I want to like it
huggamoogle12 December 2022
It's really cool to see a show like this based in Texas (where I live) and featuring an underrepresented culture. I really want to like it and I do enjoy certain people and their storylines. But ultimately, the show focuses so much on a rich kid who won't provide for his family because he's spoiled and his parents will do it for him and now he's a rapper? What a joke. His parents deserve so much respect for everything they've accomplished but solid parenting is not one of them. They just spoil their children and talk about "who's the favorite" and show conditional love. It's so dysfunctional. His wife is stuck in a crappy situation and I want to sympathize with her but then she just comes off of as a brat who talks about how hard things are for her and how she does all these good things so they need to praise her. They're so unlikeable. The show seems really disjointed jumping from one random story to another trying to make it interesting. They swear it's not scripted but that's so hard to believe.

if it is script, you should have a better writer and a better fashion consultant

Warning: Spoilers
This will be a constructive review as much as I am disappointed on the first 7 series I do want to see the next season on the HO. I was really excited to watch this reality series for a number of reason. 1) I am Vietnamese 2) so glad to see more Asian on the big screen 3) My girlfriend Rosalina Lydster is 1 of the producer. I wanted to support our Vietnamese and Asian community. I wanted to see the dynamic in a Vietnamese American household portrayed by real Vietnamese. I enjoyed watching House Wife on TV because they take me on different locations. Traveling. I would love to see the family do more travel. I also watch it for fashion. The HO's ladies do not have any fashion sense. I thought with my girlfriend Rosalina Lydster involved I would see a lot more style form LA/New York, I found out that she wasn't that involved in the fashion....this is too bad. You need to bring her back. This has to change. I would not wear anything that the ladies were wearing on the show. Their hair so out...Need to get my friend William Soriano who owns WSalon here in the Bay Area on this show and really educate and give them all a make over. 3 people that I would love to see more of are the mom, the youngest son Reagan and the aunt Tina. They show passion, no non-sense, very real. We all wouldn't mind the mom only speak Vietnamese and it get translated, this will be more real....since many Vietnamese mom understand the language but will not completely speak it. Sister Judy, who is a lawyer wanted so much to be independent yet she live in the house that her dad bought for her. She wanted her dad to respect her by letting her making her own choices, yet dad only ask for the New Boyfriend to meet with him prior to the Bday and she won't do it. That's to me is un-acceptable. Wash sound so un-intelligent, he is trying to come across as cool but he is so un-cool. Speak to his wife like a jerk. If he is going to pretend like someone else watch some movies and learn a character and be that...since you are acting anyways. I also like the dad....he is firm and definitely portray a Vietnamese Dad. I would not change him...he should be himself but tougher on the kids. I didn't like the fact that he gave in and show up at the birthday party where his daughter Judy announce the engagement...this was a shock. Too soon...the plot need to be thicken so that people can look forward to 2nd season....now we have nothing to look forward to. Wash, how can you go sober that quick? All Vietnamese man drink and are very productive....if you are going to quit, atleast show some struggle...for this is more real. Leslie need to quit her job. She is neglecting her kids and her husband. We can see that you are a pharmacist...great...you need to accept that you can't do it all. Either quit your job for now and concentrate on the family and go back to it later. Relax and enjoy the richness that your husband family provide. Give your husband a little respect and tenderness....marriage is a partnership. Help him. I can see why The dad can't retired, no one show any sense of responsibilities....Let Reagan run take over the business may be he can make it successful. Anyways...I do want to see 2nd season because I do enjoy seeing Asian on TV. So do your homework, bring my girlfriend Rosalina Lydster back for fashion advice.

