*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Vision Films. It is hard to recommend a film that borrows so heavily from others. The Employer, from director Frank Merle, is an almost complete adaption of Stuart Hazeldine's United Kingdom shot Exam (2009). Both films deal with anonymous corporations and strange hiring practices. While it is not unusual to see a horror film borrow from another, The Employer is a film that this critic has seen many times before. And, The Employer does not bring anything new to the claustrophobic style of filmmaking, which has been seen in films such as The Steam Experiment, 247°F and many others. Instead, this film is very predictable, with Malcolm McDowell's performance as the boss, the only reason to watch. Exam and The Employer have very comparable stories. Both films deal with some very ambitious job seekers. Their ambition is turned...

247°F is a new thriller set for release on DVD and Blu-Ray October 23rd. This film seems reminiscent of another, The Steam Experiment. In both films, characters are locked in a room as the temperature rises and 247°F is the point at which the human body expires. 247°F has brought together a recognizable cast. Scout Taylor-Compton has starred in Rob Zombie's Halloween films while Travis Van Winkle was in the Friday the 13th (2009) remake. And, Michael Copon might be best known for his appearance in Night of the Demons (2009). All of these actors will play characters who are trapped in a sauna with no escape. Let the heat climb in just a few months. Release Date: October 23rd (Blu-Ray). Directors: Levan Bakhia and Beqa Jguburia. Writers: Levan Bakhia, Beqa Oniani, and Lloyd S. Wagner. Cast: Scout Taylor-Compton, Travis Van Winkle, Michael Copon, Christina Ulloa, and Tyler Mane. The trailer for...

It’s been a while since we chatted with Jake Kennedy, the man behind independent horror features Days of Darkness (2008) and Penance (2009), although regardless of the passage of time, it appears that Kennedy has not only tended dutifully to his historic Diy spirit but has also taken it to new and clever heights as witnessed by his unique approach to the financing and distribution of his latest planned feature, Reversal.
An action/thriller/horror hybrid which is slated to star Eve Mauro (Wicked Lake, The Steam Experiment), Reversal revolves around, “a young, innocent woman who awakens bound in a storage room with no memory of how she got there,” states Kennedy, “and upon her escape, she finds herself stalked by a masked stranger, and the narrative plays out in reverse.” Likening the project to a cross between The Strangers and Memento, Kennedy reveals as well that Danny Trejo (Machete) and...

The trend towards well scripted, high concept thrillers that take place in just one location is truly peaking, and in anticipation of the claustrophobic thrills of both Devil and Buried on DVD and Blu-ray right away we thought we would countdown our favourite thrillers that take place in just one room.
Grab a pen folks, 'cause you're gonna want to catch up with these claustrophobic thrillrides!
M. Night takes the producer chair in this horror flick about a literal elevator ride from hell, where a group of strangers realize they are trapped in an elevator with the devil!
After the abysmal ratings following the bloated Last Airbender, it was sure good to see M. Night back in the creative environment he's best suited- involved in a little indie with a big concept.
Back in the 50s and 60s the American government conducted a rash of freaky experiments on unsuspecting citizens.

Announced at the recent American Film Market, Cinepro Pictures has a pair of upcoming genre pictures coming out: One is Scar 23, a Sf-thriller “set in the cold war of tomorrow” directed by Philippe Martinez, who helmed the Val Kilmer-starring The Chaos Experiment (once titled The Steam Experiment). The other is the cabin-in-the-woods tale Silver Lake. There’s also Throbbing Justice (seriously), but we’ll pass on discussing that one...

Kind of a forgettable week for DVD shopping, with the exception of a couple of cool TV and Blu-ray releases. Big name titles hitting store shelves include Disney's Race to Witch Mountain starring The Rock, catfight thriller Obsessed starring Ali Larter and Beyonce Knowles, plus The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. There's also the indie Michael Chabon adaptation The Mysteries of Pittsburgh and low budget action/sci-fi flick Mutant Chronicles, plus the Lindsay Lohan direct-to-dvd comedy Labor Pains. Uhh... yeah. Save your money for the dry Kiwi comedy of Flight of the Conchords: Season 2 or the trippy outrageousness of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Have I mentioned how much I love Magnolia lately? Not only do they release some of our favorite films on DVD, but they go to extreme lengths to make those DVD's fanboy centric. Take The Mutant Chronicles for example. Not only did Magnolia pick up Simon Hunter's mostly misunderstood little scifi epic for distro (interview with Hunter), but they gave it a 2-disc Director's Cut and loaded it with documentaries and commentaries galore. That's what I'm talking about.
This week also marks the release of another overdue epic, the Russian fantasy film Wolfhound. This one's about two years coming so I'm very much looking forward to giving it a spin.
Of course how could we forget to mention Jaimie Blanks' remake of the classic Australian 70s cult film, Long Weekend (review). It's been retitled Nature's Grave in the states so keep an eye out for Jim Cavizel's face covered...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these. The Soloist The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it. Mutant Chronicles This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that. Race to Witch Mountain Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may...

If you've upgraded your system to include a Blu-ray player, then this is a pretty good week for you as August 4th will see the release of a few old friends including Blade II, Hannibal Rising, and Mimic. On the newer end of the spectrum, we have sci-fi/horror hybrids Alien Uprising and The Mutant Chronicles along with watch-it-at-your-own-risk fare like Cravings, The Chaos Experiment, Nature's Grave, and the anthology Slices.
If you have kids (or even if you don't), then Daffy Duck's Quackbusters is a must buy along with the Evil Christmas duo of Psycho Santa and Satan Claus. Once the kiddies are tucked safely in bed, then you'll want to pop in Hot Blood Sundae, which garnered a site record three different scores from Foy in his review, depending on how you choose to watch the flick. Rounding things out is 1982's Trapped, starring cult favorite Henry Silva.

VHS was my best friend for my teenage years. Seeing pictures of Scott’s latest “Never Forget” tattoo reminded me of all the Saturday nights I spent with various VHS tapes. For the majority of my middle and high school years, I would go to the Schnucks off of Butler Hill to peruse the horror isle. The great thing about this Schnucks was their video store was separate from the grocery store and they had a wide selection. Honestly, they had one of the biggest horror sections for the longest time. They also had a special where you could Rent One, Get One Free. The maximum amount of tapes you could rent out was 6 and I maxed it out every weekend night. My family would order Pizza Hut and I would grab a couple of slices and sneak back to my room to watch whatever I picked up earlier that night.
