little bit longer to see his next turn as a director with "This Velvet Morning," Labute adapted his play "Some Girl(s)" for the Daisy von Scherler Mayer-helmed film of the same name, which has it's world premiere at SXSW on March 9th. What is Casting Couch? It’s your handy one stop destination for news about what all of your favorite and least favorite actors are up to next. Today we’ve got news about Anne Hathaway’s latest excuse to sing and what Adam Sandler’s next excuse to get paid to go on vacation with a beautiful actress will be. When James Marsden first caught international attention, it was as the stone-faced and charisma-free Cyclops in Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie. People didn’t have much love for him back then. But since then he’s shown in things like Enchanted and Death at a Funeral that he’s not so bad when he’s letting his figurative hair down and getting a little goofy. That’s a good thing, because now we don’t have to meet Deadline’s report that he’s just become the latest name to join the Anchorman 2 cast with...

When you think of comedy, you don't immediately think of the name James Marsden. But the actor, perhaps best known for playing Cyclops in the "X-Men" movies, does have a background of laughter that has included most recently "Bachelorette," a stint on "30 Rock" and a role in "Death At A Funeral" among others. And eagle-eyed fans of "Zoolander" also know that he appeared ever so fleetingly as John Wilkes Booth. But now he's gearing up for what will easily be his biggest comedy role yet, and he'll face off against one of the funniest people out there. Deadline reports that Marsden has joined the growing cast of "Anchorman: The Legend Continues." While exact plot details are being kept secret, Marsden will reportedly play the rival anchor/nemsis to Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy, which is basically all kinds of awesome. Will it lead to another epic anchorman street fight? Only time will tell.

Those who follow stand-up comedy and the ever-revolving mantle of club and concert-hall performers know that Kevin Hart is a huge star. Like, .Eddie Murphy. big. But he hasn.t had Murphy.s luck when it comes to crossing over to mainstream movie success. Hart has appeared in a handful of good movies, from Death at a Funeral and The Five-Year Engagement to The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Murphy, ironically, even used Hart for a supporting role in Meet Dave. Hart is putting in his time. Even though he has a few high-profile fictional projects on the horizon, Hart.s going to see if his stand-up act will help him knock down a few more doors. Lionsgate revealed plans to release the stand-up comedy movie Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain on July 4, Variety reports. What is Casting Couch? It’s the casting column whose Wizards of Waverly Place fandom is finally coming in handy. That upcoming comedy where Elizabeth Banks tries to juggle being a person with loose morals with being a person with career goals, Walk of Shame, has just added another actor. According to Variety, James Marsden has joined the film. There’s no word on what sort of character he’s going to be playing, and seeing as the film is about a series of adventures that occur as Banks’ character tries to get from the scene of a one night stand to a job interview across town, that leaves a lot of possibilities open. Will Marsden be a romantic foil? Just someone who pops in briefly for a humorous interaction? We don’t know, but since we all saw Death at a Funeral, what we do know is that Marsden can do goofy comedy. Hopefully...

The “urban comedy” as it’s called by studios has fallen into a state of disrepair over the years as it’s come to mean little more than a film starring Ice Cube, Tyler Perry, or featuring lots of pot-smoking. It’s an unfortunately narrow view of the genre, but for the longest time it’s represented the blueprint for success. For that reason alone Director Tim Story's Think Like a Man comes like a breath of fresh air, even if its progression is very obvious and at times absurd. Luckily, it has enough comical punch in the writing and an excellent cast including Jerry Ferrara (HBO’s Entourage), Meagan Good (Californication), Kevin Hart (Laugh at My Pain), Taraji P. Henson (Person of Interest), Michael Ealy (Common Law), Regina Hall (Death at a Funeral), Gabrielle Union (Good Deeds), and Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin).

Professionally speaking, Luke Wilson has been in a bit of a rut. It.s not that he hasn.t worked. He has. It.s more like no one has bothered to go see his last few films, from Death at a Funeral or Middle Men to something called Tenure and another something called Blonde Ambition. Is that a spin-off from the Legally Blonde franchise that we.re just now hearing about? Maybe Million Dollar Man will get Wilson back on track . or at least, back up to the level his brother, Owen, appears to be operating on. Variety.s ShowBlitz says Million Dollar will be an indie sports comedy that casts Wilson as a down-and-out route driver for a soda company who gets one last shot to put his life back on the right path when he goes out for a kicking gig on a football team. If may seem entirely apparent that in order to succeed you need quality. A dash of talent and invention here, a wonderful peace of transitory execution there, that’s what maketh a movie young Padawan (alas Geroge Lucas doesn’t make this list even though he really should). But looking around us it soon becomes apparent that we often find ourselves swimming amongst a mediocre cesspool of light entertainment and most appropriately of all shite entertainment. And not only is it allowed to exist, but we (and by we I mean all) actively encourage it.

Kevin Hart is noticeably short for a guy. He has a standup comedy show called I’m a Grown Little Man for Pete’s sake. At that height it’s either be the jokester or become the joke. Well, Kev’s laughing all right — all the way to the bank. Hart has all but been omitted from lists of comedians on the verge of a huge breakthrough. That may all change with his stellar performance in last weekend’s box office hit, Think Like a Man, which offers him just the type of exposure he needs to reach a larger audience. As Cedric, a bitter divorcee who can’t stop talking about his wife or arguing with her, Hart is knee-slapping funny. And he’s following up that breakthrough role with a small but punch-line-heavy part in this weekend’s big release The Five-Year Engagement.

After ruling for four weeks, it's a foregone conclusion that The Hunger Games will finally give up its place atop the box office*the big question, though, is whether The Lucky One or Think Like a Man winds up replacing it. Nicholas Sparks romance The Lucky One, opening in 3,155 locations this weekend, has seemed like the safe bet for a while now. However, Think Like a Man appears to be receiving a surge of interest, and Sony/Screen Gems has managed to get the movie in to 2,015 theaters (up from an estimate of 1,800). Also opening this weekend is Disneynature's fourth documentary, Chimpanzee, though it's only reaching 1,563 theaters and could end up outside of the Top Five. The Lucky One is the seventh movie adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel, and for the most part the movies have been at least mildly successful. The most recent adaptations both arrived in the...