FAKE, STAGED and definitely not CRAZY RICH!!!
caroltran-2777418 December 2020
As a lifelong Houstonian, I was mortified at the fiction they were projecting. Living in a $2 million dollar house in River Oaks does not make you the head of a dynasty or a "scion." Anyone can become a member at the tennis club they were at and its cheap to join. Renting a small private jet for an hour to go to Dallas for shopping is silly and tries too hard to look lavish. My guess is that the car driver is a rent-a-driver. Everything feels super scripted and is trying to portray a "reality" that is not there. The wife works as a pharmacist and FYI, nobody calls their pharmacist a doctor. She should keep her job though because it won't be long before her husband and the sister burn through the money the dad has managed to accumulate. I don't take issue with any of these things but don't try to promote these people as part of Houston's super rich or even the uber wealthy by Asian standards. I'm not saying that you can only show wealthy Asians but that's what was advertised so that's what I logged in to see. The viewers are being misled!

No matter your financial status, we all have issues.
phambus26 December 2020
Thank you HBO for finally representing an Asian family on television! Anyone who has married into an Asian family can relate to Lesley being the daughter in law trying to fit in with the new family or Judy the daughter going through a divorce. It's refreshing to see it from the perspective of Asian culture.

Too many of the reviews focus on the wealth of the family instead of the issues that we all face in life. The family is rich but who cares? Unfortunately, if they were poor or middle class, they would not have their own show because it's the society we live in, we want to watch the rich and famous for the things we dont have. Being Asian myself, my wife and I can totally relate to all the issues the cast goes through. You want your parents' blessings but we all need to live life based what's best for us and not how it makes your parents' social status. My wife and I are enjoying the show and we hope for more seasons ahead!

Terrible!
tysonjonesx14 December 2020
I was really rooting for this show, but it was just terrible! It's supposed to be a reality show, but you can tell they are acting and trying to be entertaining. There's nothing entertaining about this show, it just comes off as fake and bad acting, nothing genuine! Aunt Tina is just trying too hard to be funny and it comes off as cheesy. The son Washington acts like he's some type of playboy, but in actuality he just looks like a doofus. As for the females,, the sister Judy and the son's wife, so bland and boring, why are they even on the show? They should've picked a more predominant asian family that had more to offer rather than this bland family that is not entertaining and just trying to show up for the cameras. This doesn't even compare to crazy rich asians so don't even compare the movie to this ridiculous show, also they might be wealthy, but they aren't crazy rich asian status. Just watch the first episode and you will see what I'm talking about.

Authentic Reality TV Show
mekongnguyen28 January 2021
To be honest, on first episode I was judgement and thought they were showing off their money and I felt bad about my self. But I did find them authentic by the end of first episode so I binged watch all seven episode on one day. First of all, I never watch Crazy Rich Asian, and I never intended to watch because I know it is a movie and it is not a true reality TV. Crazy Rich is all actors, no where can be compared to The House of Ho.

Here are the reason I find this show is authentic and real..

1) Binh, the dad, is a conservative guy. He always have a poker face at the family gathering.. But he wanted the best for Judy. He wants to preserve her marriage because "what's God bide, man cannot untied". Binh put God first. Being Catholic myself, I can understand where he is coming from. He wants a perfect family where husband and, wife happily ever after. This is the conflict between him and Judy, his only daughter.

2) Hue, the mom, she is proud of her children. She has all the money but now she wants her children to live as God's children. She always bring one statue of Mary to her daughter in law Leslie so they could model their live after the Holy Family. I can tell, she only wants her children to think about God, and come to Him whenever there is a problem in their marriage. She bring one statue of Mary each time she come to Leslie, Washington's wife. Of course, she want to teach her daughter in law to love Mary so Mary could help Leslie to help her preserves Washington's well being and happiness. Washington is her favorite son and she doesn't want their marriage to fall apart also.

3) Judy is the only girl in the family.. I can feel her pain talking to the dad, asking him to accept her new bf. The dad wanted Judy to reconciled with her ex husband so their marriage can be preserved for God and the kids. Judy however, felt in love with Nate, whom she met 20 years ago, but they didn't date because back then Judy was very "stuck up" ... After fall and tumbled in marriage, it humbled Judy alot and she learned to appreciate a guy like Nate.. Judy was trying to convinced her Dad Binh to accept Nate, but Binh said no. Judy said, all her life, she always did what Binh asked of her, but this time let her make her own decision. I know this scene coincide with Judy real life. She did went to college and follow Binh advice to become a lawyer.. I can sense Judy all her life was playing the good girl to please her parents.. But this one moment in her 40 the years, begging Binh to let her make her own choice. This movie many people thinks it's script but it is not. It's their real life. It's all played out coincidencely. Even first episode, where Judy announced her divorce. It was not scripted.. It just happened during the shooting of the film. HBO only went there to documents about the rich family and how they live. But it happened that Judy became the centre of attention of the show when she filed a divorce..

Why I know this is authentic and not script? Judy husband probably love her but being with the Ho family is very stressful. Looking at the dad, the mom, and how the whole family dynamic makes everyone stressful. I don't want to be in those kind of family richness . .. This is Judy's real divorce. I'm surprised they are very natural on camera. They like natural actors...

4) Washington, the favorite son of the parents and the next in line to inherit their wealth.. His lifestyle driving nice car, and the way he interacts, viewers think he is showing off. But looking at a deeper level, Washington is a guy with a big heart to his parents and peolle around him. He care about people around him. To bs honest, its not easy to be born in that family and not easy to be Washington. Everyone has a high expectation around them. One reason why Wash may have gotten himself into alcohol. This is real story people.. They are not acting. This is how their life is .. But the film director cut out the dull and boring part and edit the interesting part to keep viewers.

Wash want to keep his parents happy but also his wife happy. Thats why we see he play cool on both side.

To those people who think this movie is scripted , they are wrong . These people put out their real problem, real feeling out there.

I want to review more but I think its enough to convinced you that this movie is reality show... Its way better and authentic then Crazy Rich Asian.

Sorry, love Asian shows but this one felt phony and contrived.
albertng-0831521 December 2020
I'm glad that there are more Asian families on TV but.... This is not like Fresh off the Boat or Kim's Convenience where we can all relate to the nuances of immigrant parents and connect over a laugh. It just felt very phony and contrived. The wife is boring? Let's throw in Aunt Tina who I found to be a bit off-putting, not endearing at all. Not enough of a story line? Let's create a family dinner where the daughter tells the parents about her divorce in real-time (yeah right) or let's schedule an intervention for the cameras. Need to glitz it up? Create a high stakes poker game on TV in a state where gambling is illegal. I just didn't connect at all with the characters. It felt like a mediocre reality TV show with some Asian people thrown in to make it more ethnically appealing. I am a reality TV fiend but unfortunately will not be recommending this to anyone.

Pretend money can't buy you class!
hanhngo-2147527 December 2020
The portrayal of this family makes me cringe a bit. The song, "Money can't buy you class", comes to mind. Don't get me wrong. I love reality TV and my Asian people but you need flash, trash and cash to keep things interesting. The FLASH is not there, you need to find more attractive people like a certain cousin. Come on, there are tons of hot Asians! And the TRASH factor is not there, except for a certain aunt, but you need it to be funny and exciting trashy, not weird and scary trashy. The CASH is lame. The houses are mediocre for wealthy Texans, the cars and jets are all rentals, total pretend money. If you are going to bill it as a show about transcendental wealth, where's the awe-inspiring wealth? I watched the first three episodes out of curiosity because the reviews were mixed but am not engaged enough to keep watching. I didn't connect with the characters because everything felt rehearsed and forced. And I just noticed that all the positive reviews either have the word KUWTK or relatable in them. I wonder who wrote them.....Can we please upgrade to another Asian family?

Better than I thought

My wife made me watch this show. I don't like reality TV shows. I have to admit though that I was entertained (for a reality TV show) and kept on watching...to my strange fascination that the storylines were interesting.

I'm disappointed in HBO - you could have done better
lillyko17 December 2020
I was so excited to see more Asians on TV but they are doing a disservice to the Asian community by trying to market this family as part of the higher echelons of Asian wealth and society when that is clearly not the case. Most Asians will see through this but other people will now think that this is the height of Asian achievement. They are holding Asians to a lower standard than other races. If HBO wants to ride the Crazy Rich Asians wave, they should respect that concept and not make a mockery of it with this family. If HBO just wants to make money, they should take Cousin Sammy and a bunch of other singles to make the Asian equivalent of Jersey Shore. It would at least be more entertaining and authentic.

Yeah, Another Crazy Rich Asians reality show
dcmackdon12 December 2020
There have been Rich Asian reality shows from the BBC, this takes place in US (Houston, TX). Honestly it's hilarious. You have the father the matriach of the family who has made his fortune. He has 3 kids, his daughter Judy and 2 sons, Washington and Reagan (who is not in the show, just one episode). Judy is basically at 40, has 3 kids and just divorced. She is just manipulative, really, she lives with her brother and his wife, while the father is renovating her new home. She constantly starts stuff and brings up conflict. She talks about being independent, but does nothing, then complains about her culture and traditions, says her father does not support her though she is living off him, she wants respect but doesn't give it, opening looking to disrespect her father, she starts dating and doesn't want him the meet the guy, which is all he wants, but she looks at 'his approval' as manipulation. Washington acts like and is a spoiled brat and dealing with alcoholism. His wife Lesley is working from home, taking care of her kids, and has to do errands for the family, really cause Judy could care less and is taking time for herself, really for nothing but self gratification. But really, Lesley doesn't have to do all that and take on the stress she does, she chooses to. The aunt, Aunty Tina, is exactly what she calls herself, a hot mess. They all waiting for the father to retire BUT the father, Binh, is absolutely right in not trusting his kids with the company, they are a mess and without him they would lose everything. I was frustrated at their patience, they could just cut them off, but they deal with it. These are people who live in their world, find drama when there is none (most of the time) if you like trashy reality shows, funny and subpar entertainment this is for you.

Tone deaf for our times
oonaho1 January 2021
This show has a lot of "fake" and obviously paid PR trying to convince us that this is worth watching. It's pretty tone deaf for HBO Max to release this show during the pandemic when thousands have lost their jobs and their lives. The show is also more than willing to play up to the model minority Asian stereotype and perpetuates the myth of the American Dream which has been used to historically disparage the claims of inequality by black and Latin activists. Sure, a Vietnamese family on TV is representation, but it's clear that they are seen through a white-superiority lens reminiscent of The Joy Luck Club. This show is not what we need right now (plus it's boring).

Finally a reality show for Asians!
illimattic11 December 2020
I enjoy this show being half Vietnamese. It is better than "Crazy Rich Asians." Sometimes you need that trashy reality show to fill up your day. But I actually find them likeable and I'll watch this over that crappy Kardashian show any day! There is some substance to this show and I enjoy it because its relatable to me. Can't wait for Season 2 with the Ho Ho Ho family! :)

How embarrassing. Their only hope is Reagan.
diamonddax18 January 2024
How embarrassing. Their only hope is Reagan.

Reagan should take over the family legacy. He may be the younger son, but he is much much more mature than his pompous, embarrassing, failure brother. Without his father's money, Washington Ho would be a total zero. He is a junkie with daddy's money. He was a Gambling addict. He was an alcoholic. He should be ashamed. His father came here with nothing and he is blowing that hard earned money 25K-50K a pop gambling with his buddies??? I wonder how much he has blown of his father's money vs how much he has actually earned. I don't mean meetings that his father set up.

His father needs to cut him completely off. Put all his money in Reagan's hands.

His wife should run and not look back.

He went to rehab and it did nothing to make him grown up. He's a man child. I feel awful for his wife.

The way he talks about his wife is disgusting. She deserves more.

Asian Culture and Net Worth
chrisngrod-6149611 January 2021
Just came to address a couple things. A lot of people didn't like it for the way things were playing out. The way family treated each other etc.

Being half Vietnamese, it is always nice for other people to see the way we grew up. To have an understanding of how things might not have been the same way for us vs for others.

Also, for the person talking about them just have a 2 million dollar home... Looks like they could afford a lot more if you Google their net worth... (~350M).

I have family members with homes more expensive than that in Houston but 350M is some hefty net worth my friends.

Better than KUWTK
jamtri12 December 2020
I don't want much reality TV show but this was worth watching! It was relatable, intriguing, funny, raw and real. The whole season left you glued to your couch until you finished it. I loved how this show took the time to talk about Vietnamese culture, and showed how old school parents think. I'm looking forward to HOUSE OF HO SEASON 2!!

Is it perfect? No. Did it Love it ? YES!
misscolleenly27 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I find it very relatable - except being upper class (lol). My back story is VERY similar to the Ho kids. My parents were immigrants/refugees of the VN war. The cultural battle, issues and expectations within the family are literally things I face everyday.

As a reminder there is really, no genuinely good reality TV show and everything is exaggerated so for its category, I think it did pretty well. I'm also glad Viet people are getting representation.

I don't really care that the Ho family is "uber rich" as some reviewers point out. They are still wealthier than me and probably 99% of the people writing these reviews. In hind-sight, thats probably better because they somewhat still have their heads on straight (except Washington lol).

Some people think Judy and Lesley are "boring" but I feel I connect with them so well as a Female Vietnamese-American. I've dealt with a lot of Bsht that they had to. Do I agree with every choice they made? No but I love how people can get a view of what its ACTUALLY like being a daughter to Asian parents and that the stories aren't just made up or jokes. I love Lesley because she is down to earth. She came from humble beginnings and was literally married into this life. She wants to work for her money and not just rely on the Ho family $$. But also wants to fulfill her role in the family. Respect.

Drama - Some may argue that there isn't enough drama but to traditional Vietnamese families some of these issues are BIG. Like the divorce - that is a big no-no in my family too. Men drinking excessively? Very true in Viet culture. So sorry Viet people aren't scandalous ...?

Love the show
Sanaria8123 December 2020
#1. The ppl complaining about the show clearly does not watch reality TV. Renting luxury houses, cars, jets etc., is expected. Creating drama and scenes for the show is all television and music. #2. If you are Asian and you don't feel this show represents Asian culture, get out of your feelings. I'm a black woman married to an Asian man and I can identify with this show on so many levels. #3. If you have a problem with this show when we have been given KUWTK for over 10 years, you are the problem with America. HBOmaXThank you for diversity.

Relatable show for Southeast Asians
lengyin21 December 2020
I watched and kept watching. I enjoyed the show and was surprised at the negative comments. This is an Asian family putting their business out there and that's not normal. The fact that these negative comments are breaking down what's considered "rich" or who is "well-known" in the community, just makes me laugh because they are just so negative. I'm happy that HBO found an Asian family, willing to put their business out there. I don't think it's fake. I am also second generation and can relate to the Ho-family. I think the show can be more relatable, if I had more of the back story of the parents and how they got to where they are at today.

A reality/docuseries where the love or drama isnt drummed up for scenes. It was refreshing to watch. The family dynamic gives a glimpse into the lives of those that live behind the gates, but also reinforces that money doesnt mean that they dont have problems just like anyone else. Im hoping for a season 2, however HBOMax has really dropped the ball advertising this well put together show

Family is everything
jpowell-9763510 September 2022
I love this show. It really hits hard on how important family is. We all have our differences but as family we work together to figure it out. I'm really proud of Wash for the changes he has made. Sammy for sticking up for herself against Leslie and the two of them working on it.

Overall my favorite reality show, not only because I'm a Houston native, but just how truthful it really is.

Judy and Nate are super awesome and I love how much they love each other. They are the best, and I love his laugh, it's contagious. The cousins are so awesome! I really enjoy how much everyone loves in this show. Keep up the great work and I am hopeful things continue to go in the positive direction!
